The points about doing work that matters, is a very important one. Thanks for a very good video. I am personally transitioning into bioinformatics algorithm designer, primarily programming, and this way you gain more freedom around where you are located and who you can work with.
Good to see you @rebelScience. You are a legend when it comes to bioinformatics on youtube. I am working as a web developer but i would like to transition into bioinformatics as well in order to do work that matters either on personalised medicine, or drug discovery. I do not know much bio but hopefully will get there step by step.
@@SchwarzeKatter Thanks! I am working on a few big things. One of them is a new big video series! Much more content is coming very soon. Good to see more channels like @BaseCalling starting on UA-cam.
I've never felt so understood. Currently in my final year of undergrad and really looking forward for next year doing Bioinformatics. I've been watching your channel religiously over the last few days and it has cleared up so much for me, I don't have many friends in science and those who are are never understand me when I say that there is more than just research careers. I know that this field has a very steep learning curve, i hope that you keep uploading videos so it'll be like a small cheat sheet for me when i start my career. 💯💯💯
same buddy ....its literally same for me too...im also in my last year of undergrad ..yeah but in microbiology..anyways I want to do masters in bioinfo in US
@@poppyshaikh1300 Oh hey same here. UG in microbiology, in my last semester right now.. I do love computers and biology equally so looking into bioinformatics haha. Cool seeing other microbiologists interested in the same field as me xD
👍Thank you for sharing such a meaningful video on UA-cam. I am a bachelor student in China, expecting to participate in bioinformatics. And I defenitely agree with your opinions in the video. While in industry you can earn a high pay working day in and day out, in academic you can do something that really matters like cancer genetics!!! I think that means a lot to me. Thanks again❤
It’s seeming like you can make more in industry directly from undergrad than you can as a post doc :( I’m a second year PhD student, academia is quite toxic
Hey. Currently am in msc biotech. I want to do an mtech in bioinformatics. But for that, i need to learn the basics of bioinformatics first. Can I do an online certification course for that? If yes, which platform is recognised for bioinformatics certification courses?
How do I get started with bio informatics? I have a strong biology background and molecular science background and have no computer science background. Do I start with a bio informatics degree or a computer science degree where do I start? Is there a short course I could do?
I studied bioscience at undergrad and just sort of stumbled upon a career in data analysis and business intelligence, I've learned and used a couple of programming languages for a few years and now thinking of leaving a relatively high paying job to take on an apprenticeship in bioinformatics that offers a masters qualification at the end of it. Any support you can provide with regards to interview questions and things to look out for would be much appreciated. Would my qualifications and experience as a data analysis be enough? Thank you!
Hi! The video is very helpful! I'm wondering how can bioinformatics combine with neuroscience. What kind of job is suitable for people with backgrounds in both?
How big do you consider the field of bioinformatics in relation to conservation and ecology is at the moment?. And thank you very much for such informative videos!
Bioinformatics is becoming essential for ecological toxicology, read article "Toxicity Testing for the 21st Century" In fact, I just received my MS in freshwater science and will be starting a new position in computational toxicology next week! :)
Q: Is there a particular project that one must do at the master's level for building their profile while also learning through it? in other words, the project involves using skills that one is required to know in the industry, and doing this will also give some prior exposure to the kind of work so any suggestions for a bioinformatics project where we can apply our skills?
Those were two different units under my biotechnology degree. Biostatistics is mostly math related and is all about statistical data where you collect them analyze them and you interpret them. On the other hand bioinformatics is mostly computer related and is mostly used in interpreting and understanding the biological data you have.
In industry, biostatisticians generally work on clinical trial studies and stats - i.e. Kaplan-meier, chi² and mixed models. Bioinformaticians generally work with Omics data. There can obviously be overlap when hunting for biomarkers where you will integrate Kaplan-meier plots with your Omics analysis to weight biomarkers by prognostic value. Hope this helps
What are the bachelor programs available for bioinformatics in the UK? or have to do bachelor's in biomedical science and then go for a master's in bioinformatics?
9:02 i have to disagree with you as a bioinformatician in industry. Due to the nature of my work it can actually be a lot more varied than in academia as we have the samples to maximise statistical power of our analysis so we don't have to repeat things over and over or fudge our analysis to "maximise" a low sample size
The other positive is you are much more likely to be around other more experienced bioinformaticians who can help you out if you get stuck and review your work properly
I don't get why I need a phd in order to work in the industry. Isn't the whole point of having a phd/postdoc is to work in academia? Why are they competing with others that have a master's degree?
Marketing. That's why they generally only hire board members who have a PhD too ( they'll always say equivalent experience is fine too but always choose the candidate with the phd)
Hello! I am currently pursuing bachelors in chemical engineering, about to start my 2nd year. I wanted to know whether I can apply for masters in bioinformatics? I plan on learning programming and dsa along with my degree, and do a bit of machine learning projects and do a data science course online. Also planning to take a biotechnoloy subject as my elective in 3rd year. Is it possible for me to get admitted in masters in this field then? Recently this field has looked interesting to me, I am wondering whether to make a career in it or not.
Oh yes, you can. Machine learning is a big skill in bioinformatics so absolutely. Some people come from Biology background, some people from computer science and engineering so yes you should apply!
I don't like that most bioinformatics research focuses on human health. Humanity's biggest concern at the moment is green house gas emissions. The fewer humans in existence the better! I want to go into plant or microbe research
