you should mention, that in order to maximize your toughness when deciding to increase your amor or all-res, you have to look at it in combat. In your build for example, you get more than double the amount of amor because of soul harvest and horrify. You also get some intelligence from soul harvest, which increases the all res.
I am super duper happy that someone (you) made a detailed video about this... I always wanted to make a video discussing this topic many years ago when there was so much incorrect information circulating regarding dr but I did not have the means to make one. Incredible job, well done. And very good work on your channel in general. Keep it up man.
Great video bro, best toughness video ever ! You did a fantastic work explaining % damage reduction because its hard to understand on your own if you dont have a base of how resistances works in the game. One of your best videos for sure. Keep uploading and cheers.
OMG man BEST Diablo 3 guide ever I have learned more in this video than in all of the years playing and all of the guides I have watched....now I understand things better....still gonna die in gr every time a monster sneeze near my DH tho....keep up the amazing work
pelli85lions seriously? Thought you might be new then you said “all the years”. So sad that people still don’t understand the basics of a game that came out over 7 years ago.
Actually a _very_ helpful video. I've been trying to figure out why I'm struggling with the amounts of damage I'm taking and didn't understand how to look at it beyond the raw total 'toughness' number, and so wasn't even sure where to start trying to improve it or what to prioritize. Thanks a lot =)
Great video, a good in-depth explanation. Keep up the great work, its plain to see you’re very passionate about your videos. My understanding of all the little things in this game has improved greatly thanks to your work. And we all know that the little things make a huge difference in Diablo. 👍🏻
Fantastic analysis! This is a very excellent guide! Thank you for doing this. This is by far the most helpful defense guide for the game. Great work! 😊
Wow your numbers are so much better than mine lol Really interesting guide here. D3 can be rather confusing at times so thanks for clearing these things up.
At 12:15 you requipped The Wailing Host. You had +50% reduction. You should gain an additional 52% from The Wailing Host (of the remaining 50%). But 52% of 50% is 26%. So, add 26% to your original 50% and you should get 76%. But the game shows 75.98%. So, i'm a little confused on this part.
interesting note - some abilities will additively add damage reduction. If a DH has zoey's secret and then equips cloak of garwulf, the extra 18% damage reduction from 2 wolves will be added additively, not manipulatively, to zoey's belt damage reduction bonus, which is huge.
Yo man so I don't know if I missed it but. How can you tell what your total resistance is? Is it the average of everything added up? For example: Physical:913 Cold:710 Fire:710 Lightning:710 Poison:1100 Arcane/Holy Resistance: 937 All that ÷6 = All Resistance?
A few Questions- i have resist all on nearly all piece's of gear for my barb.. even in the sockets. My toughness, before buffing up, is roughly 25mil. Dps is 1.8m.. using wr waste with captains, Flavor of time, convention, and zodiac. I still keep getting randomly one shot by things. I also often get spanked by affixes. 12k str, 4.5k vit, 30k life ps, 10k lph, 1k life per resource. I switched my convention for ring of might and put on ground slam. Its almost more of a problem now since it pulls em all on me(thought i wanted that?) Cuz they still often plainly melt me even though i melt them aswell. I can successfully do a 110.. but rly rly struggle heavily any higher. Am i able to set up something to share my characters infor like everyone else does? Or if im on console is that not available? Also if i have 0 melee reduction and 0 ranged reduction, would it be that significant of an increase by replacing 2 rolls of resist all to have those two instead? Ugh wish i wasnt the only person i knew that rly enjoys this game.
Sounds like you have low main-stat for 110+, have you augmented your gear ? If not you should, at least 100 augments. Also make sure you are following a proper updated build guide. Take a look at your equipped legendary gems and level them as high as you can. Your life should be at the bare minimum 450k and the answer to your last question is yes. Pick reduced damage against ranged.
good video overall 14:20 is correct , though a bit misleading to properly explain it you should also explain how the difference is calculated in actual dmg reduction. In your example you had an 87.22 to 87.35 increase for int gem (all res) and 71.58 to 72.36 increase for str/dex gem (armor) it would suggest that 72.36 - 71.58 = 0.78 compared to 87.35 -87.22 = 0.13 is 6 times more toughness you gain than from str gems over int gems (0.78 / 0.13 = 6). however that is wrong, the amount of percentage that increases is always relatively worth more than the previous one. So a proper calculation would be to do the math reversed from 100 (actual dmg incoming decreases by that %value). so that would be for int gems (all res) 12.78 (100 - 87.22) / 12.65 (100 - 87.35) = 1.0103 = 1.03% dmg reduction improvement; and for str/dex gems (armor) 28.42 (100 - 71.58) / 27.64 (100 - 72.36) = 1.0282 = 2.82% dmg reduction improvement. So the difference in that example is still close to 3 times more toughness. However we got all res gems that give relatively almost 3 times the value of int. Just keep that in mind. For the Tal Rasha set for example that means (because of how the defensive set mechanic of this set works), that in almost any case if you wanna ramp up your defense via gems it is to go diamonds and NOT str/dex gems.
Yes, very true. I just didn't want to over do it with the math part of it but I gave 3 different examples so I think people got the point. Regarding Diamonds also 100% correct. They are more all ress but the Topaz gives me damage on top of all ress. If I'm playing a Strength/Dex build I would go with Diamonds, most of the time.
@@MnemGaming fair enough. Yes exactly, still would need good armor gems(like 780 the equivalent to the all res variant) to make it actually worth switching otherwise it's almost always better to just stay on int like you said ;)

Great job! After six years I'm starting to understand where these numbers come from thank you
Thanks for all the trouble redoing the editing. It's ended up easy to understand and most informative.
Seems like you guys loved it, which is awesome.

Still not as bad as necro :) You are welcome!

Basic rule of thumb, you want to aim for 10 armour for every resist all. Say you have 2600 resist all, you're gonna want to have around 26,000 armour.
Holy **** Mnemonic plz come back for more d3 content . D3 is life

True. You can always tell through looking at percentages in the Details, Defense section.
Very nice video, keep these guides coming.

Awesome job. Can you share the d3planner link for this build you showed in this video!
I don't have a d3planner link but I can show you the Guide I saw for it -> ua-cam.com/video/5-Tb4DaVfS0/v-deo.html
Nice work
Great work (as always) TY

Toughness also works differently depending on class.
My crusader getting damaged while spider attacks armour when I am playing
Quin69 has made a video similar to this some time ago. Nice for a update at current state of the game. Keep it up, bro.
Yes he has, great video too! I did my own twist on it by showing in game numbers and explaining a bit differently as well. Thank you :)
good video overall
14:20 is correct , though a bit misleading to properly explain it you should also explain how the difference is calculated in actual dmg reduction.
In your example you had an 87.22 to 87.35 increase for int gem (all res) and 71.58 to 72.36 increase for str/dex gem (armor)
it would suggest that 72.36 - 71.58 = 0.78 compared to 87.35 -87.22 = 0.13 is 6 times more toughness you gain than from str gems over int gems (0.78 / 0.13 = 6). however that is wrong, the amount of percentage that increases is always relatively worth more than the previous one. Another helpful video, thanks Mnemonic 👌🏼
Wow thanks. Now ima be a super tank! ive actually stacked alot of life regen since its the easy way out while leveling :D
Downplaying phys resist? It is the most important res because the best progression mobs and hardest hitting mobs in GRs deal phys damage
Good tips, thanks!
Thx a lot bro. Really helpful guide.
I guess same thing goes for damage %, right ??
Yes and you are welcome :)
Great video for beginners, also, where are you from?
Thank you. Malta.
Great video
100% - ((100% - 7%) x (100% - 6%)) = 12.58%
Uhmmm, I'm pretty sure that strength and dexterity give you 1 point of armor per 10 points of either of those attributes, NOT 1 to 1...
See I just put on the gold wrap item and maximize gold income and increase my armor by several million watching as max torment enemies do 56 damage
