  • Hi Everyone! This is our oil change video for our 1985 Ferrari 308 GTS QV Euro. It is really a pretty straightforward process and one of the easiest cars in the garage. Ferrari 308s are pretty easy to maintain and this is a task everyone can do 😉. I walk you through all the steps 😊.

    If you have any questions or comments (or if I left anything out), please leave them below. Always consult your Owner’s Manual/Shop Manual to verify all steps and values.
    The parts used are:
    • Oil Filter UFI 2316202
    • Case drain plug washer: 10275011 (Cu) 22X27mm
    You’ll need:
    • Oil Filter Wrench
    • 12mm Hex
    • Ratchet or Break-Over bar
    • Torque Wrench
    • Drain Pans
    Torque Values:
    • Case Drain Plug: 26 Ft-Lbs
    • Oil Filter: 24-26NM or 17-19 Ft-Lbs
    The oil I use is Valvoline Racing 20W50, but use what is specified by your owners manual.

      Yea! I think of all the older sort of "classic" Ferraris, the 308 is in the sweet spot of having all the classic-ey goodness but with the lowest maintenance bills. It is also pretty reliable and driveable. You might want one if we had a chance to go for a ride. Very different than P-Cars... We are planning the review so hope to get that out soon. Thanks! f

    Oh the memories, In 1984 or so I was friends with a guy(Jay Braffett) that had a 1980 Ferrari 308 GTS, He took it to the dealer in 1983 to have a factory service done and they gave him a 911 turbo as a loaner car...imagine that a 911 turbo loaner, lol. Anyway, he fell in love with the Porsche and ended up trading his Ferrari for a Lola T 300 Formula 5000 race car. The eighties were a wonderful time to be a sports car owner, lol.

      Funny story... when I picked up my QV, I'd randomly flicked the heater switch, but didn't notice the light come. About the time of final departure, I noticed the orange indicator light and kind of starting freaking out... "what is that!?!?!" Took me a few minutes of google to realize it didn't mean the engine was about to catch fire. ;)
      OH - and yes, I've gotten questions on the right louver from friends... "what's that for, exactly?" I told them it was so I could clean the window. They seemed satisfied. ;)
      EDIT: (Opps, i left this comment on the wrong video!) Sorry about that ;)

    Thanks for the dipstick trick. As a car-novice, I find it very hard to read the correct oil level on my 328. They advise you to check it every 800km (500mls) and when I do, it always seems fine looking at the stick. The first yeah I got it, I drove till I got oil pressure loss in right turns, so when I checked on forums, it was clear I had not enough oil. The guy I bought it from (professional, working on old sportscars) told me, the car didn't loose and fluid. Well he was not wrong, considering the previous owner only drove it around 1000km/year. I already did 8.000 since I got it.

    Great how you take time to show & tell this oil service. new to your channel, I am dreaming about a 328GTS. As for annealing brass / copper etc. I use molten salt,,,, you can see how to set this up on reloading vids using a lead melting pot and temp sender with a blend of salts (never table salt). Anyhow enjoy your sailboat, I live part of the year on mine.... isn't it amazing how boat designers cram into tiny places anything that needs to be serviced !!!

      They really are neat cars! Our issues were mostly from improper maintenance (of lack of) from previous owners. But a well sorted 308 is actually quite reliable and an absolute pleasure to drive. Good luck in your search! F

    Great job Franny. It's great to have a Ferrari in the collection, and not have the exorbitant maintenance costs by being a skilled DIY'er. BTW, I'm always impressed how you can work on the cars in a nice sweater, and pearl necklace and stay so clean. That's a sweet ride for sure ... I'm sure Tom Selleck would agree! :)

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 років тому +1

      Thanks! Poor Tom could barely fit into the car! He is like 6'4". They had to hollow out the seat for him and almost all driving was done with the top off. I have seen a photo of him in a Pcar-928 which was a better fit, but harder to film I suppose. Magnum is a great show with lots of Ferrari action. I've even seen 356s from time to time :) The 308 is a really fun car and not bad at all to maintain. We hope to have our review on the car out soon :) Franny

    • @vezinam58
      @vezinam58 7 років тому +1

      Yeah, Tom's head was always sticking out of the top of the car. BTW, when he was ready to call it quits as Magnum P.I., he did 1 more season so the cast members would have a job while planning their futures. The network gave him a bonus for doing the extra season. He used the money to buy his Co-Stars each a Porsche 928! He's genuinely a nice guy.

    Love the needed parts/tools breakdown in these videos. I noticed that with the Porsche oil change you got a drain plug with a magnet in it for replacement. Any reason you didnt do that with the Ferrari as well? I believe thats a common sense upgrade for any vehicle for the Engine and Transmission that don't already have them.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 років тому +1

      Hi Tim, Yeah, that would be really good for this car too... I didn't see on on the pats site. I'll have to look a little harder for that. Ya know, funny... The reason I got the plug was to get the correct washer. I couldn't fine it by itself anywhere. Once I had it I measured it and won't have to worry about that again. The replacement plug wasn't as nice as the original either... Thanks! Franny

    That 308 is immaculate. Is that the original Red from the factory? Red usually oxidizes and fades out over time. Glad it’s garage kept. Saw another video of a repainted 308GTB and was excellent but was darker and more wine color and not the same “firey red” as that original.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  3 роки тому

      We have had someone analyze the paint. It is original in parts, but it seems to be one part and two parts depending on where you are looking. So, the short answer is yes, original color but resprayed to match its original color.

      Hi Franny - Oh yes, I've been a member of F-Chat for a few years now.... taking in all the information I could. Definitely a great site. As fate would have it, my offer on an '85 Euro (found on F-chat) was accepted this morning - hoping to pick up the car this week. I'm currently swinging between "I can't wait!!!" and "oh my word, am I really about to write this check?" ;)

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 років тому

      Oh My! Congrats!! That is awesome. You'll love the Euro! Very different from the US spec. I'd love to see some photos. Will you post on F-Chat when you collect it? Does it have much to do to get sorted? Wow, how exciting! Franny

    • @thorn-
      @thorn- 7 років тому

      The Euro has been my first choice, due to the gearing ratios and other factors - and I was hoping for an 84-85 to be sure it had the proper rust protection that earlier models lacked - so quite simply, I'm thrilled that it's (nearly) worked out. It looks very well-sorted mechanically; the 2 previous owners were also F-chat members and enthusiastic about keeping it maintained (vs a flipper, who wouldn't care). I think the things I've identified as needing replacement amount to literally $55 in parts and perhaps a hour with a screwdriver. Anything beyond that is just cosmetics; I may have the front grills anodized black, instead of the factory red. It also lacks the rear spoiler. I want to add one... my son is saying "Dude. Leave it the way it is."
      I may also yank out the modern stereo and replace it with something vintage. Maybe an '80's Alpine CD player. ;)
      The price is bordering at the edge of my comfort zone, but the market is as it is... sadly we aren't in 2013 anymore, when these cars were selling at 1/2 the price. But I've taken the advice of so many other owners - a low-end priced Ferrari is priced low for a reason (lack of care - and YOU will be paying for it). Seeing the various posts the previous owners have made (updating the suspension, brakes, nouvalari exhaust, recent engine seals, etc) - I feel good knowing this car has been quite loved. :)
      But my first DYI will eventually be an oil change... and your vid has definitely shown me EXACTLY the perfect way to proceed. :)
      EDIT: oh, pics will be shown! ;)

    Current motor oils have had the zinc removed. Do you have to add a zinc additive to the oil when you do an oil change?
    Also, I use a teflon washer instead of a copper crush washer. It doesn't need to be as strongly tightened to get a good seal, and it doesn't stress the threads in the aluminum.

    Is it because it is an old engine and it may burn or leak oil the reason why you fill it a little past the max?
    Also is that a special filter for that engine or is it common? Do you have to special order it?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 років тому +2

      Yeah, kinda both. It was just a smidgen over. I hear-tell that folks who track their 308s over fill a Qt to prevent starvation in hard corning. It doesn't burn a lot of oil by any means, but you do want to monitor it.
      The filter is "OEM" and a little hard to get. Also what you would need for concours. Baldwin also makes a good filter (they are orange). I would only use one of the two. I think we got the filters and plug/washer from AWItalian. Love those guys. They have always gone the extra mile for us :) Thanks for the great questions :) Franny

    Looks like an easy one Franny. Can you explain how to re-anneal the crush washer?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 років тому +1

      Hi Chuck, It is pretty simple, but you want to first take the old washer and put it on a stone and get both sides flat and nick free. Then you can hang it over a old screw driver or wire and use a mapp gas torch (like what you use to sweat copper pipe) and get the washer hot enough to glow red/orange. For Copper, I believe you can then dunk it in water so it doesn't oxidize. Copper isn't like steel so quenching won't harden it. Just make sure you finally have a smooth, flat surface both sides. It may have an indentation from the case or the plug that should be wet sanded smooth. A new washer is less than a dollar and you can get them in bulk for less. It seems a bit easier to just buy a bunch and put them in your spare parts bin :) Franny

      Our QV runs about 90deg C when good and warm... High temps can mean a failing thermostat, or blockage in the cooling system or low coolant. When was the last time the cooling system was flushed? Also, air in the cooling system can cause local hot spots. Does turning on the heat help? Franny

    Franny, why does your 308 crank so long before starting?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  3 роки тому

      How long should it take? It seems to start within about 5sec cold and perhaps a tad longer warm. Also, I think if you drove it several times a week it might be a little quicker to start?

      AutohausAZ They have access to lots of parts from different sources. We went through the order over the phone together, but I will circle back about some of these parts.

      Not that many! Maybe 1500? It was a little past a year though. I use Dino on this and the 3.2 Carrera so it always comes out pretty black. F

    why not synthetic oil?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  6 років тому +1

      Hi James, I try not to get into oil discussions ;) I use that Valvoline Racing because of its zinc content and it is easily sourced. I know folks on the forums use synthetic with good results.
