  • Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a faulty blood pressure monitor purchased from eBay.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

Hey Vince. As a physician, I can tell you that wrist BP monitors are not recommended for patient use generally due to them being inaccurate as compared to the arm ones. You should use it on your left wrist when possible as you already have, so that's good. However, you also need to have the wrist and arm positioned at the same height as your heart for better accuracy. Also, any arm movements will affect the readings by quite a bit. Majority of the time, they give higher readings than what your pressures really might be at. Good fix! Though, I won't recommend using this to measure your blood pressure routinely unless you can get the technique accurately to perfection without moving your arm and at the same level as your heart. Also, pulses are normal between 60-100, though in athletes it can be normal even in the 50s. But you did know your normal BP readings, which is great!
PS: May be you can get started on them ventilators next ;).

@@FlameBunny No, he is using it correctly, the heartbeat is likely contact pressure detected and there are no main arteries the other side of wrist so any result would be incoherent at best. The cuff is pushing the whole thing in to create a greater pressure than the blood pressure which is why these machines if made well can be good but Chinesium grade ones are not very trustworthy. When done the old way, you inflate and listen in to the arteries usually under the cuff edge on the inside of the elbow.

@TheWizard22UK There are several reasons that might be the case and it would be best for you and your doctor to figure out among yourselves. At the top of my head here are some possibilities:
      1) Inaccurate calibration of the device - I generally ask my patients to bring their cuff into the clinic to double-check their accuracy with the clinic monitors or my manual check. This is quite common.
      2) You may have something called 'White Coat Hypertension' if that's your only machine at home. Essentially, it just means that your pressures in the clinic or hospital are measured higher than at home or other places. I trust that since your doctor gave that advise he or she is likely quite well-versed in ruling this out and may already have.
      3) Some medications can cause lower blood pressure at times than other times and you may be measuring at times when the pressure is lowered.
      4) You may have vasoconstriction or peripheral vascular disease or other vascular issues beyond the artery running through the arm and it may not show accurate readings. Despite having this, if deemed to be minor and without symptoms, it may not be investigated. You could try your other hand in this case.
Without knowing the medical history, seeing the patient in person and checking the cuff in person, it's had to pinpoint the reason and likely your doctor can answer this question as he or she has this information.

Should I have my fingers outstretched like on the illustration on my device or can I leave them loose. Then the pressure against my tendons curls them in. The result is higher with fingers loose than with fingers outstretched.

8:08 this a solenoid that realizes de air pressure in the end.
The way it works is: It stats to blows air until a defined pressure is reached, the pressure is read by that black sensor, soldered on the board.
Then the solenoid starts to release some of the air pressure, and the sensor starts to read the pulse. The pulse is read by the different pressure it creates when the blood travels.
The high and low blood pressure is redden when the pulse is detected and not detected anymore by a specific pressure .
    Great video sir :)

That doesn't seem great - does it .... Hope, I'm hoping that it's a dodgy machine....let me just check my pulse a minute to see if it is that high.". I'm so sorry but the surprise in your voice at that exact moment was priceless. I was in tears from laughing so hard. After checking your pulse with your watch, you found it was in the nineties. Then you triple checked it comparing your wife readings, which by the way resembled a marathon racer, against yours and it was consistent. To weld plastics like that they use a layer of brown teflon (tape) on the heated elements which pinch the plastic to weld together. This makes the plastic melt together without burning or sticking to the heated elements. So a bit of brown teflon tape on the tip of a clothes iron, a plate of metal also with teflon to put underneath, and you would probably get a neat, factory looking, weld.

Back in the day, you did it by 10 secs, if it came out high or irregular, you did a 15 secs with the ten secs times'd by six, the 15 secs times by 4 and if that still came in high or irregular you did a full half minute marking each one interval measurement /4 or /6 or /2 with abnormal or worrisome results in red for monitoring. When I was in Southampton after my triple bypass, I beat the blood pressure machine every time, you can "hear" your systolic and dystolic as the machine compresses and releases and I said to the nurse every time the systolic came up then said again when the dystolic faded. I had to show a poor student how to use the stethoscope and spigometer as everyone relied on machines these days and I was drilling the students on pharmacology the same way I was drilled as a student, I even worked local to you Mr V being in charge of a ward over at the old Abbot's Langley hospital or over the road in Leavesden Asylum as I was psych trained and what a creepy ol' place Leavesden was too.

If this thing is actually measuring correctly, that would suggest you have Grade 1 Hypertension. I’d suggest getting that checked out by either a certified armband model, or (preferrably) by a doctor.
As a side note, a device that monitors or just generally measures blood pressure is called a “Sphygmomanometer”, which is a combination of a Greek word and a scientific word:
“Sphygmo-” comes from the Greek word “sphygmos”, which means “pulse”.
    “-manometer” means “pressure meter”.
So “Sphygmomanometer” literally means “pulse-pressure meter”.
From what I’ve heard from my doctor and cross-referenced on Wikipedia, the method for measuring blood pressure is by using a wrap-around balloon and filling it with air while listening for blood flow with a stethoscope.
The first point (systolic pressure) is taken the moment the doctor starts hearing a “whooshing” sound (or a pounding sound), which is the turbulent flow of blood squeezing through the currently mostly occluded artery.
The second point (diastolic pressure) is taken when that “whooshing” sound (or pounding sound) stops (indicating the artery is no longer sufficiently occluded to produce the sound).
Also, the size of the “balloon” is important, as too small would yield too high a pressure, and too large would yield too low a pressure.
Our blood pressure is one of our four main vital signs, and is of clinical significance:
Too high a pressure could lead to internal bleedings (as the arteries/arterioles/capillaries are *NOT* capable of handling these pressures for extended periods).
Too low a pressure means poor perfusion of blood (keeping blood from passing through the tiny capillaries, especially near our extremities, and especially dangerous if it affects our vital organs).
Hypertension could lead to horrible things like aneurysms (if they burst, you could literally bleed to death!) and stroke (from sudden rupture of a cerebral aneurysm), and while Grade 1 is not an immediate threat, it could grow into one.
If your blood pressure turns out to be normal, then the skies are clear. And the normal level is between 120-129 over 80-84, with the optimal level slightly under 120 over 80 (I’d say minimum 110 over 75).
So, as a subscriber, I feel compelled to send a message on behalf of all your subscribers: *Get your blood pressure checked!*

If the size of the balloon is important then maybe him reducing the size by melting it could account for it reading higher than it should?

Maybe use the device to test your relaxation method. Get someone else to press the button and dont even look at the device when its working. Good fix. I tried mending a camp shower bag with melting but the water pressure was too high and a leak returned quite quickly. I expect with this machine, the pressure isnt there for long enough to cause a return of the leak. Our doctor used to say blood pressure is different for everyone and that to test it, you need to be in bed and have the machine run the moment you wake up. So any high readings you get when using one during the day are not your resting heart rate etc and cant be relied upon.

Vince: There are repair kits for leaking PVC, sold especially for blow up beds. Amazon sells a few. Holes on a seam are a challenge. For PVC, you can repair it with PVC Pipe Cement. That is made by dissolving the PVC plastic in solvents. The solvent mix is THF (tetrahydrofuran), DMF (dimethylformamide) and cyclohexanone. Now they try to replace the expensive cyclohexanone with cheap MEK (methylethylketone) but the original mix works best. At one point you could get the solvent mix to refresh your dried up cement but now they prefer that you throw out as much as possible so they won't supply the solvents. All repairs on a blown shell are challenging. The air pressure tends to open up the patch. Collect a store of flexible PVC film for these repairs and use the cement to cement a patch down.

Wrap the area with tinfoil then use the tip of your iron to seal a semi circle around the area, also changing the volume of the balloon will likely throw it out the calibration. The silver rectangle is a solenoid valve to release the pressure.

  • @thomasesr
    @thomasesr 4 роки тому +2

The RL component is a solenoid valve RL probably stands for Relay. This valve closes whenever there is power on it so it prevents the air from escaping thus inflating the balloon. When the power goes off it opens and lets the air out, deflating the balloon.

Hello there, I own one of those device and, if used correctly they are, for the price, quite precise. The readings should be done with the arm not resting down (on leg or table or whatever) but the machine has to be at the hight of the heart (arm close to the breast). The last measures were done with the wirst at least 20 cm down the heart. For my experience it makes difference. Wishing you my best i suggest a better reading (with a professional machine) and a medical consult if pressure gets high. By the way i had my minimal at 110 for a while! I had to take pills!

With regard to the components inside, you identified the motor and air pump and the pressure sensor but the tubular white thing located over the vent holes in the case is a one-way valve to allow air into the pump but not back out again. The square metal thing marked as RL on the PCB is a solenoid operated release valve to slowly reduce the pressure in the cuff in order for the measurement to be made. Goob luck with you healthy diet, although you should really see your GP for an accurate analysis of your health!

Black square thing: pressure sensor, analog type. Other big thing: solenoid valve. The whit cylinder lets slowly escape the air on a constant rate. How it works: balloon gets inflated until pressure reached. The white cylinder lets slowly the air escape. Every heartbeat the pressure varies ever so slightly. The difference between some heaps is calculated to get the blood pressure. When measurement is finished the solenoid releases the remaining air.

I have always wondered what Mrs Vince looks like, I imagine her as somewhat distraught, frazzled hair with frustration as Mr V fixes his way round Electronics Mountain in the garden or navigates Switch glen in the spare room and I suspect the kids all hide their toys as they become suspiciously broken whilst at school with a cheery "Don't worry kids, I can fix it..." Years ago, the Chinese and Taiwanese all had a problem with e-waste, not now since they erected a shrine to Mr V, "in Vince we trust" they say every day, the patron saint of broken things everywhere...

Look into atherosclerosis. The food you eat regularly will cause and issue with blood pressure (cholestorol+sugar). Also not exercising regularly. It is very possible to have a bp like that since you were probably a bit excited by making this video. Some people have a very overactive nervous system and get high bp and high pulse very easily.

Ideally, to seal rubber you would need to place it between 2 hotplates and put pressure on it. I remember my father had tire fixer that worked that way. It was back in Ukraine, I am not sure of they have such things nowadays.

You were doing it incorrectly. Wrist position is crucial when using this type of gauge. You need to sit at a desk, hold your back straight, elbow on the desk and hold your wrist at heart level. Do not move your arm at all. Then it will measure OK. Lower than heart = higher reading, higher = lower reading. Even small movements and placement errors affects it a lot. Nice video none the less!

  • @Poisonjam7
    @Poisonjam7 4 роки тому

Wrist monitors are notoriously inaccurate, so I wouldn’t be too worried about that high reading. They always tend to run high for me too.
A while back when these things first started popping up all the clinics switched over to them, but they soon found out they’re unreliable and now most places have switched back to arm machines or the good old fashioned manual pump ones.

Nice fix! another one where I was yelling at the computer... You DO engage the viewer, which is good.... Heh heh!
I'm guessing if you sat in a proper chair, turned off the camera, did a little deep breathing, the numbers would come down.... There's always some level of "attention" shall we say, with the camera on, and you're trying not to sound stupid, or say the wrong thing, and stick to your "script" to some degree, and say what you wanna say... Which is all stressful, and that will elevate the heart rate and bp....
There is actual research, sometimes called "white coat syndrome", where the anxiety of being in the doctor's office, raises your numbers. You can get a machine for your home, that will give a printout. If your doctor/cardiologist is any good, they will take that into account, if you bring in 15 slips from home and say look, at home, my BP is fine... So, it's not a big leap, to say okay, the anxiety of working with the camera on, could cause a rise in those numbers....
The parts inside, the pump pumps it up... and then something has to release the air very slowly, so that the sensors can pick up where the diastolic and where the systolic is.... That's how it gets those numbers...
You might try moving it around on your wrist also, just getting the sensor properly positioned could make a big difference.... If the sensor is having trouble picking up your pulse, both numbers would be higher....
Anyways, I could bore you with heart nonsense all day. After you get your first stent put it, you get very very interested in what those numbers are telling you... hahahaha! Great job on the fix.

  • @dodgydruid
    @dodgydruid 4 роки тому

I'm thinking if you are consistently pulling 100bpm, you really need to see a doctor as leaving it will only make matters worse, hypertension, tachycardia, two things not good to ignore and it could be a simple thing like needing a blood pressure tablet once a day for a bit or something to pull your heart rate down. Mine without tablets is 120bpm hence being put onto tachycardia tablets and since then my blood pressure dropped into quite good results, less strain on the heart.
