Thanks for the great tips. I am just waiting for my Dart XL to arrive, and the weather to get warmer and the snow to go away, but you have given me some great ideas about how to strengthen the aircraft. Also just subscribed to your channel and will be looking for more of your videos and will be checking your past vids too. Happy Flying
Glad our misadventures @UAVFutures helped spawn the development of this awesome looking wing. Great informative video, Keep up the great work, from Long Range Tony. (PS Johno and I are still loving our Darts!)
I always thought that nose extended way to far out w/o having a stronger build up. If you hit the ground a little hard, the nose will break off. Great solution!
@@invertedproductions7577 For sure welcome for the info. I checked on my model after watching your video and saw how much play was in the motor mount. I think I will glue in a rod(s) that rests against the screw mounts to keep it from flexing forward. I also saw Ragthenutsoff video picking up on this. Check out my buddies channel for the crazy maiden of his XL. JWWFPV. I have some balsa ailerons to replace those in my 2 M Opterra.
Nice video ! So the Bepp foam is much Weaver than the Epp from Arwing or Reptiles or Dolphin ? Is it more like Elapor from Multiplex ? Doeas it starter or leave behind blobs? Thanks
Lee Waples for your first flight, play it safe and have the elevons neutral or with a slight up trim. Have a friend throw it for you just incase u need swift input on the sticks. Off memory my plane flew fairly well on first flight but did need trimming a little. My left elevon is slightly (1mm) raised more than my right and it’s most probably from torque roll from the larger prop I wouldn’t adjust any control surface slightly down for first flights, a tad up will always be better 😊
hi there :) nope i tape my foam elevons on all my wings. Hinges can be done but i prefer tape. You can check out the video on Dart xl tips & modifications there
really nice video and review, great!Planning my build too. Smart idea for wing crossfire connection, will try do the same. But if i plan on using 6v for servo (sonic model say stock servo can go 6v so why not!)i hope nano crossfire rx will be able to handle it and not cook itself. For vtx connection what have you done? how you go through the wing with 7/26v, ground, video, smart audio, etc? thanks for your nice work mate
Viper Fpv thanks mate, glad it could help. With the crossfire receiver what will you be powering it off along with the servos ? A simple bec will do as long as it can output enough current for the servos. I am running my vtx just powder, ground and video to the fc so I am not using smart audio, I just set my power output from the start and rarely change channels on my wings.
i power them 6v from the fc couse matek wing can give em 6 volt so i wander if crossfire nano cantake a little more voltage than 5v. thx for your help mate
Beefy Beef the answer is no but it’s hard to say what actual mod stopped that as I made all the mods before a single flight. As you can see in this widow she fly’s very straight ua-cam.com/video/ZHaU2u1qqi4/v-deo.html
Really appreciate the video mate I've done the carbon mods to strengthen the nose and a few others like a better motor mount too 👍 only I'm having problems launching as it feels quite heavy for the motor/prop, and it didn't lift enough off first launch and took the front off the nose and I'm a bit scared now to launch again lol.. I did use solid 3mm carbon for all the reinforcement. Any tips would be handy please😊 using a 4000 Nano tech batt and it's got fc inav etc. Cheers for any help
I wont lie it is a painful model to launch compared to others I have owned. The stock motor is a little gutless but it should be still okay. I use a 4 cell with a hero 7 in the front. I don't use the stock prop though as they are pretty crap. If you prop down a bit and get the rpm up more it should make it easier to launch with more torque. Obviously test this before throwing it
@@invertedproductions7577 definitely seems a struggle but it's my first wing so was silly to go with this model but I was looking for nice smooth fpv flight and it looks great too when still fully intact 😂 I have a 8x6 gemfan on it too so maybe full throttle launch then?? And what about moving the batt slightly back a bit as its as far as it can go up to my split 3 camera atm which is good cg but might be better with very slight rear heavy for another launch attempt🤔
@@Nicklz5555 8x6 should be fine but I only use APC props. Also its sounds dumb but make sure your prop is on the correct way and motor turning accordingly. You can put the prop on backwards and it will produce hard any thrust. CG is the most important, all wings fly better nose heavy so bring it slightly forward of the standard COG just to be safe. Planes with the CG too far to the rear only fly once :) Pick a day with a small amount of breeze and launch into it, I would have someone launch it for you on first flight just incase. Plenty of ways to do it just check online.
@@invertedproductions7577 definitely had to double check tor prop direction but that was correct. Well I actually got it launched nice and easy today using a lighter higher c 4s instead of the 4000 4s and flew around ended up inverted as it was too windy and I'm stupid and nose dived straight into the ground at full pelt 😂 good with fpv but this is new and so bloody hard lol. All glued up again now and almost ready for another tomorrow. 👍
Hi great video, just got my Dart and looking to copy some of your mods. When you say shape the balsa elevons did you sand the reflex curve into them or just leave them flat on the topside and underside?
Hi Bluefish, I gave them are rather neutral shape on both sides so to answer your question they don't have any positive reflex in them at all. The balsa i shaped them from was too thick so I had to bring the thickness down the suit the trailing edge. I can send you pictures or post them on the zohd XL fb page if you like
What size balsa elevons did you use? What thickness? Looking into ordering some but want to minimize how much shaping I’ll have to do. Thanks in advance
Glenn Woodward this is a link to the size I used. I had to take a bit off the thickness. Guess u might get away with using thinner stuff if you want 😉 www.rcmodelaircraft.com.au/balsa-trailing-edge-9.5-x-38-x-1220mm-or-3-8-x-1-1
Hi.. Could you make a list with all the ekstra items you have on your Dart XL.. Even better if your could ad links to where to bye them. Thanks in advance.. and great info video..
Derrick Mitchell probably a combination of things, either way I haven’t touched the motor angle and I believe I have it pretty dialled in with the changes I have made
@@invertedproductions7577 ok cool but if you take a look at the motor angle you'll discover what I'm talking about. It was noted and as a manufacturer defect but if you made adjustments to stop that nose up at high throttle inputs then your all good👍

There was too many things I felt needed changing as soon as I got it out of the box and so I made these changes before I even flew it. Great video. Lots of good build tips. You know how to build, for sure. One tip... ditch the UHU glue and get FoamTac, awesome stuff.

But before you tape the balsa elevons, they need to be laminated right? Else the tape will not stick to balsa, is that right?
That is correct
Did you use pin hinges on the balsa elevons or simple use the cross weave tape hinge?
