Please can I ask that when you recommend cotton buds/q-tips (whatever you want to call them) and things like this that are used and then thrown away, could you please, please stress the importance of choosing biodegradable/eco-friendly versions of them instead of the cheap, plastic versions. It does mean spending a tiny bit more money but it also stops a lot of damage to our environment. Cotton buds can be found really cheap/easily that are made from bamboo and recyclable (you can even buy in larger amounts if you use them a lot). Other eco-friendly art swaps are things like using an old duster cloth/tshirt/pillowcase etc that would be thrown away instead of paper towels when painting or using a liquid blending medium with coloured pencils. If you don't have anything like that when you next paint you can buy a cheap pack of 3 or 4 dishcloths to use. When it is too dirty to use anymore simply chuck it in the wash with your regular laundry and use the next one while it dries. Those with kids who know how fast they grow out of their clothes, if they don't have younger siblings or your friends/family don't have kids you can pass the old clothes onto these make excellent rags for painting and you can even sew a bunch together and use a waterproof spray on them to make a protective cover for your workspace. There are many things we can do to reduce the impact of our passion for art on the environment (that would also make a great video idea too!) and I am always looking for new ones so please feel free to post your eco-friendly art swaps below! 😊🌍💚💙🌍
FANTASTIC comment, I'm pinning this to give it as much visibility as possible. Most EU countries banned single-use plastics on q-tips/cotton buds a couple of years ago along with plastic straws, cutlery etc. but I totally agree there is so much more that can be done and these art swap tips are perfect. I love the idea of an eco-friendly art supplies video, it's going on the whiteboard 😀
That's a really good point. Cotton buds with plastic stems are banned in the UK now, but may not be in other countries. I save all my old towels/tea towels for kitchen rags, art rags, car rags etc and some must be over 30 years old now.
Swordfish pencil sharpener... I heard (Jason Morgan) if you get a cheap woodless graphite pencil and sharpen it between every 4-5 pastel pencils the graphite cleans the grinder channels and the swordfish sharpener will stay sharp for a longer period of sharpening.
Hey Gemma! Can you use these pitt pastels pencils in coloring books tho? i hope i see this comment tho i tend to not see response i know there rare tho
Hello! I don’t see why not, if the book has good quality textured paper. It might smudge or leave dust on the opposite page when closed so a sheet of tracing paper between the pages would be a good idea. You could also print colouring book designs on pastel paper 😉
Wonderful painting and great tips. I’m new to pastels. Have you tried laying down regular pastels and then doing the refining with pastel pencils. I’m considering doing the block in with more coarse pastels first. I love the vibrancy of pastels!
There's definitely a lot that be said for blocking in backgrounds with faster coverage! I like PanPastels for this as they cover the paper really quickly and the blending tools can give a nice soft effect great for backgrounds, it makes the pastel/colour pencil foreground really pop.
I'm new at pastels and I bought Prismacolor Premier pencils. What is your opinion about these and should I buy the Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils also. If so, what is the advantages of the Faber Castell Pitts?
For those starting out with pencil art, is it best to start with pastel pencils rather than polychromos? I've noticed with polychromos they require more patience when it comes to layering and blending.
Very helpful video, Gemma ! Just what I was looking for today ….and coincidentally, it came up on the home page on my screen on UA-cam before I had even put in any search ! So…it’s literally been sent to me by magic 🧚♂️🧚♂️🎉🎉🤗😂 Thank you 🤗🤗
1:02 If you take sketchbook paper and spray it with hairspray that seems to work okay. It is obviously not PERFECT but it works better than just plain paper!
Can someone please help with this question - Pastel pencils are made up of soft pastels or oil pastels ? I'm looking for oil pastels pencil to buy. But I'm not sure if pastel pencils comes with oil type.
I don't use a fixative on my pastel drawings - I find that it can make the colours look dull and once the drawing is framed, the pastel is protected from the glass
I did lots of crafts and drawing and painting when I was really little and age up to 12 yr old. It feels good getting back into art now that I'm 24 yr old. Trying to find a medium to do besides drawing and posco markers. I remember using dry and soft pastels in elementary school and it was really fun! ❤❤❤❤❤
I was looking for a reasonable price pitt pastel .My friends told me to start with Faber Castell .The only question i have are they permanent pitt pastel pencil on pepar. Im looking to cover the back ground of the coloring book Like Johanna Basford ,Kerby Rosanes etc .
Just discovered your channel, Gemma and you're currently my favourite artist - I'm learning so much. This picture is really appealing to me as I like a subject that also has a full background rather than just isolated on white. If you could do some more lessons on interesting and full backgrounds, that would be much appreciated
Not only a superb tutorial but a master class in how to present a UA-cam video. After watching Gemma I'm throwing away my acrylic paints and buying a set of these pencils.
Why are you in such a hurry? It doesn't cost anything for the video whether it's 10 minutes or 100 minutes. I could understand if this wasn't a beginners guide tutorial. This is ridiculous!

Could you tell me if the Pitts are no-toxic? Is there a certification on the box?
Great tips, I'm just pulling out my pan pastels and pastel pencils to use this weekend. Beautiful butterfly picture as well.
Pitt pastels are so good. I had the 36 set and now the 60 set. I also like the fact that the have the same colour numbers as the polychromos. 💕👍
what are your thoughts about using colored pencils such as Derwent drawing with FC Pitt Pastel Pencils?
💐🌹🌷🌸🌺🌈😂💗🍀
Help....why/when should i use white pastel paper instead of colored paper?

How to try Clairefontaine paper when it is soooo expensive? Does someone you know have a site where I could just buy one piece?
The smallest pack is 3 sheets, buy it with 2 friends and split the costs
Very helpful video, Gemma !

Wonderful, have 12 pastel pitt pencils as a beginner, so i know where to start.
Beutiful. Thank you very much.
What type of paper do you use? I can only find Canon Mi-Teintes Pastel paper at my art shop.
Daler Rowney Ingres paper and Clairefontaine Pastelmat, according to the video
I just got my first set of pastel pencils. I tried it out and I am made mud! haha How can you make highlights?
Thanks, very helpful video!

Pastel pencils are made of soft pastel. The oil-based pencils are Faber-Castell Polychromos.
Do you use a fixative? And are Caran D’Ache pastel pencils inferior to Faber Castell’s?
This video is more useful, thank you very much , I would like to know how to protect this painting?
hi, which fixative you recommend, which one is the best for pastels pls?
I don't use a fixative on my pastel drawings - I find that it can make the colours look dull and once the drawing is framed, the pastel is protected from the glass
I like the cotton swab technique, it's better that using the brush
Awww 🥰 nice drawing ✍️ I have. This pencils but 12 pieces I will ask something, when painting with pastel pencils, is it with A4 or pastel papers?
Sharpening a graphite pencil is said to sharpen your blades. Might wanna try that.
Great video!🔥❤️💛👏👏👏💐
swap pencil & knife from one hand to the other and hold the knife calm (still away from you) and just move the pencil towards you = more control
Thank you, very nicely done 🦋
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you! This is such a good tutorial on a beautiful drawing!
Simple yet such good info. Thank you!
Do these pencils have a chalky feel?

Fabriano ingres paper is available in white. Have you ever tried it?
Beautiful!

That's my girl instead of drawing eyebrows for an hour and get out with boys she does her art and completes her soul. I'm a fan wish u da best
Thanks!
Thank you! ❤️
Great video.
Pastel pencils are a medium, not a media. Media is the plural form of medium

Your introduction is to much and boring
Excellent explanation and demonstration, great approach to teaching, thank you!
