A lot of family history for me, and not only on a personal level. Firstly my grandfather was an RAF cook who was based in that cookhouse at war time, and use to bike it to Bev to court my grandmother. I myself was there after Army basic training in 89, and arrived at the barracks in Feb 90 to start my trade training at Leconfield. A red double decker would pick us all up in the morning after scran and bring us back at the end of play. It was better to be based here as it was a smaller camp while trade training went on. I left in the May for a posting to Germany. Although I am originally from Bev (and all my family live there) I now live in Wales and have done for quite some time. I would love to have seen a vid on the accommodation blocks🤣. Cheers for the memories team👍
Great memories of Army Cadets early 80’s doing orienteering on the airfield during a snow blizzard 🥶 Much later in my Regular Army days doing Combat driver training & picking up packed lunches before the days drive
Nice to hear someone who actually knows what he's on about, and once 'on the inside' as it were. We used to drive passed this place, once month, en route to the Kellyfield sale ground (Dee & Atkinson) in the good old days of agricultural collective sales. I've often wondered what it was like inside some of those buildings. It's a pity that so many sites have been systematically trashed, so very nice to see this one is, for now at least, still fundamentally intact, and in decent shape. When we were kids, we used to explore redundant WW2 sites, and the parallel is quite stark - They were then, in about the same condition as this now. The sad part is that left to their own ends, these sites will end up like the WW2 sites are today. Anyway, you've picked up another subscriber! Well done guys!
@@ALWResearchTeam They we’re indeed. This would have been 1979/80. The airfield itself was gone, but a lot of the rest remained. Officers mess, a couple of hangars etc. There were a few ghost stories associated with the place too, although I wouldn’t be surprised if the stories were there to spook the lads on stag. Maybe not though as it was bombed during the war, resulting in loss of lives. Lest we Forget.
I did a weekend training thing there army youth team and broke the record for the assault course in a head to head against the pti. I made a snarky comment questioning the fitness of the instructors. Got my name and time on the wall and a handshake and 'stellar effort' comment off the fellow. Not bad for a civvy. Good memories.
Oh the memories, shame the NAAFI building had gone. I remember marching around that square between the cookhouse and NAAFI. Oh the days, I'd reopen that as a bad lads camp and not even do the place up. I remember first getting hold of the SA80, that bloody sling took some working out but was very handy, sure either was the only sling I used were you could have the weapon in alert, strapped close to chest or used to carry weapon like a back pack.they was a fair few issues with that weapon, check gautf kept falling off, using your left arm over the top was wierd, I believe the first rifles had issues with barrels warping too. Armalite 5.56mm mag, multi use across weapons, not good for blanks though, anyway enough from me could go on forever. One more thing, JR mess was junior ranks mess upto Corporal.
Yes those slings were fiddly indeed! Great to hear you experienced the base in its better days :) The naffi building is still there but a bit battered now
Jeeez, it looked like there was a lot of cooking done in that gaff, judging by the amount of extraction. Nice look around at somewhere local to me in Brid.
I want to do an RAF base. Tried at year, was a building site, turning to houses, missed it!. Cambridgeshire somewhere. Failed. Want another, old homes and buildings and a place middle of nowhere, get the drone up. Not near an airport of some sort :). Nice they let you look, leave the keys hanging out the front door padlock.
Love a good RAF base, i was shocked to learn actually how many there were around the UK.
They’re plentiful and all interesting:)
Once you know the general layout of a RAF base, looking on google maps you can still make them out even though the runways have been long removed.

Sounds chilly on the airfield in winter. RCT days feel like yesterday
Another great video, look forward to the next instalment.😀
Hi Andy, thank you very much
Another great explore. Thank you Andy and Team ALW 💜
Hi WinnieWitch thanks so much :)
Fantastic guys, more please.
Coming up :)
This is where i was accommodated during my driver training in 1989. Obviously many a meal in the scoff house.

Hello there, it certainly was a privilege to explore this building :) part 2 coming this Sunday
I used to have to do stag at Driffield whilst doing my driver training at Leconfield.
Hello there, Stag at Driffield would have been long nights. I would have liked to see the full base before the vandals smashed it up

I have read about the bombing of the base in WW2, I’ll possibly cover this in the future. Lest we forget
Ooooh Nice Building, just needs a clean and it would make a nice fun house
Great video and explore,
This is quite a big place, the size is quite impressive...🙂👍

Where would I be able to get a copy of the camp layout please. building use etc. Ta!
Hello there. I have one somewhere in the office. I’ll put it up on my community page if I can find it and I’ll scan it in.

I have been today to have a look around some of the disused buildings, most of the site is being used for AIR soft now

Hello there, it sure had a massive kitchen!
Humberside! ! I left Driffield school in '82 and have never recognised it ,"East Yorkshire " all the way
Officially humberside only existed for a couple of years but it seems to have stuck in certain places
Only known as humberside by the numpties that don't know any better.

Me Dad was in the RAF a lot of years ago this could have been one of his bases !

Good explore. Andy did you serve on HMS Invincible?
I did yes :)
