The unbelievably fast KUKA robot faces off against one of the best table tennis players of all time. Who has the best technique? Who will win the first ever table tennis duel of human versus robot?
Watch this thrilling commercial of table tennis and robotics performed at the highest level. The KUKA KR AGILUS demonstrates its skills with the table tennis racket - a realistic vision of what robots can be capable of in the future.
Timo Boll, the German table tennis star, is the new brand ambassador for KUKA Robotics in China. The collaboration celebrates the inherent speed, precision, and flexibility of KUKA's industrial robots in tandem with Boll's electrifying and tactical prowess in competition. To celebrate the new KUKA Robotics factory in Shanghai, the thrilling video was a highlight of the Grand Opening on March 11th, 2014. The 20,000 sq. meter space will produce the KR QUANTEC series robot as well as the KRC4 universal controller for the Asian market. Underrated joke

i know right? i edited a decent montage without knowing what the hell i was doing lol.
Concept all a concept
Must be indian editor
I wish I could see this game like a real table tennis game. Like, from one angle, with no cuts or inserted slowmo.
Oh what? I thought this is how a normal tennis table match on video looks like...
fcking yess
Better see how the kibrg collects a tractor in Belarus: ))))) ua-cam.com/video/pTH22-GuUes/v-deo.html
Yeah this video sucks. Is the cameraman on meth?
Lmao, it's a staged promo. No, there's no robot playing table tennis... Yet.
The lack of any sensor to detect the ball should have been telling enough.
I wish they had more angles of video
Yea, this video was a bit simple due to its lack of cuts and angles
Yeah, it would make it easier to watch.
Yeah, felt a bit dull watching it from one angle..
Ya...just back up and let us see the robot work. The constant panning makes it hard to see!
Where you at bro? Why not posting videos?
Editor: so how many angles do you want?
Producer: yes
Producer: All of them
Can we see the raw film?
Thank you.
Dear Dhiego, game footage is only available as part of the commercial. If you want to learn mor about the video, you can watch the behind the scenes clip on our channel. Best regards
KUKARobotGroup So why no link to the behind the scenes clip?I worked with Kuka-Tools they are great but the vid looks fishy to me.
KUKARobotGroup shaky cams, short cuts.. we have all seen in many movies sir.. usually to hide animation..
+Nikola Kos Of course its not real.

A potentially interesting video, ruined by unnecessary drama.
I was thinking the exact same and I'm 14
+Jake Whitaker nobody cares about your age
+Jake Whitaker Me too and I'm 12
+JoJoJoShredder yeah im still a fetus
+David Connelly Well the drama is all it has, I bet the rest is fake. Why bother programming a robotic arm to play table tennis when you can just cgi the whole thing for much less? And of course they made Timo win, he wouldn't agree to star in a commercial that made him look bad.
I'm getting a headache watching this. This cameraman needs to calm tf down.

Take a shot of vodka every time the camera angle changes
mate you could take a shot of fucking bud light for every camera change and it would still end in liver failure due to alcohol poisoning

See you in A&E!
Recording is crap, stop with the slow motion & flipping of the camera... kills the video. Just let them play..
It's nonsense. The robot can do nothing of that sort.
It is because they can't play. I clicked the video because I sas interested in how they got the robot to play but it is a "fake". The robot probably does play but the guy is hitting it to where the robot is going to hit back.
Agreed
It would be easy for any semi experienced player to beat the robot. Even if it was fast enough and calibrated to never miss, its field of range is too short. Easy to hit it where it can't reach. Its just a long advertisement
Better see how the kibrg collects a tractor in Belarus: ))))) ua-cam.com/video/pTH22-GuUes/v-deo.html
Why do robots always look like they're taunting?
I couldn't watch this due to the horrible editing and camera movement.
It seemed like an interesting concept, too. Oh well.
They intentionally moved the camera so much to coverup the stupidity of robot...🤣
Exactly the editing was irritating, too jumpy
And the music is just awful
Completely agree--the camera work was obnoxious to a fault. I'm interested to see how well the machine actually plays, not... this.

2014 "look, how cool is that?!"
2037 "Run for your lives!!!"
We want a live match .
Great edit, but I would have prefered to see an unedited match
Or at least one where Timo Boll actually tried his best.
Unedited = no game
I agree, but still great match!
Exactly my thoughts. Too many cuts.
There is no real match. The whole thing is fake.
There's crazy editing because this is a kuka robot ad. You'd need very fast, very accurate vision systems to play ping pong with a robot. For the time it would take the robot to even receive an image, do the math for the correct position and swing, the ball is already going to be off the table.
I program a Fanuc R1000ia-30ib with said vision systems. It's all but 'fast'.
I learned to program KUKA weld bots years ago - 2 on a rail and one overhead utilizing a synchronized fixture table (350 deg rotation) that all 3 bots were welding at 1" per second (Miller square wave CLE power souce). Assemblies were very complex and had multiple weld requirements for each unit.
Even set up a weld cell using (2) Foronius CMT power units on a KUKA longitudinal seam system to weld 30' galvanized grain elevator legs - 1 on each side and would weld at 3" /second (10 minute production rate). Used a 2 axis robotic arm (each side) rather than a fixed drive to increase production rate by position feedback to the bot controller since the leg sides were inconsistant surface level - basically each leg was made from 2 formed sides with 3 bends from various thickness (12-20 ga sheet metal). Using fixed rail modules that the stinger is mounted to requires head adjustment for each thickness. The KUKA position feedback auto adjusts as well as torch head angle compensation based on volt/amp/speed variables.
Sorry, that was long - my comment is I never had an opportunity to utilize vision systems due to they were in infancy when I set up cells 15-20 years ago.
The systems today are incredibly fast as proven in the video!
o ya? robots cant do all that huh. what about the one in this guys GARAGE

OK guys.... I'm not getting anything at all.... I just found it motivating... Idk y...
A big "woot" to the marketeers of KUKA and a big "hug" to Timo!
I was expecting a live public match.
Yeah this was highly disappointing.

But does this robot bypass the captcha question tho??
Not this one, but other robots do so very easily

@Pale O'Pterix RIP
These cuts every 3 seconds make me throw up ... would have loved to watch this a bit, but impossible.
People complaining about editing...want raw footage
It is fine considering that its fake
I guess it was a master Thesis for a student to program a table tennis software.
And they probably cut out something mismatches.
A robot of that class easily can do such a performance.

That's like the worst editing ever, just show us proper footage. Nobody wants to see these camera changes literally every 0.5 seconds.
That was the only way for it to work. The robot never actually played against him.
Hey, I spent hours and hours editing it this way, and gosh darn it, you're going to like it!!
yeah with slo mo and awkward angles and speed changes.
music intensifies
Did you make this comment after watching the video?
If so, the video editor won.
JG source ?
I bet there are a few people who actually think this is for real.
Exactly, that's why you don't see any actual game play, just artistic and tricky camera work. If this was legitimate they'd simply show actual game play.
just watch this ua-cam.com/video/-KxjVlaLBmk/v-deo.html robots can do more than you think in less time than you think ;)
it could be real, but the angles and editing won't let you see that.
So, where’s the part where the robot get mad and decided to take over the world after swiftly took him down 🧐
Thats when we get a bunch of wookiees to play so they'll lose and pull the robots arms from their sockets.
keep calm and realize its a cool commercial folks. no more, no less.
The score was 9/11. Kuka did 9/11.

Was ein tolles kraftvolles Video. Bin stolz darauf bei Kuka in Augsburg mein Praktikum gemacht zu haben, allerdings nicht beim Tennis sondern in der IT 🎾 😊👌.
Why am I watching robotics commercials at 1 am?
2 am here 😂
I do not believe that this totally speeded-up, slowed-down, edited-to-death, music-saturated, made-up movie is a true record of what actually happened. Please upload the raw footage and then I may be impressed.
It's called advertisement...
davesplatz
If it is an advertisement then I definitely do not believe it.
lol its not a religion...... but u miss the point ,even if it is not possible yet to perform a real game like this video want to make believe us though it makes one important statement it is just a question of time when this will be reality. This piece of hardware is damn close to natural reaction and agility.
I want one, I don't know why but I want it...
It could make me breakfast, pancakes and beacon mmmmmm
Gotta admit that I was looking forward to an actual competition not an over produced commercial. I guess the technology is just not there yet. That day will come.
Agreed... This was a huge letdown
preston0808 On the other hand, if someone really _had_ spent 5 years teaching an industrial robot to play table tennis, people would be posting about how disappointed they were with the time scientists waste on stupid things, instead of looking for a cure for cancer. :-P
ua-cam.com/video/AxSyXMbV3Yg/v-deo.html
all this editing makes it look staged honestly, got boring after a minute thirty
oh, you think its staged?!? yeah nah its boring youre right
How to maximally reduce the actual information content and real imoression of what happened by contantly changing camera angles snd speeds and never simply showing what happened from a useful perspective at real speed for any useful length of time. Brilliant!
They tried to make it so intense with the music and the diving. Load of crap
You're one of those douche bags that is just impossible to please eh?
Fake or not, I thought it was pretty creative at the very least
Jesus Christ
If they had *just* shown the match without the slo-mo and the rapid-fire editing I'd be interested. But it looks so Hollywood it seems fake. This is like watching NFL Films where the purpose is to overhype some guys rolling around in mud as if it meant something.
You guys (Kuka) listened to your filmmaker instead of your brains. Just let the robot do its thing and record it. If its impressive we'll know.
So someone thought the best way to showcase your robotics technology is to set a fake match between a machine and sports star.
One of the most disappointing marketing campaigns ever.
I can give two thumbs up for the creative person who came up with this idea. It is not a showcase demonstration, it is an ad, a short action movie.
Now it´s 2020 and I start to believe these images...hard to acknowledge this is on UA-cam since 2014
Timo Boll was like "ok I'll do it with one condition, your robot should let me win"
kuka robot confirmed for illegal serves
meme
Nah, it hit the ball up high enough before it served
No
Actually, the rules permit one to throw up the ball with the bat like that if one be one-armed.
There are actually some one-armed, handicapped players that do so; it can also be done if one's other arm be broken and one still elect to play.
😂 😂
While I'm sure you make excellent robot arms, I'm disappointed with the video. I was expecting to see something live, or at least an almost unedited version of the match. This is basically an ad, and you got a ton of people excited for... well, nothing really.
I hope you learn from this, and show us the real deal some day! :)
***** do you have a link to that?
I'm sure of the same thing, it's pre programmed and it looks like it also have some cgi included. It's a shame, really.
eine der besten Werbungen aller Zeiten...vor Allem weil 2 KUKA Roboter meine Kollegen sind...
30 seconds into the actual game play, I was thinking "I bet the comments are going to be savage towards the motion sickness inducing camerawork and cutting" I was not disappointed.
Stop trying to make it some big epic thing and show a normal camera angle where you can see the whole table and show it normal speed, all those cuts and slow mo are annoying as hell.
This just makes it look fake to me more than anything. They wouldn't have to develop a clever ping pong robot for these action film shots.
Nah then we would have realized that the robotic arm actually sucks at playing ping pong, that's why we aren't show AT ANY POINT, the actual rate at which the robot returns the balls. It's just a mere ad for these KUKA guys..... yaaaawn. They truly missed an opportunity to make kind of a bigdog demo.
Wow, what absolute bullshit. Heavily edited, even the ball was fake at times. Jesus Christ.
So? I don't think anyone is supposed to think that the robots really play... :P
Omg you have such hindsight, please teach us master !
FAAAKE
ph0b0rz With advances in robotics, it seems very plausible that a robot could play. They can play chess and Jeopardy and carry military gear up a mountain. The only thing that makes this video interesting is the promise of a real match.
For sure, but soon they will be able to play smoothly. I was working on the same thing, trying to control the KUKA to play table tennis, but a student project is not even close :(
Amazing Robot. Thank U fo videos

commercial or not. tracking a table tennis ball needs complex vision systems...of which i see none. its JUST a commercial...also...props @Dr Shaym
the robot could in theory do this did it actually do it for this comercial no i think it was cgi
Logic Chaser so you say, such commercial robot can track ball movements?
Stop moving the camera I CANT SEE ANYTHING
But shaking the camera and use fast cuts so people can't see shit is the new hype!
For years now, I been fantasizing about how good of a snooker player a robot could be. I bet it wouldn't take too long for that machine to beat a Judd Trump or a Ronnie O'Sullivan.
No emotions to have to overcome, no attitude ajustments... And much easier to achieve than what Big Blue entailed.
The future with these robots is very scary
Is this a ping pong match or an action movie trailer? Judging by the fancy camera work, I'd say the latter.
They overdid BIG TIME with the camera work and editing. So much , it's distracting and you don't get to see how fast the robot arm plays at all. I would have liked to see a wider shot to see how the AI adapted to different shots etc, instead of this fictional "movie-esque" trailer.
It's an ad , not the "duel man vs machine" I was expecting , and I'm sure the machine did suck a lot more than showed in the video.
TrasherBiner that's the thing, it didn't play. it was just an ad to demonstrate how fast and accurate the robot arm can move. it didn't play ping pong at all. there was no sensors to detect the balls position from what I can see.
This would have been a great commercial, if they hadn't lied to us for weeks and weeks about it being a real competition. Pathetic.
Literally 40 seconds in and I am genuinely nauseous from the way this is filmed... I have to stop lol
It's all for show.
Lost interest because of the slow mo slows
The people at KUKA have no integrity for doing this. We were all expecting a live match of man vs. machine and instead we get this overly edited bs with quick cuts used to hide its fakeness. Highly unethical of KUKA.
Dear spiegel, thank you for your feedback. We are sad to see that you did not enjoy our video, which we believe is a nice vision of our product. However, we did not announce a live game and believe that the video was entertaining for both robot and table tennis enthusiasts. Best regards
KukaRobotGroup Of course YOU would believe that it was entertaining for both robot and table tennis enthusiasts - and you are wrong. And please don't count # of times watched as proof you are right. That's just people like me curious to see the actual match - WITHOUT all of the horribly edited quick cuts, slow motion, close ups and sound effects. Just show the darned match! You can see by the approval vs. disapproval rating that it's running 50/50. In a well done marketing campaign the thumbs up should be MUCH higher than the thumbs down.
spiegel "To all laic who watched this video:
A "live" match between a professional vs an industrial machine would riquired a lots of sensors, and a very complicated software to operate. That would be a very difficult thing to do, even if it is not impossible. Who is in the robotics can understand why this is not "live". The video only representsd the movement capability of the robot, what is quite impressive imo.
Stop hating, they have to precisely program EVERY SINGLE MOVEMENT, what is in the vid, and Timo Boll had to aim for that one direction, with a precise timing, to do it right.
Yeah i would fell of my chair if they would made it "live" but that is way too hard to deliver. Maybe a group of scientists could do it with enough resources. One day... :D

Today the human would win some r robots cam self learn but their slow robots today aren't as advance as humans
Marc Arriaga just like cameras can see better than the human eye and have better focus, some robots can be smarter than humans. like the deep blue vs chess grandmaster. a supercomputer defeated the best chess player in the world. so I hate to break it to you. but what u said is false
"Propaganda"? This is not politics! This is an advertisement for robotics.

what is it with everyone now adays who wants everything to be fucking real and if its the sightest bit editing they go on a rampage and yell "fake"!!!!!..dude just take the video for what it is and enjoy it...i don't see you coming out with any mind blowing accomplishing videos...
Michael Madrid why should i enjoy.. its not a movie .. :| when i see something super artificial and video tries hard to convince it's not .. i have every right to point it out ..
Michael Madrid They say its "The unbelievably fast KUKA robot" but make the whole video in slow motion. Get the fuck out of here.
Michael Madrid It's not about its being fake. It's that the camera work is so distracting that we can't even see what's going on with the robot. I have no doubt it was excellent but how can we get a feel of man v. machine when all we see are flashes of movement and slo-mo? The camera work was trying so hard to be flashy, that it made the whole robot questionable.

Well that was the most disappointing thing I've seen in a while. Staged plays, cgi, outrageous jump cuts. We were promised a duel between man and machine, and what we get is a choreographed fake match with no real meaning behind any of it. It doesn't showcase Timo's skill nor the precision/mobility of the KUKA. That was the whole reason for this video and only the tiniest glimpse of those aspects was shown.

@@DasKloputzer xD
In general mathematical applications, the robotic arm cannot be programmed to a fixed and regular movement in advance due to the randomness of the ball movement. Rather, the movement of the robotic arm must be done by an algorithm dedicated to calculating the path and speed of the ball, which enables the processor to accurately calculate the movement of the ball so that the robotic arm on its impact can take the appropriate movement necessary To tackle the ball.
What I want to see is how the robot gets the ball in that little holder it has after each point, lol.
Looks staged -- like a movie match, (im)perfectly scripted.
It would have been nice to see even one game of the set where the camera angle didn't change so we could see what the robot was actually capable of. This series of single hit, perfect camera angle shots show nothing except the script writer's and director's visions of what such a game might turn out like.
Very disappointing.
This is what i was exactly thinking :)
kuka already won your interest with this vid. everyone starts discus about "fake" or animated, etc. best PR
brazzbazz but Kuka haven't impressed me. If I were in the market to purchase one if these robots, I'd now be ignoring Kuka -- this video is them telling me something, but unable to back that up. I'm now looking at their competitors to see what they will offer.
