Thanks for the feedback. I was unsure how people would react to this. I've had fans ask for Ranked by LORE to return, but it was hard to find creature groups that worked well, so this might be the future of the series. It was still fun to write and is the right blend of informative and entertaining, so hopefully it gets enough views to support more going forward. We'll see!
@@MagicArcanumI would love to see both personally, I think there are some creature types with rich histories and some more interesting variants that more involve mixing game mechanics and lore

mtg story has taken a nose dive, and he couldve done some lotr explanation videos but thats only for so long....youtube is a tide but i just made sure i was subbed (stupid stupid stupid)
Could it be the content they have been doing about that other TCG causing the exidous? I mean I'm not a fan of it since I'm personally only into MTG but I'm not gonna unsubcribe.
This video speaks to me as someone with a Marchesa (Black Rose) EDH deck, which is BUILT on "life as a resource" as a theme. I personally like to throw in Staff of Compleation as the perfect life paying artifact from my deck as it perfectly summarizes the plane it comes from while still being potent. Also, found your channel trying to figure out the Phyrexian shenanigans and hope more ppl find your channel; ur vids are incredible this side of the multiverse. In fact, I look forward to a (potential?) sequel to "Behind the Battles" (perhaps as we approach the upcoming sets) as I'm curious to see ur speculation/explanations of MotM's other battle cards.
4:40 Ah, but it does loop them _and_ fit with the flavor of my D&D megadungeon-inspired Grenzo, Dungeon Warden commander deck which runs a rotating cast of classic D&Dish wandering monsters who all rise up from the depths of my library dungeon to harass my opponents. Whether I stick it on the battlefield with my Goblin Welder, or draw it with my Keen Duelist to the surprise and delight(?) of target opponent, I find it a fun include.
Oh, for sure Vilis. Not only does he have the same 1/1 rate Griselbrand does, he comes equipped with removal and can draw you cards without you paying life. Love him
I'm just disappointed there's no backstory for Vilis, because he's great. And unlike Griselbrand, he's not so powerful that winning off of him feels a dirty.
We don't have much information surrounding Vilis, Broker of Blood but boy is he a unit! Also when you cast reanimate on him you lose then life when he is on the battlefield meaning you draw the cards from the life loss. Spicy spicy boy
HEY, few days ago I decided to try something in Arena's Historic Brawl with Beledros! Added some power healers like Sheoldred the Apocalypse and Aetherflux Reservoir (which is one of the win conditions) besides many "pay life draw cards" effects and I'm having a blast!
I might have zoned out, but was Vilis, Broker of Blood mentioned? He's legendary, and my sweet, baby, first deck boy. Won me a game today after beating myself down to 2 life and drawing a ton of cards, then stabilizing with help from Sheoldred until I could combo.
I did not mention Vilis, mostly because he never appeared in the story, so his L and R scores were both pretty much 0, and not good enough to get him among the Top 10. He is a cool card though!
Font of Agonies is one of my favorite non legendary pay life cards. While it itself you don't pay life for, you need to pay life to get the blood counters. Firstly, it's got such a metal card name that epitomizes what it does (the fountain holds the blood you spill), the flavor text is unsettling, and the art is creepy as hell. While not as generically powerful, in a pay life deck, it's such efficient removal
Sorry your subscribers are down 😢 there has been a bit of lull in "magic story" recently. Maybe you can explain more old lore? You’re one of my favorite channels…keep up the great vids 😇
Griselbrand may be the best machine to turn lives into cards, but that's no more a question. Thanks to Atraxa we may not pay lives to draw anymore, but get more lives along the way 🙂
But she's more of a principle. A tutor implies one in one instruction, something you would be hard pressed to recieve from one of the 5 highest ranked staff at the school.
If I remember correctly, at the time of Strixhaven the school's dragon founders are not active faculty and only occasionally showed up there, so Beledros wouldn't literally be a teacher.
As for lifetaking nonlegend cards, I like Peer into the Abyss. Although to be fair my favourite target for it isn't myself, as much as it's my opp while I have Sheoldred on the field.
on the topic of Crovax: is there any sort of story implication(other than gameplay/balancing) for why certain creatures are 0/0 and enter with +1/+1s? Hydras make sense, you get as many heads as you pay for, but Crovax and others like him I don't get
Crovax is a vampire, and must consume blood from others to keep himself alive. If you don't feed him someone each of your upkeeps, he gets weaker, until he eventually dies. Adding and removing +1/+1 counters is a great way to show his relative health based on how often he gets to feast.
I'm inspired to make a joke commander deck where it's just full of cards where it just slowly kills the person piloting the deck with no up value what so ever and features every "you lose the game" condition. I wouldn't trick people into playing the deck, but rather set a personal challenge to see how fast I could go to lose the game in commander, mostly because I think it'd be hilarious to just absolute decimate oneself in a spectacular way. Imagining the commander is Demonlord Belzenlok and every other card in the deck has cmc 4 so casting the commander is basically instant death, but the catch is you hype up casting the commander the entire game and then you just lose once you get him out, that sort of thing. But the catch the one time you do that you gotta turn the joke deck into an actual deck which would probably be an orzhov pillow fort style deck where you find ways to make everyone feel the same detrimental effects as you do but you find ways to keep yourself alive the longest. I wouldn't have any idea what that commander would be at present. I'll probably come back here later if I think of something or someone mentions something.
I rather like the flavor of Kothophed Soul Hoarder, you're gonna draw cards whether you want to or not, and none of this namby-pamby lifegain like a certain other legendary demon.
Kothophed and Belzenlok make you draw cards, Razaketh doesn't have lifelink; Griselbrand is the odd one out. Vilis is basically what Griselbrand should have been--powerful without being broken, and doesn't just gain you the life right back.
As we wait to see where the magic story goes, do you plan to go back and cover the stories you haven't done yet, or wait until they go back to the plain like you did with Innastrad ?
Going back and recapping previous stories tends to be a lot of work for not a lot of views. Most of my traffic comes through search, and it's not like a ton of people are typing "What happened in Rivals of Ixalan?" these days. Even with the help of us returning to Innistrad, those lead-up recaps you're referring to also didn't do great, which is kind of unfortunate. I see people asking about the old stories pretty often, but then nobody shows up to actually watch when I do them.
@@MagicArcanum I'm sorry to hear that. While I enjoy all your content, the story recaps are definitely my favorite. Regardless, you keep doing what you're doing, and I'll keep looking out for your next video.
The Commander precon decks are notorious for including interesting or unusual cards like this, but not giving us any actual story or details behind it. So as of right now, I cannot tell you how a sliver made it to Amonkhet, or how it got eternalized.
This isn't a list of every legend, just the ones that fill out the LORE scorecard best. Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor has an ability that triggers on combat damage but can work for your opponents in multiplayer games, so it's somewhat unreliable at turning your own life into victory. In other words, he's cool, but not good enough to hang with the others on my list.
It's not bad to like it, but it is widely known to have been one of the worst-selling sets of all time. Over the years, individual cards from that era did rise in popularity (thanks mostly to Commander, and the block's abundance of legendary cards that work great in the format) but aside from that, anyone who claims to really love original Kamigawa is often doing it to make a point about how they are contrarian and "liked it even when nobody else did"
It's explained in the description and in previous videos in this series, but in short, each card can earn up to ten points in four categories: "Legendary" which looks how big of an impact they had in the stories, "Otherworldly" which looks at how fresh or unusual or magical the design of the character is, "Reflection" which looks at how well the card captures what the character does in the story, and then for this video E was "efficiency," measuring how effective their ability was at turning life into victory.
Leaving a comment to boost your stats lol, the channel is a good middle ground between the overproduction of Rhystic Studies and the professor making a one off lore vid lol
All of my Magic stuff for the past 8 weeks or so has been underperforming (look at the views on Top 10 Fights, Top 10 Story Spotlights, and even Behind the Battles: Alara - Kylem) I don't think it's the addition Battle Spirits Saga that's the problem.
Sad to hear yall lost subscribers especially since its not hard to just... stay subscribed? im sure LOTR and Commander Masters had a big impact on yall's channel (being outside the mtg story) but the LORE videos and plane guides are wonderful!
Yes, a summer without a story-driven set definitely didn't help, but I was also surprised at how eagerly people would drop their subscription when I tried other forms of content just to keep things afloat. I can only hope they'll come (crawling) back when we get into the next release, Wilds of Eldraine, and tell everyone what's happening there!
I dont think the subscriber drop is related to not talking a out legendary cards but instead the uptick of videos in that timespan being about battle spirits saga. We dont care about that game.
First, you don't get to speak for everyone and say "we don't care about that game." Those videos have thousands of views, so people are watching them. That's not the problem. UA-cam does a great job showing which videos result in the gain or loss of subscribers. My Top 10 Story Spotlights and Top 10 Fight Cards both had huge negatives, which appears to be because they were generic top tens and not driven by the story. And even so, the addition of Battle Spirits Saga content hasn't reduced the frequency or quality of my Magic content. If anything, it improved it, because those videos earned me more money and sponsorships, which in turn fund better production across the whole channel. You should be glad I'm doing content for other games, not unsubscribing because of it.
Regarding the drop in folowers, I like the lore videos only. The EDH videos lose me every time. Also, I watch but do not subscribe to anyone. The way UA-cam works, I see suggested videos from the channels I pop into.
There is a badge next to your name that says you have been subscribed for two years. Also, I don't really do EHD videos, so I'm not sure what you're referring to...
Could it be the content you guys have been doing about that other TCG causing the exidous? I mean I'm not a fan of it since I'm personally only into MTG but its not gonna me unsubcribe.
I'm still making Magic content with the same frequency and quality as I always have. The Battle Spirits Saga stuff is in addition to my other videos. If anything, they help make the Magic stuff better, because they provide additional income and sponsorship opportunities that directly subsidize the Magic content, so everyone wins. Even if someone isn't a fan of BSS, they could just ignore it and still enjoy all the same Magic stuff that presumably got them to subscribe in the first place. More to the point, UA-cam analytics gives me a great breakdown of each individual video's performance. All my Magic content for the past 8 weeks or so has been far below channel average in terms of views and attracting new subscribers. Top 10 Story Spotlights and Top 10 Fight Cards, especially, were some of the worst performing videos I've ever had, and I can only assume it's because they were generic top ten lists and not something truly "story driven," which has otherwise been a theme for the channel.
@@MagicArcanum I wasn't trying to being critical as to why you do BSS, I was speculating if that could be a reason. Im not a content creator so I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about anyway lol.
Oh I didn't take your comment to be critical! I was just trying to share my own understanding through the data I've collected. You're not the first person to casually suggest the Battle Spirits stuff is the problem, but I'm trying to prove it is beyond that (as much as I would like it to be an easy and simple fix lol)
Actually yeah. For years I just accepted that the Magic community had huge pockets of toxic and antagonistic players, but after getting into other games recently (like Battle Spirits Saga) I now realize it doesn't have to be this way. By reminding viewers that I do read all the comments and that they do have a personal effect on me, I'm hoping to encourage fans to think twice about what they post, and do their part to make our community a bit more inviting and enjoyable to partake in.
Maybe the reason you started to lose subscribers was the fact that you started posting non-magic-related videos. Once I started to see only posts about a game named Saga...something I was considering looking somewhere else for magic lore, most of the content looks so random right now, so out of focus. And also, the name Saga from the other game confused me for a while with the sagas from magic. I stopped watching other channels because they started to post things like warhammer and other games non related with mtg, in part, because I wasn't interested in those other games, and in part because the tittles confused me with the mtg warhammer crossover, and kinda felt like a clickbait even though it wasn't.
But you didn't see "only posts about a game named Saga." I still made Magic videos with the same frequency and quality I always have. The Battle Spirits Saga content was in addition to all that. If anything, it made my Magic content better, because it gave me more income and sponsorship opportunities, which let me focus on making the best Magic stuff I could, rather than worrying about how I was going to afford rent this month. I thought people would support content for other games, or at worst ignore it, but I don't see any point in unsubscribing from the channel, because all the Magic stuff that presumably brought a subscriber in is still there.

I'm sorry you lost followers, they don't know what they're missing!
