- Sometimes you find yourself in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica, training jiu jitsu and spending time with close friends. These are some of my favorite trips, and I always enjoy sitting down and picking the brains of experts in their fields. As usual, we covered much more than just jiu jitsu, as these conversations often span life in general, and business. We definitely spent some time unpacking and discussing the recent multi-million dollar injury award to a white belt jiu jitsu student, and the potential impact on jiu jitsu academies worldwide.
Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the acadamy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In 1997 the school moved to the Pacific Palisades where Henry trained and assisted main Instructor Luis Heredia and also participated and trained in all of the classes taught by Rickson. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor.
Dan Hart is a Henry Akins blackbelt and owner of Alpha BJJ in Woodstock, IL. In addition to coaching both at his academy and seminars all over the world he is also an accomplished restauranteur and entrepreneur.

Very fascinating interview 👍
Henry Akins is such a great and calm speaker!
Thoughtful, too!
BJJ is pride crushing.
Being humbled and accepting it without resentment and having consistent humility is a healthy way to live.
Being gracious and having gratitude - valuable life lessons.
Very well said. 👋 🤛
Andy, could you get Maynard on? That would be awesome.
At a glance I thought the guy in the middle was wearing just a speedo
Hello Andy Snot Rocket at 2:30
Have a great weekend everyone
I wish my Friday was there, and would love to say I rolled with Maynard
Jerome, AZ and wine. Hmmmm. Are you hanging out with Maynard? I have been to his tasting room in Jerome. That place is so cool. My mom lives on the other side of the mountain in Prescott Valley so when we are in town we try to hit up Jerome. Maynard is an interesting guy. Tool and APC are in regular rotation on my classic iPod.
Did you guys get to surf in Costa Rica? I am envious of your location this week. Great show today.
Alright Andy guest idea for the podcast get Maynard on here that be a sick podcast! 🤘🤘🤘
Speaking of the accident, a lot of kids nowadays don't properly eat. They don't get enough calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D, etc. Their bones are weaker. A lot of guys don't care until they start BJJ or weight lifting. And, this guy was a white belt. I remember when I first met my wife, her son was 14. He lived with his dad, but was absent a lot. Anyway, the kid had poor eating habits. New mall opens up and has this huge skate park. Tim was not even there for 20 minutes and breaks his leg. He was on the beginner ramp. Like 4 feet high. He rolls down, loses his balance, posts one leg out to catch himself and popped his Tibia.
😅
Nice
