So I met the voice actor of Leo (the one in the glasses) years ago, and I believe he said that they would have competitions to see who could be most offensive.
The 2000's were a different dimension not just a different time. I miss it.

It’s a myth that the show flopped in Japan as Ghost Stories gets re-aired every year on TV in Japan and had really good viewership. English dub was just a solid parody on the original.
Yeah I think Steven Foster meant the Original Ghost Stories dub, not the original Japanese version but it got misconstrued whether it be by him or others, but still it went from what would’ve probably been a forgotten about anime to a very memorable one.
Yea i hate that myth is still being pushed. I plan to watch the japanese soon then dub after since its the abridged lol.

Also, a litte known company called ADV got the rights for ghost stories, or ghost at school for those outside of the west. They had 4 rules:
1. Don't change the name of the characters
2. Don't change the names of the spirits
3. Don't change the names of the spells.
4. MAKE IT SELL!
The dub creators really took the piss outta rule 4. This is why the dub is not only the best dub ever, but also why the english dub sold and was so popuplar in the west.
Edit: the English dub came out in 2005.
The show actually has a story. It is an episodic horror series about a group of kids exorcising ghosts at their school (think like goosebumps meets scooby doo).
The original series was created to be part of a multimedia franchise, was pretty popular on airing, but not as popular as expected. The right owners basically told the localisation team "Stuff to not change: the character names, the ghost names, the exorcism parts. Stuff to change: Anything you believe will make it sell well".
And history was made.
Yeah it has a story actually. I got the DVD and each episode has a thing where a spooky ghost appears to haunt them/try to kill them and they have to devise ways to beat them and escape.

I heard somewhere that the voice actors were actually drunk when recording some of the dialogues for Ghost Stories-

This whole anime is like that. Basically in Japan they spent all this money on it and promoting it and such, but then it did really poorly. So it was basically thought to be worthless, and eventually they sold the rights to dub it for fairly cheap, and the only rules were that the basic story and names of major characters and ghosts had to remain intact, otherwise they were allowed to do whatever they wanted.
My biggest recommendation would be to react to the whole anime (it's only 20 episodes total), because seriously the whole thing is golden.
This was originally a Horror Genre Anime. It didn't do well in Japan, though the books it is based on did, so the Dub company basically got it for free with a bunch of other things they really wanted.
They were told they couldn't change the names of characters, they couldn't change the ending because it was based on Japanese Ghost lore, and it had to tell the story, but they could do what they wanted to make it more interesting to the audience.
The studio proceeded to let the voice actors adlib most of the lines. This was a side project, not something scheduled regularly, so whichever actor got to a scene first set the tone and the jokes, and then the other actor had to come up with something that matched, all while telling the barebones of the original story.
This turned the Genre into Dark Humor Comedy from Horror.

So there actually two dubs. The same actors did a normal dub to begin with, but it was not very good. The original story has a lot of cultural stuff that needs not just translation, but also explanation. So after watching the first dub the company did not like the result, they got the greenlight to do whatever needed to be done to make the show watchable, cue a lot of edgy humor and improv. The result was much better so that's what got released.

This show was originally in Japanese and it was a horror. The show flopped and as they were going to dub it they just hired a bunch of voice actors and told them to say what ever they want but they had to say with the story line. The voice actors decide they would see how far they could go with the “jokes” and this was the final product.
Wrong. The japanese did great, it was the first english dub that failed.

Pretty much, Ghost Stories did so poorly in Japan, they gave the anime away and told them to do whatever they wanted with the dub. Everything you hear is the English Dub.
