YES! Thank you for not rambling on and not getting to the point. I watch your videos because they can be short and to the point. I don't have to wade through off topic dribble. I recommend your videos all the time.
@@danielmartin7873 it for the uploader; if the uploader adds you're comment as it now to the description youtube will segment the video properly. so yes very helpful xD
Reverse path reverses the direction of the path. Very useful when placing text on the path. If the path is a circle, reverse path will take the text from the outside of the circle to the inside.
No only that, but it has an important effect on how fills happen in combined paths. For instance, a text "O" is created with two circles which are combined, one inside the other, with opposite path directions - therefore the fill occurs between the two circles, thereby creating the glyph "O".
Hey Nick. Thank you very very much for your channel. Your videos have been worth their weight in gold (so to speak) for my Inkscape education. At first I hated Inkscape. It was so different from Gimp and I didn't get it. With your help I now love and use Inkscape all the time. You are very easy to listen to and do a great job of explaining everything step by step. This new series is an awesome idea. You're a pro! Keep up the great work.
***** grouping just groups the selected objects. Any changes you make affect all of those grouped objects. The union function unites two or more objects into one object. The color will be the same, etc. In a group the objects are still individual objects. As for the setup, Inkscape can be configured and move things around. Honestly I get a little confused on changing the setup. Maybe Nick can shed a little more light on that subject.
Dear Nick. Thank you. A thousand times. This is how I learn best, by listening and trying. I find the speed and detail of your explanations exactly matches my own needs. Other tutorials are too slow or too fast, or miss things out. I find you spot on. As I get better I find I can follow you in real time without pausing the video. Everything I can do on inkscape, you taught me. Thank you.
I've worked with Inkscape for close to 7yrs now but the things I've learnt from Nick for the last couple months outweigh those i learnt in the past 7yrs.
This is amazing. I can't believe so few people are willing to break down each menu command in other tutorials. It's so simple an idea, but it seems it's so rarely implemented! Thanks Nick!!
Yeah, Nick is amazing. He even offers paid books at just $9 dollars!! I wonder how good his paid Courses are, with his basics and free stuff being pure Gold.
It is so nice to get clarity on this stuff. You are just amazing Nick! Thank you so much. Everything the Karl said in the comment below is exactly how I feel! So refreshing!
This may be a little dated Nick but you are THE BEST. Thanks for all you've given. I actually had a piece purchased. Not logo but art and it's all thanks to you.
just got inkscape a week ago, didn't realize how good a free vector program could be. just getting back into things after years and your channels making things go much faster. Thank you sir
I always feel discomfort when I see a video this helpful and realize it was posted so long ago 😅 feel like I've been missing out so much ! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge this is very good content !
I was so frustrated the other day as I tried to make a logo in inkscape. I have only used illustrator before and it's been a while. But after watching this video I feel confident that I can learn it and make what I want. This video was so informative! Thank you!
Just started using Inkscape as a total beginner to this kind of thing. Not sure what I love more about these tutorials, the quality of the content or that I feel like I'm being taught by Batman (Christian Bale). Great content, many thanks Batman.
Nick, The Cut Paths function affects the perimeter of shapes instead of the enclosed areas. Cut Path uses the line on top (it doesn't need to be closed) to cut the line enclosing the area on bottom. The points of intersection become two nodes each -- one for each new path. Since the bottom path was cut, it is no longer closed. In fact, it will also cut open paths in the same fashion.
Nick I love your videos. You are quick, concise and to the point with no dilly dally. After messing with open source software like GIMP after Photoshop I was completely put off and didn't even want to try Inkscape fearing a similar experience. Your videos and the Inkscape developers are like a one / two punch. The developers actually made great software and your videos are the perfect tutorials for an easy to use, well thought out, intuitive software UI.
This was a very useful video. I have a much better understanding on what some of these things do. To help you a little, the "combine" is useful when creating "satin stitch" paths for use with the "Inkstitch" extension - reverse path is also used when making the satin stitch path
I don't actually know what cut path does but what it looks like is that it took an intersecting line from the two nodes which were at the corners of the intersection between the two objects and made an object out of it. Awesome videos!
Your videos on Inkscape are so helpful! Thank you so much for making them! Just knowing that I need to hold down shift instead of control to select more than one thing has helped so much. The project I'm working on is looking so much more concise thanks to these tutorials.
I have stumbled across you page, and am know a subscriber. I have always wanted to do my own graphics and i think i can now. You are a great teacher and these videos are a real blessing. Thank you
Thank you Nick. I've learned more from one of your videos than I could've learned spending days if not weeks with the tool. I've been using Gimp for years and have the need to create vector rather than raster logos and only recently discovered that Inkscape is the right tool for doing that. I suspect there will be a learning curve going from Gimp to Inkscape but luckily, I discovered your channel here that explains much of what I'm looking for. Again, thank you!
Thank you Nick! I'm just starting out and was confused watching some of your tutorials because I hadn't learn what each function did and why it did it. This video was super helpful explaining the basics so it'll be way easy for me to follow along now! Thank youuuu again!
definitely great video ... these basics are foundation stones of any software (or science, or anything) and I'm glad that somebody explaines Inkscape this way. Yes there are many tutorials, but those are only combination of the things explained here and create bounds to creativity
Nick, this is what I have been hoping you would do and I just found them today. You build wonderful and creative tutorials but sometimes I get left in the dust as you move on to the next step. The "Inkscape Explained" series will help me a lot since I am new to Inkscape, but loving it! THANKS!
Just found this video. I am new to Inkscape and found Logos by Nick to be amazing. I look forward to seeing what else you have up your sleeve. Thank you for making this
wow that was so clear and easy to understand. I've been trying to understand Inkscape recently and these videos have be so helpful! I was trying to separate my paths and couldn't figure it out but then I hear you say to use Break Apart and sure enough that worked! Thank you so much!

Great video. Thank you for your clear explanation on how Path work. Old guy like me didn't feel to learn new stuff. You really bring my interest back to Inscape that I installed in my PC long time but I seldom use it. I used to work on Freehand MX and love its simplicity. Time for the switch.
I am just starting to learn to use Inkscape to create designs for our Twitch channel, and this video has me so excited to get to work! Well done, very helpful.
From the help menu: Path → Reverse (Shift+R) (keyboard shortcut only works with Node Tool): Reverse path: Reversing the direction of a path will affect things like the order in which nodes are selected by Tab and in the direction of Markers (e.g., arrows). Your speed while explaining things is perfect! I usually lose patience while watching a video because it's too slow for me! But not with you! Continue your good work. I subscribed!
Very nice tutorial, thank you very much ! I think is worth mentioning that you can break apart overlapping sub-objects if your object was created using combine (in your example you cannot separate the two overlapping circles because you've used union)
This was super helpful. I came here to learn about one specific function, but learned a bunch of other stuff, too. I knew what Path > Difference did, but I didn't know how to specify which object was cutting a piece out of which (it'd always worked out the way I wanted it to).

Reverse path reverses the direction of the path. Very useful when placing text on the path. If the path is a circle, reverse path will take the text from the outside of the circle to the inside.
To clarify for juniors like me- first you need to go to: TEXT -> PUT ON PATH and then you can do PATH -> REVERSE.
Also, before that, gotta convert the circle or square that you draw into a path using Path>Object to Path (for the Reverse thing to work)
No only that, but it has an important effect on how fills happen in combined paths. For instance, a text "O" is created with two circles which are combined, one inside the other, with opposite path directions - therefore the fill occurs between the two circles, thereby creating the glyph "O".
Even more important if you are using Inkscape to control a cnc machine of any kind. Path direction matters a lot in this case.
"Cut path" cuts the underlying path at the points where the two paths intersects. Try it with border only figures instead of solid colors.
This may be a 4 year old video but I learned so much in a few minutes. Thank you so much for your time & effort in making this video!
