  • this is a video of a fish packer taking on water and sinking during the 2014 roe herring fishery. The packer just makes it in to French Creek B.C. and is able to be pumped out and saved. Every one was fine and the boat didn't pack anymore fish but finished the season.

After using a 5 gallon pail ..my deckhand had four other bilge pumps that I was too lazy to throw away ..all worked that day..my gillnetter came close to rolling over.. We got her pumped out and made it home under our own power ...yeah , those guys were lucky the bull works never gave way.

@Pee Tee No idea but a guess, the owners put the maintenance in to keep her going, until the wood in the hull decided it was time for replacement and they just didn't have the cash to effectively build a new boat out of her. They could get a loan to build a brand new boat from scratch but not to rebuild the old one.

Not so sure about that... Looks like a large portion of the hold is flooded and the rails are awash almost to the wheelhouse!!! Had to be close to flooding the engine compartment... Good work by the skipper, but need to know circumstances to determine cause. Was it at crossing the bar? Was it at at the fishing grounds while putting on a seine of fish?? Not enough data to know, but any way the captain communicated the vessel's issues, kept the crew safe, and delivered his catch (hopefully).

@jim Bosweeney is this the port of Ilwaco, Washington? You mentioned the bar, and I thought I recognized this port. It looks just like it. I grew up fishing out of that port. I haven't seen it in over 20yrs though

Great work...bòat can be better assessed when the tide goes out under the vessel, though may damage some structures. Wonder if he had catch on board? And wonder further if there were emergency high capacity pumps operating or on board.

The captain knew if he stopped she'd sink. Great thinking using the boat ramp.

I know people who have work boats that they know they leak. And they keep one or two gas "mud pumps' on bored. So if it get this bad, they can pump allot of water out fast. Same type of pumps the Coast Guard uses to assist when they respond to to a boat taking on water. And they really are not very expressive and take up very little space.

This is what driving home with a watery turd hanging out feels like.
Glad she made it home safe.
