Stuttering is a mental block that most people can't overcome. I've had a stutter all my life and it gets exacerbated when I know I'll have trouble with a letter and try to force it out. Most people say form the sentence before you speak it. A lot easier said than done. The thought of being ridiculed or being laughed at just raises anxiety. Simply eliminate that thought and calm your nerves. Slowly that mental block will start to crumble.

I had a terrible stammer since childhood and it really affected me growing up. There is a particular way people look at you or treat you nowing you stammer & that also brings down your self esteem. Fast forward j was acceptedin college & knew i wouldnt have my brother to help me speak on my behalf so i knew its all on me due to yhe frequent presentations we had to make in class. So i used to dissapear each evening and read aloud whatever i could find, a BIBLE, newspaper, note book.. every day and read it aloud and in a tone i was comfortable with till it became part of my every day speech. I ehow rewired my brain. But its a constant practice, you may fumble here & there, just forgive yourself and still get back at it. Iam workung now and giving presentations and holdong meetings, i fumble from time tk time due to anxiety but i practice breathing to get over it
The key to outgrowing stuttering is to gain confidence. I had a severe stutter ever since I was 12 and was constantly teased upon. I had low self esteem all the way up to highschool. This however started to change when I turned to the gym. Accomplishing goals in the gym created a better self image, this started to reduce the frequency of my stuttering until it was all but gone.
yup, not giving a damn, becoming an angrier person (sometimes), confidence like you said is the truth for most people with slight stuttering, people with worse stuttering may still find it difficult
I go to the gym frequently and still struggle with confidence. Sadly battling with an anxiety disorder makes it worse, it's exhausting. I am going to continue working hard on my self confidence though, thank you for the inspo!
I just wish people knew that it's NOT this easy as Steve Harvey says it is! I've used to stutter severely and now I stutter only a little. BUT IT'S NOT AS EASY AS HE SAYS IT IS!!! Otherwise people wouldn't be going to speech therapist for years and years on end. I had to really practice my technique and I have to keep practicing and even now my speech is not stutter-free.
@@paulizzee I speak a little bit slower and I focus on lengthening my vowels. I stutter on the beginning of a word. In fact sometimes I can't begin a word. So personally I don’t stutter very often if I’m being honest. Anything that involves the S syllable or sound is when I have a stammer block (not a stutter) which is quite anoying especially being in a call centre job. I always overcome the issue but I need a life long fix for this. And hopefully that will come one day after this practise.

In some cases yeah it’s because of nervousness and and but in other cases it’s not.

Hey I’m a stutterer myself since I’m 9 years old and I’m 21 now. I know how hard it is, especially when it’s new. There will be many situations where you feel uncomfortable and scared but don’t let that get you down. Do you see a speech therapist for the stutter? There are many breathing techniques that can help you. I also stutter when I read or sometimes even when I talk to myself. When I was younger I remember always being scared of talking to people. Even friends and family. Some „friends“ of mine became bullies because of it. But it will get easier. Don’t let others discourage you. Don’t let your stutter discourage you. It doesn’t change who you are.
This is not an accurate description of stutter . Neither can be stutter be possibly cured within "Tuesday to Saturday". It takes months, if not years. And anxiety is not the only reason . And i stuttered even when I had he text in front of me.

It's important for them to give them encouragement, hope & real advice.

Not sure why some people in the audience were laughing when Steve was explaining the concept of stutter blocks. Stuttering is a disability and people who stutter should be respected the same as any other disabled person, blind, no legs, whatever. Society has still long way to go but I am sure in 1000 years we will learn to understand and respect each other.
I have stuttered my whole life. I still stutter when I talk to myself or if I’m reading something. It’s neurological, not mental. Yes, for some people it might be a mental thing but for most others, like myself, it’s neurological. Yes, being anxious does make it worse but it is not the reason for stuttering
When you read you stutter, especially in front of class. However, you need to figure out what works for you. What helped me I use to tell people I stutter, the only way to beat stuttering is to expose him. Once I told people I stutter it would not occur. I used this technique for years. I had a job where I have speak in front of more than 200 people and I would start slowly and after gaining confidence start speaking normal speed. The next job was interviewing people I loved it I was no longer nervous after gaining confidence. My stutter will get worse if I am afraid that people will notice I stutter so I would tell them i stutter.

I still stutter, but no where near as bad as I did. I always felt like people thought I was less intelligent because I stuttered.
Iam workung now and giving presentations and holdong meetings, i fumble from time tk time due to anxiety but i practice breathing to get over it
Thank You So Much for This Sir Steve!
This isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. But for a psychogenic stutter, it's very helpful. However, there are other types of stutters as well.
Preach. This is literally me at this very moment in my journey. Much love.
@@povjoshuam found my twin
all but gone? that'd mean it's not gone
yup, not giving a damn, becoming an angrier person (sometimes), confidence like you said is the truth for most people with slight stuttering, people with worse stuttering may still find it difficult
I go to the gym frequently and still struggle with confidence. Sadly battling with an anxiety disorder makes it worse, it's exhausting. I am going to continue working hard on my self confidence though, thank you for the inspo!
I have been getting speech therapy sessions since 6 months, I have recovered 75%, slow prolonged technique & self positive mirror talk helped me alot
You're a legend Mr Harvey. Cheers
I had to really practice my technique and I have to keep practicing and even now my speech is not stutter-free.
what technique do u use?
@@paulizzee I speak a little bit slower and I focus on lengthening my vowels. I stutter on the beginning of a word. In fact sometimes I can't begin a word. So there is a technique to pronounce the first letter of a word softly. So you don't push on the first letter of the word, because then you stutter more.
@@haliho8827 i got the same stuttering problem sometimes i get stuck on one letter of the word literally not being able to get it out it really isnt as easy as he may say but ive heard having self confidence helps with that
You are 100% right.
100% I’ve had a stutter since I was 5 (now I’m 14) and I can’t start words, once I get going I’m fine, I always struggle on the start of the sentence
I just saw this!! Been stuttering my whole life! Started speech when I was in kindergarten, but I has got older it has improved, still not 100% fluent.
The reality is that most people who stutter make mistakes even when they read out loud.
"Stuttering lost a life in me". Just couldn't relate more. I'm 31 and i feel like i lost my life because of this stammering. So many regrets in life, so many missed opportunities. I always feel i should be more social but i couldn't. Never have many friends and now i feel that somehow it is ruining my career as well. Can't talk to strangers, never had a girlfriend because i was too afraid to talk to them. Always felt embarrassed and with low self esteem. And now when i look back, it kills me that i lost so much and there is no way to get those years back.

I am 13 years old and have been stuttering for about 2.5 years. Luckily the people around have never said anything since I'm so embarrassed someone will mention it. It is a real disadvantage as it makes small social encounters something I fear and avoid. I have to avoid certain words(because I know I will stutter it ) and so I beat around the bush leaving others frustrated. Unlike Steve Harvey, it is actually harder for me to read out in public for me. In English, everyone has to read making me dread it and my heart rate skyrocket. I literally breath as if I ran around when its nearly my turn. There is much more to say but I don't want to bore you. I pray God will heal us stutterers as I wouldn't wish it for my enemy.

I have stuttered my whole life. I still stutter when I talk to myself or if I’m reading something. It’s neurological, not mental. Yes, for some people it might be a mental thing but for most others, like myself, it’s neurological. Yes, being anxious does make it worse but it is not the reason for stuttering
What's the difference between mental and neurological
When you read you stutter, especially in front of class. However, you need to figure out what works for you. What helped me I use to tell people I stutter, the only way to beat stuttering is to expose him. Once I told people I stutter it would not occur. I used this technique for years. I had a job where I have speak in front of more than 200 people and I would start slowly and after gaining confidence start speaking normal speed. The next job was interviewing people I loved it I was no longer nervous after gaining confidence. My stutter will get worse if I am afraid that people will notice I stutter so I would tell them i stutter.
Can I get more info on this, bca its the opposite with me
Whoever I tell I have stutter to, I always stutter with that person, bcz its in my mind
He knws I stutter, so I stutter more since that got my focus
@@jaskaran3819 i stutter especially when i speak to people i don't know. However, my stuttering reduced to almost nothing if i tell them i stutter. My anxiety is the fear people notice i stutter but when i tell them my anxiety is reduced and therefor my stutter is reduced. My stutter derives from anxiety or fear of stuttering or speaking to fast. Also, when i feel depressed it is much worse. Speaking slowly, think what i want to say, and sometimes telling someone i stutter reduce my stutter. Mine does not go away, but it is not like in the past when i could not even get a word out. Now it is once in six months i notice i just stutter.
@@jaskaran3819 for example everyone had to read loud in class, the anxiety was increasing. When it was my turn to read loud in class i approached the teacher and told her I stutter. she told me to read at her desk, and i did not stutter. the next time she told me to read and i did in front of the class. And this was the time my stutter was very bad.
This is true I started stuttering at the age of 12 after losing self esteem
When I talk with my self I won't stutter but if I talk to any people at that time I was stutter
To be honest I stutter while reading and talking to myself as well. Its a blockage which I feel in my mental chats equally as in the real conversations.
In my case, it's hereditary. And it's annoying. I can't sing some songs, because i can't pronounce the consonant sounds together.. Even when im singing alone. I don't know how to stop that.

I always had this question for intelligent people. When you talk, how hard do you think about what you’re saying/about to say? Or do you just verbalize the first intelligible thought that comes to mind, to avoid an awkward pause in conversation?
I love this video! Fun fact: 80% of stutterers outgrow stuttering, only 20% keep their stuttering
At what age do people normally outgrow it? I’m nearly 24 and have made progress but still have a stutter and feel stuck 😢
Most often within 4 years of early onset. Stuttering recovery occurs less often after 4 years after onset. If you type in google: "recovery" "stuttering" "research" then you can find a lot of research studies that investiged what attributed to stuttering recovery, so I strongly recommend to read them@@sophiethelk9557
Then there are 20% real stutterers. The 80% were fake.

This is ridiculous. Nervousness or fear might aggravate stuttering but it does not cause it.
