Sorry for the delay but hope you guys enjoyed! Been talking to some peeps in the discord and someone mentioned that you should have been able to smack Rajang out of his counter with a well timed hit like with Jho. That would have been a pretty cool way to integrate his wall counter. Either way, as chaotic as it is, still a very fun and new fight, lemme know your thoughts on Jang :)

Honestly as a HH main the fight actually feels pretty good
But thats likely cuz i can just avoid most attacks and i dont havta worry about parrying.
Screw that though! Can we talk about that music though?!?! I hum along every time i fight him.
Also the image of everyone just flying backwards while he roars to the heavens is like the hypest thing ever (and actually makes me more inclined to learn the dodge timing on it)

I just saw this and have a story of my own to tell about this lad.
So I was playing some Rise earlier this week, and in this one hunt I decided to go get this nearby question-marked monster and lead it to the target with a Stinkmink. Against the better judgement of my fellow hunters in VC, I went all the way up to Shrine Ruins’ area 5 to find this bigass horned ape sleeping. I thunked it on the head and ran. Not much else significant happened, but I mainly remember Rajang for being faster than a running Palamute.

Watching this video after fighting Rajang in Rise proves your point that he can't survive with the sheer strength of hunters in the fifth gen, Rajang in Rise is more comparable to his versions in the older games compared to Iceborne, his moves do a lot of damage but are very slow, he does a lot of combos but he has so much end lag, and overall he's a lot more predictable in Rise... and between the wire bug's mobility and silkbind attacks and counters the fight in Rise is trivial, compared to Iceborne and even compared to the old games.

Maybe it's the Bloodborne player in me speaking, but World is my first MH game and I loved my first encounter with Rajang. He is a fast, hard-hitting "boss" with few openings, so you need to make them count; a classic example of a difficult hit-and-run fight. He wrecked my shit on the first hunt, but when I understood how he fights, I don't think I carted once in the rematch with a build I made for his fight. It's "git gud" in a nutshell...
And I actually really like that Rajang can counter clutch claws (only on his arms, I think, never the back legs). It's like the devs said "Here's a cool new mechanic that gives you more ways to fight all the monsters in Iceborne AND base World, but it won't work on this ONE monster." I think it's cool game design.

@@ChosenofDarkness8 While I always really enjoyed the MH games being hard and don't feel at home in them unless it's G-Rank, I think "git gud" should never set the bar for game design. It's trivial to design a challenge that is extremely difficult and thus by default rewarding when it is bested, but it is a different thing to make even the meat of the challenge itself fun. I guess it's a long winded way of saying the journey is the goal, and if the challenge forces you to switch away from the weapons (playstyle) you enjoy, it's not very good design for a franchise that appears to take pride in offering diversity. Ideally Rajang would be surmountable without hit and run so that people can use their favourite weapons consistently. And while he is probably beatable with something like the Lance, I rather felt like there was a little bit too much BS going on, like blocking not being dependable because pins ignore even Guard UP now, which he uses quite liberally with little time to read his tells. I wouldn't call it outright horrible all in all, but I don't think it's particularly cool game design either.

"The core aspects of Monster Hunter: Reward/Payoff for learning and studying the fight".
You just described my problem with several fights in Iceborne with this one statement. It doesn't feel this way anymore for some of the monsters. I felt Apex Diablos was fun because the dodge timing was better and you could reliably counter many of his attacks even without sonic bombs. Black Diablos and Diablos in Iceborne? Hell, no. You just have to dodge and dodge over and over until they let you have an opening or get tired. It's aggravating. That's just one instance I can think of off the top of my head but I think my real problem with Iceborne is that you have to take risks too much. To an inexperienced player in older Monster Hunters it LOOKS like an experience player is taking risks, but they aren't. They just know the moves and how to counter them. But in Iceborne MANY monsters play on risk to get good kill times, particularly with a cat or friends.
Also YES. A million times yes. Fucking quick moves are so overpowered on monsters in Iceborne. It's the one thing that irritates me the most about some of the Elder Dragons in Iceborne. They come out of no where and you literally cannot predict them until you're already faceplanted. Just, ugh...

As someone who's only just fought Rajang on PC, and started out with World, I think it's interesting that this video reflected so many of my thoughts on Rajang's New World incarnation. It's not that the fight is difficult, but that it's *unfair.* The player isn't rewarded for knowing what few openings this new Rajang has, and vital mechanics of the fight are either made more challenging than necessary (flinches being denied at random), or outright denied (clutch claw aim is spotty at best, so you'll sometimes be punished for trying to tenderize when you were aiming at its back legs). Overall, the Rajang experience now feels more *frustrating* than challenging, because it almost completely takes the flow of the battle out of the player's hands. In a game that focuses so heavily on the player learning and exploiting monster behavior, I feel like this was a grave error on Capcom's part when designing the new fight. And unfortunately, given their reluctance to change monster behaviors at all, it's unlikely we'll ever see its fight improve. Rather unfortunate, given it's otherwise an interesting concept, and an entertaining fight when things are going well.

I’ll be honest in Iceborne I just spam GS draw attacks on his tail most of the time, everything else is too risky and isn’t worth the damage. It’s very very easy to hit his tail and there’s no downside to it. Worst thing he can do is a somewhat telegraphed back hop.
Kinda sucks for people using other weapons tho. Oddly enough, despite the clutch claw and new mhw mechanics in general, I feel more constrained fighting certain monsters than I did in previous games.
In MHW, once I get all the part breaks I can reasonably achieve, I tend to just hit the same part over and over since that’s the quickest way finish the fight, clutch claw mechanic basically encourages this.
Why aim for a variety of small weakspots when you can just tenderize the easiest spot to hit and beat the monster down in minutes?

I didn't consider the points you made until you made em. Thx for sharing! I personally find him fun, he always keeps you on your toes and while he doesn't have as many openings, I feel like that encourages aggressive evasion which can be really helpful for improving as a hunter. It can also backfire and just be discouraging, tho, too.

  • @aegisghost

I think the reason they had to do that for Rajang in MHW was just the broken nature of ranged weapons.
In earlier additions using anything ranged was pretty much a death sentence. The controls were clunky, the ammo sucked and you took forever to kill. The openings had to be done to make the monsters easier for the players with ranged weapons.
Now in MHW, that's completely different. Guns are ridiculous. The LBG can slide AND RELOAD at the same time, the HBG moves you half the map with a single roll, Sticky ammo somehow stuns more than hammers and the new LBG Evade-Mine is just built to punish anything. For guns, Rajang has become a punching bag due to his super-limited moveset and telegraphed moves that don't have a huge hitbox.
Quad Punch -> Roll obliquely away him, you'll recover as he's on his 2nd-3rd punch, and just shoot him full of holes as he sails on by you.
Forward Slam -> Roll sideways, you'll recover just as he does, and have time for one shot or one Reload (+1/+2 speed)
Beam -> Casually walk sideways as he begins the charge animation, then shoot him to your heart's content.
Bouncing Hop -> Walk around, with the last hop down you can reload once or fire two shots.
Roar -> Roll into the roar to evade, then point-blank him twice.
Wall Counterattack -> Roll as he begins animation, you'll recover as he hits the ground. Enough time to fire 2 shots.
In fact, most of his moves can be hard-countered with a gun by rolling oblique to him (or for just evade-wyvernblast sideways for LBG, seriously, that's an amazing mod). He has zero tracking and mostly does straight line attacks. Silver Rathalos, on the other hand, hits fucking everything for a mile at once and makes it a pain just to be around.
tl:dr The weapons got MUCH easier to handle in World. Evasion got buffed to high heaven. If Rajang still retained the old openings, he would be more of a complete pushover for guns (Which are, seriously, doing way too much damage)
    Sincerely,
    An 11.5k HBG Mission Hunter

Hey, as a brand new fiver I just want to say thank you. As someone who's coming to the series from Dark Souls and is struggling against things you mentioned like unpredictable A.I. and fast out-of-nowhere moves, hearing a series veteran put so much into perspective about the flow of the game and how it has changed from past games was a much-needed break from the gatekeeping git-gud mentality that I've been met with from the online community (EXCELLENT opening bit, by the way), which up until now had been making me want to quit as fast as I started. I can look at this and say "this person has a clear head about what works and what doesn't when it comes to the design of MHW, and is also 10000 times better at the game than me", and honestly it just makes me want to get better too. Subbed, looking forward to more excellent content, and maybe one day I'll see you on the Rajang speed run leaderboards
Once Iceborne comes out on PC, at least

The gatekeeping git-gud vets your talking about are not real MH vets by a long shot, they are short sighted Elitists. They only talk like that so they seem big and bad and probably only played one other Monster Hunter game in the series and think their hot shit because of it. If you want to see what real MH vets are like come over to the Monster Hunter subreddit community and the REAL vets there will mostly agree that Monster Hunter World is hella fun since it's no longer a out-of-date game mechanic clusterfuck with shitty controls and will be more than happy to give you all the advice you need.

@@bilbogaggins9766 Nice generalization. I'm a vet myself, played 4 MH games before World. World is a good game but it has flaws. Just because people point them out doesn't make them elitists. People can just as easily call you a fanboy.
As for the sub, it's filled with people that have mixed opinions. I know because I've been browsing that sub for years, and I'm a moderator for it.

I completely agree with what you put forth, but I feel like he stands as the antithesis to everything you've learned in the iceborne dlc.
The dlc trains you to lure them to places with a ton of walls, to flinch and tenderize whenever there is a small break in the fight, etc., etc.
I have to force myself to break away from everything Iceborne taught me when I fight him, and I love it!
If he had his rock throw, or slightly more hitlag, I think he'd be even better.
For now though, we just have to wait for the Admiral V Rajang turf war

Honestly, I feel like old Rajang was about knowing his moves and being able to predict and punish him, while Iceborne Rajang is about being on your toes and being able to react and adapt quickly. Having fought him in both GU and Iceborne, I honestly prefer Iceborne's fight better. It feels more like I'm fighting a living being and less like a computer program.

Sometimes it feels like Iceborne r for the ppl that abuse the clutch claw too much, cuz before all u had was aerial style or insect glave to mount him. I think Capcom wanted rajang to be tougher to beat cuz hes like the first fanged beast in iceborne so basically Rajang is like "FEAR ME MORTALS"

Fatalis in world is infinitely harder than in previous games as is alatreon along with rajang...the older games only seem harder due to clunky movement and bad hitboxes though i agree that some monsters were harder previously.

quick information about the AI in MHW. it's not really random sure the monsters indicate what move they do next but it's still reading through Player input's.
if a monster has "nothing to do" and you wind-up your super move that deals a lot of dmg instead of attacking it dodges.
(Watching TDS Mhw gone wrong videos there might be some exceptions)
but since rajang looks like he's on a 100% attack uptime most of his moves are still telegraphed. which "can" be abused to flip him over and hit him where it hurt's

I know your probably won't see this but, when you clutch claw and he grabs and throws you off, you can use your slinger and shoot slinger ammo while on the ground.
Next time you fight him and he throws you, make sure you have Flashpoint loaded when your character is stuck in that laying down animation.
