    HI Glen - thanks for the speedy response.
    I had noticed when I attempted to add the recommended 2nd coat to the more vulnerable areas, that the 1st coat softened and started to drag, so I aborted the 2nd coat. Now that the Foam Armour is protecting the foam (one model EPS and one EPP) I am going to try sealing the Armour with automotive (acrylic) clear lacquer spray as used on car bodywork. I do like the way that Armour smoothes the surface. I would use it as a primer under automotive primer and top coat if I was repairing a foam model and re-spraying it.
    I have researched E6000. It is a contact adhesive and general warnings are not to let it near foam! But there are different foams and different version of E6000, including a spray-on can. Clearly trials are needed on spare pieces of model foam.
    Have looked at Mod Podge? Popular in The States for foam protection.
    Just to add to the list, B-7000 too.
    Great idea compiling a separate video on this topic Glen.
    I believe that you were going to email me sometime?

      Glen
      I've solved the Foam Armour problem.
      I coated part of an old foam aileron with Foam Armour on both sides. Once thoroughly dry I coated one side lightly with Halfords Clear Lacquer. Once dry I sprayed both sides liberally with water.
      The Foam Arnour only side softened, none of the bubbling that you observed. The lacquered side just beaded off the water, everything stable.

      Thats sounds like a good method, let me know how it stands up in the field. In my latest vid I show the E6000 coating for you. I have my respirator, Toluene and some E6000 and will try thinning the E6000 slightly and brushing it over the fuse. I have got some B-7000 as well and as I understand it that is just a thinner version of the same compound.

      @@bluefish3607 Hi Glen. Foam Armour Update.
      Application neat onto the foam of my E-Flite Turbo Timber Eve I considered a success. Time will tell if it ever gets to wet and need the clear lacquer. I estimate it added about 30g or so to the airframe weight.
      Application to the EPP foam on my Hacker Super Zoom XL wasn't probably necessary, but I looked at it as an experiment. This time I diluted the Foam Armour with about 10% water to help it flow better. That worked. But I reckon I was a little impatient and applied the clear lacquer too soon and hadn't allowed enough time, about a day, for the Foam Armour to full dry out and cure. Consequently it added about 120g to the weight of the airframe. Was made this worse was that there is a lot of surface area behind the CofG so I needed to move the battery forward and add 30g nose weight. The clear lacquer I consider a success in waterproofing the Foam Armour.

    Perfect timing for me! I've yet to fly any of my 'lockdown builds' and am just getting into FPV from flying LOS fixed-wing and helis. The DartXL(E) was my first build after watching your excellent video(s) and I'll be sure to incorporate your good ideas before the maiden. Mine differs in that it has a DJI AU and the standard motor, but also a matek F765 Wing (overkill for this model and I've learned since). Crossfire nano and T antenna on the wing and also will use the 4S Turnigy 5200 Lipo, but have built a couple of 4S 2P LiIon packs to try later if I can keep max current down.
    I've set it up for autolaunch but still wondering if I should keep in Manual and get help to toss it! Looking forward to your maiden and any info you can give about initial CG, autolaunch settings, nav-cruise throttle settings, rates, etc. Anything to help with de-risking the first flights! I'm intrigued by the Foam Armour and will get some to try - I used HD packing tape on the wing tips and leading edges but never happy with the 'tape' look.I guess it's function over looks.
    Again, many thanks for your very helpful videos and advice! Incidentally, I also have an AR Wing Pro to maiden and have nicked a lot of your ideas and 3d STLs :)
    Cheers, Andy

      Hi Andy I love both the Dart XLE and the AR Pro and get excited every chance I get to fly them. I have DJI AU in my AR Pro as I wont be pushing it out that far and is more of a proximity fun plane, that said I have been out 5K with it.
      The new XL is my new long range platform so going with 5.8Ghz analogue to try and get to my goal of 25km out and hopefully using my MyFlyDream tracker which has proved to be a bit of a challenge so far.
      I will be covering all the Autolaunch settings and testing the cruise and efficiency in the maiden video which I may get done later this week but weather looks a bit dodgy.
      Glad you find the videos entertaining and the 3D designs useful.

    Hi Glen
    I note that you have used Beacon Foam Armour protective coating on the foam of this model. I am trailing it on a couple of my models, but it's too early to know how effective it is. Foam Armour has the feel and smell of PVA woodworking adhesive, so I don't find it very easy to apply - Beacon should produce it a little less thixotropic in my opinion to ease application.
    So how are you finding Foam Armour a year on?
    I recall you also trying a different coating, but I cant find the video you mentioned it in: E6000 or B7000 maybe?
    Whatever is was, how did that coating perform?

    • @bluefish3607
      @bluefish3607  Рік тому

      Hi Dave
      I stopped using foam armour because when it gets wet it bubbles up and I often land on wet grass. I think it would be ok if kept completely dry.
      I now coat the front of my fuselage on my AR Pro with E6000 glue it is extremely tough, fully waterproof and has withstood some pretty hard crashes. It is pretty thick and I just spread it with a finger or credit card wearing rubber gloves. I believe you can thin it with toluene and apply with a brush but I think that stuff is pretty noxious. I will showing my technique in an upcoming build video.

Should I just drill a hole next to the pin connector and lead the 4th wire through it? thanks

    Nice review, really enjoyed your videos and got many insights. How many layers of foam armour was done on the craft? Im planning on building my 1st wing, Initially I thought of going with atomrc dolphin as theres a local pilot in my area managed 40km with a 10kmah li ion, but after watching alot of your vidoes and got alot of insight, im considering the ar wing pro or zohd dart xl enhance. Im looking for high speed cruise and normal cruise speed long range, of all these wings, which would you recommend best suited for my build?

      I just used a normal paint brush and put one layer on the fuselage, wint tips and elevons. It pretty thick stuff and you have to brush it on quite quickly as it starts to dry pretty fast.
      I would go for the AR Wing Pro as it can do everything, long range cruising. or fun flying like in my video, I have set mine up with DJI for up to 5km range and as fun flier and my Dart XL is being setup as an efficient long range cruiser, but if I had to choose only 1 I would go for the AR pro personally,

      Hi, I have never had any interferenace between a VTX and GPS or indeed with Crossfire. I have built may quads and crammed these electronic components insite a carbon frame very close togetehr in some caes even touching each other. I am inclined to think that the consensus that interference can happen is a bit of a myth, but I am not certain, just that I have never had an issue. Mount things as you like and test to see if you get any issues and move things if that happens but I doubt it will. Thats my take on it.

I like the detachable wings and want to have the crossfire on the wing tip, but wondering how to get that 4th wire through the wing connection. 2) did you run into any problems with your lower crossfire antenna dragging on the ground during landing?

      The Immortal T antenna is very tough made with reinforced spring steel wire and has no problems at all, especially as I land on grass 99% of the time. If it ever does bend slightly it either springs back into place or I just give it a gentle bend to straighten it up.

    That,s a nice and clean build. How does the version 2 fly compared to the 1st version.? Version 1 has a terrible tendency to pitch up on high throttle which i find really annoying!

    • @bluefish3607
      @bluefish3607  3 роки тому +1

      I cant say yet Kyle until I maiden it hopefully later this week. I had to change the motor thrust angle on my version 1 to correct the excessive pitch up on higher throttle. Hopefully they fixed that on the V2 we will soon find out 😀

    Nice! I'm looking to buy one of these...
    Did the foam armour work out well? I'd like to know the name of it if it works well.
    I'm just starting out with RC planes - which parts would you say are the bare minimum to get going? Thanks!

    • @bluefish3607
      @bluefish3607  2 роки тому

      Hi Jack the foam armour works well on wingtips and small areas but not so good to cover an entire plane. Just Google foam armour and you will find it. Its produced by a company called deluxe materials.
      The bare minimum to get started with a plane is the plane itself motor esc radio receiver and transmitter. This will allow to fly line of sight and you can progress to FPV by adding a camera video transmitter and goggles as well as a flight controller and iNav.
      You can get lots of help and ideas on the facebook group links in the video description.
