Once you are inside the oil pan and transmission pan there are orings for the gear shaft that is wise to change: it will prevent the motor oil and the gear oil to mix when these orings will fail (and they will). The only thing is that I don't remember if it is an engine out work.
I’ve always wanted a 308 but the maintenance costs scare me. This video is a great example of how there’s nothing easy about even basic repairs. But I still want one 😂
FWIW, you should probably also change the transfer case oil. That's on the driver side of the motor, big gears that move the power from the crank to the diff.
A buddy ran LED light strips (like under cabinet lights) on the ledge of his 4 post lift tread plates to light up everything under the car. Works great and you rarely need a flashlight to see anything.
As a current owner of a gtsi not only is the oil pan gasket etc true but the V8 in yer back at 5k + rpm has a visceral thrill worth the price of admission.
I ran across you're channel accidentally a couple weeks ago it's a pleasure to see something other than C8 Corvettes there everywhere it's like a assho!e everybody has one
The idea of fixing your cars that you sell and showing it is pretty brilliant. People can know what you did before they buy them. I would to be in a position to buy one but I do sure enjoy watching you guys wrenching on them.
It's like you're getting a free PPI, that you can visually observe, on an exotic car. It shows transparency, on the dealers behalf, to potential buyers.
Great video. The dipstick really make the oil pan on the 308 a huge pain. Would have been good to have done the shifter seals while you were in there. The shift seals are a known leaker for sure. Also they make an updated baffle system for the oil pan that prevents starvation under cornering, so that would have been a good upgrade with the pan off since the pan is such a huge pain to remove. The pan on my 77 GTB is weeping a bit and I have been holding off on doing that job since I don’t have a lift. Really not looking forward to it. Btw be sure to check the oil as per the manual. Different year 308s have different procedures as there were different dipsticks. The oil is always meant to be checked hot but depending on year it’s either hot immediately after shutdown or 15 min after shutdown the difference is drain back from the filter. And the dipsticks are marked differently depending on the procedure. Definitely a good thing to check.
Great job! FYI, manual for a 4 valve calls for 10l (but rarely takes that much)oil Sint2000 sae10w50 originally but Mobil is a good choice! You could also use a Baldwin 253 oil filter which is red. Not to criticize but using a screw driver to pry the pans off is dicey as metal on metal fine scratches on the mating surfaces can create leaks! Otherwise great work.
Love the vids, saw your old video on the oasis cars and coffee, why did they stop it, looks like the perfect spot for it. I always question that every time I pass
Yep, need to remove the dipstick tube (it's just a tube with swage fitting that threads on from the outside) *before* removing the oil pan cover. Then reinstall after the cover goes back on. Not a great design by Ferrari (one of many quirks on the 308). By the way, the engine castings on these cars are very porous, and the lower sumps and covers will sweat oil. You will still see some oil down there even with all new gaskets. Not a big deal. Some people go crazy trying to fix leaks but it's often pointless.
We both uttered “bastards” at the same time when you noticed the second drain plug was a different size. lol Looking forward to next week to see her in person. Is Fred coming in?
You did all that but didn’t do the shift shaft seal on the front and in between the engine / trans. It is where most leaks come from on the 308’s, especially off the front of the block. I know you guys don’t normally do these cars but you missed the best while you’re in there.
If you like this car, then you really need to try a 328. Over 1400 engineering changes from the 308. Lightweight, superb drivers car. Really fun. Explains their current market value. I love a 348 with a Capristo exhaust, but its almost 500 lbs heavier than the 328.
It's a good thing that car is so beautiful, otherwise she would have been kicked to the curb long ago. Temperamental, high drama, stereotypical Italian sportscar from the 1980s.
Can’t get enough of this 308 content! Looked like a pita operation with lift required; although not overly complicated just time consuming.
Yeah it was just frustrating but not super complex
Yeah, we need more 308 content!

Pretty much

Yeah
The "Green Glover" strikes again! Good video to watch on this rainy day👍🏼
Thanks 👍
Thank you for finally wearing safety glasses. 😂 You guys should invest in a dry ice sprayer for cleaning the underside of these older cars.
Those things are really expensive. We want one bad but it's hard to justify the price
Such a beautiful car, easily in my top 5 favorites. I was at a show today and a nice lady let me sit in her 308. Now I want one 😀
Yes indeed
A buddy ran LED light strips (like under cabinet lights) on the ledge of his 4 post lift tread plates to light up everything under the car. Works great and you rarely need a flashlight to see anything.
Nice

Haha yup
That looked like a pain in the ass to do. I like the drill pump. Never seen that before.
It's pretty handy

Thanks! Plus we just enjoy doing the videos! It's fun
The Highs and Lows of a Comprehensive 308 Oil change 👍

Such a great old car❤
Yup
The dead battery at end was chefs kiss 👌
Lol right? Ugh

Great stuff !!!
Thanks!

I always question that every time I pass
It was getting way too big
Did you use any zinc additives for the flat tappets? I’m not sure about zinc content in Mobil 1..🤔
No
When he drained the oil if he took off the oil filter it would have drained faster. Why did he wait until the end to change the oil filter.
Does it really matter?
And oil level is checked after warming up the engine, stop engine, wait 10 min.....now you have the correct level.
Yeah

😍😍😍😍😍😍 what will be its price … il love this model
It's actually already sold
@@normalguysupercar price ???
We both uttered “bastards” at the same time when you noticed the second drain plug was a different size. lol Looking forward to next week to see her in person. Is Fred coming in?
Haha
And now we know why an oil change on a Ferrari costs $1000! 👍
Well normally you wouldn't have to change the oil pan gasket
I think it's a "D" ring. Not sure either.
Definitely not a d-ring, those are in trailers to hold down stuff.
@@normalguysupercar different type. This is used to hold pins in place.
Should have called the other rubber hose Josh to sort it out, much quacking......lol
Lol yup

Ah well too late now
It’s an engine out job if I’m honest.
Wow Dan that 308 oil pan was a bitch to remove!
Yes it was
There are times when I actually say aloud, “Poor Dan.” lol
Haha
10:32 engine out job
Eh
@@normalguysupercargood job better than it was ✌🏻

Yeah I want to
I see a market for under hood safety helmets 🙃
Lol
But did you use a metric crescent wrench? 🤣🤣😂🤣
Lol
It's a good thing that car is so beautiful, otherwise she would have been kicked to the curb long ago. Temperamental, high drama, stereotypical Italian sportscar from the 1980s.
Yeah you're not wrong
I love these cars. But would be scared to own one.
Na they are fun
have to laugh you had the speedster in the background which only took a couple of hrs to do the same job
Right?
That’s why gaskets are done during the engine out major!!
Yup
