    Incredible, literally two days ago I was googling around "how does an octave fuzz work," and even though the explanation is rather straightforward (just take the abs of the signal and remove the offset), the videos weren't in-depth, so I was thinking to myself, "I wish CSGuitars made an episode about octave fuzzes." The way you connect the theory, the technical demonstration with the oscilloscope and the frequency profile, and the applications (like why the upper octave may misbehave and how to make the best of it, and why single coils are better because pickups are "in the circuit"), is unparalleled.

      It's an incredibly simple, yet classy enclosure - that's enough to make it more appealing than many other effects.
      The circuit board inside is printed and shaped to the same design.
      It's nice to see this level of attention to branding.

    I can't put my finger on what it exactly is, but i somehow like the sound of a fuzz way more than a regular distortion. Maybe it's that brokenness or that hint of chaos it imparts on the sound.
    Well... whatever it is... Your demos were pure eargasms. :D

    Hi Colin, could you do a TATA on low impedance pickups, like those found in Les Paul recording etc. I know it’s a bit of a niche but there isn’t much out there about how they differ from “normal” pickups, and the circuit requirements to get the signal to where it can be used through a normal set up. Cheers. I’ve spent most ( since 1987!) of my adult life working in the professional music industry, from being a touring roadie, mainly a back line tech, but I’ve done everything from rigging and lighting to tour manager etc. I’ve also been a musician, I hesitate to say pro, but I made all of my income from it, I’m just not that good, to working in a luthiers workshop to having my own business making violins these days. I’ve got to say, your channel is the best single source of reliable information for anyone who wants to understand their guitar gear. No stupid old wives tales, no daft “Tonewood” arguments etc etc. Well done, keep it up.

    The out of sync scanlines during the track was a nice touch. I really enjoyed the wammy madness during the red strat sound sample. It's right up there with the tone of those p90s that you wound. It sounded really pretty.

    The seminal Seattle band, Mudhoney, was my first introduction to the world of Fuzz, and in their world it was cranked. I think Steve is currently using a Fuzz War and maybe Mark has the same Superfuzz he had in 1988.
    Anyway, when I bought my first Big Muff at around 14, when I was a vastly less-experienced player with as well-trained an ear, I immediately intuited that single coils were better with the pedal than humbuckers. So, thanks for the confirmation!

    That nugget about lead lines being mixed to a lower level but standing out because they occupy a frequency space that was empty before was a game changer. Totally changed the way I thought about occupying a space in the mix.

      @@VIDS2013 When I took it in 2000 it wasn’t very common. In fact, our prof wrote the text book which in our case was bad since he had zero personality and could only explain things in his monotone way. Hopefully the course is more widespread now as the subject has so much utility from studio engineers to speaker designers to the average curious home recording musician.

    The odd harmonics of an overdrive pedal would disappear with octave fuzz, change to square?
    Playing in pos 2 lately between humbucker and single coil, like a P90 sound. Tone on 10, and volume variations 9 or 10. Though for a humbucker I would do volume at 1 and increase amp volume.

      you´ll need at least on more Logic stage to subdivide the frequency (cmos counters, flip flops). Without it, you can get some instable textures of octave down (fuzz factory and some opamp Comparator with hysteresis could play with these)

    Hey Colin, what is the difference between a guitar amp and a bass amp? What makes it 1 or the other?

    • @ViviSectia
      @ViviSectia 3 роки тому

      It's mostly just the frequency response being more geared towards one or the other and if it's a combo amp then the speaker is made to handle bass frequencies better since the low frequencies of a bass have the protentional damage a guitar speaker at high volumes but high frequencies of a guitar can't damage a bass speaker. They are interchangeable though and you can use either. In fact, bass amps are often used by guitarists to the point that the Bassman which was originally a bass amp became used almost exclusively by guitarists.
