  • Hello People!
Thanks for joining me for more guitar restoration videos!
The lacquer on this Gibson Les Paul bubbled up and delaminated around the edges of the headstock. It was totally fixable. Check it out!
I use Jasco Premium Paint and Epoxy Remover
    & ColorTone lacquer:

Great job on this. After seeing this video, I contacted you, as my Gibson Slash had bubbling around the tuners and you fixed it and made it look perfect again. You do great work at reasonable prices!

The trick with these is to use the black matte nitro finish. Then clear over THAT because it blends without witness lines. Also, try using an airbrush and working around your logo. Blocking with cardstock also works much better than tape, no witness lines. Even if you are using rattle cans it's better to block... When rubbing these repairs out, no water. Use 3M Polishing Paper and rub it out starting with the grey 1200 all the way up to the 20,000 grit. THEN work it backwards until you get to the Pink or the Light Blue and you'll have a beautiful Gibson warm aged lacquer glow that looks authentic because this is how the Custom Shop hand works a headstock after a fresh hand route and inlay job on a True Historic model headstock... I'm not putting down your work I'm just giving you a few finishing tips from experience because I've been doing this for 25 years...

Hmmmm...I would never fix it that way. I would just sand everything. Gibson had already created the name deep into the face of the stockhead. So I would just buy the "Les Paul" decal. However, your work does look nice that way, though.

The Gibson logo is an inlay, the Les Paul text is barely visible after your work. You should snad down the entire headstock next time. Mask out the logo, and you could buy the exact black matte nitro color in spray can. For the Les Paul text you should use a waterslide decal, or n appropiate stencil and paint it with gold. Then clear coat it. Then polish it, after the polishing process degrade the polish until you get the appropiate glow.

Unplug it when not in use. Use a Hercules stand? Detune it before travel!

I would NOT be happy if I purchased an expensive guitar and it did this!
