You have to understand this wasn't just a song about one man's frustration and desperation about his own situation. This was a reflection of what was going on in the entire nation. The late 70's and early 80's were a time of tremendous economic turmoil and uncertainty; sky high inflation, layoffs/unemployment, plant closures and interest rates approaching 20%. Things were really rough for a lot of folks. This masterwork by Tommy Shaw was like an anthem for this troubled time.
@ted ritola you must have been very young not to notice. It was everywhere and very difficult not to see. Also if it was your first job you probably didn’t have a mortgage, a family, and other commitments. I was only 12 in ‘78 and had a paper route and mowed neighbors yards and I could definitely see it everywhere. It started getting better in 1981.
It very much parallels where we are today. Back then, Japan was the economic threat that was killing our industries. Now it's China. There is one major difference though. The 70's and 80's songs still rock. '10s songs, not so much.
Yes sir. 70's & early 80's was lean on jobs and heavy on high interest loans. High gas prices started then too. Min wage when I got out of HS in 81 was $3:35, gas was about $1:50 per gallon.

@ted ritola I was lucky. I was in college and my dad had a great job.
Facts! Ironically enough I Found out about Styx when I saw Billy Madison in the theater. lol I looked at my mom and was like that song is cool whose that!?
Tommy Shaw wrote and sang this with heart, and the guitar solo's were him as well. He jumps right into those with everything without dropping a beat. Fantastic when done live.
I remember that recession.... It was brutal.... No internet to search for jobs.... No emails to send resumes... Lots of standing in long lines to apply for jobs...
My daughter, who graduated from high school a few years ago, had me play this song before I dropped her off at EVERY softball game. She was a pitcher and catcher (who ultimately went on to play college ball) and needed this song for inspiration. Love how the younger generation can totally get into the old-school tunes. Keep rocking, buddy!
I'm a 37 yr old cook in a dining hall at a private college and I have a lot of conversations with the students. I'll recommend songs or movies sometimes. I call it homework lol
I was the same way as a swimmer through college and beyond, but with Renegade. I had to listen to it behind the blocks for races at major meets. got my blood PUMPING. there’s nothing like the driving beats and guitar in Styx songs!
This song is soo meaningful to me because of the story behind it that my Mother once told me. She had said that when she was looking for a job to support "us" She would play this song and pray to GOD "+" so that she would be able to afford to support our lives without any outside help/Welfare/my Grandparents. I was only 4 when she finally landed her "Permanent" Job as an electro-chip tester. The sad part but also a happy one depending on how you look at it, My Mother was there from when she applied in 1979 till her passing in 2019 at the age of 60. i am 45 now but i will ALWAYS remember that story.. and Keep the Faith should I need just like Moms. My heart aches for you. There's no loss like that. She was still so young. She sounds a lot like my Mom. And you sound like someone who was beautifully raised. May God comfort & bless you. You'll be in my prayers.

I hate to say it, but I agree. So much accomplished before; so much potential after. What they did do though is so good it's crazy and so relevant. For me, everything before "Paradise Theater". Yes, 'Cornerstone' was still them at their best, in my opinion.
I still think the opening and closing few tracks of the Paradise Theater album were good. Love me some Half-Penny, Two-Penny, but the middle of the album is a bit weak.
I don't know what it is but I've heard this song probably over a thousand times but hearing it now and with your reaction it seems a lot more powerful a lot more newer if you get my meaning, it's the Jamel Magic.
Styx Are Awesome. One of my favorite late 70's bands. Rush, Queen, Styx, the Police, Steely Dan, and so many, many more. The late 70's were so fantastic!
In one of the live shows, Tommy Shaw says that it their biggest hit world wide. Something about how when translated into different languages it sounds like it could be their own kind of cultural folk song in most any country. 🤘🏻
This album was HUGE when first released. My best friend's brother played it on an 8 track when taking us to school in his 1979 "Smokey & The Bandit" red Trans Am. The front passenger seat floor board was 18" deep with 8 track cassettes.
I saw them play with their original members back in October 1983---Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw on lead vocals, JY Young shredding on the guitar with Tommy Shaw, and the Panozzo brothers on bass and drums were in-cred-ible.
Well, this is new! You're introducing me to Styx. I think I've only ever heard Babe, which is a great song, but I never knew they got down like this. Whoa! Excuse me, I've got a bunny hole to jump into. Thanks Jamel.
Tommy Shaw, a good old Alabama man, saw so many lose their jobs when the textile mills closed across central Alabama in the 70s. We all saw and lived it down here.
@@richardmarsh9257 I still remember the hell hole that Detroit became. it was so bad Detroit never really recovered. A man could get a job that would allow him to support his family, and move the next generation up, whether it meant kids working for the big 3 or a tier one supplier, or moving them into college. Job security disappeared, pensions gone, and a lot of broken promises. At this time, being a man was measured by his ability to handle responsibility. Their live shows will leave you with a happy positive vibe in your heart. The energy they STILL put into their performances, at their age, is so uplifting. And, I have seen them 9x and would go again tomorrow.
Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw do the bulk of the vocals. Occasionally, James Young does vocals. I would love to hear you react to one of the tracks he sings on. “Miss America”, “Midnight Ride” and “Snowblind” would be good choices. Edit: “Snowblind” has half of the lyrics sung by James Young and half by Tommy Shaw.

LOVED this group when I was a teenager!! I saw them at least 10 times in 7 years. Once during the peak of their popularity I caught them 3 times in 5 days!! Closest I have ever come to being a groupie!!
Jamel, What a nice surprise! Glad to see and hear your response to Blue Collar Man. When I live in Michigan in the 70’s I had a friend named Pete who had a 4 wheel drive truck like that he liked to take off road and I had a Blazer with 48” tires, a lift kit and expanded wheel wells and we’d take friends out for unforgettable teeth rattling rides. He got laid off from the job he loved, working for the railroad and suddenly found himself standing in the unemployment line. It inspired me tow write the song. Thanks for spin! Rock on my friend!!! Your new fan, Tommy Shaw
Our super exciting music. This band, the lead singer and guitar player goes out in the audience for up close to everybody. He had a wireless guitar before it was popularized. He started that back in the 70s. We just fed off the energy of our music to feel alive. That was our music, energy
I was a huuuge Styx fan in high school. I've moved on to other bands since then but it was fun to come back to this track and hear your thoughts. I wanna hear you check out Set My Soul On Fire by Diamond Head
I haven’t watched you in a while but this came up in my subscription feed. This came out when I was 7. I have a very strong memory of my brother catching me dancing with headphones pretending I was Styx. Thanks for the positive reaction. Glad to see it still hold up. I appreciate you.
@@jmfloyd23 I think it was the "Behind the Music" special on Styx, Tommy Shaw was talking about "Babe" when Dennis came up with it. He said, "our fans are expecting hard rock, and we're gonna sing the opera thing, we might not get out alive. I started self-medicating". LOL!
I am so glad that I grew up listening to this music, this album.... I still at age 63 still have the original vinyl. Stxx was such a relevant force . 70s rock will always be timeless
Ok Jamal. While you’re on the Styx kick you MUST listen to “Suite Madam Blue” which is a song written about America back around the bicentennial. It’s meaningful and a great tune. PLEASE listen for us ☺️
Tommy Shaw is the man and sounds just like this today. Some fantastic harmonies when he sang with Blades and Nugent in Damn Yankees. Worth checking out.
Styx "man in the wilderness''. "Castle walls", "Miss America' I saw an interview with Tommy Shaw and he spoke of the days when they fronted before Kansas. he'd watch Kansas and listen to their songs/stories, and it took him to another world/level of song writing.

This has always been one of my favorite Styx songs, and I loved your interpretation of it. Thanks!
Been binge watching your videos good stuff 👍
Suite Madame Blue the live version from 1996 I believe. Fitting song for these times.
Yeah, Snowblind. Love that one.
Jamel... you are such a breath of fresh air. I hope the unboxings have given you perspective on how much we love and appreciate you during this time. That said.. it’s fair to say that your reactions have been pretty male centric. Do me a solid and review I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt. I don’t think you’ll regret it ❤️
I love Styx
LOVED this group when I was a teenager!! I saw them at least 10 times in 7 years. Once during the peak of their popularity I caught them 3 times in 5 days!! Closest I have ever come to being a groupie!!
Jamel: Now go look at the lyrics to Rush, Working Man, and compare them to this.
Working man is an awesome song. !!!! Have that cd in my car 🤗🤗🤗
Probably my favourite Rush song for sure
Also try Working Class man by Jimmy Barnes / Cold Chisel ua-cam.com/video/erSJGrpfnOI/v-deo.html
And John Lennon's Working Class Hero
@@alrivers2297 That's another good song for the working people of the world.
Your new fan,
Tommy Shaw
Tommy Shaw performed this song on Live From Daryl's House
Gotta look for that, cool. Thanks!
So cool! Lovely person 💖
Anything Tommy writes is at his best.
He's STYX 's ace in the whole for 44 years.
Awesome!
God blessed Tommy Shaw. Dig ALL his songs.
I haven’t watched you in a while but this came up in my subscription feed. This came out when I was 7. I have a very strong memory of my brother catching me dancing with headphones pretending I was Styx.
Thanks for the positive reaction. Glad to see it still hold up.
I appreciate you.
Mr Roboto, Don’t Let it End & Lady!!!
Lady a must as the other suggestions 💗
Don’t forget about Babe one of their best!
LOL!
Nooooo not Mr. Roboto! Compared to Blue Collar Man and Renegade, it becomes very clear of the reason Styx died.
I am so glad that I grew up listening to this music, this album....
I still at age 63 still have the original vinyl.
Stxx was such a relevant force .
70s rock will always be timeless
A couple more off the Grand Illusion album to listen to, A man in the wilderness and Castle walls.
Yes! My two faves off an album chock full of excellent songs.
Love that one.
More from my favorite lyricist, Tommy Shaw.
He always writes songs people can relate to in some fashion.
And he's very versatile...
Ok Jamal. While you’re on the Styx kick you MUST listen to “Suite Madam Blue” which is a song written about America back around the bicentennial. It’s meaningful and a great tune. PLEASE listen for us ☺️
Brings back many of memories! Love this song!
James Young...Great guitar player...
Great anecdote.
Funny how things change--I saw Styx in 1990. The opening band? Kansas.
@@pacard33 lol
Yes Kansas music inspired him to write " Man In The Wilderness " Great song
@@pacard33 there's probably a River Styx in Kansas, right? :)
One of my favorite Styx songs. Love the message 💕
I'd forgotten how much I liked Styx before Mr. Roboto - don't even worry about that Roboto era jamel lol 🙏
Agreed the mr roboto stuff signaled the end of quality music from them
I love old Styx but I gotta admit I like Mr. Roboto too
Yes, please skip Mr Roboto
So glad you’ve discovered Styx. Such amazing songs by this band. 💕💕
Styx "Miss America".... No one else has done it yet....
I've been asking for "MA", for a couple years now. So far, no one will touch it. I've also been mentioning *"Snowblind."*
Best of times and rockin the paradise by Styx. You'll love bot
Styx is a great band. You really need to listen to Crystal Ball or Suite Madame Blue. Awesome songs
Right on Alan...
The drummer really rocked this song! Threw in allot of elements, riding the bell on the cymbal cut above the other instruments clearly.
And the spin off group without Dennis...."The Damn Yankees"
I love your room man. This song helped me when I transitioned from the military to the civilian world. Totally true.
TOMMY SHAW
I love your interpretation of the lyrics!!! The music rocks, and the lyrics hit home!
This “blue collar man” approves!
Your reaction's brings tears to my eyes. The same way i felt hearing this song for the first time. Keep getting back up when life knocks you down, again and again.
Yeah the first time I heard this was 6 years ago and I saw a live version on UA-cam. Man it knocked me off my feet right away and I never forgot it.
Check out Castle Walls or Man in the Wilderness.
Castle Walls, great under-rated song!
