Crikey Spike what a tour! Of course I have seen pictures and postcards of Cliftons from its heyday, but never in a million years would I have imagined what an amazing place it is. I am totally GOBSMACKED!!
I remember surprising my boyfriend at the time for his birthday to Clifton’s mainly for the tiki bar. This place is spectacular and so much to see. Such a great place ❤
Spike! Thank you so much for doing a tour of this beautiful establishment. I learned about Clifton’s back in 2020, and have been eagerly awaiting the day I can visit! Hope everyone has a blast on the 3rd!
Finagled our way in at 2am. The security guard made us go up the stairs on the left to the top floor tiki bar. Since it was empty it was kinda eerie, but Ben killed it on the build.
I’ve played Clifton’s many times inside the Brookdale Ballroom and took my break between sets inside Pacific Seas. I hope Clifton’s can draw the crowds it use to. Went to Pacific Seas a few weeks ago and it was the busiest room in the entire place.
Hi Spike! I love your tours! Thanks for sharing these great places with all of us! It's because of your UA-cam tour of the (newly reopened) Royal Hawaiian, that we made a cocktail stop there yesterday afternoon before heading to dinner at a nearby restaurant. While at the Royal Hawaiian, I ordered the original Mai Tai (am such a traditionalist!), and my hubs got a Mount Gay Dark & Stormy. Both mighty tasty. And the Lumpia stick rolls are deeeelicious! Even paid extra for the palm tree festooned bar glass! Anyways.....Can't wait for your tour of LA's new Trader Vic's when it opens! Meanwhile, Happy New Year, and again, Mahalo Nui Loa!
WOW, thanks for sharing...I visited my aunt n cousins in LA in the early 60's, whatta trip, your surf vibe music really takes me back, that young girl from Iowa was blown away at all the exotica so foreign to me then, I thought my older LA cousin was just a wild child, now I wish I'd been more aware... in Florida now exploiting my tiki fixation, you have helped me drag stuff into my tiny tiki in my breezeway and backyard jungle to help with memories long gone and anew and affirms to me that MORE IS MORE...THANKS!
Man what a place. All those details. I could just wander there for hours looking. And thank you for the tour. Its also on my bucketlist now. Damn you 😄
I get vibes of what the old Nat Geo clubs must have been like. That deco meets adventure, dark and mysterious, a little mismatched but perfection. This is amazing and I can't wait to make a trip out there at some point!
What an Amazing place! The Deco areas give me Hollywood Tower vibes. Next time I am in LA (not sure when that will be) I will have to check that place out Thanks Have A Great show and Cheers to A great New year! PS I f I were A ghost I'D hang there too
I grew up in L.A. and ate at Clifton's satellite locations, but never got to visit this incredible restaurant in downtown. I can't wait to visit the tiki bar next time I go back to Los Angeles.
What a place. I've been to a few bars and clubs that felt somewhat like this but not to this sort of level. It almost feels like a dream in how it shifts from floor to room and so on.
Can't wait to be there Friday! That'd be a great idea to have specialty drinks made with the Breezeway Blend. Too bad you can't bring some bottles of the Breezeway to sell, as it's not readily available up here in the San Fernando Valley.
@@BreezewayCocktailHour My friend's back in town and is excited to go with me Friday. Remind me, they don't serve any food, just the drinks, right? We'll need to grab some grub first so we can savor some Breezeway drinks the rest of the night. 😎
I remember all three DTLA Clifton's from childhood in the 1950's, also Bahooka which sadly is gone and have been to Sam's Seafood many times, last time was just before they closed but heard they may get resurrected? Also frequented Damon's in Glendale.
Second time watching cuz I feel asleep... long day that day. Just noticed you saying there are ghosts there. WELL, I'VE PAUSED @ 1:46 seconds because.... is that guy sort of singing the words "there it is" maintenance or a disembodied visitor? Just asking.
Today's Clifton's is generally better than it ever was. I get the nostalgia for & appeal & philosophy of when it was owned by Clifford Clifton, but time, demographics & economics are more demanding now than in the past. It still would be nice to have a good cafeteria on the ground floor, but that's more of a 1950's-family-type thing. The biggest hurdle, however, is dtla not seeming too hands-off to people accustomed to either the clean-safe suburbs or the magnetic London-Paris-Tokyo-type big city.
Beyond explainable rodent infestation, paranormal is apparently a real thing. A YT vid about a bar somewhere in New York (state) details how quite a few eyewitnesses, including both employees & customers, experienced poltergeist activity & apparitions. Lots of other vids about the same thing. The reality of the paranormal is both surprising & unsettling
I enjoy your videos, but you need to work on your lighting. I have to increase the lighting on my computer in order to see the vast majority of the things you're showing in your videos. Sorry man.
@@BreezewayCocktailHour No. The problem was on my end. Cousin had 'borrowed' my BRANDNEW Chromebook, and had failed to mention, oh I dropped it. So now I working and watching your channel from my old PC. I really enjoy your show!
This is nice and all but it’s a shame that Clifton’s cafeteria became a nightclub/bar to cater to the hipsters and art snobs, ultimately feeding the gentrification of DTLA.
@@BreezewayCocktailHour Thanks for making this point, Spike. This place is so extraordinary, how could anyone gripe about what it's become? Wait a minute - there's a certain cohort that lives to do that. Meanwhile, I shared your video with everybody I'm still talking to on your coast. Love it.
@@tammiskeefe4812well my past experiences going to this place do confirm the criticism here, the first time in I believe 2018 I couldn't even get in because they had some restrictive door policy that nightclubs sometimes have. The second time I did get in later in the year and it was indeed full of hipsters who really weren't about appreciating anything to do with tiki. I'm willing to go give it another try, I'm trying to be open minded. But what he said in the video at the end about people overlooking it, the reason why wasn't because they haven't heard about it, the reason why is because it was too much of a club atmosphere and not some all inclusive tiki bar like most are.

Ive been going to Cliftons for decades and so happy to see it back open.
I love Clifton’s so much!
Thanks for the tour Spike. Clifton’s always seemed like a mythical place from a hundred years ago… looking forward to visiting now!
You gotta go, it’s incredible.
What an amazing place! Great episode! Will take many views to see everything!

Deco plus tiki reminds me of that old TV show Tales of the Gold Monkey. Pre-WW2 South Pacfic
Clifton's is amazing -- but now i need to go back to see all that upstairs!

I know, right? I get those vibes too!
I was waiting for 1 of the Breezeway all stars to pop out of somewhere, maybe Panties. What a place.
I grew up in L.A. and ate at Clifton's satellite locations, but never got to visit this incredible restaurant in downtown. I can't wait to visit the tiki bar next time I go back to Los Angeles.
Wow!! Ok I know where I need to try to visit next time I’m visiting California. 😍 Absolutely amazing!
It really is amazing!
Went to Clifton's for New Year's Eve Year's ago. Haven't been to Clifton's and Pacific Seas since before covid.
Looking forward to seeing this place in person.
Loved playing there. I still have a Clifton's wooden drink token.
Me too… it was just that load-in that was a pain. 😵💫 oh, and the street zombies.
What a bar!! So many levels and things to see! Almost museum like in areas with all the taxidermy. Love to visit this place!!
It’s really amazing
Great video tour... thank you!

This is the raddest thing ever!

Wow such an amazing place. Wish i could be there Jan 3rd
RIP Bahuka! Thanks for a great video!
Woowww incredible location!
I shot for Glamour Bunny in there a few years ago too!
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Be there this Friday, what are the hours you'll be spinning? My best, Doc Ray
I start at 9, but it's free to get in before 9pm.
Awesome brother... See you there... 1st round's on me🍹
Thanx Spike! It was a super fun build! Crazy history there!! 🤙🍹🗿👌
👻
That's quite a collection of stuff. How much weight can this building hold?
Do we need tickets for this event? If so, where do we get them?
If you get there before 9:00, there is no cover. Hope to see you there!
Do you have to rsvp to enter the tiki bar?
You don't have to RSVP. And it's free before 9pm.
It’s in the stairwell behind a mirror
🤡
What is?
Hi Spike, will Sarah be at your event?
I think she will be.
@BreezewayCocktailHour Crap i have to work! Oh well Happy New Year's to you and have a great event!🐸
Hey, When I have to "Explain Tiki" I point them to you. But I had to explain Bob Newhart to a Frenchman.
Haha… I appreciate that
Cover charge at this place right?
Only after 9pm
What time will you spin the 45’s?
I start at 9, but it's free to get in before 9pm.
You need Palmer in the boat with you
Palmer has been in the boat with me before.
You need to go back and find the episode. Spike has been in the boat a few times, I think it’s the cap that draws him to it. 😂
@@BreezewayCocktailHour I know and it's always been fun. Palmer being your co-DJ would be beyond funny.
…so when the place is open…are we allowed to wonder around like what your doing or are we relegated to our tables?
You can wander most of the building. Probably not the very top level that I went up to.

Wow, I need to check this out.
Most ghosts are just rats.
😂 rats dressed up as little children in old timey clothes??

@BreezewayCocktailHour yes??? 😹
I want to meet the Clinton's ghost
😬
Lol nobody really knows about this?!?!? It's been around for ALMOST 10 years
I enjoy your videos, but you need to work on your lighting. I have to increase the lighting on my computer in order to see the vast majority of the things you're showing in your videos. Sorry man.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll have to work on it... but that's odd because the computer that I edit on is only at 75% brightness.

The previous busy model was no longer sustainable. They tried it for a long time. Andrew saved the place from destruction.
