Hello Nick! I've been watching this tutorial a few times in years past but it keeps on coming very handy as I go on implementing new ideas by means of Inkscape. Thank you very much for your excellent work and the fast and nice way you describe all actions in detail! You made the difference in many works I could perform so far! Thanks again!
Thanks Love your tutorials!!! I need help! How can I move the chrome text around and copy to other projects without lt loosing the effects. The layers separate when I move it
Probably the best chrome effect Inkscape video out there...as stated below, shiny chrome effects may be a bit dated for current logo scene, the techniques you demonstrate can be applied to a variety of other projects. Great video!
This is a great video! I'd love to know how can I edit button of the gradient at 5:23 time frame. I can only duplicate the gradient but not edit so now I'm stuck! Hoping I can hear from you because my deadline is today! haha :D
I can't believe the font I created so easily! Thanks so much! The features were in a few different places from the video but I took my time to figure it out. New subbie!!
Awesome tutorial, tried this in 1.0 today, took me an hour. Had a few issue, some of the same as below. 1. I had to use the "Gradient edit tool (G key)" and the mouse to add stops. 2. When performing path intersection on the red layer (at 9:00), half the red letters disappear. So I just continued with the 3 I had. 3. Could not get the group duplicate to work, it would not Union (at 9:50) the paths together. Not sure what I missed. So I just picked a layer. Thanks for the tip about the Custom view, that should be on by default.
it seems that many objects are still grouped. I had the same problem with the union part and did my research in forums. turns out you just have to ungroup the hell out of it and then union
I think you could use this same technique; just substitute shades of yellow and reddish-brown in place of the white and darker greys in the gradient stops. I'll give that a try myself.
Ah hell guys my inset is doing something weird, takes in far too much distorting the shapes. I worked around this by breaking things apart and scaling them manually but cant seem to find a way to inset/outset more precisely. Would really appreciate some advice as it seems pretty handy to be able to do that.
Great videos they are really appreciated. Perhaps though a better explanation of WHY you are doing what you are doing-- especially when duplicated layers often.
Hey, Nick, I tried doing this with the new Inkscape and It doesn't work every time I go back and four watching the video it deletes the settings and I have to start over.
Nick, thanks for the tutorials. Im having issues to grab my "lower object", on the tutorials that we duplicate, is there any way to do this better? Im a beginner - very 1st stages, im trying corel and inkscape, coz illustrator is a no cant do. Lol In corel we can click, object manager and ALT to lower down and select the object. Also, I cant use my gradient for some reason, its the latest inkscape version. Thank you
Hey nick quick question.....if i were to use this principle on say a circular object, would i still work in a horizontal fashion like you woulo text or would the shading have to follow a circular contour? Great video by the way...
Great tutorial. I made the logo but now Im tryng to put into a modified path perspective and it keeps breaking apart. How did you get them tp stay together? I used group and also used union. But when I put them into my . unique shape they seperate.
This is weird, on Windows I don't have access to the gradient editor. It must be somewhere but I can't find it. Let me know if you know where it is, it would help me a lot! Thanks!
Oh yeah, version 91 has a different gradient interface. It works similarly, but it's placed at the top of the toolbar instead of at the right side toolbar. Sorry about that.
Nick Saporito Not your fault...thank you for the reply. I hate when they move things around. How would you make the background transparent? Thank you for your replies!
Is there a way to add text to other words with the same effect without having to start over from the beginning before converting the text to a path? Thank you
for anyone using Inkscape 0.91 + and cannot figure out how to add stops, it's here on this page appdunno.net/guides/inkscape/multiple-colors-gradient . I couldn't follow along until I figured that out. thanks for the great tutorial!
+Todux I have it because I'm using a dark theme with Ubuntu that makes everything dark by default. If you're using Windows, there's a tutorial for it on UA-cam that someone else created. Simply search "inkscape dark theme windows" and it should be one of the first videos.
They changed the way gradients are edited, but if you go into the preferences and then under the tools menu, the gradient section there has an option to switch the old version back on.
Jesus christ man. I have this slowed down and I'm still rewinding constantly. Most of us have no idea where anything is in the UI. Keep in mind too thetes a good chance were running different versions entirely. So it takes some translating. None of this is being explained either so you aren't exactly getting as much from it as your trying too. Instead it's just an inkscape speed run.

You seem to use such simple techniques here but the outcome is realistic and very effective. Great video!
+Bob Wilkinson Thank you!
Thanks Love your tutorials!!! I need help! How can I move the chrome text around and copy to other projects without lt loosing the effects. The layers separate when I move it

+Bob Blihovde Absolutely. Chrome effects aren't ideal for a logo, but they have their place given the proper context.
This is a great video! I'd love to know how can I edit button of the gradient at 5:23 time frame. I can only duplicate the gradient but not edit so now I'm stuck! Hoping I can hear from you because my deadline is today! haha :D
Awesome tutorial! Reversing the gradient on the stroke is what really sells it!
+Chris Wells Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference in the world.
I can't believe the font I created so easily! Thanks so much! The features were in a few different places from the video but I took my time to figure it out. New subbie!!
Thanks, welcome aboard!

Had the same problems with Version 1.0.1., especially with problem No. 3

I've just used this tutorial and this effect on the main text in my son's birthday card. Looks amazing!
Thank you!
+Nadine White Awesome!
After hitting inset @7:18 my red tex becomes transparent with only one side border showing
HELLO NICK, I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO AND ITS AMAZE ME, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL
Here I was thinking it would be overtly complicated, never even thought of gradients. Genius!
Thank you so much for this video. Would you please make a video on how to create a gold effect on text?
I think you could use this same technique; just substitute shades of yellow and reddish-brown in place of the white and darker greys in the gradient stops. I'll give that a try myself.
He has one video now. You can check-in his channel
Dear Nick, thank you for taking the time and making this video. It has helped. Thank you once again. Cheers!
+Jaidev Shah My pleasure. Thank you, Jaidev.
Wow - Nick really knows his graphics. Great tut!
Ur awesome dude. I appreciate the time u take to make these tutorials. Thanks man
+Edgar Lupercio My pleasure. Thanks for watching
hey mate ! thanks a lot ! unfortunatelly i already knew how to do that, i would have liked something with a texture too, like an used chrome texture

I worked around this by breaking things apart and scaling them manually but cant seem to find a way to inset/outset more precisely. When I went to use Inset, it removed more than half the letters. Ugh! So frustrating. 😒
Great videos they are really appreciated. Perhaps though a better explanation of WHY you are doing what you are doing-- especially when duplicated layers often.
Exactly.
I believe those he does in his course
Hey, Nick, I tried doing this with the new Inkscape and It doesn't work every time I go back and four watching the video it deletes the settings and I have to start over.
Hi Nick,
Great tutorial!
Thank you very much!
One question: How would it be done to be gold color instead of chrome?
Thanks in advance
I went here for just a second and ended up watching the whole video. Inkscape now is more powerful for me.
+Oleg Teplyakov Awesome! More people need to be made aware of Inkscape.
Nick, thanks for the tutorials. Im having issues to grab my "lower object", on the tutorials that we duplicate, is there any way to do this better? I needed to make a logo for a fictitious product in my technology class and this really helped out. Thanks!
+David D. That's awesome, glad to help!

Great video by the way...

HOW DO OYOU ADD GRADIENT STOPS IN THE NEW VERSION 1.1 OF INKSCA[E? CLICKING ON THE LINE DOES NOTHING ANYMORE.
is there a way to put this chrome text around a circle?
Can't use the gradients like you're showing. I guess I have a newer version Inkscape, so now I can't figure out how to do this the way you did it.
hey nick thanks for the videos that helped a lot in learning all needed, can i ask you why we choose 'last selected' in align and distribute section?
This is weird, on Windows I don't have access to the gradient editor. It must be somewhere but I can't find it. Let me know if you know where it is, it would help me a lot! Thanks!
I'm in Inkscape v.0.92
Yeah I think it's because of version 0.92. The gradient editor was better in .48
Had the same issue but I figured it out, with the higher versions, you need to go to the first stop and duplicate that one.
Just press the button beside the plus button on top of the blur meter. then the gradient editor should appear above you. on the tab under file, etc.
Dark Light Vaper UK Thanks. Click on Edit gradient button after that.
Hi Nick! Your work is awesome. Keep doing it! Congratulations from Brazil.
Liégele Cabral Thanks, I appreciate your support!
So I couldn't follow along because I don't the add gradient stop point on my inkscape. I have the most recent version if that matters.
I have the same problem too ... I'm using v0.91 and half the stuff referenced in this video appears to be from an earlier version.
i probablly have a new version but i cant add stops ( 3:00 ) does anyone knows how to?
Ctrl+Alt+Click on the gradient LINE where you want the color to change. Tiny circles should appear on the line once you created a stop.
is possible create a complete alphabet as this and use to write anything? thanks
Are there any filters for this ?
Is there a way to add text to other words with the same effect without having to start over from the beginning before converting the text to a path? Thank you
Hey man why are your colors so vibrant in comparison to mine. Like your red at 50% still looks red. Mine looks faded even at 75% opacity.
I don't have my edit and stop menu in fill and stroke
, what do I do?
Is it possible to curve text to a path once it is "chromed"?
Really helpful, thank you Nick.
Chrome tutorial watched first time in Inkscape.
for anyone using Inkscape 0.91 + and cannot figure out how to add stops, it's here on this page appdunno.net/guides/inkscape/multiple-colors-gradient . I couldn't follow along until I figured that out. thanks for the great tutorial!
+theAbeElement I wish I could somehow pin this comment to the top. Great input, thanks for sharing!
mention him and add it to the description?
I just clicked on that link and it came up with a pop up for a Zeus virus alert. Don't click on this link!
Link is corrupt.
Thanks! Thought I was going crazy!!
hello can help me
I would like to reproduce the effect on two letters of my logo. Can you help me
Man! How do you figure this stuff out!
How do you defined the black skin in the Inkscape? Is the skin of the Ubuntu?
+Todux I have it because I'm using a dark theme with Ubuntu that makes everything dark by default. If you're using Windows, there's a tutorial for it on UA-cam that someone else created. Simply search "inkscape dark theme windows" and it should be one of the first videos.
Fantastic Nick!
+Ronald Wee Thanks!
Very slick!
lmaao where's the edit gradient option? jesuschrist. what version are u using. im confused

How to add stops in d version 92.4, m messed up
You have to select the gradient line from the left corner and draw it all the way to the right corner. Only after that can you click the stop button.
Which is the best version of inkscape to use
HOLY MOTHER OF PAUSE BUTTON.
Very true. But to be fair, I rather press on pause than listen to a presenter drag on....

Amazing
How do you add color?
Tbh, the part with the ellipse kind of messes up the aspect of the text, at least for what I ended up with. Still, very helpful tutorial
So lots and lots of gradients.
Pretty much. It's kind of like an illusion.
2D art: the art of making 2D lines look 3D.
