One of the best of the year [very different films but it reminded me of Sorry To Bother You in that there's no other film like it around and it's not like any other film around]. It's not Four Lions but that's because it's a different kind of story to Four Lions. Expecting Chris Morris to just do Four Lions again is idiotic
It's a very Chris Morris film. If you generally find the tragedy of human ambition funny you might like this. It's the first film in a long time to have kept my attention from start to finish.
Seen it twice. Once with a Chris Morris Q&A in Edinburgh and once at a student screening. I didn't think it has the same weight as Four Lions nor is it as funny. There were very few laughs at the student screening and I overheard someone asking if Chris Morris "had his finger on the pulse or was just very paranoid". Thats one of the problems, the story seems so absurd that without knowing its based on similar truthful events, it loses its punch when it viewed without this knowledge. Worth watching but dont expect anything as edgy as Four Lions.
It will fall flat with a lot of people, because it's essentially like doing a comedy about the Holocaust based on the notion that certain claims about it turned out not to be true, with the implication that it therefore was not a problem. This will leave people feeling flat, and when they realise what he is trying to downplay, a lot of people will be quite irritated by the whole thing.

aidan harrison I haven’t seen it either but the theme, although it’s portrayed in a satirical way sounds like a recently aired tv drama series called Capture. A British soldier is used to further the war in Afghanistan by the Intelligence Agencies using Image correction. It’s a complex plot but worthy of watching. Create the crime, then choose the “players”, scary stuff.
Chris Morris is my god and I was dissapointed, I cringed through most of the dialogue. Possibly just the american actors not being a good fit for his style of writing?
I love Chris Morris but this slipped into the same "Jazz" comedy that Death Of Stalin did. The comedy is very clever, but not very funny. You just get the feeling that they enjoyed writing the jokes more than we enjoy laughing at them.
I think some of the jokes/slang in this film might go over a mainstream British audience’s head - especially the quick silly patter between the “terrorists”. I was howling at some things while the rest of the auditorium was like 🤷🏼♀️
Wish Chris Morris would do a film focussing on the forgotten white underclass in Britain. There are lots of films highlighting the plight of minorities, but few looking at the absurdities of a large section of white Britain gradually sinking down the educational / income charts to the very bottom - while middle class politicians focus on the needs of BAME because it's a better look for them, an easy virtue-signal.
It's an OK film. But the main thing I got from it was it could have easily been taken from real life, and much of it was inspired by the many hundreds of non-terrorists that have been set up by the FBI. It makes the FBI look good, and that they are keeping America safe, but they then have less time to focus on the real terrorists.
Saw it yesterday and was truly disappointed. Hammy, poorly directed, just a mess. Any satirical commentary was lost on me entirely. Watch Chris Morris talking to Channel 4 news - way more interesting - and not embarrassing like the movie.
IT might sound weird but, you literally just did not understand the film AND it's not supposed to be a comedy. It ends with 4 innocent people each doing 30 years of prison time. it's not supposed to be funny. It's a look into how mentally ill poor people can be turned into 'terrorists' by the FBI and media
This movie is a satire about Hebrew Israelite groups. Their are a lot of Hebrew Israelite groups in America teaching the truth of the bible to so-called African-Americans, some Hispanics and some Indians. This movie, as I wrote, is a satire about those Israelite groups.
Other than Anna the FBI cast was very poor, were unbelievable in dialogue and annoying. The flip side the 'terrorists' were constantly 'with it' enough to make sound rational thoughts all the time which made things like 'horn that summons dinosaurs' etc just seem silly and out of place. Overall it felt the characters were made to fit the situations leaving them as just empty fodder for what ended up being unfunny farce. I know people are saying it isn't funny for the actual victims either, however if you're going to make a comedy out of this to draw light upon it then better make sure it's dam funny otherwise a documentary or serious approach would've been much wiser as the you're using the 'one shot' at exposing what the FBI are doing in a package that ultimately fizzles as at it's core is a poor comedy.
A spokesman for the FBI said "this was the one thing we didn't want to happen".
(I stole this comment) The FBI went on to say about the film that, they: "didn't like it, but they had to go along with it..."
