- Crispiest Onion Pakora Recipe With Tips And Tricks (Vegan Recipe) - How To Make Restaurant Style Onion Bhaji At Home - Pakora Recipe
Pakora is a very popular street food of India. There are countless varieties of pakoras made with different type of vegetables out of which onion pakoda is one of them. Onion bhajis are also very commonly made at all homes served as a tea time snack or appetizer or even as a side along with rice and dal. I very frequently have them as a side with rice and dal. They are irresistibly delicious so make a large batch if you will be serving a crowd as they disappear in seconds. Serve them with any dip according to your choice but I like them as is. You can keep them warm in a 180 degree F oven while frying the rest ( if you are doing a large batch) or fry them partially and plunge them again later in hot oil for a few seconds to make them crispy just before serving as they taste the best when served hot.

Ingredients for making onion bhaji - Makes 8 to 10 small pakoras
* 1 large red or yellow onion sliced moderately thin
* 1/2 of a medium green bell pepper (capsicum), totally optional
* 3 to 4 green onions (spring onion) or 1/2 a cup of chopped coriander leaves(cilantro) or any herbs according to your preference.
* 1 green chilli (optional) finely chopped
* 1/2 teaspoon level salt
* 4 heaped tablespoon of gram flour(besan). You can substitute besan for garbanzo bean flour (flour made from chickpeas). Chickpea flour may require a little sprinkle of water later as it is thicker in texture compared to gram flour hence absorbs more water. Please note that the texture of gram flour varies from brand to brand so you may need more than the proportion mentioned above. Add a tablespoon at a time and stop adding when you see all have come together satisfactorily. Adding too much of gram flour will make the pakoras dense and heavy.
* 1 tablespoon heaped rice flour or cornflour or potato starch (1 tablespoon level)
* 1 teaspoon level baking powder. You can even add just a pinch of baking soda (1/4th teaspoon) instead of baking powder.
* 1/2 teaspoon curry powder (totally optional or you can use any seasoning according to your preference)
* 1 teaspoon dried thyme finely crushed or 1/2 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwaiin)
* sprinkle some water if you see mixture is too dry but do not add too much.
* oil for deep frying or you can even shallow fry them in a frying pan.
Please note you must fry the pakoras on medium low heat to get a golden color & do not overcrowd the pan (fry in batches).

Excellent video great recipe thank you so very much 🌹🥰
I make pakora quite often here in the UK for special occasions (particularly Bonfire Night). My city, Leicester, has a big British-Indian population so Indian food is part of our local culture. I remember eating samosa and pakora at the Diwali celebrations when I was a kid! Great memories :D

So glad to hear that. Thanks for your feedback.
Great recipe, Bumbi. I have made it your style and it came out the best onion pakoras I ever cooked. Yes, definitively paprika, spring onion, coriander and chili in the mix. A dal curry with these are a dinner for me. But I do like some raita/tsatziki on the side and some bread. Your cooking is amazing, well done!
Wonderful 👍🏽👍🏽. Thanks for trying this recipe.

@@CurriesWithBumbi Thanks and wish you too a happy Republic Day 🇮🇳🌸
aaaaaaaaa why am I watching this at half past midnight! I am so hungry now haha.. I did make onion bhajis before in a similar method. My gf's mom told me the trick of salting the onions before.. she also used red onions which I definitely enjoy more than white or yellow. I didn't use pepper or chillies in the mix though just simple onions.. I think I will try your recipe soon as I love pepper and spicy chillies :) I also saw that match stick chopped potato also works well what are your thought's on this Bumbi?
You can always leave out the green chillies. You can also add thinly sliced potatoes, but squeeze out the water as much as possible after salting it as potato releases a lot of water and can make the pakoras soggy.
Bumbi have u ever tried banana spinach and fenugreek Bhaji? If not u must! Mash banana and chop spinach with ginger garlic cumin coriander turmeric powders and of course fresh chopped chilli mix in fresh fenugreek and add atta and fry till golden and eat with yoghurt mint sauce. So good! I’ve been making these years I’m not sure if it is even common recipe but it is honestly so good!!
This is the first time I am hearing about this recipe. Sounds so yummy. Thanks for sharing.
I think your recipe would taste even better if you swap the banana for plantain ssv.
Bumbi what is a substitute for gram flour?
Garbanzo bean (chickpea flour)
Dear Bumbi--I am confused about the rice flour/corn flour business. Is corn flour the same thing as corn starch, or is it very fine corn meal? Rice flour isn't that easy to get around here.
By the way, just to report in, as of Feb 12, 2022, the cilantro around here in northeastern Massachusetts has been pretty dismal lately. When I try to buy some, it's limp, and has no smell at all. I love the stuff, so I'm pretty disappointed. Does anyone else here have the same problem?
Cornflour is same as cornstarch. Not the fine cornmeal. Leave out the rice flour if it’s hard to get.
Coriander leaves are always optional. Use them in abundance when you get them 😀
