  • It's an embarrassing problem for many children, causing many of them to shy away from social interactions. Whiles there is no cure for stuttering, there area therapies that can help.
Finding the right words is one thing, but for many children getting them out is a problem. One in four young children will have a pattern of stuttering as their speech develops.
"You don't know which one is going to out grow it. So the theory used to be don't treat it they're going to outgrow it, but that's not the theory anymore. I've worked with children as young as three," says Mary Jo Haughey, a speech therapist with The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.
A lot of research has gone into stuttering. Most involve altering patterns that contribute to the problem, especially in young children.
"With them it's really modifying the environment, having the parents slow-down their speech pattern, not having a lot of competing noise like if you sit down at the dinner table turn the TV off. You don't work directly on the stuttering itself at that age level," says Haughey.
If the child is school aged, it's best to talk the issue over with their teachers, because they benefit from education, too.
"If you ask them a question, let them raise their hand, don't call on them immediately. Let them be the one to volunteer. If they're extremely self-conscious about their speech and they have to do an oral report let them do it individually," says Haughey.
Speech therapy may be used to help kids find their voice.
"Like lots of people when they sing, they won't stutter because they're changing the loudness of their voice. They're changing the pattern. And that's a lot of the things that you will work on in therapy,' says Haughey.
The child might be encouraged. Look for and avoid trouble spots.
"If they wanted to say 'by' and they'll get really stuck. It's called an easy contact, try it with 'byyy' don't press those lips hard together, make it a soft contact," says Haughey.
Famous stutters include Winston Churchill, James Earl Jones, Nicole Kidman and Tiger Woods, proving a speech disorder doesn't have to stop anyone from achieving their goals.

Hey guys, i'm 15, i started stuttering when i was 5, since then i've really minimized my stuttering to the point where i can basically control it. My tips for you guys:
    1. Put headphones on, pick a song you like, turn the volume up enough that you can't hear your own voice and start singing along. You should not care if people judge you for this. You would notice that even when you sing normally you don't stutter and when you talk to yourself, you don't stutter. Keep singing with and without headphones on.
    2. Watch "The King's Speech", very insightful on how someone controls this.
    3. Force yourself to go out (i had to, and i hated this, but it helped me so much) and i promise, you will get better.
    4. Breathe voluntarily every 5 seconds (or less, whenever you feel like breathing) when talking and focus on the middle of the words, like for example, take the word "bench", focus on the "e,n,c" part of it and i'm sure that will help too.
    5. Eat properly, i know that eating ketchup, drinking fizzy drinks makes it worse, so i don't eat/drink them, really try to control yourself in terms of these foods.
    6. Fit this into your head that "Stuttering is only a block in your brain that is curable" and I PROMISE, I PROMISE, don't lose hope and don't listen to the people that keep repeating you have stutters, this is something that you can overcome, just embrace it as something that you can improve, tell yourself that you are all right, keep practicing, talk more, and you will overcome this stupid block in your brain.
Stay safe, stay healthy, take care of your mental health, dream on!

singing with headphones or not. singing just works. kings speech is a great movie. you're right dont shy away from going out and interacting. be mindful of your breath. You do "have stutters" you have to accept it. accepting doesn't mean you like it, it just means it is what it is. the quicker you can accept it the quicker you can learn to live with it and deal with it.

Hey Elvedin, I have a stutter as well. I am a sophomore and what helps me is when I slow down. When I slow down, it helps me control my words, but that won't stop the stutter. When you are about to stutter on a word, breath out, exhale and say the rest of the word. Say you had to read for the class, you would get tense, but you must relax, talk calmly, when you feel the stutter, say the first part of the word that you stutter on for a millisecond and then breath out and say the rest while exhaling. It always works for me. Hope you find success!

Thank you for the value. I have helped many and I grantees my work that you could free yourself from stuttering. I work through media like WhatsApp or zoom. my research conclusion is it usually not always start at childhood when we have some trauma or neglect and abuse and mostly because we have no way of defending ourselves. I first work making a point when someone says I am stutter. I make sure that they should not identify themselves as being a stutter. They should say I stutter sometimes this alone its the very crucial step to the solutions. People stutter when usually in the spotlight and talking about a very important subject, the issue in certain situations, like job interviews that could be stressful. stress is another side of the coin for stutters consciously or unconsciously. If you have the skill and confidence and learn to relax(I teach you how). I guarantee you could with a little practice get rid of your stuttering. Another lesson is to slow down your speech or change your tone of voice. same sentence that you have to say(certain letter usually, could be learned) singe it you will see that you would not stutter this is a fact. or maybe exhaust when talking for the side of your mouth rather than the center. Changing your pattern, speed and intonation will show how you can get rid of this. There are many factors LIKE B NEGATIVE EMOTIONS OF FEAR(CONTROL), GUILT (CONSCIOUS OR UNCONSCIOUS)THAT COULD HOLD YOU Back. complementary consultation and your success will be my success. no worries about prices we will work it out. Whenever I talk slow or fast, the stutter isn't as prevalent, but I usually talk fast to avoid stuttering, BUT, when I talk fast my words aren't as clear.
I'm trying to train myself to talk slower, but I always get nervous when talking to new people because of my stutter ;(
Hopefully there is some kind of cure for stuttering soon!

Im 35 and still stutter since a kid. Ive grown to control it, but still do it whenever im in a tense situation or caught off guard where i didn't have a chance to practice in my head or prepare what i want to say. I can have everything I want to say down-packed, but as soon as the person says "huh?" Or "what did you say?" I completely stutter the second time smh i hate it so much its so embarrassing . I feel like its holding me back in life from being what i really want to be and doing what i want to do

I am 32 and I still stutter. Life in school was a nightmare for me. Introducing myself, oral presentations or being asked a question in class. My advice to the students is just to be work hard, be strong and live through this storm. Keep your grades as high as you can so that you can get a job where people will judge you for what you can do and not what you can't do.

I think the problem is just thinking about stuttering. JUST DON'T THINK ABOUT IT! Breathe deeply. When it doesn't want to go, stop. Try again. Slow down and eventually accelerate.
I've also got the same very problem, and these tips help me.
Whenever I actually succeed not to stutter for a long time since I start my speech, when I remember the word STUTTER, it just appears automatically.

About to be 30 and still stutter however not as much as before. As you get older you develop some tricks and get accustomed to situations when you expect it to happen. Advise: public speaking helps, even if you stutter while public speaking people often assume you’re nervous while doing it. However it gets better.

If your experience as a stutterer is anything like mine, you’ve spent a good part of your life listening to suggestions, such as “relax, think what you have to say, have confidence, take a deep breath,” or even to “talk with pebbles in your mouth.” And by now, you’ve found that these things don’t help; if anything, they make you worse.
There’s a good reason why these legendary remedies fail, because they all mean suppressing your stuttering, covering up, doing something artificial. And the more you cover up and try to avoid stuttering, the more you will stutter.
Your stuttering is like an iceberg. The part above the surface, what people see and hear, is really the smaller part. By far the larger part is the part underneath-the shame, the fear, the guilt, all those other feelings that come to us when we try to speak a simple sentence and can’t.
Like me, you’ve probably tried to keep as much of that iceberg under the surface as possible. You’ve tried to cover up, to keep up a pretense as a fluent speaker, despite long blocks and pauses too painful for either you or your listener to ignore. You get tired of this phony role. Even when your crutches work you don’t feel very good about them. And when your tricks fail you feel even worse. Even so, you probably don’t realize how much your coverup and avoidance keep you in the vicious circle of stuttering.

Also try and blend the sounds of previous words. So if you say the cat. Try and blend the e sound at the end of the to cat. Instead of stopping and starting. This really helps me

When I feel myself about to stutter I simple stop before I say the word and wait till the stutter passes or I’ll try to find a better word to use. This isn’t really a fix though cause stopping mid conversation with someone is definitely awkward. But it’s the only solution I have right now🤷🏽‍♂️

This is just superb, I've been looking for "stuttering fix" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Rincaas Stammify Blocker - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.

I’ll be 17 in a few weeks but I still stutter. I also have anxiety which I think worsens it. I’ve been stuttering since I was younger. I don’t talk much to people anymore so I guess that makes it worse... it’s really horrible sometimes and the fact that people who don’t have it can’t understand it makes it so hard.

When I speak by myself I’m fine! But when I speak to people or my family I stutter a bunch! A tip for me is to talk slowly or slur your words when you speak! And practice tongue twisters!

I'm 17 and still stuttering, but when I sing the words come out clearly. When a person has these problems, it lowers your self esteem and it's the most horrible thing ever. Though you like talking, the way you talk cannot draw attention to a large group of people. This is a major drawback :

Some great strategies to not stutter is to just talk to your self in which you will feel a lot calmer and talk to someone like your parent you may feel embarrassed but trust me it’s worth it and in friend groups if your not able to speak at that moment just wait until u feel it is right and ik how it feels you feel stressed out nervous and u get picked on that’s for sure I had to go through speech therapy in elementary and in middle school but now if you just practice you will become alot better and to this day I’ve gotten alot better from it and now it feels great to be out of it I hope these tips get you help
