Bugs under your tarp! Best solution? Does a bug inner work with a tarp?

A tarp is only your outer layer: under it you will have a ground sheet, combined with a head net if necessary, or a bivvy bag, bug bivvy, nothing, or: a full bug inner, like the one DD Hammocks sent me for demo purposes. In this video: is it good to have one of those for combined use with a tarp? The short answer is: yes. But, not always. Having to set up your tarp so that it will fit over the inner will limit your pitching options. Maybe you will only get one viable option. But: if that is a good option, you will get something that is pretty close to a backpacking tent, that lacks the versatility of a tarp, but will work in most circumstances. A bit heavier than just a tarp, obviously.
And then, you can choose whether to bring the inner or not (not in winter, I can imagine) and you will be able to use your tarp for all these other applications that my channel is all about.
Also in this video: if you decide on a bug inner, what should you look for?
So, let us know if you use one, and if you like it!
Unfortunately, the demo product and the shaped tarp that it was designed for are not available on Amazon at the moment.

Some camping hammocks with bug net can be used on the ground like a tent. You suspend the net under a trap line with elastic bungees & then just bivvy bag inside the net.

Thank God for the Papa Hiker video.. Have been missing it for some time.. Kindly keep them coming.. As for bug net, I think half pyramid bug net like some Chinese ones are better solution for one person, since the pole is outside the bug net, one can keep backpack inside tarp but outside bug net and tarp can be closed for bad weather.. 👍

I live in Alaska. In the summer a bug inner or the inner part of a tent is essential if you don't want mosquitos to eat you alive. In my experience tarps are versatile enough that with some creativity you can put almost any shape and size inner under a tarp. We mostly just used a tent inner without the rain shell and it worked perfectly fine. We were able to use the inner for years and years long after the rain fly was worn out and useless. We always camp with dogs too and having even the nominal barrier of an inner keeps them safer while we're asleep and not able to respond immediately to concerns regarding them.

The one Tigris tipi style mesh tent, tho ever so slightly heavier, is prolly a better execution. You may be too tall as it is only 6'5" long however. For me tho at 5'7" it's a better choice. The smaller dimensions work better with more of the tarp shelter pitches you have taught me and it's only needs one trek pole on the outside and has the same loop to hang it ifnyoud rather, is a better execution imho. Add to the the height is 3.7' I can sit up indian style perfectly and the shorter height again allows for lower pitch shelters or pitches with the smaller DD tarp not just the XL DD Tarp
I want to thank you more than possible in a comment sections for all your amazing and free pitch ideas and other info, even the trek pole bear defense as I cannot own a fire arm. I was considering my own outlandish ideas before I saw your videos. Side note is love to do wild camping in Norway one day

ok... THANKS to your Feb 26, 2021 "New Tarp Pitch for Thru Hikers" video, I have worked out a perfect solution for me. Might work for others; here goes:
    1. i have a DD 3.5 X 3.5 tarp -I'm tall, so i need the room
    2. i set up the "thru hiker tarp tent" per your excellent video ...
    3. i bought (from REI) an "Outback Mombasa Double Rectangle" mosquito net; it forms a large upside-down box, with an open bottom. It has no poles.
    4. i pull the upper part of the net through the tarp-now-tent, front to back, and holding the 2 upper corners together, anchor it at the top, on each of the two trekking poles i use for uprights, which puts the "box" open at the bottom... (the top net-shape doesn't matter, it can be squished).
    5. i fluff out the sides of the net, and use magnets to keep the sides spread out to the tarp walls (buffer the magnets with something soft; neodymium magnets might be too strong)
    6. i tuck the open bottom of the net-rectangle under my sleeping mat
    * i have 100% sealed top, sides & bottom bug protection.
    * sets up in less time than any tent i have used.
    * front & back of the tarp tent open wide for complete ventilation, leaving the bug net down.
    * ♀♂, practice makes perfect; always train with your equipment. ♥

Standswithabeer, that sounds like a GREAT setup. Could possibly also be done for 2 persons? I always suspected that the Trail tent (it's what I called that pitch) would work very well with the 3.5*3.5, for two persons.
      Kind regards, papa hiker

@@papahiker9014 there is room for two. Also, it's cool the way raising and lowering the poles changes the size. BTW... i have found that the end caps off of those little packages of pop-up biscuits make the best magnet holders & are very smooth with no edges.

Bug net inners are great for Australia, they keep out all manner of bad things. You can use a hanging style bug net if you improvise hanging points off your tarp so it doesn’t sag down on you. If you already own a small/ med sized free-standing hiking tent with a seperate flysheet, then just use the inner from that and it creates a much more friendly net shape than the pyramid. Great to see you back Papa Hiker 😊👍

    • @papahiker9014
      @papahiker9014  2 роки тому +3

Hi Billy, oh yes, it protects from much more than mozzies obvi. I hear Australia has a lot of animals that you don't want in your sleeping bag. We did the inner tent trick before, but since ours was made for dome poles it didn't work out that well.
      Kind regards, Papa hiker

Good to see you here again! I like the concept of a bathtub floor (no holes please!) with the bug mesh. My old bug tent perished from age, no floor was a problem. Here in the southern US summers you can go from begging for even a slight breeze to having a fire hose of near-horizontal rain with 30+ knot winds pushing it under any opening in just an hour's time. Mosquitoes and gnats make bug mesh mandatory. Few lightweight solutions can cover both needs. Hopefully DD is listening to your comments and maybe together you can design something more adaptable.

I have the Lifesystems free standing Geonet and have to tarps, one is 3 x 3m and the other the DD 4 x 4m tarp. For summer now I can be near water ways and swampy areas and not get bitten to death by Mosquitos Yippee. Added to this I have the Nitecore EMR 10 Mosquito repeller! Hi Fayley! Yes, that is true. It adds just a tiny bit of weight, but much function. Youcan glue them yourself using strips of nylon and mcnett or seamseal glue. Check out the material of the inside of your tarp first: not all glue holds. Kind regards, Papa hiker

I’m with you on unboxing! I’ve always thought a bug bivy was all I needed, but I recently hiked in the Ozarks and the ticks were everywhere. Anything laying on the ground was likely to have ticks on it. I realized something like the pyramid you are demo’ing would be useful.

Pretty simple. An unboxing allows you to see the product, set up and use, before you yourself spend the cash. Let's you see if you really want it, could use it before you spend cash to get it. Let someone else spend before you do. Pretty smart.

I use a poncho as a ground sheet. The trekking pole goes thru head hole. Instead of the bug inner I use a mesh bug suit because it's so much lighter than a bug inner. The bug suit is also surprisingly good insulation under other clothing so it's also dual use in my kit.

Hi Tim. that sounds like a smart setup! I myself will be going to a bug heavy arctic region next month, and will be taking only a head net. The packraft is my ground sheet. When I go without a raft I will also use a poncho, or a tyvek ground sheet with a sewn foot box (DIY)

In a pyramid tent, the walls are also the roof. When you open the zipper, if it's raining, rain will come in. A zipper on the short side minimizes this problem.
The hole in the floor protects the tent, because the pole doesn't drive the fabric into the dirt. Also, it allows you to use a longer pole, by putting it in a hole in the ground. In my pyramid tent (by Bear Paw Designs) , the hole has a collar with a drawstring, to keep out water, dirt, and bugs.

You didn't say much about the netting effectiveness, round these parts the midges just use the walls of many nets as perching platforms from which they scout their attack vectors. And I have never seen one designed specifically for midges though I have not spent time looking at all the options either.

    • @papahiker9014

Hi 8th sinner! For a diy project I looked into different gauze widths for bug netting. As it turns out there are big differences. Only the very fine no-see-um works against the midges. We used this bug net in midge conditions and they couldn't get through. But, you mileage may vary of course.

Just spent last night in the bug bivy under the Tetra Wedge pitch! First time I ever pitched it so I could use some repetition, but it worked really well. Couldn't quite close/cross the doors fully so I think a slightly longer tarp would be the ideal match (10x7ft maybe). However if I'd had the space to widen and flatten out the foot end more, that probably would've added just enough length to tuck the bivy in further and get the doors crossed. I will definitely be singing the praises of the Tetra wedge to anyone willing to talk tarp!

Did the mentioned modification and indeed the bivy easily fits now with doors closed! Discovered that the stick-on loop adhesive is too weak for that rear tie-out, so I'll either need to put the pole inside or sew the loop through with some backing material and sealant. That is one disappointment of Zpacks' tarp. It just comes with corner and halfway points, and four mid-plane points for expanding an A-frame pitch. Understandable for a company marketing to tag and toothbrush cutters. 😉
