I watched some guy fall nearly to his death about 12 years ago. It wasn't a pleasant sight. His shoulder was ripped to the bone and his arm was hanging by tore flesh. It was from where he hit the ground from basically cartwheeling down the side of half dome. He survived but he had some serious injuries.

Have you ever been out walking and tripped and fallen? I think almost all of us have. All it would have taken was one of those. There were 66 deaths there from 1993 to August 2017.

What most tourists don't realize is that young people in particular take these kinds of risks all the time. Sometimes they are foolhardy and sometimes they only look dangerous when they actually are not that bad. But the Grand Canyon videos get a lot of press because more people are watching. I used to do things similar when I hiked around in the mountains when younger. Sometimes I took risks that were beyond my actual skill level, but most of the time they were well within my comfort zone.
I remember beeing THAT young and believing in my own imortality......but even then, I think I would have hesitated at THIS particular performance......

In 2005 I walked out on that very nose (top guy). Refused the jump to the bottom guy without a rope and effective belay. Walked back. Made the right decision.

I used to engage in this type of behaviour when I was in my teens and twenties..I had my fair share of cuts and bruises-lost fingernails and snapped Achilles tendon..ultimately I was lucky.. I'm still here..my brother had a bad fall which pushed his shin bones through his thighs and he had to have his legs bolted back together and a very good friend of mine lost his life doing something which I had almost come to regard as a walk in the park..it really makes you think very hard about how fragile we are and how precious and fleeting life is..now I don't do anything involving any sort of risk unless I'm getting paid for it..then it's a simple calculation of risk against reward. Hopefully this young guy will survive this phase of his life and stops experimenting with fate..

I used to engage in this type of behaviour when I was in my teens and twenties..I had my fair share of cuts and bruises-lost fingernails and snapped Achilles tendon..ultimately I was lucky..
I'm still here..my brother had a bad fall which pushed his shin bones through his thighs and he had to have his legs bolted back together and a very good friend of mine lost his life doing something which I had almost come to regard as a walk in the park..it really makes you think very hard about how fragile we are and how precious and fleeting life is..now I don't do anything involving any sort of risk unless I'm getting paid for it..then it's a simple calculation of risk against reward. Hopefully this young guy will survive this phase of his life and stops experimenting with fate..
