  • I tested the Z-Packs Pocket Tarp and the Six Moons Designs Serenity Nettent on a recent trip. This is an ultralight, ultra-compact tent system that takes up just over a liter of space in my bikepacking bag.

    I've been using the same set up for awhile. Works great for the cost . I'm going to make my own inner net tent this winter using Zpacks bathtub ground sheet. Nice video, thanks for sharing !!

    Really appreciate you also mentioned the weight in metric lol. Definitely good point about compactness > weight. I was focused on shaving off every gram while picking out my gear to get started with bikepacking, but now I just have a lot of light yet bulky gear that I need to cut down on once again. Nice review

      Thanks so much!! I've definitely started to value compactness over weight with every trip. Though, it's certainly a fine balance!

    This is the first tarp settup I've actually wanted to try! Too many summer mosquitoes where I like to ever dare camp without a net. And that packability...

    Super nice channel so far, discovered it last week and checking your videos one by one. Great tent setup too! For trips with another person I already bought the Six Moons Luna Duo so I had to go with a very low budget for solo trips and chose the 3F UL Lanshan 1 Pro combined with a carbon pole and msr stakes but it works like a charme so far ... I can't beat your system's weight though, sooo light.

    Thanks for that! I've been running the SMD serenity inner with the SMD Gatewood Cape. Love the setup, but wanted to go with the pocket tarp, you're video showed me that it is exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks a bunch!

    Omg I can't believe how small it packs down! When you pulled it out of the side pocket of your bar bag I was legit shouting WHAT at my laptop. One thing that puts me off this tent is how exposed you are in it, like anyone could see in, if you were getting changed in there for example. Also I get really cold at night so I'm guessing this wouldn't work for me because of that as well!

    • @queercyclist
      @queercyclist  3 роки тому +2

      I KNOW IT IS SO TINY!!! I also didn't care for being so exposed, but on the other hand, I like the airflow for summer camping, since it's so humid and hot where I live. There are actually storm doors that you can tie down for a little more privacy/rain protection. Ultimately it wasn't the setup for me, though-I just sold it!

      On aliexpress you can buy a four season inner that is much more opaque and also slightly wider. The downside is that it has poorer ventilation and weighs a bit more, despite what it says in the description. I like mine!
      Brand: 3Ful Gear
      Type: Lanshan1 four seasons inner
      Area: 210*75/95*112cm / 230*80/100cm (L*W*H)
      edited: the second set of dimensions is for the plus version.

    Great review, and just discovered your channel and quickly subbed! This is an amazing combo, but I agree with your critiques. About a decade ago my go-to shelter (I am a backpacker tho, not a bikepacker) was an older version of the Zpacks mid tarp plus either a net tent inner or a bivy. I liked it a lot, but I am 6ft tall, and I also move around a lot in my sleep, so size did become a deal breaker for me eventually. But in fairness it did keep me pretty dry and cozy most of the time. I switched to a flat tarp and bivy or net tent set up after that, and that's still my go-to shelter for below treeline trips. My Borah Gear 7x9 silpoly tarp plus bivy, guy lines, stakes, ground cover, all in comes to 620g. But I usually pitch it between two trees, so no need for a tent pole. Total cost for my set up was roughly 250 USD, so pretty affordable. And lots of space under the tarp to hang out, change, cook, etc. I like that I only get in my bivy to sleep, so less fiddle factor while at camp. Happy holidays!

      Thanks for your comment, Cesar! I'm glad I'm not alone in my thoughts about this combo. I moved to a double-walled tent after I sold this one and I am relatively happy with it. I am still warming up to the idea of a bivy. I live in such a humid place and I know bivies are prone to lots of condensation. I am not really keen on the idea of being stuck in a damp bivy sack, though I know a lot of people swear by them.

    • @CesarValdez13
      @CesarValdez13 2 роки тому

      @@queercyclist Thanks for getting back to me! You are right to have doubts due to condensation. That's why I designed a bivy with a vapor vent built into it. It's called the Dimma bivy, and it's an "off the menu" bivy you can order from Borah Gear. I highly recommend it. I live in Sweden and it's very humid/wet/damp here much of the time. If you Google it my blog should pop up if you are interested, or check out my channel, I have a few videos on it.
      But I also saw that you have a Yama bug bivy, which looks pretty sweet. You could combine that with a flat tarp, but I get the appeal of a double wall tent. I had a Big Agnes before too and liked it a lot, but I'm a flat tarp person through and through.
      Do you backpack as well, btw?

    Just what I was looking for - a video on how well the serenity net fits into the pocket tarp. I've got the serenity net already which I've used with my Gatewood Cape, but I'm stoked to save up for the pocket tarp this year. Thanks!

    Why did you decide against the six moons gatewood poncho tarp that is designed to fit with the net tent?

      I had gotten the Z-packs pocket tarp used for a steal on Facebook marketplace, and then decided I wanted to try out the netttent for it.

    This seems like an awful lot of money for basically what I can accomplish with a decent poncho and some paracord lines. Really great video though, I appreciate it.

    I have a question - I know nothing about bikepacking. I'm a backpacker. What does an average bikepackers loadout weigh? Like the average backpacker taking 30 to 35 lbs of gear and the more experienced "ultralight" all in with water and food can be about 20 to 23 lbs. How's that translate in the bikepacking world?
    Thanks and have a great day

    • @queercyclist
      @queercyclist  2 роки тому

      That’s a great question! Others might chime in here, but I’d say it depends on the purpose and length of the ride. You can more comfortably carry more weight on a bike than on your back, but there’s definitely a tipping point where pedaling a lot of weight can be very tiring. I think packability is largely more important than weight. “Ultralight” bikepacking is more for people who want to do bikepacking races or don’t mind being a little uncomfortable at camp. I find myself in the middle of the road, with some more ultralight stuff and some gear that’s heavier/bulkier.

    • @nedanother9382
      @nedanother9382 2 роки тому

      @@queercyclist Ahhhh you dodged (kinda) I figured it was similar to what you said. It's different for different trips. I was looking more towards a number. but now I can see difference between the back and bike is more than I thought. On all my trips I have to do food and water filtering...I suppose on a bike near a town thats not the case. It sounded like you may have gotten rid of your tent. Did you settle on one? I've always heard about the fussiness of setting up that hexamid shape. I require simple just a tiny bit more than weight.
      Thanks for the chat

    hey be fair - zpacks is cheap compared to the competition. That was the exact excuse I gave my wife..."Sooner or later they're going to realize that they're the cheapest in spite of the fact they're arguably the best". BTW they figured it out this year and raised prices by 50 for the duplex (which I would highly recommend for you). Big Agnes and Hyperlight mountain gear seem to have really loaded up on the price point. It feels like a Nike thing, which I won't do. The duplex is 50 times easier to set up (than all other zpacks tents) its one single piece and it has all the room you were speaking of. It does however require two poles. It's 19 ozs. For a 3 br 2 bath tent. It doesn't break into smaller pieces for a bikepacker but I'd bet overall its a smaller volume.
    Best of luck
