    I still wear those timeless wool coats like your gran’s! I wear my 40-year old Dior burgundy wool coat all the time and have since added to my collection, always in the highest quality I can get. Every time I wear that oldest coat I get tons of compliments, such classic styles never date and it’s so beautifully designed and made. I wore it every cold day of my whole career and it looks never-worn, such amazing quality was standard in the 80s. I hope it comes back!

    I have gone through many fashion stages in my life but always preferred the hippy look as that was my era. At 68 I now wear midi tea dresses with wool tights & combat boots in winter with fair isle cardigans & sandals in summer. I like vintage jewellery & I only have a few coats, one a green wool duffle for winter. Luckily I am still as slim as I was when I was young, but the days of showing my skin is over. I feel liberated to have got rid of so many clothes that I never wore.

    Great video. Completely agree about how the colours that suit you change when you go grey. I can no longer wear black, or deep red, or turquoise, all of which were my favourite colours when I was brunette. I used to also wear chocolate brown really well. Now I suit a clear navy (was awful on me before), some greys look fantastic (didn't expect that!) and possibly my favourite new colour is teal green. And I never suited green before, in any shade.

    I think what you’re showing there when you discuss parkas is what we in the US would call a utility jacket. I completely agree about these, this is a 20-year+ old trend that doesn’t look current anymore. I dutifully bought several back then, and also denim jackets and a black leather moto jacket, because they were on all the wardrobe “must-have” lists. But, I never wore any of them even once! Neither the very casual, nor tough/edgy styles of these are really mine. I’m also not buying the current Barn Coat trend, it’s just not me, nor do I have a country lifestyle that would warrant such a sturdy item. I do have a few down-filled puffer parkas for going to the mountains or desert here in California, which get a lot colder than my coastal location (San Francisco) does. I just bought a new Ralph Lauren cream color, faux-fur trimmed, down parka, I think it’s still in style. I think a neutral color like this looks more current than the old-lady lilacs, hot pinks, etc., that are marketed for mature women. I really need a casual, lightly insulated windbreaker for my exercise walks, like a Patagonia jacket, but they never come in neutrals, just those bright, so-called “fun” colors that I won’t wear. Weather and activity allowing, I’m always going to choose a structured, tailored 100% wool lined “city” long coat, or similar blazer for autumn and spring. Age 64, thanks for all your great advice. (I promoted your channel vigorously in the beginning and am happy to see it’s taking off. My only suggestion is to minimize introductory material and jump into the content as soon as you can. I DO wear it now (after much thinking...) - with straight black jeans, kick-a$$ "tough girl" boots (military short) with silver metal black belt on the jeans, strong silver earrings, sometimes a thick strong silver necklace, sleeves pushed back and walk with purpose. Hair is grey/silver/brown and put back, strong-ish ear liner and lipstick. The cardigan flows behind me (as much as it can for a heavy thick one), and i love this look on me. I am rather slender and have a small face, so clunky jewelry would overwhelm my face, whereas it looks great on women with bigger faces and features. Also depending on the shape of the face, the eyes, nose, mouth, and chin all are things to consider matching with jewelry or clothing. Most clunky jewelry is bigger than my eyes, so the jewelry becomes more noticeable than my eyes. I love wearing jewelry that mimics the sizes nature gave me. For example, my eyes are a bit almond so patterns with that size and shape that ressemble my eyes, look great on me. It's really learning how to see your shapes, your features, your coloring, your energy, and enhance what nature gave us.

I’m petite and nearly all the tops I see are frumpy tunics, wildly patterned or in old lady pastel colors and capri cut stretchy pants. I don’t want to wear juniors, as I’m 67. I can’t stand tops that are polyester, boxy, and shapeless. I often question who the stores’ buyers are that they think older women want to wear that crap?! I appreciate all the great tips! The only thing I politely disagree with (for me) is the parka jacket with the drawstring waist. I LOVE THOSE!! I've always been drawn to this style jacket, probably because I feel like it gives me waist definition, even though I'm thin, and also, I like a more feminine style jacket. I've always thought of them as a classic style. If they make me look frumpy, so be it! I certainly don't feel frumpy when I wear them.

    In my 60's, lucky to be tallish and still wearing small sizes. It's great to see women 60 plus on the catwalks in the big designer shows, looking fab, grey and non-classically beautiful.
    I don't want to look frumpy- so I shop where the young women shop and choose carefully- as you advised, with some rules! Must be quality fabric that sits well, and wash well. Fit that is flattering, colour is important, and will it work hard in my wardobe? No short dresses, no cutouts, no deep cleavege/side boob! Treat prints with caution! For me, top half must be structured.
    That said, I try to be a little adventurous trying on in the changeroom. Just bought a beautifully cut linen sleeveless (in OZ, it's hot in Summer!) jumpsuit with wider longer length leg! Can add a tee under if worried about the crepey spot on my arms...😆Out of my usual comfort zone, but so happy with it!

    The classic, collared semi-tailered button-up shirt is nice. However, large bust & button-up somehow is more difficult at best. To get it large enough to button correctly without excess tailoring becomes challenging at best. Any other suggestions please?

    • @capsuleclosetstylist
      @capsuleclosetstylist  Місяць тому

      @CM-uq7km Yes this can be the case. So I would suggest two things here, avoid breast pockets and choose shirts in your size that accommodate your bust with shape and darts in the back. If the shirt fits your bust well but is loose around the waist or shoulders have it taken in or if you are able to, take it in yourself. If you find a brand and cut that works, I would get a few of them. Also wear them with a couple of buttons undone at the neck as it will reduce the impact of your bust, buttoning them to the top with only make your bust appear bigger.

    I will say that in addition to wearing over high waisted pants and skirts, I've found that some cropped tops can be useful for wearing over certain plain dresses; they add color, texture and warmth, and create interest that draws the eye up from the stomach area. However, I have one friend who wears those open neck blouses (we wore them in the 80s) and drwstring cut off trousers, and another friend who is slim and short, but insists of wearing those baggy dresses - from an expensive Swedish brand, very Pippy Longstocking, but they do nothing for her. They both say they are not worried about looking fashionable, but then they get offended when people think they are older than they are! I have had my colours done 3 times, but alas had 3 different results, none of which I feel really work, probably not uncommon?

    I would add, pay attention to your shoes, socks or stockings to your gloves. This just a personal preference for me. Remember in the movie 'The Devil Wears Prada' the scene where Miranda glances at Andy measured her starting at the toes and finishing at the head? You may want to reserve those New Balance shoes to relaxed walking style status if you didn't buy them for sports. While it may have been slightly a thrill to show a bit of bare kneecap and leg in your 20's when wearing knee-high boots it will date you exact age when you are no longer less than 30. Never wear a glove that has a stain or dried or fade died fingertips, cracked leather. Reserve that for gardening if you must.

    First time I'm watching one of your videos. I'm in that age category. I'm really turned off by those who are criticizing your terminology and suggestions.
    You are helping us. People out there need to understand you are giving your opinion, and what works for you and others you know. Folks, she is not gospel. We still have the right to choose what we think looks nice on us or not.
    If you're in this age category, you should know by now, that not everything always applies to everyone. So please be kind and gentle to this marvelous woman who looks great, has good suggestions, and takes the time to do her research.
    Now, regarding my thoughts on her suggestions. And they are not cruel or word cringy.
    In regards to parkas, I believe they are more functional than stylish. If you're older and can still be athletic in winter, like skiing, sledding with grandkids, hiking, etc., for me, not everybody, the parka is a better way to go. Warm, lots of pockets, and not so tight that you can't function. These activities are just that, active. They don't have to be stylish. And I'm sure you could probably find some stylish parkas also.
    Colors: Lord have mercy! I've tried with those folks and I think it depends on what time of the year it is and how tanned or ruddy my skin is. I also notice, that every time I change my hair color, I have to go with the tones that work with it.
    That's all. These are just opinions and things that happen with me, not you. But maybe they can be helpful to you, also. Not criticisms. Now, be kind and nice to everyone. ❤🤗❤️

      @phelinephrenzy2358 Thank you this has to be one of the best comments I have received. I agree this video has become very popular very quickly and unfortunately alongside its popularity has been several derogatory comments about my face, home and particularly my hair.
      I would have thought these women over 60 would have better manners, but clearly not. One even describes herself as a life coach, which is ironic!

    This is meant for all the stylists who use algorithm taglines. I like the tips, but maybe we could dispense with equating “frumpy” with “looks that age us”? A lot of comfortable outfits simply don’t photograph very well, especially on larger bodies, but in real life where most of us live they move and drape nicely.

    • @capsuleclosetstylist
      @capsuleclosetstylist  2 місяці тому +4

      @sheilacroisier6446 So is this for me too? All of my content is based on real life experiences of, real people in a career spanning three decades. I do not give advice based on any algorithms. As I say in almost all of my videos it is ok if something does not work for you or if you do not agree with it, you can ignore it.

    • @sheilacroisier6446
      @sheilacroisier6446 2 місяці тому +3

      @@capsuleclosetstylistI sincerely hope it doesn’t apply to you! I’ve only seen a couple of your videos so far and your advice makes good sense. So perhaps I felt safe commenting here rather than on someone else’s channel. Labels like “frumpy” and “aging” seem to appear regularly in the same sentences and video titles. That they show up in my feed is probably the fault of the algorithm, but I do see far too many UA-camrs using these words. I wanted to comment because words repeated so often have power; if we don’t actively resist believing them, they become value judgments. They echo in the mind when I look in a mirror at my round, gray haired self clad in outfits that move well and don’t cling, but will never make me look taller, or thinner, or younger than I am. I do appreciate your styling and color tips, and the advice to wear what we love. Have a lovely day and thanks for answering my comment!

      @sheilacroisier6446 Ah my apologies I may have read this wrong. It is no excuse, but this particular video has been very popular, and when they are popular, they invite a few trolls, so I was likely a little sensitive when I read it! Thank you for taking the time to explain. It is interesting on here because it is sometimes those titles that seem to do well. That said, I hope I try to explain that I am only offering that advise if someone wants it. Ultimately I just want to help people feel better in what they wear. I am glad you enjoy the content and thanks again for taking the time to write ❤️

    I just stumbled across your channel and have to say your advice is among the best that I have heard. I am in Australia, 77 , overweight, even after losing 12 kg last year and losing height, which makes it worse. I carry all my weight around my torso and upper arms. I am a rectangle shape, no waist to speak of, flat bottom, slim legs, about 5’ 2”, and would love to hear your opinion on what style of dress might work for me. I make most of my clothes since I find this is the best way to deal with a body that defies all clothing manufacturers when it comes to fit and style. I know my colours well, age adjusted! I style my hair short as it is very fine and thin. I haven’t worn dresses for about 2 years and my daughter is encouraging me to think again. I think there are many women in a similar situation who haven’t lost their desire to dress well but have given up because they cannot find the right look and fit.

    • @capsuleclosetstylist
      @capsuleclosetstylist  Місяць тому

      @jeansdaughter try a tea dress style. Think of the cut of the 1940's woman. As it comes in a little under the bust then gently flares out. That will give you shape without clinging too much. Thank you for your feedback I really appreciate it.

  • @Jingeb58
    @Jingeb58 Місяць тому +1

    I love long cardigans. They look amazing, as they elongate the body and are always trendy, fun, casual or dressy. I agree with you on baggy dresses, but the better examples you showed, with a cinched waist and pleated/gathered skirt looked like my mother's dresses from the 50s-60s, which are very frumpy indeed. The right colors are definitely important, which is why I don't understand your color choice. Light grey is a down color which brings out those tones in a complexion, unless it is paired with brighter colors, such as yellow or gold. My first thought when I started your video was that you are not feeling well.

    • @capsuleclosetstylist
      @capsuleclosetstylist  Місяць тому +1

      @Jingeb58 As I mentioned in the video, if you have preferences, stick with them-everyone is entitled to their own choices. However, it's simply not acceptable to throw out nasty, unnecessary comments about my personal appearance under the guise of advice. With over two decades of experience in colour and style since 1999, I know what I’m talking about. Silver grey complements my pale blue/grey eyes perfectly. On the other hand, gold would be the absolute worst choice for me, given that my features are predominantly cool. While I appreciate diverse perspectives, I would never presume to challenge a professional with 25 years of expertise online. It's beyond me how you think this is acceptable.

    Collars: I agree if you’re talking about 90s style collars. 1930s/1940s collars are classic and current trendy, though. A structured collar is the worst thing if you’re jowly or your neck is wrinkled because it draws the eye right to your jawline and neck. The rest is pretty good! I’ve never seen a heavy long cardigan, though. I’m short so I wear fitted coat type cardigans so I don’t look like a potato dumpling.

    Yes! 💯 agree with your list. I don't worry much about dressing frumpy or old because I wear classic cuts, or arty monochromatic looks, made with good fabrics. To me, fabric type and quality are a big deal, natural fabrics for me though I do love Rayon now and again. Garment construction is another thing on my list of things important. I screw up once in a while and buy something that doesn't work, mostly because of fit. Young me could wear about any cut or style and so I rarely hit the fitting room. Now it's more important because I have found my shape has changed somewhat.
    One thing I find dated is big fluttery elbow-length sleeves. I get the length requirement, but please God banish the big butterfly sleeves. Get a long-sleeved top and push or roll up the sleeves to just below the elbow. It's more slimming and has better upper-arm camouflage.
    So that's my thoughts. You have a really good channel and I hope you keep at it.😊❤😊.
