Late ass reply, but it's a different KIND of view of cowardice. From Zhao's perspective a 'Warrior' must be willing to do whatever it takes to obtain victory, no mercy, no quarter, it's a cowardly act to not crush any opposition you face just because it can't fight back, is a child, etc. Winning is all that matters and not having the 'courage' to do whatever it takes to win makes someone a 'coward' in Zhao's eyes. His attack from behind wasn't the act of a coward in his mind, but the righteous act of showing Zuko his 'weakness' in allowing an enemy to live, or at the very least so badly broken and beaten, that they can't raise arms against you. It's the difference of mentality, Zuko has the mindset of a Ruler, you use no more force than necessary to follow the path you think is right. Zhao has a Conquer's mentality, why leave a village full of children and women who resent you for defeating and killing their men/army, when you can simply not be a 'coward' about killing and doing what is 'necessary' and burn the village to the ground people and all and never have to worry about an uprising. Now don't get me wrong, Zhao IS a Coward, he's petty, small minded and views others only as a tool for his own glory, but in his Mind, he wasn't being a hypocrite, just following his Ideal of 'Courage'.

And they recreated that in the first episode of season 2 when iroh and zuko fought azula and the soldiers on the ship. Azula was about to shoot lightning at zuko, when iroh just stepped in like a boss grabbing her hand and redirecting the lightning, then just threw her overboard into the sea
Jesus Del Angel You just need a keen eye. When I first saw it I thought it was funny that this younger tough man was caught by the foot in the middle of a fire blast by this old pudgy man and just threw him backward like a women flicking off a broken nail. XD Everyone sense of humor is different. Don't worry.
Zuko actually did an Airbending tactic. Iroh throughout the show taught Zuko firebending tactics yes, but they were different movements of all 4 elements. So technically Zuko mastered all 4 elements in his own way by the end of the show.
Much as we hated Zhao, he was the first to give Zuko the cold hard truth that capturing the Avatar wouldn't earn his father's love, he straight up tells him if he actually cared about Zuko he would welcome him home without the Avatar
1:18 If you look closely in this scene, Zuko recalls the time his dad gave him the scar and instead of just sitting there frozen, he decided to fight back
Many fans think that Zuko became likeable after The Storm but I was on his side from this episode onwards as this right here lays out not only his character arc but Iroh's as well: Zuko IS honourable and nobody, not his father or anybody else, can take that away from him. Iroh knows this and tries to show Zuko the truth on their travels and it all comes to fruition in their reunion during Sozin's Comet when Zuko reunites with the man who has been a teacher and father to him all along. Basically, I'm saying this show is a work of genius.
BigBoss Yeah same here. "Zuko Alone" is one of the best they ever did. So good that one of Korra's best episodes followed the same template to great effect and took its name from it: "Korra Alone".
Do you remember when it was explained that Fire Nation doesn't allow its people to dance, because it was determined to be "weak?" Well whenever Zuko does the breakdance move, he always gets the upper hand. :) love that detail
@@domscott1183 His status doesn't really effect his bending abilities though. Besides, Zhao was named admiral, outranking a general, only a few months after this. Considering his age, he couldn't have become much stronger in that time period.
Zuko: *I wonder if he's actually thankful for the tea..* Zuko: "Did you really mean that uncle?" Iroh: "Of course, Ginseng tea is my favorite" Zuko: *wow*
Good thing Zhao didn't challenge Iroh. I couldn't help but notice how easy it was for him to just effortlessly block his firekick and throw him off balance. That would have been a very onesided match.
There's no way Zhao would dare try to challenge the The Dragon of the West, a renowned General of the Hundred Year War. That fight would've been over in one fell swoop.
Xylarxcode not only that but even his promotion to admiral wouldn't help he had ships and strategy and was a clearly poor student of fire bending iroh is THE fire bending master
I love comparing this scene to the final Agni Kai to see Zuko's improvements. Here he is starting off being the aggressive attacker who doesn't exactly know how to defend as that shot of him shoving the general's fire and him kinda hopping backward was shown like thrice. Then he breakdances to simply topple the general down from his basic stance, much like how he breakdances to topple Azula down from her fire-dashing thing.
1:17 is where the tides turn for Zuko. He has a flashback to his dad burning him, you can see it in his face when Zhao is standing over him. Zhao was there smiling when Zuko got burned three years prior and has probably been waiting most of his pathetic adult life to fight Zuko for "shaming" the Fire Nation. He even tried to burn him in the same place his father did. What a utter disgrace!
@@datboy174 It's actually an Airbender technique, I don't know what it's called but back when pop-ups showed they said "Zuko breakdance in 3...2...1!" Either Iroh taught him that technique, or Aang used it against Zuko and he subconsciously used it in that moment
the writers really knew how to redeem a character early on (since Zuko was still an antagonist at this point in the show), with Zuko being honorable despite being in exile, giving him at least one trait to appeal with the audience.
Man, comparing this fight to the final battle between Zuko and Azula is amazing. Zuko has come a long way in a short amount of time. If he were as good as he was when he faced Azula , that fight would have been over in one move.
My favourite bit of choreography in this scene (although it’s all fantastic) is how Iroh uses just his wrist’s movement to push Zhao down once he has his foot grabbed. This whole scene was playing with the idea of balance and poise both literal and emotional. Zuko won not only because he was able to find his balance but also because he was able to push through the fear of being burned again. Meanwhile Zhao couldn’t find his balance again after he lost his position of strength and allowed his emotions to push him into committing an illegal shot to Zuko’s back out of anger. After falling so low it’s no surprise that Iroh was able to subdue him so easily given his physical and spiritual high ground.
The fact that a Fire Navy Commander got folded by a 16 Year Old who only knows the basics of Firebending says a lot about The Fire Nation's training program
Its a small detail, but I love the few seconds between 0:40 and 0:45. Right after Zhao blocks Zuko's shot, we see a glimpse of Zuko's face. He looks terrified. He shakes, and even looks like he's about to cry, right before he lashes out in anger and keeps up the attack. I feel like this small bit detail sort of signifies what we know about Zuko, which is that behind the "angry brooding fire-prince-in-exile" persona is really just a traumatized, scared, and lost young man.
This is when I started liking Zuko the first time I watched the series. It really showed a different side to him than what we'd seen in the first episodes.
I like more the detail that went into his movements for his stances. You see his arm do a little shake before shifting, signifying that there is an awareness and understanding of how muscles act during movement. That sort of attention to detail is MAJOR in animation and TLA nails it perfectly
I honestly love the use of music and cappellas in this show. It really makes everything seem more cultural and genuine even though these are all fictional cultures
Coming back to watch this after a few years I realized that, the remark Iroh made to Zhao burned him way worse than if Zuko actually fire-punched him in the face...
"Remember what happened the last time you faced a fire bending master?" "I will never forget." That line earlier in this episode really helped to cement just how terrifying and powerful Ozai is. And at this point we had no idea who gave Zuko his scar only that we knew that he was just a peon of a threat compared to who else the Fire Nation really had as threats.
@@nelsontejada5303 Nah, dude. That leg sweep/spin-kick seems to be Zuko's signature move. He pulled it off on the Kyoshi Warriors when they knocked him to the ground and when he was brawling Chit Sang at the Boiling Rock.
What you guys are missing is the fact that Zhao actually took irohs words to heart. He didn’t take zukos Hand in the season finale he took the defeat he earned
I always interpreted Zhou not taking Zuko’s hand in the season finale as a matter of pride, and refusal to accept help of any kind from Zuko. That he would rather die than to accept help from Zuko.
I don't think the point was ever to kill him. The winner of an Agni-Kai was whoever burned his opponent first. In a previous scene, Xhao makes a comment about Zuko's scar, and Zuko challenges him to the duel threatening him with a similar one. So yeah.
No it is about the burn, see how zuko just fired a small amount and not a deadly amount next to his face? Yeah that is the same he would use if he was going for it and it is just for burning
***** I heard it was confirmed that he was about to start working on the second one. I can't however specify whether those sources are true. (Hope they're not)
***** It's not that Shyamalan is a bad producer, but he really dropped the ball on that one. Some people say that instead of continuing the Avatar-series, he should try to remake the first movie instead. As for the earthbending scene, I've always found that it would be more effective if they just threw the rock instead of doing a flashmob.
Damn. The animation on this show changed so much between this fight and the Agni kai between zuko and azula in season 3, it's actually insane. Fire in seasons 1 and 2 looks so light and wispy but season 3 fire has so much weight and volume to it. Really makes zuko vs azula that much better
I think it's also with the fact that book 3 zuko and Azula are stronger than this Agni Kai level. Sozin's comet helped, but throughout the season, both their fires grew more solid.
@@alfredohumberto2222 Personally I think it was cowardly when she took aim at Katara during her Agni Kai with Zuko. She couldn't stand losing to her brother which whom she thought was inferior to her.
@@terrelltownsend8016 That lightning bolt in the final Agni Kai makes me so mad. Azula was emotionally unstable, it should have blown up in her face. I really wish they had let Zuko defeat Azula there instead of Kattara.
This fight is simply amazing. The music, the colors, the coreography, the drawings, the animation, the dialogues, the voice actors, the importance in the story and for the carachter of Zuko. It's just amazing, I love it!
@@sheridan6485 I agree, Book 3 Zuko is the strongest version. But I think that Zuko from Book 2 (Zuko alone or in Ba Sing Se) would already be enough to beat Zhao in a few seconds. Even at the end of Book 1 he defeated Zhao at the North Pole quite fast. And Zuko fought against Katara 2x, survived an explosion and the icy waters before that
Zuko asking iroh did he mean it when he said he's more honorable than Zhao Iroh telling him about tea instead made it obvious which is what made it special rather than him confirming the fact
@@X_MAN_98_ huh, i completely missed that. You see, im not smart enough to understand such easy to see things. Thanks for pointing out! Is there any hidden meanings like that in this video?
@@promisnwekenta9703 SO many! This episode is great for that. It really foreshadows that the writers are going to be trying to redeem Zuko. It also shows how good of a teacher Iroh was and has a full pay off to an earlier scene where Iroh is purposely bending infront of Zuko but not hurting him. Because when Zhao is about to burn his face instead of freezing and reacting out of PTSD he was able to get the upper hand and win the fight.
That's because he wasn't on the grind like how he was season 1 constantly training and eating quality food then in season 2 he became a wanted criminal and lost the money to fund his food and training regiment lost all the mass.
Zuko’s father didn’t raise a coward, he didn’t raise him at all, and he himself was the coward. Zuko was not at all a coward, but had as Uncle Iroh implied “unquestionable honor.”
First time I saw Zuko finishing off Zhao as a kid, I thought he actually burned Zhao. That's' show powerful this show is; that it went beyond what kids shows do! This show is life! :D
That is a most inportant thing more you complicate in fight more you get your ass beaten by some one who kips thing s simple just stick to the basics and all else will come natrualy
Zuko choosing to spare Zhao even though he had no reason to Zhao and could've just killed him then and there and Zhao trying to kill Zuko while his back was turned says volumes
I think it's something many firebenders can do. Remember: They bend their inner energy and transform it into fire outside their bodies. It is entirely possible, that they are also able to focus their energy in, let's say... their fingertips, and thus send their enemies flying with the lightest shove.
Hear! will never forget how Zuko 'flicked' that one guy all across the room into a vase with no effort at all or axe kick that table in two in The Beach. I don't think its a coincidence that Zuko seems to show that same super strength Iroh seems to possess. Like Zuko stated once: "You taught me well."
... anyone ever notice every time Zuko busts out the breakdancing move of his like at 1:20, he winds up getting in control... It's like motherfucker went to a dance battle where he was doing The Robot, but when he saw the the other guy was crumping, motherfucker went into b-boy mode.
I know your comment is ages ago, but if you notice, Iroh also uses an earthbender-like stance when he blocks Zhao's kick at the end. Both he and Zhao have studied the other elements and have learned from them. The difference is Zhao uses it for evil and selfish gain and Iroh uses it to help others and save humanity.
I love when Iroh stops zuko, no prince Zuko do not taint your victory. It really was Zukos first victory as his own man defeating a skilled veteran like zhao but also the respect Iroh has for Zuko never failing to address him as prince even though he was banished. Just that small exchange gave Zuko and Iroh massive points as likeable characters early in the season.
my favorite part is that Zuko is asking if Iroh believed his honor was intact and Iroh, acted as if it it wasn't even a question and responded to it like Zuko was asking for tea.
Personally, I think Iroh was *too* perfect. I get that he was a mentor and all that, but I wish he had gotten some character development. Like Tenzin did in Legend of Korra. I'm not saying Iroh wasn't likable, because he was indeed likable. But sometimes I feel he is kind of an insert character.
Iroh was a evil General before the events of ATLA. His son's death changed everything. Not to mention the difficulty of mentoring Zuko. It backfired at him in S3. He was a much better developed than Tenzin. I liked Tenzin but his whole character makes zero sense when you think about ATLA Aang and the grown up one in Korra. They are two totally different character. They made Aang a shitty father just to make Tenzin.. As you said, insert character. I get that growing up things change but Aang was already mature for his age and was an monk. You don't become a shitty father because you get older. He also got over that his Air people diead in ATLA so the obsession in Korra makes no sense. He also did the same shit his Air teacher did to him by putting the whole Avatar burden on him. The fact that Aang does it too on his son is very bad writing.
***** It was never established that Iroh was evil before the events of ATLA. We never knew what kind of person he was other than that he was witty and happy (like he was most of the time in the series). His son's death didn't change his character. He was still basically just an insert character. We never saw any change in his personality. And no, Tenzin was a lot more developed than Iroh. In the beginning, Tenzin was calm, short-tempered and a proud traditionalist. But he started to change when he began training Korra. As the series progressed, Tenzin got softer even to the point that he realized that the reason why his teachings haven't gone that well with Korra was because he himself had a lot to learn. In other words, he became a lot more humble and understanding. Furthermore, Aang was never a shitty father. Were his children badly raised? No. Sure, it may have been wrong of him to favour Tenzin over Kya and Bumi, but he still loved them equally. Also, "He also got over that his Air people died in ATLA so the obsession in Korra makes no sense."? That is not true at all. He may have gotten over his loss but he never stopped loving the Air Nomads (that's why he established the Air Acolytes), so his dream of rebuilding his nation makes perfect sense. And Aang never put any burden on Tenzin.
+A Watery Spirit Iroh developed in prison from a fat man to a muscular man focused on fighting the firenation and became even more sure on helping aang defeating ozai
I dare say this is one of the best animated fight scenes ive ever seen. Long enough to not feel underwhelming yet short enough to feel realistic and plausible, while also adressing character growth i.e. zuko overcoming part of his trauma and pushing forward Edit; A true shame we missed out on this fight in the live action.
Iroh is freaking amazing. Totally burns zhao with the comment no pun (intended), and then is like thanks for the tea is was delicious. Idk whoever came up with iroh character deserves a big thanks, how can u not like him.
Love everything about this fight, a cool battle, seeing Zuko actually kick ass, the slight foreshadowing at how Zuko isn’t yet a brutal as his father and sister, seeing Iroh be a badass as he completely shuts down that attack like a legend, and showing just how much he believes in Zuko
It's a hidden message between them. Zuko knows that he really meant about the honor part, and you can see the slight smile on his face just before the scene ends when Iroh talks about the tea.
He was an admiral in the navy, it’s likely he learned the importance of a solid foundation and steady footing and carried it over to his bending. I am just guessing with that though. He was also obsessed with raw power, it’s possible his style is just incredibly direct with no nuance or flexibility. Jeong Jeong himself said he had no interest in restraint or control, just destruction.
@@vexxama his stance reminds me of an earthbender, like like Iroh implements his style from waterbenders. Azula even said: Earthbender have a spark in them that is so firebender.
Earthbending supposed to be head on attacking and holding ground. since Zhao is so agressive this may look like earthbending, but he's just pussing everything into his attack and pushing back his enamy, not really earthbending style. Iroh however, when he intercepts Zhao's attack, that was earthbending style. Iroh let Zhao go exactly as far as he wanted, and blocked him right where he wanted to, Iroh was litterally standing ground and not moving his position while blocking and pushing back Zhao's attack
He may have since he was in Wan Shi Ton's library. But I don't know if he would intentionally implement other bending styles as Zhao, like a lot of the fire nation is strongly influenced by racism and nationalism
I feel like at 1:17 Zuko was flashing back to the duel with his father. You can see the terror in his eyes and I bet he was in a similar position to when he was back then.

Iroh knows this and tries to show Zuko the truth on their travels and it all comes to fruition in their reunion during Sozin's Comet when Zuko reunites with the man who has been a teacher and father to him all along. Basically, I'm saying this show is a work of genius.
+hyperdeath84 I liked Zuko after this episode and he became my uncontested favorite after 'Zuko Alone'
BigBoss Yeah same here. "Zuko Alone" is one of the best they ever did. So good that one of Korra's best episodes followed the same template to great effect and took its name from it: "Korra Alone".
+hyperdeath84 I heard that was an episode but I never saw it because I already quit Korra by that point lol
BigBoss That's a shame. I felt a bit fatigued by end of LOK book 2, but 3 and 4 won me back big time and made 2 better in context.
It's funny how Season 1 Zuko is totally unrecognizable to Season 3 zuko in terms of maturity and restraint
did you notice that every time Zuko use his breakdance, he win?

True
Ahahah trueXD That worked on Azula too
Breakdance-bending
Do you remember when it was explained that Fire Nation doesn't allow its people to dance, because it was determined to be "weak?" Well whenever Zuko does the breakdance move, he always gets the upper hand. :) love that detail
I have to remind myself that this is season 1 zuko winning against a firenation general.
Gaang and azula might be op but zuko is still a beast. Damn.
You mean Commander. There is a big difference
@@domscott1183 His status doesn't really effect his bending abilities though. Besides, Zhao was named admiral, outranking a general, only a few months after this. Considering his age, he couldn't have become much stronger in that time period.

That fight would've been over in one fell swoop.
that wouldn't be a match at all

Xylarxcode not only that but even his promotion to admiral wouldn't help

I love comparing this scene to the final Agni Kai to see Zuko's improvements. Here he is starting off being the aggressive attacker who doesn't exactly know how to defend as that shot of him shoving the general's fire and him kinda hopping backward was shown like thrice. Then he breakdances to simply topple the general down from his basic stance, much like how he breakdances to topple Azula down from her fire-dashing thing.
he breakdances Loool
He does breakdance.
Wow you're right he did use the exact same tactic on Azula.
Plus the boiling rock prison he breakdanced.
Did someone say dashdancing?
1:17 is where the tides turn for Zuko. He has a flashback to his dad burning him, you can see it in his face when Zhao is standing over him. Zhao was there smiling when Zuko got burned three years prior and has probably been waiting most of his pathetic adult life to fight Zuko for "shaming" the Fire Nation. He even tried to burn him in the same place his father did. What a utter disgrace!
It's even worse when you remember that Zuko was only 13 when Ozai burnt him and he's only 16 in this scene. A kid.
1:17 has to be one of the most epic parts of the whole show. Just that total take down of Zhao was so epic

What was that move called? I've been wanting to find this out for some time
@@datboy174
It's actually an Airbender technique, I don't know what it's called but back when pop-ups showed they said "Zuko breakdance in 3...2...1!" Either Iroh taught him that technique, or Aang used it against Zuko and he subconsciously used it in that moment
the writers really knew how to redeem a character early on (since Zuko was still an antagonist at this point in the show), with Zuko being honorable despite being in exile, giving him at least one trait to appeal with the audience.
Iroh's firebending includes verbal burns and roasts lol.
Man, comparing this fight to the final battle between Zuko and Azula is amazing. Zuko has come a long way in a short amount of time. If he were as good as he was when he faced Azula , that fight would have been over in one move.
Yeah, because he learned from a dragon, instead of his rage.
+KB2 Gaming maybe. But fire lord Ozai was insanely powerful because of rage and his power hungry attitude.
+Xavier Spencer
But iroh is stronger.
+KB2 Gaming really? How do you know, they never said that in the show.
+KB2 Gaming In the show Iroh even said that he didn't know who would win in a fight.

Says alot also about all the other nations. They've been getting their asses stomped by the Fire Nation for 100 years.

He don't look scared or about to cry. Just catching his breath and likely cursing in his head, then pushes forward.

I don't think the point was ever to kill him. The winner of an Agni-Kai was whoever burned his opponent first.

+I. Th. i dont care if he got or not. i agree that others had more but he is a great Charakter anyway
I dare say this is one of the best animated fight scenes ive ever seen. Long enough to not feel underwhelming yet short enough to feel realistic and plausible, while also adressing character growth i.e. zuko overcoming part of his trauma and pushing forward
Edit; A true shame we missed out on this fight in the live action.
musicbe like chukchuckachukc chuck
We got a hamster in the music ._.
Chalk chalk chalk.
LOL yeah but seriously I love the music choice!
hell yes
Lmao
Such an incredible show
Cpt Froza when I see korora fans it’s weird just cause
Cant believe they took this away from the netflix live action.
Chok, Chok, Chok, Chok, Chok! :D
Yumi Sakine

Chocolate chip!
I remember this fight solely because of this music, lol
Water = Taijiquan
Earth = Bajiquan
Fire = Xingyiquan
Air = Baguazhang
earth = hung gar
fire = northern shaolin kungfu
Toph's earth bending is based of Mantis style kung-fu. She was trained by moles instead of the normal earth-benders.
actually you are both right about fire....Way of Nothing is hella wrong about earth because Bajiquan and Baguazhang are the same thing
Crown Champion Yeah, I saw a video called Avatar: Creating the Legend, and figured out the styles. I study Bagua in RL, nothing like Bajiquan.
Mako always did a good job portraying a gentleman like Iroh. He scolded Zhaos insolence but still thanked him for his hospitality
Iroh is freaking amazing. Totally burns zhao with the comment no pun (intended), and then is like thanks for the tea is was delicious. Idk whoever came up with iroh character deserves a big thanks, how can u not like him.
Fire Nation - Japan
Earth Kingdom - China
Water Tribe - Inuit
Air Nomads - Nepal (or something like that)
Yes something like that,Koreans could be the Water tribe/nomads too
Since the water tribe lives in snowy regions I would rather say Inuit or people how live in regions like that and are kinda asian.
I. Th. no
No not Nepal, they are more on the Indian-Hindu side. Air Nomads are definitely more like Bhutan or Tibet. ( region of China).
Slavik Chukhlebov the Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan were known to have dark skin and blue eyes.
Zuko doesn't even fire bend. He just break dances his way to victory.
I like how when Zuko asks if Iroh really meant what he said, Iroh mentions that his comments about the tea.
It's a hidden message between them. Zuko knows that he really meant about the honor part, and you can see the slight smile on his face just before the scene ends when Iroh talks about the tea.
one of my favorite fights in the whole series and we didn’t even get it in live action
This is the moment I fell in love with this show and Zuko
Zhao’s bending reminds me of Earth-bending, he did study in the Earth Kingdom right?
He was an admiral in the navy, it’s likely he learned the importance of a solid foundation and steady footing and carried it over to his bending. I am just guessing with that though.
He was also obsessed with raw power, it’s possible his style is just incredibly direct with no nuance or flexibility. Jeong Jeong himself said he had no interest in restraint or control, just destruction.
@@vexxama I like the in-depth analysis of this show so much
@@vexxama his stance reminds me of an earthbender, like like Iroh implements his style from waterbenders.
In my opinion, THIS is when zuko began his path to redemption he just doesn't realize it yet
I feel like at 1:17 Zuko was flashing back to the duel with his father. You can see the terror in his eyes and I bet he was in a similar position to when he was back then.
I think too, that's why he kicked zhao' s ass just after that, to don't live this "shame" again
