I've been playing and listening to this song since I was 16 years old this was one of the best and overlooked song on the Hardcore Jollies album fly on Tiki,Tyrone Glenn Eddie Gary Boogie,Ray, Bernie,Junie,Mahlia and Debbie the funk will never be the same without you. I've been a fan since I just wanna testify.
I am in my 50's and I'm JUST now appreciating the musicianship and artistry of these songs. When I was younger, I basically skipped over most of these songs thinking they were just weird or lame. I was expecting more of the FUNK they became known for later. I had to go back and revisit a lot of these now that I am older.
LOVE it!!! Never heard 'Soul Mate' before this morning and in one listen it's become one of my favorite. I'll be listening to 'Soul Mate' over and over for a while now. 🙏🏾
There's another version by the temptations with Eddie hazel on guitar also there's an extended instrumental of this song closest Gary shider ever got to sounding like hazel

This was the shortest tune on the Hardcore Jollies album but it was my fav on the album. After listening to the full extended version of this I don't know why George Clinton decided to edit it. It's worth the full six minutes that's for sure.
I'm a big fan of Parliament Funkadelic. I discover them (10 years ago) through all the Chili Peppers covers. By the way George Clinton produced Freaky Styley :D
One reason why I fiercely defend the RHCP. They put me on to a lot of serious funk and Flea has said many times in interviews to NOT LISTEN TO THEM, listen to Coltrane, PFunk, Meters, etc. They were a gateway for me and I’ll never disparage them for their youthful excesses. I’m Freakey Styley and I’m proud.
63 now, I purchased this album on my discount @ Gemini record shop, where I worked after school. Freddy Breedlove the owner was a Funkadelic fan. Soul mate & Smokey got a lot of rotation

this is George clinton himself singing lead with Eddie hazel on guitar but I heard it was either Eddie or garry and I heard Billy Nelson on bass and tiki on drums p funk.portal listed shider as the bassist but that does sound like tiki on drums it's nothing for George to not credit people Eddie wasn't even credited on the hj album
That was due to Eddie being wanted by the law at the time, so they credited Eddie as “G Cook” who was his mom! Look it up, you will see songs on that album written by G. Cook!
Airline Jazz Publications , must agree with,. Robert - This is the best song on this album, It's a mixture of funk and song as well it has a jazzy style to it ...
My 2nd favorite PFunk ballad after You’re a Fish and I’m a water sign although I’m not always certain it’s a ballad because it’s still just so damn funky😭😭
i remember having to hide these albums as a kid...parliament was safe but some of the funkadelic covers would have gotten you put out of the house! moms wasnt having nothin with no three sixes on it in the house. i personally did not like the cover art. that big pink lady was the reason....oh yeah they could have also left the sixes out as well.
opinionatorX Surelly, must be a sniped thing *on a compuest concept (this mean along the others details)* . Not i mean that is something isolate for say " oh, Funkadelic maybe was a Satanist" or what, more in the sense of "is part of a global conception on the cover= one of the "Hardcore" jollies thing, like the distortion of perception produced by LSD represented in the thunder eyes of the Big pink woman..maybe.
If George Clinton was more overtly sexual he'd be compared to Prince as a musical genius In my opinion no one really touch Prince level but Mr Clinton should be mentioned as a genius in the same breath as Prince, Marvin, James and Stevie
Dr.Funkenstein uncut P-Funk this like a Heart Attack in its funkiest form. All the way to the Soul. Love the Jimi styles flourishes in the end. Only a reminder of music business corporate greed and garbage toxicity attempting to hinder brilliance and genius. Jimi is true to the moniker 'Wild Thing' P-Funk flourishes at the end of this love letter is without doubt tribute to the fumes left laced on the note. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
EDDIE WROTE & PLAYED IT. AS HE OFTEN DID BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL ISSUES HE USED THE SYNONYM GRACE COOK. GRACE COOK IS/WAS EDDIE'S MOM, IT ALLOWED HIS MOM TO TAKE WRIGHTING CREDITS, THAT WAS HIS WAY OF PROTECTING HIS MONEY & LOOKING OUT FOR HIS MOM.
No disrespect man, but I gotta disagree with you. I think D'Angelo's got better chops. He plays everything from James Brown to Soundgarden and keeps his band tight af. Not to mention the sophistication of his harmonic progressions. Don't get me wrong, Parliament Funkadelic has written more jams than anyone, I just think D knows music better
Ike Gutierrez indeed. D'angelo is an amazing artist. Not to mention even just his style of singing, the notes he hits and how he hits them. Dude is just amazing and original. but I could be wrong. Been wrong before
That's Fuzzy Haskins. He had the ability to get many different tones and a certain "funk" drall on his annunciations. He sings lead on If You Got Funk, You Got Style. George Clinton sings lead on Smokey and riffs on You Scared the Love Outta Me. Bernie Worrell confirms in an old interview," George had a beautiful high first tenor range." I saw Funkadelic when they were young.
When I first heard this song I assumed the same thing but it's not Clarence it's George. Listen to the voice. Clarence does sing Good to your earhole and Better by the pound.
I know D'Angelo brought most of ya here...but now that ya know what moves HIM, maybe it's time to know Funkadelic!
A Ant wait I found this on my own, please explain what you mean by that
Orion Ingram there’s a video of D’Angelo playing this on guitar and singing done by GQ I think
Orion Ingram Your right explain that I have been a fan since the 60's
certainly not the same case with me
Orion Ingram D’angelo covered this song for anpromo for ESPN or something. Search for it on UA-cam. It’s killer
When George is not being silly with his singing, he has one of the smoothest vocals. Especially on "Holly Wants To Go To California" on Uncle Jam LP
And on "Freak of the Week" he is super smooth. Notes hit clean and succinct
@@lionessheart2652 Facts! Favorite song on the album.

"Given the chance, I would love the hell out of you little girl". What a cool line.
