Gray whales surprise kayaker & some tips to see them from shore

  • Point Dume in Malibu is one of the best land based whale watching experiences in the world. In this video, I share some of my most recent clips, some of my favorite clips from the last couple years, facts about gray whales, when to see them, and an encounter with a kayak.
I also share footage of an entangled gray whale that unfortunately died days later. After contacting a NOAA entanglement team, the whale was freed, but died shortly after unfortunately.

Yes, I did contact NOAA about the entangled whale. They had searched for it for a week prior while it was further south and eventually lost track of it before it reappeared in Malibu. Using my data, visual footage, and the help of other spotting volunteers, they were able to set up a rescue. Two days later the whale was freed but the whale died shortly after unfortunately.

    • @chicoktc

@@overworkedkitten4399 probably exhaustion. Who knows how long it had been dragging that net? He also mentioned they won't eat until they reach the arctic, so energy level on that poor whale was probably waaay down. A slow, exhausting death. Poor thing

@@billyguyjoe1858 Depends of what fish it is, whether it is farmed or wild caught.
I love eating farmed fish or fish that are considered an invasive species because you are helping the environment and making it safe for the wild populations of fish. Wild caught like trawlers can damage ecosystems and populations of threatened or endangered species(whales often get caught up in trawler nets and lines which is a huge problem).

This was heartfelt. I'll never forget one of my earlier visits to Point Dume back in the mid 2000s. I went to go clear my head on a Friday morning around 10 am (in March or April I believe). I parked and took the short hike up to the Point Dume cliff overlooking the rocks. You see it from the footage at around 0:16. That day I had a heavy burden on the heart that was seriously weighing me down. I went to try to find some peace and perspective. Sitting and staring at the beauty of the ocean usually helps but I just couldn't think straight. About 30 minutes in, I remember seeing a large set of bubbles coming up to the surface of the ocean water just in front of the rocks. I couldn't see what it was but figured it was some animal below. I think about 15 minutes went by as I continued to see the air bubbles then suddenly two whales breached. It was an adult and a calf! For the next 45 minutes, they proceeded to hang out that very spot to scratch the barnacles off their back. It was a graceful sight to see. (At the time, I thought they were humpback whales. I still think they were given what I know but maybe they were gray whales). That morning I was reminded of this quote... “Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where others see nothing.” - Camille Pissaro. In that moment, I saw something unexpectedly rare and beautiful. It made me look at my own situation much differently. Sometimes the right perspective can change how one views and peseveveres through tough times. That moment definitely helped me. It's something I'll never forget. Thanks for posting this video, TheMalibuArtist. Thank you indeed.

Years ago, on a boat, a Minke whale and her calf swam up , turned to the side to get a very close up look at us. Then a Finback joined them- same thing, up next to the very side of the boat, rolling over and staring me STRAIGHT in the eyes, they hung around for about a half hour. Truly one of the most exciting days of my life.

Great video. Thanks. Weird thought from me, I'm up late and tired. But could we not perhaps find a way to create some sort of machine, platform, or some contraption that could remove barnacles from whales, and make it in such a way that they would learn to use it? I'm sure it would be very difficult, but whales do learn as we know. We just need to get that first whale to use it. But what would 'it' look like? Rollers? With a texture like sand, but located in deeper water? Yeah, I'm up late... but I wonder if anyone thinks of these things - except maybe for marine biologists, oceanographers and marine science people. We have a lot of talent out there.
