Thank you! Just enjoy watching you busy with mods all over the place. As for me, I'm super happy with the original.🤭
Thank you. I was happy with the original as well. Still can’t believe that declumper has such a big impact on taste though.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Having 2 grinders which can cover the whole spectrum and both provide great work flows, I don't see the necessity to change anything. I'm just exploring my taste preferences and trying new roasters at the moment.
@@louisazou412 you are absolutely right
@@mycoffeeshow111 Will you keep all grinders when big MAX moves in?
@@louisazou412 definitely not. I will have to sell a lot, both to get space and to finance the Max. I have 1 more video to record with Niche b4 it goes. I will also sell most of my hand grinders. As for DF83- still not sure. Maybe I should wait for some new burrs first. The plan was always to have 2 end game grinders, being like a benchmark for all future grinders I may get to test.
I ordered their shoot for the DF64 on etsy. One of the best mods I purchased.
I wanted to get it as well but too much hassle to change it on DF64
@@mycoffeeshow111 The changes you experienced with the DF83 were the same for my 64. I believe the bump in clarity comes from the grounds being able to leave before being reground. The fines became much less with my HU burrs.
@@devongreer9233 thank you very much for the info!
@@devongreer9233when you said regrind, do you mean actually regrind by burrs or by sweeper arms. Hard to believe ground bounce back inside the burrs again.
@@thamtham4924 the stock declumper does not allow the grinds to leave the grinder. Many people experience large amounts of retention because of this. The grinds cannot escape and the coffee gets reground since it cannot leave quickly enough.
I found with the same declumper on the DF64, if you bend the parts so they are more closed you get WAY less static, but it also blocks more easily and requires a bit more bellowing. I imagine there's a decent point of balance between the 2 which wouldn't be too bad to tweak on the DF83 being easier to take apart several time and test.
Thank you for the advice. It sounds very plausible. I use it with RDT now (2 sprays) and have almost zero mess anyway.
Camperista is a very nice seller, noticed the chute (df64) also had a smaller entry and choked very fast multiple times, and back to the original. I don't remember which declumper I used but I think different than the mythos (I believe that is the one you have). Changing the declumper / chute on the DF83 is much easier, no crazy taking off the stand and doing gymnastics with the DF64 ;-).
Thank you for sharing. So far I haven’t choked mine but we will see. What about the taste? Have you noticed any difference between the original and Camperista declumper?
Unfortunately, I was testing the chute / declumper and it quickly clogged and never made it to the taste test ;-(.
Hey Jack, great video as always! I have the DF64, and I don't mind the static at all. If anything, it will put the chaff away, which as far as I know adds to the bitterness(?) A problem I found with their de-clumper (which seems to be the same with the DF83) is the switching back and forth between fine and coarse brews. It's a nightmare. The filtered coffee ends up with a muddy bed no matter how much you clean, and the espresso loses its dial. I tend to choose light - medium roasted coffee for espresso, and sometimes it takes me 4 - 6 tries to dial it in to my liking. Imagine switching to coarse for some filtered coffee and back to fines, only to find out that you have to dial in again. That's a lot of "wasted" coffee. Luckily it seems like Etsy also have the same thing for the DF64 😊 I think it's time for some shopping!
Thank you very much for watching. I dedicated DF83 for pour over only and so far works fine. Otherwise, if I change to different brew methods I always purge it in between. Soon I should have 83mm HU burrs to play with 😁
Thanks for the useful content as always Jack!
Interesting observations about the taste differences... Maybe less grind exchange on a clean chute?
2 observations about the static and messiness:
1. My DF83 without the declumper is much cleaner than yours. It will maybe look like yours after two weeks of light roast grinding. Probably the climate differences 🤷
2. Looks like you forgot to use the dosing cup funnel while testing the Camparista...
Cheers!
Thank you very much. It is not that I forgot to use it, but I should not use it at all.
As for the taste- your guess is as good as mine. I always purge grinder b4 test anyway but there is always something there stuck.
I played a lot with the declumper of my df64.
I tried the original, one made by me, mythos one, no declumper. My feeling is that the declumper can increase the time coffee spends between the burrs and this will have a direct impact on how much fines will produce and will reduce the clarity of the shot. Not to mention the cases when the declumper starts to clog. It will produce inconsistent shots.
I decided to remove the declumper on the df64.
If I want to push the clarity even further I feed one or two beans of coffee at a time in the grinder using a plastic funnel instead of the lid.
I do agree with everything you said. Are you not afraid that without the declumper which seals the grinder, some coffee will end up on the electrical parts of the machine?
As for feeding slowly, that precisely how Kafatek MC5 works.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I'm using it like this for a year now and I had no issues with coffee on the electrical parts. Maybe I should open the lower part to see if it collected any coffee.
@@florinchis4051 if and when you do open it, please let me know. Thank you!
Hello Jack, nice video. I am surprised the declumper has such a big impact but since there is general agreement, I can accept it and try it. I have the DF64 (with SSP MP) and I just ordered the DF83 (with SSP HU). Your DF83 videos with Lance Hedrick's were the most informative. Now, I haven't modded my DF64 and haven't even checked if the burrs are aligned. But...I think I will buy the mods and will start tinkering with my grinders.
Thank you very much. Great setup you will have. Those mods are cheap and relatively easy to do (especially on DF83) so you can get them and check for yourself. Please let me know how you find them.
How are you liking the DF83 with SSP HU's, have you tried the stock Italmill burr to compare?
I have it and love it. You do have to RDT. One small spritz solves all these issues
Thx for the info. 2 sprays for me if I grind for pour overs. Have you noticed any difference in taste between Camperista and the original set?
Told ya DF83 isn't bad for coarser brewing! but I think the excess amount of fines (from the declumper does affect things). For immersion brewing like Aeropress or Clever dripper I didn't find it to be detrimental though.
I find with a metal dosing cup you MAY get less static. I don't like doing RDT, I now modified my stock DF83 declumper similar to yours how you trimmed the one to make a bigger center opening but I kept the other one with the one flap and just bent the flap more outwards so coffee can get through easier. I think that worked pretty well, seems like less retention left in the chute or declumper (barely anything) when I hit the bellows!
Pour over coffee bed definitely looked better for the new chute / declumper here, I'd imagine you can go finer and get better results now.
Thank you for sharing. I haven’t tried it for Areopress or Clever D yet but pour overs taste significantly better and, as you said, I can grind much finer. I also noticed that if I drop beans on rotating burrs, pour over brews even faster. I’m around setting 50 now with this coffee.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Awesome I knew technically it's better but was never sure whether hot loading the beans made a significant enough difference but it seems it does if you noticed the difference for pourover!
@@BensCoffeeRants I have done 3 or 4 pour overs since so can’t say it is conclusive ergo I am curious what other baristas think.
Cheers for the video! Maybe it needs some time to break in as well. Read some reviews about their df64 declumper and some user write that it got a lot better after some time. Will you test it out?🤙🏻
Thank you for watching. I will keep an eye on it. Overall, I like this mod. It is a very inexpensive way to improve the taste of coffee, especially for pour overs. I never thought I will enjoy V60 from DF83.
I use the same persons declumper on my df64 - RDT is a must whether you use the standard or any after market one as I agree with you that all DF grinders are static monsters :(
Have you noticed any difference in the taste b4 and after modifying?
@@mycoffeeshow111 absolutely no difference to me
@@ColdCoffeePhotography hmm. One of the viewers mentioned significant differences in taste.
Hi again Jack! Re the static. I don’t have your grinder, instead I have the Kinu m47 which I love. But it can suffer terrible static. That was until I fine sprayed a bit of water on the beans prior to grinding. Totally stopped the static. Could you not do this for your grinder?
Edit: reading the comments realised you spritz your beans!
Hi, thx for advice. I have Kinu as well. In fact it will star in my next video. Never had any static with it.
I never used RDT with DF83 b4 modification of the declumper and wanted to show the difference.
I was hoping you’d test the retention….
I thought the main reason for the chute/declumper was for the retention issue….
Yeah, that was the plan but I ended up with so much coffee dust outside it would not be fair. Besides I already modified the declumper b4 so for most who have the original one, it would be meaningless anyway. I do see your point though.
Hey Jack
I'm considering to buy the declumper as the original ones are making too much fines. May I know if you have done RDT? Coz the static shown in your video is a bit horrible.
Another question is that do you notice less fines after the mod? With the original declumper I see too many fines which make me difficult to dial in pour over. I m wondering if this mod can help to reduce the fines. Thanks
Hi,
I woud strongly recommend to get a new declumper if you want to use DF83 for pour overs. I have noticed a great improvement. For this video I haven’t used RDT but with new declumper it is a must.
Hope this helps. All the best.
@@mycoffeeshow111 thanks Jack
By new declumper you mean the one you have in the video?
www.thingiverse.com/thing:5831819
Do you think if this one would work as I have found this from the Internet.
Thanks.
Are you sure it's the declumper that changed the tasting notes and maybe more that the burrs need more seasoning?
It seems strange to me that changing the declumper would do anything other than it's job, to remove clumps. If you are doing RDT and then WDT I'm genuinely interested if it's a placebo or the burrs.
A lot of people have been saying the declumper makes a difference due to the clogging causing regrinding ie more fines
@@RavenSWE I see. That makes sense.
I was as surprised as you but I genuinely tasted the difference. It was the same last time when I modified the original declumper. It is not practical to keep moving back and forth to check if there is any real difference. Instead I ask everyone who did it. So far more people claim that there is a noticeable taste difference.
What is your most desired machine or grinder right now if you had the money?
Well I really have everything I need and some. Flat Max is coming in May. I would really love to play with Leva X machine and Londinium . As for grinders- I want them all but Nautilus would look great on the countertop.
@@mycoffeeshow111 It would be so awesome if you got a lever machine
Is this the same Camperista declumper on Etsy for the DF64?
It would have to be a different size for DF64 but yes, they do have it as well. I have never bothered to replace it though, as it is too much hassle with opening DF64.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I took a look inside the DF83 today and it wasn’t so hard to take apart, but the declumpers are flimsy plastic as is the chute itself. They seem to have redesigned the DF83 as it’s easier to remove the chute than how owners of the DF64 describe theirs. My chute was actually broken. I’ve ordered the version of yours for the DF83 solely as I believe it will be better made, if not necessarily improving the grind. My main issue with the DF83 is that I get major channeling, something I never got with my Ceado E37S.
@@docfink you are right. Df64 is much trickier to replace the declumper.
Hopefully the new chute will help with your problem. Tbh I never had any complaints about espresso performance myself, only about pour overs.
@@docfink Make sure you’re not dropping in the beans as it’s grinding. Load it up first, then power on.
why dont you use RDT?
When I first got DF83 I didn’t need to do it. Since I started with modifications I do use it but I wanted to show you the difference. Tbh I wasn’t expecting that much of a mess. I just had a pour over with April brewer, 2 sprays of water and almost 0 static.
@@mycoffeeshow111 ah ok thanks
my df83 should come this or next week
@@cloudconnected7008 congratulations. You should be very happy with it.
@@mycoffeeshow111 i hope so. shouldt i buy the new chute and declumber for better retention?
@@cloudconnected7008 wait and see how you like it first. I’m sure there will be more declumper/chute models available soon.
