    I'll be demonstrating:
    • A 1-inch flat brush for the background. How to lay paint down, and how to blend 2 colors together
    • A half-inch angle brush. How to use this brush to make different kinds of lines and blend colors together
    • And a small round brush. How to make different kinds of lines and maintain brush pressure

Thank you for doing a video on the basic use of and care of brushes. I'm not a raw beginner but I still have a lot to learn _ or re-learn in my case. Thanks for covering the basics in a very clear straight forward way.

My mother taught painting classes. She taught me to use dish liquid, after cleaning your good artist brushes, to keep them shaped. You just draw your paint brushes through a little dish liquid and shape them. Your brushes will harden, and once dipped in water they spring right back. I've always used that method to keep my brushes shaped. It also keeps any paint that is left behind in your brushes from hardening into the bristles and ferrule. I've got brushes that I've had for over 20 years that I still use, (and they still have their spring and shape,) by using dish liquid to clean and shape them.

Be sure to use Dawn dish soap, specifically. It's formulated to cut grease (oil) and that is a must with oil paint but it's also very gentle and thorough when cleansing other paint types and painting messes (mediums etc.) that we make.

You never disappoint, you have a very unique way of involving the beginner to make painting a fun and relatively easy project. Thank you for being so easy to follow by being humble enough to show what mistakes we make are the same as you make but not to fret, just paint your way out of them. That is very comforting for those that may become frustrated at not being able to copy what you achieve by you pointing out that each person develop their own techniques and style by trial and error and watching these videos and learning from them. Practice, practice and more practice along with freedom of experimenting goes a long way in developing the confidence to make mistakes but learn from them. It has helped me tremendously, so thank you again and again.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! At the age of 59, I began panting rocks but became interested in acrylic canvas panting. I've gotten nowhere in a year and realized that part of my issue is how to manipulate the brushes. I just couldn't get the pressure if my hand right and didn't know which brush to use. This helped so much! Thanks again!

I am a painting noob. This video was a great help as I have been inundated with brushes during my research. They way you covered these brushes use and care made it easy for me to understand. Your voice is pleasant and easy to listen to. So Thank You, I will check out any other videos you have done. My plan is to learn landscape painting. I used to work with glass both stained glass and warm glass (fusing glass in a kiln). My favorite panels were of landscapes. Landscapes are much harder with warm glass technique because instead of loading a brush with powdered glass you have to lay the colored glass powder on the back glass panel and push the powder into shape. Because of this you can't lay all the glass down at once. You have to do it in layers fusing each layer before you add the next layer. This could easily require 8 to 15 layers per panel.

I have never painted "pictures" in my life. I have painted walls, furniture etc. I love the result of seeing the finished product, but I'm not able to paint walls as much any more due to age. lol. however, I have watched your tutorials and got the courage to paint along. The first one I did was your summer flowers on an old fence. I was so amazed that by following your advice and technique It actually turned out looking "pretty good" since then I have painted with several of your tutorial. I'm such a fan. You have converted me to a painter. Thanks so much to my new passion.

So many videos on painting are all about different steps, and assume different things, but this is really interesting, because it's where the most basic of practice should be and should start: paint handling, and internalized as best you can, so you can move onto further stuff. Great! I can see why so many people despair and rush to digital, when maybe they would benefit from more instruction like this as a primer, and I'm mainly talking about myself. Thanks!

Thanks very much for giving us your time & expertise on basic brush handling, strokes & techniques. This is very helpful. When you talked about cleaning the brush, I had to chuckle because I’m a stabber. So now, I’ll definitely cut that out. (Pun not intended.😬) Now, I’ll share something I learned in a course I recently took, if anyone wants to know. ❤️ The name of that silver part of the brush is ~ ferrule. Pronounced FER-ral. As a noob, we learn a lot of technical terms. So I was happy to share. ❤️❤️😁

Learned something new in the first minute. I'd always thought of dry brush as in using the brush to make very light highlights. Here it means that you don't wet the brush before loading it with paint. The cloud technique is easy and consistent - something I've not been able to do in the past.

I'm new to painting during an ' inspirational block' in my photography and this video is exactly what I've been looking for.
Knowing what brushes to use for the right job and how to use them is like knowing how to set up your camera for quality shots. Anyone can point a camera and take a photo just as anyone can pick up a brush with some paint and create something.....but it's all about knowing your tools and using them properly to their full potential that gets results which you certainly put across in your video.
Thank you so much and I look forward to learning more from your videos. Brilliant!!

You are such a wonderful teacher! I love watching your videos. You honestly make me feel like I can paint anything. I didn't have the proper tools but I painted your holiday bird scene, posted it on Facebook (gave you complete credit for the painting of course) and still got lots of compliments on it! Thank you so much Jane :)

I have watched countless step by step videos of acrylic painting tutorials. Your videos are so informative and soooo easy to follow along with. I have learned so much. So far I have watched 5 or 6 of your videos not including this one, and I have learned something from each one. This is the fist time I have ever commented on any videos. You do a great job!!
