The Journey To Gray - Many Wrongs To Get Gray Right

  • The Journey To Gray is a quick slideshow showing the last few years of coloring my hair before deciding to go gray. And all the headaches of trying to get my hair stylists to embrace the gray rather than "blend the gray away" before giving up and doing it myself. I've made a bunch of videos here on UA-cam documenting how I got the gray • Going Gray the Easy Way this is what made me make the decision. I'm six months into having my own silver hair now and it's wonderfully freeing. This video is for those who are still trying to decide if gray right for them. Only you know if the time is right for you (and for some it's never, right Mom?)

Really amazing video and transformation. Absolutely love you with your natural gray. I've tried to go through this process twice, Twice stripping, bleaching, coloring and finally cutting it off to get it healthy again. My husband has REALLY made his opinion HEARD and doesn't want me to ever do it again. I applaud you for actually getting there! It's gorgeous!

I have dyed my hair alot of years, from red to dark brown, to blonde. I have been playing with the idea, for sometime to quit dying my hair and go grey. After seeing your videos, and your success, I'm eager to embrace the grey! Thank you, for your tutorials and sharing, your an incredible person, may 2017 treat you well!

Great video. I am nearly 63, and stopped having my hair dyed in 2011, five years ago. It took a year, I just kept getting it chopped off each month until the color was gone. I know I have inspired at least one woman to stop coloring and embrace her gray, and I get compliments on my natural hair fairly frequently. I am always amazed at the number of women who are afraid of their natural color and think that dyed hair makes a woman look younger. How wrong they are, in my opinion. Not to mention the cost, and constantly spending time in the salon. I think the final straw happened when I was in for a color, and my scalp and eyes began to burn. Not very pleasant. My hair is pretty dark in the back still, but I have a lot of stark white streaks in front. Frankly, I think it makes me unique.
You are a lovely woman, and your hair is beautiful.

What looks the very best on you is the short hair. There's something with the shape if your face, your head, I don't know, but it clicks right with the shorter hair. That's where you look younger and cooler ;)

I have very long hair which I've been dying for what feels like an eternity, once all my roots start coming in grey my hairdresser is going to lighten it out so it's not so noticeable while I grow the grey in, it's going to take a couple of years to get it all grey but I enjoy my long hair and am happy to go through the process. You are a stunning and elegant lady and your shade of grey really suits you. Thank you for all the effort you put in to your videos, I am a new subscriber.

    I'm 55 and for 5 years I didn't dye my hair so it is natural brown/grey and I love it. My husband from time to time says " color your hair, it is to grey" but I wont, I dyed it toooo much and love how it becomes grey. Love it! Love your yourney too ;

OMG!! Thanks God I found you!! I have been searching the web for some encouragement to my transition to grey hair...I am in my mid 40's with a NICE! family heritage of premature grey hair... I have been coloring my hair for over 15 years now...I am tired plus I'm loosing hair like crazy...so I decided to go grey against my friends' opinion...I'm single so no worries about guys opinion.... I cutted my hair short (kind of your style) to make easier the transition...however just yesterday I was discouraged an already thinking to go back to black AGAIN!!
Thanks to God I found you! You look fantastic! Very chic! Very elegant! Gorgeous!!
My hair is black so it is being hard for me to let go the grey....I have about 1.5 to 2 in. of grey roots....I am thinking to make some wide grey/silver highlights (on the spots I have more grey) using the manic panic virgin snow or blue steel....which one do you think will work better on my black hair.....please help!!

Thank you so much. I have been through the same thing. I had my hair cut not to long ago for the first time in 30 years. I started going gray at 19. So I spent years coloring it. My hair was so bad and I just couldn't take it anymore. I don't want to keep coloring hair. So I am letting the gray grow out. At the same time it has been driving me crazy watching it. Thank you so much for your story. It really helps me know that I am not alone with this. You have such great advice on how to make this happen so much smoother

Love it! I did it the same way. My hair was already very short so I had my hairdresser, against his will, Strip it! It turned a clown red, It had been dyed black. We then put an ash dye on it and continued to dye it lighter and lighter every 4 weeks with a cut. In 6 mos. it was pure white. I love it and do not regret it for one second. Now when I see women with dyed hair I can only think how much better they would look with it naturally white or grey. Ive always said if you go grey you must have a great cut and wear makeup. You are great at showing women how fabulous you can look going natural.

You look super beautiful with your natural grey 🌺 Trying to get my nerve up and hope to do this naturally. I had very long hair to my waist. Cut 7 inches off but, still dying it but, truth be told, I really can't afford to dye it every 3 weeks. This is scary but, you are helping me to make this decision. Thank you for all your advice!

Thank you for being so candid. We mortals cannot relate to Hollywood representations. Our real problems are very different from what we are allowed to view. You are beautiful and interesting in any haircolor but I see you have struggled to achieve what you want like the rest of us mortals. As you transition I have seen you look like Barbara Eden, Kim Novak, Ava Gardner. Not a bad bunch to look like. I wish you great success. Im wondering what your hair looks like now as I cannot seem to organize your videos by date. You have been very positive and benneficial to me in a particularly difficult time in my life. I will be sixty in four months. I live in Puerto Rico. God bless you friend.

This vid is fantastic. So useful. I want older age to be more vital in our society -- as vital as I feel. I want my gray to be an asset, not a liability. I decided to go gray because it was healthier, less expensive, and authentic. To appear authentic with dyed hair usually requires frequent professional attention. I balked at making that effort. Now, I spend my money on hip/urban short gray 'dos. THIS CHANNEL, reaching "our" market, is much needed -- and I hope you have tremendous success.

I have been coloring my hair some way or another pretty much since High School (which is when my husband and I met!). I just turned the big 60 (and proud to be here) and just had a partial knee replacement a few days ago and woke up a few days after the surgery determined to let my gray grow out. You have been an inspiration for knowing you can be sassy, classy and beautiful all while having stunning grey hair! I have fairly short hair and am not afraid of shorter, so as soon as I can bend this knee to go to my stylist, we are gonna go for it! Thanks for the inspiration and guidance.

Your grey is beautiful. I noticed a grey strand or two when I was 17.
I am now 52 years old.
But when I hit my early 30's, that when the grey hair, came in like a blizzard!!
I permanently colored it black, off and on over the years, since then, but within a week, I started seeing grey strands come right back.
I used rinses and semi-permanent color it never took.
I added a product to my permanent hair color mixture that was suppose to seal the color in and stop my roots from turning back to grey so fast.
I tried this, with several of these kind of products, it didn't work!
I tried to use color pencils and color brushes made for coloring over my grey roots
It was too messy and I got tried of using it.
So, I used permanent color once a month, at one time, I was coloring the roots of my hair with permanent color every two to three weeks, until a hairdresser told me, you can't use permanent color on your hair that soon and that often, you could go bald!! I have been coloring my hair, off and on for over 20 years. About 3 to 4 years ago,
I realized, I was tired of coloring my hair. But, I kept doing it anyway, because of what people might say and people thinking older than what I really am.
And over the years people would think I am 15 to 20 years older than my actual age and that would really hurt my feelings!!!
    Five incidents were:
    1) A guy asked my husband was I his mother!!!!!!!
    2) Someone thought my daughter, when she was a little girl, was my granddaughter!!!
    3) Someone at a job, I once had, said to me, "You are only in your 30's?"
then they said, "Have you had a rough life?"
    4) Someone said to me, "We are getting up there in age aren't we?", they were in there early 40's, I was in my early 30's.
    5) I decided not to join a young people's gospel choir, because even though I was young enough, I felt self-conscious about my grey hair said even though no one said anything to me about it.
I stopped telling people how old, because I was afraid of being hurt about what people might say to me, about me having grey hair at such an early age and thinking I am much older than I actually am.
The beginning of 2017, I said I am not coloring my hair anymore.
And I havent! But, the grey hair, came in like a flood!! But, I am trying to learn to live with it. Sometimes, it's so pretty, sometimes I Hate It!!
But, I am trying not to color it! So far, so good!
And other things I have experienced were hairdressers would col I r my whole head, when I said just color my roots!!!!!
And some would not wash out all the color properly!
And I asked my daughter one day, why were my ends so hard and dry?
She told me it's because of the color and it was split ends and damaged
She also told me, that I would have to keep trimming my ends because I would not stop coloring my hair, because the color is damaging my ends.
And I do trim my ends of my hair, every two to thiree months, to keep my hair healthy. And my daughter also said your hair will never grow the length that you would like it too because you have to keep trimming all the damaged ends. She said, Mom, unless you stop coloring your hair you will always keep having to trim your ends and they were always be damaged because of the color. Stop coloring your hair and then you can just trim your ends for healthy hair, not damaged hair.
She's a Cosmetologist and a Makeup Artist, so she knew what she was talking about.
So, as of now, I have had grey roots and grey hair all in the front of my face, since early 2017.
It still shocks me that my hair turned grey, so early in my life and so fast.
With my oldest sister and my brother, the same thing happened to them
So, maybe it's hereditary, but, my mom and dad didn't start to turn grey until they were in there 50's and they turned grey gradually, like most people.
I have my days, when I look at my hair and say, I don't like, maybe I'll color it and I say no, I don't want to color it anymore.
it's a battle for me, but so far so good.
My husband even said, To me for years, stop coloring your grey
now he says, I am glad, you stopped coloring your grey.
I am trying to except and love my grey hair.
I am going to ask God to help me love my grey hair.
Sorry, I wrote you a book, just wanted to share my experiences.
You are a real help and an inspiration to me.
Your encouragement of excepting and loving your grey hair
is a real comfort to me.
I love your videos!! Keep making them! Thank you!

You are one cool fierce woman! Thanks for documenting this journey. I'm turning white - and color resistant and of yet haven't gone all the way! Letting it grow for 2 months - hellish! Wear a lot of hats and have always adored wigs for "those days". Have shoulder length hair in a bob (not old lady cut) but so worried about when it does grow out .... will I be "one of those who looks 10 yrs older?" Wish I had the awesome bone structure that you have to wear short hair -- it's really fabulous on you - your energy just shines right through. Rock on Monique!

I look so much older when I go gray. I am still a honey blonde by choice. I feel so drab with my gray hair. I really want to go all natural, because I do have a pretty white/gray color, but for me at 65 I still feel 20. It is the only non-organic thing in my life. You look stunning!

Very helpful! My best friend cut her hair short to go gray, then did bleaching and all kinds of other things. It never worked out for her (she is back to dark brown).
I've been wanting to do this for a while, but 2/3 of my hair is still a darkish brown... top is 3/4 grey and I have a white streak. I suppose if I ever decide to cut my hair short again I'll do the grow out to grey, but do now I'm dying my hair a dark blonde and that's been ok. I don't get the obvious deep line of demarcation with the dark blonde, it blends with the grey.
I just found your channel and I am so enjoying all your videos. I'm nearly 54, and like you, I've got bright coloured eyes (blue-green-grey), but I'm much more pale (maybe it's our Canadian winters).

I'm a bit late on watching this video, but have been watching your channel for a few months now and I must say, you are a classic beauty; {I HATE you ;c)} but you seem to be able to pull of any hair style and color. I say, you even looked good on the pics where you talk of your hair being dry and unhealthy! You look great with the shorter style; that's my favorite look on you. You make gray hair a thing of beauty, not something to be feared. I'm a few years older than you and I can't wait until my hair is coming in fuller with gray so I can hopefully look...even 1/4 as good as you do! As Yoda would say, "Gorgeous, you are!" I hate to do roots and I'm in my seventies and my hair is a beautiful gray but if I want a different color I just use the roux color in a tent which can watch wash out so I could be every different color every week LOL at my age I guess I could but I just keep it like a medium brown rinse and then sometimes if I want to be the grey, I am the gray..... long as I have my paint on! Lol!
Having been a Barbizon Model in my many younger years before..and lighter pounds, I still like to look nice; that hasn't left me, and that's important for me to be that for my kids, and grandkids.

I know this vid was posted a year ago. I just want to say, your grey color is really you. You look stunning with your silver grey hair. Nature is just doing its job. A close friend of mine went grey completely, in her early thirties, she didn't fight it. At the other end of the scale, being a natural blonde, I thought I would follow in my father's footsteps and end up white hair in my 40s. But the Goddess of hair, stayed on my side and at 64, I am still a natural blonde, the same as I was in my teen years. My friends keep asking when am I going to start looking my age. In all that time, I have never once dyed my hair. Even though I wear it in a bun publically, it is waist length, thick and healthy. If we were meant to have been meant to be another color, it would have been in our genes. So really, why fight it, constantly throwing money down the drain. We need to love who we are and not what others want us to be.

You look relaxed and fresh in your natural 'white', but I understand your desire to switch it up with color, wigs, etc.
My dad never remembers his mum as anything other than white haired, as was her brother. My father started graying in his 20's and has been white for years. I assumed I'd be the same but it has not been so, I've only gradually started graying. My oldest daughter is a hairstylist and she used to manage my cuts and colors until she had children, then she only bought me the color product! She has forbidden me to ever purchase drugstore color! My other daughter suggested I go natural, but my oldest said, "Mum, put it this way: do you want to look young or old?" Haha! I now live in the UK and see my kids far less often - obviously - but I still try to keep it simple while keeping my hair nice, which at this point means coloring as needed with professional product in a shade that isn't too dark.
It's such fun to see your posts, and when I get white enough I'll transition to really low maintenance hair.
Bless you for encouraging so many women to just be themselves and to have fun with looking your best! ❣️💃💎
    Louise

You look fabulous. I'm 66 and it seems that I have white/gray streaks at the top of my head but the rest is darkish (black or brown) and gray (I think they call it salt/pepper), which is probably my natural color...not really sure because I haven't seen that color since I was 16. To me gray hair translates to "old" and I am not going down gracefully. I just wanted to tell you how fabulous you look~.

We're right about the same age, I've battled gray for decades ago; w/ this silver/gray fad, I've given consideration to giving it a whirl. Along came Monique & I am REALLY REALLY most probably going to try it!! I've got done temp dye tht I will use as a test run; pray for me!!!

I know you did this some time ago, but I am so glad you did. I to have been dying my hair since I was 15- Mostly to bright reds. Now being 43 I am so over trying to cover up the salt and pepper. It only takes a mater of a couple of weeks after dying red for the grays to come back so why fight it- But waiting for it to grow out takes to long- I lasted about a yr, but even then I still had a long way to go - so gave in and went red- I will look at the stripping and then trying an all over gray - Guessing it will be a few attempts at hit and miss like you had - but at least I will be able to embrace it - Thank you

My hair is black, natural. Jet black, or at least it was....now I'm 53, and, like you, chasing the 'stripe'....it's a slippery slope. I think I'll let it go gray, then the 'stripe', as you stated, just gets wider, and wider, and more grotesque, so I break out the colour....again. I'm wanting to go completely gray, but being black, I'm afraid doing what you've done will look horrific on my olive toned skin. Watching this has given me hope, hope that it'll be ok, hope that if I actually do get it stripped and use the manic panic combo it just might not be that bad....hmmm, something to ponder!

I have been going silver since I was 15 yrs old. I had blue black hair back then so the white that started coming in was very visible. I tried dyeing my hair but colour never lasted. Even professional dye jobs were gone within a month. My white hair just did not hold colour. Now I am a fully silver. I have seen young ladies and guys try to dye their hair my colour but they never looked as good as my hair. I am considering dyeing it all white.

Very useful video thank you. I am 49 and on holiday in France and will be going to the hairdresser to strip the red colour I have been using for 20 yrs and go natural grey. I am dreading it. I am scared it will make me look old but sick of having to dye my hair every 3-4 weeks. My problem is I am overweight at the moment and have very dark circles around my eyes. I am worried I will just look washed out, old and unkept instead of youthful. We’ll have to see.

I thought all the colours looks great on you and next to your grey loved the red. I have had all colours on my hair over the years and love red but it fades so fast. I think short hair is great on you its sassy, edgy and stylish just like you. I am tempted to take the plunge but my hair is not good with bleach as my hair is baby fine but the last time I had bleach on it seemed to burn my scalp that was about 6 years ago but I do love the grey. Hugs Vivienne xxxx

(ahem) I love your video, and I think you are absolutely gorgeous, perhaps now more than ever. I have issues with greying at +50, my problem is - I'm not. This is a valid complaint, and not a search for gratification... At my age I am not taken seriously about issues regarding my vast experience. I am often treated like a bullsh***er when I know exactly what I am speaking about. I hate being underestimated and treated like a naive person because my silver wisdom has not yet emerged. I have five new strands, but I would really like to begin my silver journey already. My hubby is all silver and even he patronizes me as if I have been left behind or something... I should be happy, right? I love how you embraced the Silver, it becomes you, and according to your photos, you are far more dignified and regal with your current hair color. I am genuinely envious! I have no regal, I want it!

I am 67 and have let my hair go gray but it is more like a pretty silver, my problem is the eye brows have fell out and my skin color on my face has become a ashy whitish gray. I dont smoke and my skin color was always a med color. Is this a natural thing for face color? without makeup I look 80, its not the wrinkles its the gray skin color that makes me look old

Love your hair cut, color and your styling tips. I'm an auburn brunette, late 50's, getting lowlights for a few years with an organic brand without chemical so my gray comes in quickly. Dying to go silver now that I have a 1 inch stripe but my stylist refuses to bleach it since it's definitely thinning out on top. I have fine hair but lots of it & happy to go from chin-length bob to pixie...I survived many perms and harsh color jobs in the 70's-80's - would you bleach out again if you had the choice over slow growth?
