That was the uncanny valley for me, the fact that Terminator got the movement even more correct than I expected it would be. I had thought that, though cool at the time, that the movement 'seemed fake' yet this video shows it to be *much more, life-like?...lol
It couldn't even retrieve the ball when it missed, it just stood there. So maybe it could load stuff into the machine for you, is that what you had in mind? A wee way to go yet...
This has the bones to be the ultimate table tennis trainer here. I like how the objective truth was not a win/loss metric. Instead, they optimized for on the fun level / would you play again. There is a life lesson there.
They didnt optimize it on the fun level. That was just a statistic they took at the end. It probably get's +1, when the ball passes the net and -1 if it doesent catch it.
Nah, the by far coolest thing about this table tennis robot is that an employee can just say "i'm going to create more high quality training data for the ai" and then just play table tennis with it 😂
'Classical' table tennis robots are much stronger players. This is basic research just good enough to play with casual players. It sure is a great milestone, but not a competitive one-yet.
Notice where the humans are hitting the ball, rarely does the ball land deeper than half-court, I find this rather odd and it seems intentional, it almost seems catering to the machine's (current) abilities, ie. while there are a couple deep shots in the video, does it have trouble with those? The mechanism itself seems oddly placed deep into the court, when you are playing your paddle is often behind the court (as exhibited by the humans in both examples), only moving in on short balls, though we can't expect optimal machine paddle placement to be equal to optimal for human, just an observation. The human around 4:05 is certainly hitting deeper into the court than the previous examples, and while we don't have a true side view, this machine, the paddle, appears to be positioned more towards the back of the court than the first, notice how it positions its paddle to the side, where the former machine tries to rest stretch centered, unhuman.
I'd say that they intentionally film it in a [high frame rate + fast shutter speed] in order to keep better track of movements and ball. It looks like this when you set you phone video recording to super slow-motion, which does the same of the camera setting
I believe that VR will be an important infrastructure for robot training in the future. A highly realistic physics engine, along with creating digital twins of all robot-related components, will enable the construction of reinforcement learning in a virtual environment. This approach is definitely more likely to achieve goals than directly building robots. I think autonomous driving is also at a turning point from Alpha Go to Alpha Zero; the integrity of real-world data is no longer sufficient to cover all unexpected situations. In the future, countless virtual autonomous vehicles and corresponding sensing systems will be placed on virtual roads for environmental testing.
i imagine google vs openai robot playing table tennis and we all don't have to go to the event because it's live streaming for 3 years before 1 of the robot hit 1 score LOL
Just ignore that this isn't a one man project in someones basement. There's no way anyone or anything outside the view of a camera exists, cameras see everything. always.
@@willguggn2 You didn’t recognize this was a joke? Here’s the explanation of the joke. It’s rather ridiculous to wear a mask playing ping pong. Even ignoring the lack of effectiveness of masks, there’s certainly no danger when you’re playing ping pong,so the image of a person playing ping pong in a mask is already absurd, and that the other entity involved is a robot compounds the absurdity.

They are playing at a beginners level, and the human players seem to be taking it easy on the bot by not smashing or looping the ball. Any table tennis players in the world's top 100,000 should be able to beat this bot.

I would love to know more about why that is. Was PID smoothing and other techniques harmful to the simulation training or just unnecessary?
If a robot can play table tennis then it can do the laundry. Sign me up !

I like having a look at robotics as well as ai when a break through is acieved. Especially since they are so closely related.
B-But... It will never be able to play snooker 😂
they could legit sell the arm as an at home table tennis bot! i would buy the product and the stock!
You might be disappointed at the price of those robotic arms. Still in the tens of thousands AFAIK.

I like how the robot looks sad when it hits the ball into the net.
I wonder how this differs from and improves upon the ping-pong robot that was at CES around 2015.
Why does this robot look like stop-motion animation? Seriously, where's the motion blur?
