Weird how the Yamaha sounds exactly how I would imagine the sound of the Gibson and Martin mixed together. Like the bell like quality of the Gibson and the warmer quality of the Martin all rolled into one
The thing I love most about Yamaha is the thing I absolutely detest in the other two builders and that’s consistency across all models. Yamaha’s are a working man’s dream! Don’t matter how much you have to spend, Yamaha’s just work! And they work every damn time from their priciest to their budget models! With the other 2 builders you have to spend a lot of time looking and even then, there are no guarantees that you got yourself a keeper! Been burned twice now. Once with an Martin HD28 and once with a 25th Anniversary 400 series Taylor. Three times if I include the Sigma I once purchased. What a piece of junk! I ultimately went back to Yamaha. Their quality control is unmatched! Every single guitar player in my family has owned a Yamaha or two at some point because they rarely if ever let you down. Period
I would take the J-45, if I could have just one, because of the rounder 12" fretboard radius, the shorter scale length, and the distinctive sound. The other 2 guitars are excellent of course. I'd love to have all 3.
But if we were to check the balance of each, the expensive ones seem to get a better balance in the highs. That might become more apparent as the tops age.
Yamaha only specifies neck wood as african mahogany, but who knows. Sapele is usualy called african mahogany, back and sides can be from real mahogany sourced from Cuba or Mexico. It for sure looks diferrent than neck, a lot tighter grain and very stripey. Guitars are made in Yamaha custom shop in Hamamatsu afterall.
Ad missing response in highs, could it be coused by ebony bridge pins? I changed both pins and bridge saddle for Tusq and it helped a lot. Im really happy now with my FGX5.
FG5 for the win, more to the point that J45 is a gutless dog.....no way would I pay for that, if I really wanted a J45 I'd try quite a few more and hopefully one would call to me.
The Gibson and Martin has a sound selfhood, but the Yamaha hasn't. I heard three times the demo on audiofil headphon , and I finded a tiny differences of them. Can know, these Gibson and ÍMartin modells are entry level of they collection, and the FG5 is the top of the Yamaha. Yamaha stronger in electric acoustic models. I have a Martin D28, and the Gibson J45 TV, and I buy a Yamaha A5R the next future.. ( FG9 will be the higher level the future) Thank you the demo!
All 3 guitars sound great. The timbre of J45 is pleasant and distinctive, and the unique sound quality is not available in the other two guitars. As a high imitation of Martin, Yamaha has similar timbre and sound quality to Martin, but Yamaha does not have its own characteristics.
Yamaha make high end guitars at a fraction of the cost, you gotta ask yourself is the sound difference worth a £1000 + more than the Asian manufactured guitars built using comparable timbers
experiment with some different strings. I found d'addario EJ12's and EJ17's my favourites. They seem very clear to me. I had tried on a couple of occasions the coated Elixir NANOWEB 12-53's Phosphor Bronze...over twice the price, and as they claim, they do last longer. But, the tone wasn't as nice to me as the D'addario EJ's. I found the EJ's much clearer and fuller sounding.

I noticed the same thing
All 3 are excellent in their own way. I own an FG5 and am VERY happy with it.
I have an FG5 on order, I cannot wait. Sold a Taylor to get it!!!
FG5

this is such a sick version of the waltz
FG5 for me
FG5 wins! It has a lovely neck too, ebony fingerboard feels much better with some lemon oil, what strings is used makes a huge difference in sound.
What strings do you prefer?
@@mountfairweather Martin Retro Monel .013 set for a specific vintage tone.
FG5 kills both.

Fg5 for me
Fg5❤
Love my FGX5
Why does the fg5 sound good even though it's the cheapest?
Not sure
Cheap African Mahogany sounds a lot like the expensive type. Add to that the terrified top which the others don’t have and FG for the win.

I have a fg3x. It's fantastic. Not as pricey. Crazy value
Sweetwater cut me a deal ... last holiday season, so I got the FG5. FG3 is A Great guitar, and Bang for Buck !
@rickthomas9278 Can't fo wrong with yamaha. A friend bought a Martin recently. It's nice, but doesn't compare to my fgx3

Just received my FG5.
…it rings like a bell..
I play it a lot lighter then I ever played a guitar.
Martin for me, well
balanced
FG5 win. Not even close contest
It definitely FG5 wins here
As stated in part one, the J45 sounds sweet, but being a huge Yamaha fan, thats my pick. And I cant afford a J45 anyway...😊

Great video would love to know whats the song you are playing
Tennessee Waltz

What's that song you played?? I can't find it and I always hear it

Until you get the the FG9's.
With a pick the D18 and the Yamaha sounded Slightly better ( listening through earphones )😊😊😊
FG5 Yamaha for me
My Martin x series sounds ok
J45
I wanted the FG5 to win, but I have to say J45. But sounds is like underwear, it’s personal thing.
I have a fg5 and am not happy with it. It’s not clear.

SJ200 smokes all three but it's all subjective!
It’s also 3000 dollars more than a FG5, so it better sound superior 😂
@cargueone1971 🤣 true!
I believe the SJ200 is a jumbo size body. So its not quite an apple to apple comparison.
FG5 not even fight
