Thanks alot Oggy, i am a pharmacist from Syria who moved to Germany to start a bioinformatic master (cause the field didn't exist at the time in my country). I actually ended the first year of my bioinformatic masters and now searching to get more practical experience in labs or institutes. But after watching Ur vedio I got a little bit motivated and found the book in my Uni library. Hey Oggy! Thanks for this amazing comprehensive video that helped me solidify my choice! I have 1 question about the things that bugs me and pushes me away from a master's degree in bioinformatics: maths. Not that I'm the worse student but I'm scared of the contents that get lectured in a master's degree as well as advanced statistics. I'm currently on my last year in a bachelor's degree and I have passed in maths and stats with relatively good grades yet I still fear it. I started learning to code about 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it so I know I'll be motivated to learn what I need to continue. Did you find it that hard? Which areas in Maths and Stats were aborded and out of those ones, which did you feel more struggle? Thank you once again!
Hmmm, good question. It's impossible to predict the future but let me give it a go. I don't think AI is going to replace Bioinformatics jobs any time soon. At the moment it is just a tool in our tool box that can assist us and make us more efficient. But we are still in the early stages with ChatGPT and similar models. I think these technologies will become a lot more advanced in the future, especially as we have these tech giants competing with each other to develop the best models. One question that comes to mind is what does a bioinformatician actually do? - write code - analyze and interpret data - create databases - Write manuscripts - Develop and apply models If I think about it, ChatGTP is capable of doing most of these things with the correct prompts. Maybe not developing new models/ methods. So based on first principles, yes, it is a possibility that AI could replace a bioinformatician in the future. But I'm sure you could say the same about every occupation. I think what it means to be a bioinformatician will change. Also, just like on the dawn of the internet, new jobs will be created that didn't exist before. These are just some initial thoughts but I will think about this more and maybe make a video about this.
