This studio stuff really blows my mind. Like imagine being in the studio whilst this is happening??? Damn!
The transcendence doc is good for that. There's also a fun video from about 14 years ago of him recording vocals for the choruses for the song Supercrush and it's interesting seeing his recording process even if he's singing the same thing many times. It's called Pasty McBalderton singing 'Nibz' or something like that 😂
Worth it just for the random inhuman scream he lets out about 5 minutes in
he did a live stream for Toontrack a few years ago, creating an original song in 2 hours. Fascinating watch & the song made it to his next album ua-cam.com/video/2Bxzr9n_HK8/v-deo.html
I seen him live way back in 2013, he opened for Gojira in a tiny theater. Best show of my life.
If you want to see yet another different side of Devin check out Casualties of Cool - The Code. ua-cam.com/video/1QNx71lcJbQ/v-deo.html&pp=ygUXdGhlIGNvZGUgZGV2aW4gdG93bnNlbmQ%3D
It's Space Rock meets Country music and Devin.
If you're able to avoid being blocked, Dev's "Bring Him Home" from his CBC concert in incredible.
Again i love Devin Townsend probably the greatest metal vocalists of all time he has never restricted his creativity both vocally and musically he always seems to keep evolving and seems to thrive at everything he puts his mind an soul into very very talented and keeps surprising his fans
Devin has been doing this for over 35 years. He’s not damaging anything.
That’s pretty much the point I was making 👍
I love seeing artists in the studio! Especially vocalists, it's rare to get to see the process and I'm definitely here for it. Great video!
I think Devin Townsend does such a variety of vocal sounds, depending on the project he’s working on. From Vai to Strapping Young Lad he controls his voice. For me, when any musician, and I include vocalists, make it look effortless you have to appreciate the work and effort they have to go through to get to that stage without wrecking something on the way there. Here’s a thought for you, Steve Vai described Devin as a bit weird and out there. Steve Vai worked with Frank Zappa!
Devin, He is one of my favorites, he is the top for me but another singer is Christian Alvestam. They do stuff where I question the voice, I’m like wow. Sometimes these guys have lower Registers and go so so high, that’s why I find it amazing with these 2.
Heavy Devy lol. What a fun guy to watch do his thing.
Someone suggested Bastard. The Royal Albert Hall version seems to be a definitive choice for reaction. An amazing trilogy is; Funeral, Bastard, and The Death of Music
invoking the greatest scene from Airplane!! you continue to be my f'ing hero!
I am meat connected by old movie and tv references. My heart is Leslie Nielsen
Great stuff. You're really entertaining and thanks for a great vocal analysis for Devin
Glad you enjoyed! Thank la for watching 😊💜
@@SoulSingerDiscovers No worries. Scots always know how to bring some good banter. As a long term Devin fan it's always good to see new takes
Gonna drop my Devin recommendations here. I'm gonna go for lesser requested ones cause no doubt you'll be getting the usual ones mostly 🤭
Devin: Storm, Supercrush, Equinox, Planet Rain (ignore the overall production if you can, its rough as balls)
SYL: Shine, AAA, Underneath the Waves, Oh My Fucking God (i really, really want to see your face if you listen to this 😂)
And he does it all sitting
That was fun! Good singer! Funny, My Wife has not killed Me...yet. You are ravishing while rocking the red sweater today! Keep up the great work My Fine Scottish Lady! ❤❤❤
Thank you Scott! I appreciate your continued support and loveliness! Don’t change 😊💜
The greatest Heavy Devy song is Bastard from his Ocean Machine project (fact.) Wouldn't be one of his better known tracks but it's excellent
Oh I’m not sure I know that one. Adding it to the DT list right now 😊💜
@@SoulSingerDiscoversWhat I’d call *the* triptych representing his early years is those last three tracks on Ocean Machine: Funeral, Bastard, and The Death of Music. He has a live video with all three back to back at Royal Albert Hall that is as close to an out of body experience as I’ve ever had. It’s 30 minutes long, so maybe not the best for a reaction video, but I can’t recommend it enough. The thing that boggles my mind is that he also did Deadhead on the same gig! That endurance and precision is the stuff of legend.
The Death of Music ❤❤❤❤❤ what a song and what an album
@@SoulSingerDiscovers as was suggested below go with the RAH (2015) version.. it's spectacular!
I'd like to watch more of him. I saw him in 2019, just before the pandemic hit. Was amazing!
About the neighbourhood thing: "when I listen to i.e. Ginger Baker, my neighbours listen to it, too!"
True story: the house on my right is about 50 meters away. A young couple lived upstairs. We never had any contact. About a year after they moved in, the postman left a parcel for them at our house: they weren't home. In the evening I went over. Introducing myself: "I'm the neighbour from next door. I have this parcel for you." The answer was: "Oh, the percussionist!"
Sorry: my favourite album at that time was Middle Passage by Ginger Baker 😂
My Stereo has 4 stacked speakers per channel, to reduce the amplitude of the bass speakers for a more crisp sound. (Although that is blurring a bit the definition of an intrument in the room. I once had the chance to learn at the new company of Iyvind Skaaning. Pls google his name 🙂
having listened to Devin since way back in the mid-90s (Steve Vai _Sex & Religion_ ) , his voice hasn't dropped a bit ... seems he's doing something right with himself (despite his sound sounding like he'd be shredding his chords)
This track is called Fallout and is on Sky Blue.. fabulous song with a great female vocal line from Anneke.. The "lockdown" band you mention was actually only 4 people - Dev, Steve Platt on guitar, James Leach on Bass and Darby Todd on Drums.. all had to be sourced from UK owing to the rules in place at the time and in those early days the entire crew had to remain isolated..
Steve has his own channel actually with some fabulous stuff on it, including a couple of wonderful SYL covers ua-cam.com/video/3twdCazUGLQ/v-deo.html
Thanks so much for this Andy! And thanks for watching :)
Devin is going to be resuming work on another project called Casualties of Cool pretty soon. That band is kind of a blissed out psychedelic space country affair featuring Ché Aimee Dorval and it's fantastic. ua-cam.com/video/FTW0Uf-34BA/v-deo.html
Amazing! Thanks for this my dude! :)
@@SoulSingerDiscovers You're welcome! I'd really like more people to discover Ché and this project with Devin is such a great avenue.
Geeky, I swear you are the coolest! I adore your candor.
It's always impressive to see how difficult studio work is.
Please continue with the documentary.
With Heavy Devy, this is pretty fantastic!
Edit: Pumpkinhead and Army of Darkness rule. 🤘
Thank you Laura!! That’s so sweet 🥹 he is a beast for sure and I honestly have to try my hardest not to just do DT videos all the time 😂 thanks you so much for watching and taking the time 😊💜
I think Devvy is great cos he kinda plays up the effort he's putting in. Like almost looking like it hurts. It's clearly not else he wouldn't still be doing this after all these years.
I'm a large woman at 6'1 & I have big lungs & my voice is quite deep. I think I likely damaged my voice in my young years just having conversations over the music at nightclubs so I'm a bit husky but there's nothing terrible going on there.
what I heart is that He got out of air and his brain freezed, that why he said ouch
He’s a beautiful man 😊
I suspect the “ouch” was from his jaw.
Yeah I think you might be right!
had no idea that was a French term. Learning so much today
You’re welcome mon ami 😂
I think you should check out some of his work with Steve Vai when he first came into the industry. The album Sex and Religion is great from start to finish, but a few notable songs to check out would be Here and Now, Still My Bleeding Heart, and Down Deep Into The Pain.... He was barely an adult at this time, so I think it could make for a nice compare and contrast to his music that he is doing now.
Can't wait to see what song it is.😊
It's 'Fallout', from 'Sky Blue'.
@@Roddrummer 'Sky Blue' is his most under-rated album. It was overshadowed by 'Z2' but it's an absolute banger.
And, frankly, I've never been the biggest fan of the Ziltoid stuff anyway.
@@RolandDeschain1 Agreed and agreed. 'Sky Blue' is superb, and I love both Ziltoid records, but I wouldn't count them amongst his absolute best.
You are a very VERY silly woman (with a Scottish accent) . . .
YEWWW would LOOOV Devin as "The Casualties of Cool", another side project with guitarist/vocalist "Ché Aimee Dorval".
It's a cross between; Folk, Americana, and Country/Alternative Rock (yeah, pretty odd eh?).
Checkout the Live "Dunlop Sessions" . . . its pretty astounding (and as you would say; "Loovly").
I'd also suggest tracks from the Devin Townsend Project album "Addicted" with vocals by "Anneke van Giersbergen" (say that 5 times real fast!), she has a gorgeous voice and a great contrast with Hevy Devy's vocals. Also from the album "Transcendence", the track "Failure" is freakin' GORGEOUS (live or studio).
- Sidenote: I haven't met anyone who would want to marry me, they all want to kill me before that happens. Have a wunderful dey!
I wish I liked Devin Townsend, he sounds like a very capable vocalist. I wish I liked Strapping Young Lad, at a glance their sound was very much like the kind of metal I'd really enjoy. I've never not enjoyed any of their music when someone put it on at a bar or a party. But for some reason, when I put it on to listen to, I just get bored after a little while. I don't think I've ever listened to a complete a song of theirs... and I have just listened to a complete Throbbing Gristle album from front to back (to be fair, that was a proper challenge).
That’s totally fair. I think this is something we have to be okay with in music. It’s so personal to the individual that sometimes it’s just not gonna be for you. I can appreciate the talent in Nightwish but honestly, you couldn’t pay me to listen to them all the time. I find it really dull. But that doesn’t mean they’re anything other than not for me. I think with Devin he has so many projects that perhaps it’s a little muddled for some but yeah fair point 😊
That's fair. Out of curiosity what songs of SYL have you listened to? I could see if I could make any recommendations based on what type of metal you usually listen to :)
@@sVieira151 I was trying to pinpoint what was the aspect about it that doesn't excite me, but it's really hard to pinpoint. I think for a good part it's the production, but also there's often something about the way the rhythm is implemented? I'm not saying it's technically not good, it just feels somehow basic to me. The drums, but also the cadence of the chugs. I feel like am missing the vocabulary to express it properly. I tend to enjoy a lot of music where there's always something going on with the drums and rhythms, even if it really doesn't always have to be odd or changing time signatures. But specifically for metal it seems to be almost a requirement in my tastes.
As for what I listened to: City was definitely an album that was played at my student club plenty of times, other than that, I've just checked out the bigger songs. Same for some of the various Townsend projects. Couldn't tell you what songs exactly.
edit: I think just found a SYL song that is going onto a playlist: AAA
@@Razzmata77 I hear you. I do agree that in terms of the rhythmic foundations his songs are (usually) fairly straightforward, especially when he's doing his more 'pop metal' style.
AAA is a favourite of mine when it comes to SYL actually. It's really groovy.
Others I'd recommend you checkout:
SYL: Skeksis, Possessions, Antiproduct, Far Beyond Metal, Skin Me
Solo stuff: By Your Command, Earth Day (a personal favourite of mine), Triumph, Planet of the Apes, Sumeria, Failure, Gaia.
It occurred to me while having a listen that his more complex rhythm stuff is usually on his weirder stuff 😂
He got my singing talent. I completely blame him because he has more talent than one person should. He got mine. 😂✌🏻🤘🏻
If you do choose to look into the documentaries by Devin, beware of juvenile fart jokes. He's that kind of person 🤣
He may be the greatest musician on the planet an a genuine creative genius, but he's still a dude and dudes love farts.
I would so love to watch a movie with you. I am so subscribing to your movie channel.
Thank you my dude 💜😊
Anyone else want to see Devin on Saturday Night Live as Opera Man?
Not sure if Devin still has this problem or if it's from earlier in his career but he has said that he mistreated his voice to a point where he had blood coming out of his mouth (think it was referring to tours)...... anyway not sure his vocal technique is that great even if the result sounds amazing.
You know... for you, I'll make an exception, we can both be Mel
Thats the kind of temporarily level headedness I have come to respect for a Mel who is almost certainly going to murder me if I besmirch the good name. Outstanding! 😆💜
@@SoulSingerDiscovers I don't know what "Melissa" means, but "Melanie" means The Dark One, but like in a beautiful way - and my ginger ass brings the fire to back it up 🤣🤣🤣
@@magusmelanie828 Thats fabulous! Mine means honeybee in Hebrew which I guess fits. Im chubby, fluffy, and cute, but Im a stingy bastard when i want to be 😂
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Honeybee and the Dark One is absolutely lore I want to read
If it were a black leather bound book with gold trim I would give the book shop aaaaalllllllll my money 😊🐝😈
Can you react to the music video creeping in my soul by cryoshell?
Would love to see you react to Jeff Buckley - Grace (Live on NPA 1995). Jeff and Devin are two vocalists that are so different, but were unknowingly doing the same thing pre-internet (I'm talking 1990s because Jeff tragically died in '97) at the same time - just in different genres. I love how they both blend their distorted + melodic choices in such a poignant way.... they ALWAYS put the music first, so it wasn't some bland technical showcase. It was purposeful & had emotional meaning.
I know chances of this comment being seen is very low and that's perfectly fine. People expect too much these days. All one can do is try. But if you are bored and never heard Jeff Buckey's live singing and are in the mood for someone underappreciated & special like Devin (in my opinion), here you are
I have indeed heard Jeff Buckley many a time and whilst I think he is held in quite high regard, I think he is a wholly underrated vocalist. Thank you for sharing all the same and thanks for watching my dude! 😊
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Yesssss! That was really well said. Glad I chanced upon your channel!
What's wacky is that he's sitting down as he sings. Most singers need to fully stretch their torso to get their full air and power.
Preach, I tried it sitting down and it nearly finished me off :P Thanks for watching my dude! :)
I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned it to you before, but in addition to having a little distortion in your voice you also have a slight accent. 😅
Really!? Nah! I think that’s just the microphone 😆😉
You should do his quarantine version of Why?
Absolutely!
It's so funny and cute, especially when you know it was to raise money for a children's hospital.
Devin is a gift.
That was near the top of my list. He’s such a talent 😊 thanks for watching my dude 💜
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Word.
Lies!!! That's not natural distortion in your voice; it's the crazy Highlander coming out to kill us all!!! (Please, don't kill me!)
As for distorted/clean vocals - if only for yourself - check out Huntress. Jill's vocals will scare that Highlander back inside his mother!!!
A great reaction. Best! J
Top tier banter as usual 😊 thank you 😂 I’ll check Jill out if for no other reason than I want to see this woman with that rep. I hope you’re keeping salacious and relaxed 😊💜
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Once, again, my bonny lass, you do me the honour.
As for the salacious, it's been some time since I've rimmed; I, only, await the next, cheeky opportunity!
I wish you fluids and groans!
(Note: If York University would've known to what extent I'd so abuse their English degree, they would've paid me to leave!)🤣
@@SoulSingerDiscovers I hope my additional commentary wasn't too much.
Hey, it's been a while. Are you ok?
Hello lovely, yeah I’m totally fine! I’ve been updating my little room for recording so videos have fallen behind and then I fell behind on my comments so I’ve been a little goblin in my studio learning how to use new stuff. But all good. I’m not gonna lie I was genuinely so touched that you put this wee comment. I’m sure you’re not frothing at the mouth worried but still. Are you shiny?? ✨😊💜
@@SoulSingerDiscovers I'm far too blunt to be 'shiny!' (That said, some parts are better polished than others!)😁
I was pretty sure you weren't bug food; but I was concerned you might be sick/depressed. Good to know neither are true.
As for your endeavors, I wish you the best with them. Even Scottish Muses require a room of their own!
Best!
