D’Angelo could always play guitar just not well enough to play live I guess.. there’s a clip of him playing left and right back in 2000 on UA-cam somewhere, D’Angelo doesn’t put things out there until it’s good enough to him and perfect for us lmao
@@Martydoessykes Well the riff on left and right is basically just the same chord just chromatically run up and down the neck 3 steps in a loop right? It's very basic. My guess is he had a basic understanding of guitar before 2000, but that he went from just knowing a few basic stuff to actually becoming an accomplished guitarist during his hiatous?
Jean-Marc Pruit Almost, but the important part is that D'angelo is in that Pantheon. I would include, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and Willie Hutch.
Excellent playing ! The original guitar part was played by the late great Gary Shider of Funkadelic. There's UA-cam video of Gary (later in life) where he briefly plays it live. Gary had a deep gospel background. (RIP)
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression the guitar was played by Eddie Hazel as the song is partly credited to “Grace Cook” which is Eddies mother’s name.
@@potatochipeat6965 Well, Mrs. Cook contributed some lyrics to a couple times. But wild Eddie Hazel was usually in & out a lot of the times. Gary is using gospel embellishment on guitar and Cordell Mosson (a converted guitarist) is using a pick on bass. On the original version.
@@Ston247 Ah, thanks for correcting me. I’ve just gotten into P-Funk recently and they’ve already become one of my favorite bands. I’m a bit obsessed with Eddie Hazel
I see hanging around Spanky will get your Guitar chops up! It's nothing like real music!! D you rep VA very well bruh! God bless you and can't wait for the next album!
'Bout time you came bk big bruh! Really though, thx to your artistry/major influence on music culture, in some ways it's like you didn't so much as "leave" as you just paused to catch you wind and see what we'd do with what you generously gv/offered the world! Your legend/standard kept music aloat! Much appreciated Hymn
Are you serious TheMagicForeskin? I can cover many songs and I'm far from a genius! I said D'Angelo was a genius because he proved it with 3 masterpieces! His debut Brown Sugar nearly single handedly invented neo-soul music. His 2nd album Voodoo was voted 1 of the 500 best lps ever by Rolling Stone and his 3rd lp, Jazz Café is one of the landmark live albums of the 90's. He's a highly inventive singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who stands as one of the most influential artists of his era.
I'm a huge MBV fan. Sheilds is a great songwriter/guitarist. And though Loveless was hugely influential to 90's noise-rock bands it is still a relatively unknown masterpiece, on the other hand Nevermind is a widely known masterpiece that is arguably the most important lp of the 90's. But what in the hell does that have to do with D'Angelo? I can legitimately make a case that D was as influential to 90's soul as Cobain was to 90's rock. They both HELPED to invent 2 new sounds neosoul and grunge.
You make great points bro. I agree commercial success or the lack thereof does not make an album great or not great, which is why I was confused by your Nirvana MTV lp was more "famous" than D'Angelo in London comment. Nirvana's influence on the 90's is incalculable but slow down on MBV. As great as MBV were Sonic Youth, Dino Jr. Jesus & Mary, etc. were doing similar music before Isn't Anything. And I don't agree that they "transcended genre boundaries" they only influenced other rock bands.
Kudos to you TMF. You are obviously a fellow music geek and for that I send you much love. You have GREAT taste in music but we will agree to disagree. I don't think it's about either one of us being wrong I just think we see it different. You know your stuff to drop a John Cage reference on me. Cage was a big influence on The Velvet Underground and he was also a huge influence on Gary Wilson. If you're not familiar with him check out his GREAT album You Think You Really Know Me. Peace brother.
I agree Nirvana is more influential than D or any other artist(s) of the 90's perhaps besides 2Pac, but you are truly misinformed and highly UNDERRATING D's impact on 90's soul and pop to say that MBV were more influential to 90s music than he. Albums that "transcended genres limits" are lps like Impression Keep On Pushing, that's why Dylan put it on his iconic ...Back Home album cover. Tapestry, it was 1 of the best ever in rock, soul, pop, singer-songwriter, etc. Loveless only influenced rock.
And I know that 1 lp can't invent an entire genre that's why I said "nearly single handedly invented". And sure "neo" genres are really "inventions". You take a foundation of something old and add new elements to it to "invent" a new fusion. Tell The Byrds that country-rock wasn't "invented" or tell Dylan that folk-rock wasn't "invented". They'd laugh at you. Overrated? Brown Sugar is one the best soul albums ever made. That cant be debated. And of course, Nirvana's live album is more "famous"!
heard he spent the last 5 years teaching himself to play guitar. what a freak. the man is truly gifted.
***** Nah he said in an interview that he picked up guitar during his 10 year hiatus .look it up!
oh really? my bad! sorry!

I just find it amazing that he started learning how to play the guitar in his mid-20's and can play this well now.
Why? When you have motivation, you can do whatever you want. Plus, I'm sure he had a few great teachers.
Chuck Berry, James Brown, Sly Stone, George Clinton, Prince, D'Angelo
Keith Harris that just about covers it
Jean-Marc Pruit Almost, but the important part is that D'angelo is in that Pantheon. I would include, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and Willie Hutch.
Jim Lee Oh and sooooo sorry, Stevie Wonder.
Jim Lee and Al Green.
phorest True! I was thinking more about musicianship, but on that note George Clinton wasn't a musician either. But al had them vocals!
Really, really great. I loved Funkadelic's underrated "Hardcore Jollies" album and I wish he'd cover more of their stuff.
It's a shame it's not on Apple Music so a lot of ppl miss out on it even if they are fans of the group
I'd buy an acoustic album of D's in a second!!!
I just keep watching it over and over
i can listen to D'Angelo's music over and over again.
Wow! Brother D, wow! That is one of my favorite Funkadelic songs EVER. D'Angelo you murdered that cover homie. This man is a musical genius.
he's got it
LOVE IT! D'Angelo won me over with 1 of my fav Funkadelic's song "Soul Mate". 💯❤️🔥🫶

Nasher188 Do you have the link of Garry playing "Soul Mate"?
It's one of videos where he's paired up Bootsy. Just before he passed away. He's only gonna play a couple lines, buts it's there. I forget which one.

I loved this video every since GQ released it! D'Angelo is nothing but the truth! So ready to see this man live on September 2nd!!

I agree D'angelo is a musical genius, regardless if he reinvented the wheel or not.
I can't get enough of this video.
My True Soul Mate shared this with me.♥ Amazing!
Dope!! Love his Minarik...wish it wasn't such an expensive guitar
A genius. I love him
Ditto, Spanky Alford was the greatest. Very humble too. And D'angelo is my favorite artist period.

Garry Shider fool, the person who originally played the guitar on this song
Dayam, he can groove on the guitar too? This man got big balls.

that's a funkadelic song
Garry better though
Shows you how great the P-Funk vocalists actually were. Admire his effort but the vocals sound like crap compared to the original.
awful....just awful..... lol
Oh my god, I just wanna sit in front of him, and listen to him- just take him in, he is spiritually beautiful... good grief!
nice try. hes not playing.
