Ooh, if that lake was Glaslyn then it's so worth a dip - cold but so refreshing! And if you get the chance you'd absolutely love a pint or two in the Red Lion in Machynlleth. It's a real Rockers treat 😍
I've just got wind about your channel, traveling down the forever UA-cam rabbit hole! lol This is a fun channel and amazing landscapes Juliet! Backpacking of a life time. Thank you for sharing your travels.
Looks like a beautiful ride. I'd love to make it across the pond to ride and camp in your country but, until then, I'll be living vicariously through you and other UA-camrs. :) A tip, and I've been tarp camping here in the US since 2008, I went back and looked at your tarp pitch and it was indeed pretty loose. It needs to be tight in all directions to keep the noise down. A regular tent would flap if it was pitched that loosely but pitching a tent loose is hard to do by design. It's a good idea to spend a decent amount of time working out pitching a tarp in the yard or park before embarking on a journey with one. It looked to me like, based on what I could see in the last video, that the areas on either side of the tires could have stood to have their own stakes. Each line or crease that can be put in the tarp via stakes and guy wires makes its own "panel" and the more "panels" there are the better the whole thing sheds wind (normally I explain that to people with picture for an aid so I hope that made sense). To be honest, I have not tried this particular pitch yet myself but I'm keen to try. I prefer a half pyramid pitch even though it means carrying at least one pole. The book "Lightweight Backpacking and Camping" edited by Ryan Jordan has a wealth of information on the topic. As do, iirc, Mike Clellands books and of course Andrew Skurkas' writings.
Theres a lovely tarp set up. it requires one tree, fold the tarp over on itself so it forms a triangle like a napkin. the corner gets tied to the tree and two pegs at the other two corners, if its windy tie lower around the tree or if not tie higher for more space inside, the bottom layer of the tarp is an extra ground sheet, the back wall is totally sealed off, its literally the tarp folded all the way in half giving great shelter, the ground sheet layed can be spruced up with leaves and such from around to make a natural matteress under neath that ground layer. It doesnt have to be tied up close to the tree either, the rope can extend and it will hold the same a few meters from the tree, its deffo good to carry ear plugs for wind, or a lecture on headphones can send anyone to sleep, the wind can drive us made on our bike tours sometimes for days and days, so headphones or earplugs can give a good nights rest while riding in the wind away from the madness. with the triangle set up you can get it nice and taught with the two pegs once the tree rope is established on the corner loop. peace.
So not a fan. We've got them dotted all over the hills around us here in Moray & they keep trying to build more down into the Cairngorms national park 😡
in Australia we only ride when its above 35degrees when there is no alternative and its worthwhile noting that it can be 5 degrees hotter on the road. All in all a big effort Juliet
I am amazed that the grass is still green with temperatures that you guys have been having, down here in Australia all the grasses would be golden brown and dried out.
Kilometers and PSI. Why not bars? When I was in the 2nd grade in the 70s we (USA) were going to switch over. The metric system is so much easier than ours.
@Shep Raynham I reckon I could've ridden all of that on my touring bike. FWIW I did ride the length of the Rhine this year on a Komoot route which had a lot of offroad. I am running Schwalbe Big Apples, mind. They're good enough for anything that's not massively technical. I'm not even particularly skilled off-road.
@Shep Raynham That made me chuckle. Nah, it's definitely a touring bike, a Surly Disk Trucker. Touring bikes don't all have skinny tyres, there are many with fat tyres.
Looks lovely & a great way to get away from civilization for a bit. I always try to remember earplugs when camping because of wind, rain, rivers, snoring or generators!
I don’t think I would like a tarp either. There are so many nice and very light tents available. Sleep is everything!😂 Nice video. The scenery is beautiful. Mountain bike or gravel bike? I like flat bars for steep fast descents. They feel more stable! Okay. I’ll take the mountain bike. A nice light weight hard tail.
Sorry Juliet. I won't be having this anti-tarp rhetoric 😂 You need more tension. Don't wrap it round the wheels. Get the tarp pegged out tight then wedge the wheels under it, then a few strategic guy lines to keep it tight. 👍
It looked like a very flappy set up when she showed it on a previous video A 3x3 DD tarp or similar could easily be made into a tarp tent shelter with a single lightweight telescopic pole or waist high piece of wood, that could be pegged down tight and still give loads of space for bike plus sleeping set up inside
What helmet is this? From the looks of it, it seems to be build to prevent bees/wasps getting stuck too near to your head and stinging you. - and it looks better than when I hot-glued pieces of fly net onto the front of my old bike helmet for that purpose.
looks a really great ride! but il take a lightweight tent. Tarps are a hopeless bit of camping kit, fun to play with in the woods where trees act as tent poles, but remember that water flows so if you are on the ground under one and it rains you will get wet anyway. Mostly in the UK there are no trees, we chopped them all down to make ships, farms and cities or they are on private land.
Not much of a concern in the UK but in America we have snakes. Not typically much of an issue unless it's cold outside, particularly in the southern states.
It's a very popular bothy with parking closeby , misused for partying. Better to camp. And more entertaining video 'how @julietelliot camps with minimum preparation'.
Well young lady I am wondering what type of tarp tent did you have was it made out of dyneema because that is extremely crinkly and loud with wind but yet it is 100% waterproof on the outside will however allow a lot of condensation on the inside so let me know which one you have curiosity let's kill the cat in this case we can't because you got too many lives ahead of you which is a good thing love the video as always
Why a tarp? Plenty of lightweight tents about. Bashas are ok in nice German pine forests where they can be perfectly strung out.... but Welsh hillsides....🤣😂🤣
I think you should invest in a proper sleeping bag since you're always cold. The likes of Western Mountaineering are expensive but warm, lightweight and pack small, highly recommend.
Matching nails - cool. Nice area to ride and weather being kind as well, thumbs up then :-) I ride my EUC, batteries are best - don't care, I laugh at hills, ah ha ha ha.
Omg my digital calculator on my bike stated there’s an uphill struggle.. imagine if this were more than going up a hill, down a hill or along a flat, on LIVE TV!! omg… commence channel. Lol!!! (Hey take a joke!!!! ;) )
That last descent looked absolutely gnarly!
There's a lot more to come, if you stick to the trail.
Ooh, if that lake was Glaslyn then it's so worth a dip - cold but so refreshing! And if you get the chance you'd absolutely love a pint or two in the Red Lion in Machynlleth. It's a real Rockers treat 😍

Well done popit, you're so inspirational! And as a proud Welsh bikepacker im loving your Welsh adventures 🙏🏻🏴
Thank you!

The scenery reminds me of Marin County, California: open, grassy hills interspersed with thick evergreen forest. Thanks for the tour.
I cycle around Elan Valley when I visit the inlaws. On the racebike I cycle on the road with some very steep bits, but the scenery is breathtaking.
It’s a lovely place!

Beautiful ride! My wife and I just completed a multi day gravel fondo in the Canadian Rockies. The scenery is a little different.
Those wind turbines those are just an amazing feat of architecture and the Beautiful I think

@@gregs7562 An awful blot on the landscape and a robbery of the taxpayer, and a complete con.
Wow it really must be dry in Wales. Great vid.

You're just too much fun Juliet! Great video, cheers!!!
Great effort- Wales and that trail look great!! 🤘🏼👍🏻🍺
Hi Juliet great- ride -I've done it twice now and definately mountainbike for me -especially the last decent -those loose slate shards are scary!
Beautiful scenery.
Hope You made it down that last hill okay.
Cheers

The Weather in the UK has been incredible I'm tempted to migrate back.
I wouldn’t bother it’s still crap
Very sensible approach to temperature/helmet. Sticking an inch of styrofoam insulation on my noggin when it's ridiculously hot is a non-starter.
Спасибо за увлекательное путешествие 😁👍
Looks beautiful. I have been in Wales years ago as a student. Maybe I should come back for cycling one day 😌💭🚴
There is a bothy just north of the road to Tefi lakes.
TBH most of that looked doable on a normal touring bike. No gravel bike needed haha.
@Shep Raynham I reckon I could've ridden all of that on my touring bike. FWIW I did ride the length of the Rhine this year on a Komoot route which had a lot of offroad. Yes , but the cycling illuminati want us to believe gravel bikes are the only bikes capable of anything.
@Shep Raynham That made me chuckle. Nah, it's definitely a touring bike, a Surly Disk Trucker. Touring bikes don't all have skinny tyres, there are many with fat tyres.
@@rule3036 Haha! Funnily enough I do see the purpose of gravel bikes. They're cool, I just don't need one and don't have the space.
Gravel bikes are just touring bikes for people who think they are too cool to use panniers.
wanted to see you put tr feet up at the end! Nice cold 1 in the hand 🤘

Was that steep dissent the ‘absolute madness’ segment (named on Komoot)?
The Garmin climb map is the WORST haha sometimes I have to force myself not to look at that screen and just take it one bit at a time!
dont know how you made it past that swim calling to you in the heat ... but well done, and thank you for another adventure by proxy.
Great series of vids ... love Wales.. its stunning 🙌

Gossamer Gear "One".. Awesome lightweight tent.

Basha poles and jungle loops and a tarp is as good as a tent.
True that, the same with Ireland. Trees were cut down to build battle ships that's so true.
Absolutely beautiful
Country side looks lovely.
May I suggest the zpack altoplex as a more comfortable alternative to the tarp:)
$675 USD?? Better be A LOT more comfortable.
good video! one question: how do you avoid the ticks?
You can’t really avoid them, you have to check for them and remove them if they get you.
Ha. Luv ya Juliet but you had to see the tarp thing coming. Still fun as ever. Ride on. Oh btw, you really do have/find the most perfect routes.
tarp no good ? im looking to do tarp bikepacking sooon
Not much of a concern in the UK but in America we have snakes. Not typically much of an issue unless it's cold outside, particularly in the southern states.
Poisonous snakes in the UK too Kenneth...the adder. Rare for anyone to get bitten by one but it does happen. Grass snake is the other type in the UK.
I have been watching for years now and enjoy your content. And like a good idiot, laugh everytime I hear your cat skreetch intro. Every time!! 🙄🙄😂😂😂🤣🤣
Tarp with hammock perfect
Maybe the right tarp with the right setup in the right place in the right weather might make you a late convert too.
Wales is beautiful! Cheers!
Can’t skimp on a tarp gotta get a good one , love wales
I leave earplugs in all my sleep systems as well as my toiletry pouch. So many things to make you crazy wind logging trucks and birds.
Tarps are great when set up well.
Scenery looks similar to Tasmania in Australia 🚴
I love hill climbs dirt or asphalt doesn't matter
So did putting air in you’re tires help ? 🤣
Is it ez to get lost without downloading the route to a Garmin?
Yes
Pudding 🥰😘
Teifi pools is my back yard, funny enough you camped like 1 mile from a Bothy with a flushing loo
