Every time I listen to a Bach concerto (admittedly, very infrequently) I have to smile at the bouncy harpsichord just happily doing its thing underneath all the more featured instruments. My mind has made in inextricable connection between the harpsichord and Bach, for whatever reason.
This music somehow manages to affect me in the most simple yet potent way. After listening to it this morning I couldn’t help but grin and whistle it to myself as I walked down the street. This piece didn’t crash over me in great waves of emotion like his passions did, but their respective roles are equally important. I am very grateful for this music that reminds me of all the beauty in those simple moments.
Emma Black is so brilliant in this performance.. beautiful tonality, and expressive delivery of every line, flowing an d blending perfectly with others.. goosebumps! ;)
Woooaaa !👏
It has been more than 40 years since I heard this Siciliano for the first time. I was living in Belgium, and a light snow was falling. It was the perfect aural landscape. On hearing this magical sound, one is frozen in time, with no desire to return to the madness of daily life. I am so grateful for this splendid performance by Emma Black and the Netherlands Bach Society.
That Siciliano is so much like the passion rhythms - and the finale is so much like the Brandenburg spirit - he took the forms and turned them around into so many moods.
I recognize this concerto, but I heard it for the first time on a record I just bought in July, 1967 in Minnesota. The arrangement then was in E major for harpsichord, and was performed by Suzanna Ruzikova. Either way it is magnificent! Bach will always live through his music.
She does a very nice job holding it down. This is not an easy piece to play. She balances out ornamentation very well. Not too flashy, not too "style rustico". I noted that she had that quiet moment after ending her solo in the Siciliano that some of us get when we play Bach music. The man had the uncanny ability to reach into your head. Doing so while playing is more profound. The whole group plays well, in a balanced and mature way.

I just came across this tonight and now I am sitting here, spellbound. What a playing! And I swear, I have never heard this Oboe Concerto before. Thank you, Netherlands Bach Society!
But when I read the introduction this is a reconstruction of an oboe consert, based on a keyboard concerto in E major. Not so strange that I never heard this before. Anyway, this is beautiful music!
I assume the public were ecstatic, but I wish they had held for two seconds before clapping, to allow the full roundness of the sound to sink in. What a splendid performance. Oh and NBS already did 1055 in harpsichord, but it's glorious in oboe d'amore! One day maybe
Stunning. All of you at the Netherlands Bach Society are to be commended. I have never heard Bach played better, everything you have done is of superior quality.
A few notes about this concert BWV 1053 All three movements of this concerto exist in parallel versions in two cantatas, BWV 169 (in D major and B minor) and BWV 49 (in E major), which were first performed within two weeks of each other ir 1726.In the cantatas, the solo instrument was the organ, with a range of f#°-c#3 But if two low passages are excepted that were not probably part of the original concerto, the range becomes, bo-c#3. This is exactly a semitone lower than the standard range of the hautboy. The solo line also allows places to breathe. Several writers have therefore suggested that this concerto was originally conceived for hautboy a semitone higher, in E flat major. Rifkin reconstructed the piece for hautboy in E flat and recorded it in May 1983 with Stephen Hammer playing the solo. On the basis of copying mistakes in the original parts, Rifkin's argument for E flat is convincing. Still, if an hautboy was the original solo instrument, it seems unlikely that the piece was originally conceived in this key because (with the exception of the second movement, which fits the hautboy well in C minor) it is so awkward and difficult. E flat is a semitone removed from the hautboy's primary scale of D major, with all that that entails in the way of cross-fingerings, etc. It is a particularly challenging key on a technical revel, notably because of the presence of Ab, produced by half-closing hole 3. It was no doubt because of its technical problems that E flat major was rarely used for hautboy solos in the eighteenth century. Bach used it in less than 3 per cent of his hautboy solos, and-when he did, as in BWV 187/5, he exploited the key's unusual characteristics. In this concerto, however, E flat acts merely to create obstacles. It is difficult to see why Bach would have chosen this key when he originally conceived the piece. On the other hand, there is a key that works well: F major, a step higher. In F, with two more natural fingerings per octave, the piece is freer in sound, and the difficulties caused by the presence of Ebs and Abs are eliminated. But there is a further twist. The solo line sounds as good or better on an hautbois d'amour as on the treble hautboy. And when the hautbois d'amour plays in fingered F/D minor/F, it sounds in D/B minor/D, which are the keys of two of the three movements in the cantata versions. It is probably not a coincidence that the two fast movements in the cantata versions have prominent parts for hautbois d'amour. From the beginning of the piece, the first violin's arpeggiated introductory figure sounds better (of course) in D than E flat. In both extant versions (the concerto and the cantata), the last movement is in E. If it is transposed down a step to D, there is a passage in the violin parts that extends below the bottom note of the violin. But this passage succeeds equally well an octave higher; Bach had to keep it low in the organ version because an hautbois d'amour doubled the first violin, and would otherwise have ascended to fingered f3, beyond the instrument's range. In the harpsichord concerto, without the con- straint of the doubling wind part, Bach rewrote this section in a lighter, airier manner, but understandably kept the strings in the lower octave in order not to cover the harpsichord (a consideration that was not necessary for an hautbois d'amour soloist). In fingered F, there is one note in the organ version that exceeds the hautbois d'amour's normal upper range. The analogous measure in the harpsichord concerto takes this note down an octave, along with the first notes of the first and second beats. This is a curious anomaly; on a harpsichord, there is no physical or musical reason to have gone down an octave at this point. The answer is probably that the part was copied from an original for hautbois d'amour, where the octave break was necessary. Bars 13-14, 23-4, and 66-7 in the first movement contain some independent (though unimportant) writing for winds that Bach probably added when arranging the movement for the cantata.
Wonderful contribution, thank you! In one of his essays, GB Shaw commented favorably on the Oboe d’Amor, and suggested it should replace the oboe on a general basis. Having heard each, I like each but certainly understand why Shaw liked the Oboe D’Amor so much.
Oboists however did very well out of Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin, one of the most beautiful of all concertos in the classical repertory, with an adagio second movement that can just about break one's heart.

d'amour doubled the first violin, and would otherwise have ascended to fingered f3, beyond the instrument's range. In the harpsichord concerto, without the con- straint of the doubling wind part, Bach rewrote this section in a lighter, airier manner, but understandably kept the strings in the lower octave in order not to cover the harpsichord (a consideration that was not necessary for an hautbois d'amour
soloist).
In fingered F, there is one note in the organ version that exceeds the hautbois d'amour's normal upper range. The analogous measure in the harpsichord concerto takes this note down an octave, along with the first notes of the first and second beats. This is a curious anomaly; on a harpsichord, there is no physical or musical
reason to have gone down an octave at this point.
This comment make my day
Thank-you so much for taking the time to make this detailed overview of the key intricacies of this piece - most interesting!
@@ALPalmos thanks, unscribe at my channel please!
Beautiful! The clear voice of the oboe emphasises some lovely phrasing that the keyboard version tends to obscure.

Oboists however did very well out of Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin, one of the most beautiful of all concertos in the classical repertory, with an adagio second movement that can just about break one's heart.
bach's writing for oboe is my favorite of his. found mostly in the cantatas and the orchestral suites
at times where good music and good conversation are hard to find this is just refreshing ... Congratulations!!
Thrilling oboe playing. What an inspiration!
What a gift to mankind. Thank you so much for sharing
Brava Maestra Black. Beautiful playing! Terrific performance!
That level of musicality is the best accomplishment anyone can do in life.
It's great to have ensembles like the NBS with such a robust online presence. Helping more people find comfort in Bach's music every day.
I absolutely love this music, the oboe's sweet tune makes me happy, thanks Bacherenigning!
I don't know which tugs at me more: The exquisite tone of the Baroque oboe, or the way in which each phrase Bach wrote comes to a resolution.
So I'll settle for both, and thanks to NBS for allowing me to experience both in this lovely small-ensemble version!
Oboe barroco ; que belleza !! Gracias a Netherlands Bach Society !
Lovely performance with outstanding Australian soloist Emma Black. Congratulations Emma!
I've never seen an oboe like this before. I think the instrument stayed with your youth. It's amazing. From S.Korea.
I felt cozy listening to this spectacular performance
Bach's works are an integral part of my life
There is something extraordinary in their splendid performances

I enjoy this interpretation of Emma Black and the baroque orchestra. Congratulations to the Netherlands Bach Society once again! ❤️🎵👏
Utterly Beautiful... Thank you so much Netherlands Bach Society!
NBS - superb as always. Thank you from Ireland.
Ethereal...soothing....in this crazy covid world, we need this music and the NBS so badly! Thanks so much for providing this moment of sanity.
Fantastic! This is my favourite Bach concerto. Well done Nederlanders 👍🏼👍🏼
The siciliano is so sad. After only a few bars you can feel your heart being almost literally gripped and clutched. The music immediately takes me to Bach's Golgotha.
Even considering that my own musical abilities are beneath humble, I still feel that I am a part of the Netherlands Bach Society. The music, the cinematography-which Rembrandt would have admired, and all of the elegant, attractive players make this channel my absolute favorite.
Gracias de mi rinconcito en España.
Emma is amazing! What a beautiful Oboe, and sound! Doesn't she ever breathe?! Ha ha! Thank you for such beautiful music, so much character, and a joy to listen to!
Always a pleasure hearing this wonderful ensamble before bed time so relaxing 🤔💯🙏
Me too.
The NBS is one of my favorite groups. Bach, and amazing musicians. I recently started listening to the Baroque Oboe. It has such a richer sound than a typical oboe. This remake of a keyboard piece is so beautiful words can't give it justice. Anazing work!
What a breath of fresh air. Thank you and Bravi tutti.
I had the great pleasure recently of hearing Emma Black and Shunske Sato at a performance in Sydney with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.
MERCI GRAND HOMME C’ESTUN VRAI RÉGAL ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love the 2nd and 3rd movements so much!! Can’t count how many times I was amazed by how powerful music is while watching videos from this channel. Thanks to Bach and thanks to Netherland Bach Society 🙌
Yes. I agree. The first moment had a lot of balance problems. Also the soloist did not project some/one of the low register passages in the 1st movement.
The Oboe sounds soooooo good with that orchestra. The entire ensemble is to be applauded.
Absolutely wonderful oboe concert
Thanks NBS🍃
How beautifully the violin comes in at 05:29.
What a clear intro! It's attract me instantly. I wanna click the like button many times 👏👏👏
So beautiful, so divine the sweet sound of Oboe, and when it is a work of Bach it becomes even more sublime. Thank you so much for always warming my soul!
Brilliant! I like Bach music especially performed by NBS and Oboe sounds like a sound of Heaven. Appreciate healing...
Wonderful mastery of the baroque oboe.
Good morning all! I just came across the NBS while doing an internet search for Vivaldi Spring. As Spring 2021 is one month from today, I was hopeful, and Vivaldi popped into my head. Just listened to NBS interpretation of Vivaldi's Spring and Summer, and was blown away! Thank you NBS! So glad I found you.
Bach ha voluto rendere omaggio a Vivaldi in diversi brani ed occasioni ;in quel tempo Vivaldi era gia' famoso in tutta Europa essendo ancora in vita.OK? Alfonso Ferraro.
Always here to hear (and see) beautiful music.
Thank you NBS for such true beauty.🎶❤️
That black double bass is a beauty.
The original performance standards bring out more of the power of this concerto than earlier recordings. Keep up all of your wonderful work guys!
Woawers, she is incredible! Excellent orchestra too
This piece of beauty is a joy forever!
THIS TOTALLY NATURALLY WOOD INSTRUMENT SOUNDS MAGNIFICENT.
Bach is a good match for the oboe
The comfort of Bach’s oboe is beyond compare
What magnificent playing. The NBS is someone whos on my Bucket List to see live. Much like the Beethoven 9 is also one that needs to be seen live
awesome;ua-cam.com/video/KD1bQeeEo9M/v-deo.html
I sincerely hope that when things open up, people get out to concerts of superior live music! “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” (Joni Mitchell). My dream is that there will be a cork pulled out of the bottle and the music flows forth and the audience laps it up!
Beethoven 9 - yes! I must add that one of my all-time favorites was Holst - The Planets in concert. I was a wreck after the end of that as the backstage doors closed and the sound of the female choir trailed off into the stars.
Captivating! their control of melodic lines is just amazing.
