In the middle of building that revell kit - it’s a pig of a kit as you say - but wanted to build an Australian variant so had to find after market decals. Did a lot of googling about if the 1/35 would work and a lot said it’s not bad and would work but glad I waited and found 1/32 ones (thought they had gone out of print but found out the company just does limited runs!) now based on this review! Thanks Nigel for another great informative vid!
I built the Panda huey and the engraved panel lines were huge. At the time I read a review that said you should fill in the panel lines except for a small amount so they didn't look so bad. Needless to say that was a lot more work than I cared to do at the time. Stay safe.
those old Revell kits always did suck balls, but the contrast in quality of what Dragon brought to the table is light years ahead, it was notable the quality dragon was about, building their figures in the 90s, they were so far ahead of the competition..
I just bought one of the Revell Huey's on a whim the other day because it was only $11 US. I loved this kit as a kid many...many years ago. When I opened the box (which was a proper top opening box BTW) I realized why they were $11! Same funky green, hard plastic although I had several more loose parts rattling around in mine. I'm not sure but I don't recall seeing the figures in mine either. Not that that is any great loss but still, at least include the parts in Step 1! They will build into a respectable model though. Would love to see you beat this old pigs ear into a silk purse.
I guess it's inevitable really... when you compare the differences between 1/76 to 1/72 the difference is negligible, but as you jump up the scales, what may be a millimetre between 1/72 or 1/76, would become significantly larger, so 1/32 to 1/35 would really become noticeable...! It would be nice if all the model manufacturers could settle on standards, and stick to it! At least I don't see Tamiya doing 1/50 scale armour, instead of their newer 1/48 scale kits.... ;-) Nice video, and very illuminating, and it looks great with your new Sony camera! Very good indeed. :-)
Monogram did both 1/32 and 1/35. I think Revell bought that out at some point in the 80s or 90s. They kept a few of those kits I believe. Have no idea if they still make them.
1/32 scale kits are about 8-9 % larger than 1/35 scale kits. I was a bit disappointed that ICM didn’t make the AH-1G in 1/35 scale, but it still is a nice kit.
Hi Nigel may I suggest you take a look at the Maarten Heilbron channel he does a complete review of your new camera and I believe he gives some guidance on ideal settings for video. Hope this will be of some help to you. Picture quality and sound quality much improved now you are using the new camera. Best wishes Vic.
Thanks for that comparison and the mat was great as background, although maybe a beige color would be better so the camera does not dim down the brightness.
indeed big difference between the 2, I bought the Eduard references for the Huey 1/35 (on the specified packaging 1/35), but what I received is 1/32 (marked on the photoetched) , complaint to Eduard, they don't want to know anything, for them it's normal
Bottom line is a new 1/35 D/H Huey is needed; and not for some outrageous price either (meaning it doesn't need tons of photo etch crap that jacks up the price and many don't use anyway). Some accurate pilot seats, the rear bench seat and the gunner seats on each side along with the XM-23 pintle mounted M-60s would be the biggest detail areas. I've made decent models of both, with the help of resin detail sets from Cobra Company... sadly, now out of business. The exterior detail on the Revell kit is very nice, but it does have shape issues around the nose and the "opening" pilot doors are... yeah, kinda clunky. The Panda/Dragon kits' over emphasized panel lines, rivets and that stupid "cargo hatch" on the starboard tail boom all require work to make it look less like a toy. Many of the details are overdone, way too thick. Dragon didn't do itself any favor by adding some photo etch, a new decal sheet, a figure set and charging an outrageous price for the toy-like Panda kit.
I would not mind if they did both scales 1/35 and 1/32 I woud most likley get both and I would like to see 1/32 armor. I have been a nut for the B-36 every since I toured one on display back when I was a kid. I have built a couple of Monograms 1/72 scale kits and end up giving them away because I have no room for them. I also have built the 1/144th scale kits as well but find hem to small. I keep hoping for a B-36 or B-52 in a scale somewhere between 1/144 and 1/72 but I guess that just would be to off the wall for most.
Built numerous models of this kit. Even though the packaging is cheap, with time and patience you can build a realistic looking model. Too bad the troop seats were taken out of this kit.
I Hate Revell! plastic bag models! same as those little airfix kits in the 1970's in a plastic bag with cardboard stapled to it mostly little galleon ships.. I buy any manufacturer now but never revell. your review is brilliant Mate! Dragon kits anyday!
Side-by-side really highlights the difference, you would think it wouldn't be that noticeable but it really is. Thanks for the comparison Nigel.
As a 72 builder who is thinking about going to 35 scale . That was really helpful ,thanks.
I wish my time and wallet could keep up with all the reviews.
My list of wants is as long as War and Peace.

More of a difference than I expected. Thanks for the comparison.
No problem!

And just to confuse matters Border Models have brought out a 1/35th Scale Messerschmitt BF109..

It's always been a pet peeve of mine...I call them TV dinner boxes sheesh Dane

I actually scartch build in 1/32 scale. It's actually the happy medium. Not too big, not to small.
That revell kit has some serious sinkage, Airfix must be using the same guys or mchines ; )
Great comparison, I’m looking for a good Huey model, please can you recommend one.
Thanks Nigel. That was an interesting comparison. My armour friends will not be too happy about this but what can you do, eh.

Nice vid Nigel.............. 👍👍👍
Thanks. I sure wish there was a decent 1/35th kit out there...
You just saved my pockets
