Wish they allowed for a proper 1x mullet dropping the chainring down to 32-36. 40t is waaaay too much for bikepacking. Even the pros have a 20 gear inch granny.
I would like 42 in front and 10-51 behind with 44 mm graveltyres. 40 + 11-42 is what I have and it is covering everything important, but I could be happy with one more gear in both ends. 40- 42 is average 7,5 km/t when going as easy as I can in long (30 minute)8% climbs.

Nice new gear for my next new bike, but my 4 year old bike with a few updates (lower gearing, 25mm internal width rims)...I'm set. Fun to look at the new toys, but nothing I have to rush out and buy.

Other hollowtech II cranks have avaible shorter lengths, so it's not the technology. It's literally like they are trying to kill the 24m spindle or care only about OEM , knowing bike shops will swap on their small frames at the point of purchase.

I switched my Genesis Croix De Fer over to GRX during lock down and have a real mix and match across the different sets Shimano had on offer then. It would be interesting to understand what i would be able to switch out / change to now etc - I have a 2x 600 series chain ring, 46/30, a 105 road cassette 11-34, the 800 series rear derailleur with clutch, 800 series shifters and front disc caliper with XT rotors. My rear caliper is a 105 one to work with the frame mounting.... so a real mix, but it works really well

Interesting that it‘s mechanical only. Shimano has either seen that electronic shifting is not a thing offroad or it comes together with an updated DI.2 XTR.
When I was buying my latest mountain bike (2nd hand), I originally wanted Sram AXS electronic shifting. In the end I found a good value bike equipped with Shimano XTR M9100 and honestly, the groupset is so well made and refined it really doesn't need to be electric. For riding on road, the shifter might feel a little too stiff as you are shifting a lot because of the jumps between the gears, but I can't notice any flaw off-road. I guess with the STI levers this only 'complaint' would be also eliminated. The Hyperglide+ is just that good if you have a high end lever (on the MTB side XT at least, SLX is way too clumsy and the feel is nowhere near as good).
This is a great move from Shimano. Kinda what I was saying about their 1x GRX options from the start: they should try match SRAMs wider range or use more MTB bits (which is why I run my 1x11 GRX with a SRAM 10-42t instead of the original Shimano 11-42t for more range). So, if you currently have 1x11 GRX on your bike, can you just change your RH lever and other 12-speed specific bits (and microspline), or will your levers then not match and you'll have to buy a new LH lever too else it'll look/feel weird? I already have a LH lever for the dropper/brakes. And I presume the old GRX in-line hydraulic sub-brake levers are still compatible? If you can do just a partial groupset upgrade at some point that makes the upgrade price more appealing. 🤓
@@matthewshultz8762 Yeah I presume the fact they describe the new levers as being designed for flared bars, but no previous mention on the 11 speed means I'd have to cough up an extra £250 (or whatever it is) for a new left hand dropper lever I don't really need, just to match a new right.
it's pretty, but i've already been running a sram apex/gx mechanical 12 speed setup for nearly a year now. the hoopes i'd have to jump through to run that vs the benifits are not worth it, and shimano need to get with the times, 175 is out of date, 165mm cranks are i. they need 165 167.5 and 170mm cranks
Curious if these crank arms are compatible with the older version so if you already have a crank arm based power meter it will work with the new version.
Hunt don’t have Microspleen Freehub for Gravel wheels yet. Couple of months leadtime apparently. Also can’t find 175 Crank length anywhere. Plenty of 172.5.
Is there anything that would stop me from putting it on my road bike with a 48 tooth chainring? Would be perfect with the 10-45 cassette and I'd really like to get rid of the front derailleur
For that specific setup, you would need wheels/hub with Microspline freehub support. Your existing road wheels most likely came with a HG freehub. But other than that, you shouldn't have any issues with converting a road bike to a 10-45 1x setup.
I have 11speed GRX 1x on my road bike (with a 11-46 garbaruk cassette and a garbaruk derailleur cage to make the it work with 11-46 (actually even 11-52 would be possible) work), the only problem is that the chainline is a bit wider and the Q-factor is also wider, I switched to a rotor road crankset and now the chainline and Q-factor are back to road standards. It's a nice setup, but if I would build a road bike again now, I'd probably go 2x Di2, sometimes I would like to have a bit smaller gaps between the gears, and the Di2 Shifters just looks so much nicer.
So with GRX going to 12 speed has the pull ratio changed so you could use either the GRX shifters or the Shimano MTB shifters with the new GRX Rear Derailleur ?
Nice ad for Shimano. Will it be on any of my bikes? I seriously doubt it. I've had Ui2 and it had to be carefully watched due to the one battery design.
@@TheCyclingDog I did watch the video. GRX is available in both cabled and wireless. Still, I have SRAM Apex mechanical. Mullet setup and I'm quite pleased I only need one lever. I see no need, now, for two rings on a gravel bike
Can you mix the 10-51 cassette with the double 31/48 chainrings? When you mentioned the double setup, you listed 2 different cassettes, which suggests that they are the only compatible ones? A 2x12 with that range would be insane for someone like me who wants to climb a lot but is quite overweight.
I have serious doubts the derailleur could handle that. Your best option is probably a mountain crankset and the 2x friendly cassette. Or go 1x with a 36t chainring and something like the e*thirteen 9-50 cassette
A 31x51 is 4 mph at 83 rpm. I’d question why you want to go that slow. That’s get off and walk speed. If you wanted to go that slow why would you want a gear bigger than 50x11 to go along with it?
@jonathanzappala people climb Powerline at leadville slower than that which is still faster than walking. If you hop off your bike on a climb, the terrain doesn't become flat😉 Walking a 15min mile pushing your bike up a +20% grade isn't happening.
Pretty much everything. The chainset would probably still be fine but you’d need everything else replacing, including converting your existing wheelset to microspline (if possible)
@@joeldavis5881 forgot about brakes! They’ll definitely be fine along with your left hand lever. It might look a little different but will function perfectly
Depends on what you want to keep and how big you want to go in the back. Other manufactures do HG compatible 12 speed 11-50,51,and 52 that means you could keep your wheels/hubs but loose the 10 tooth*, Left hand lever and (likely) both brake calipers will be fine if you can find just an OEM lever for sale. Chainset should be fine and the cranks look like the same BCD so at worst it would just be a new chainring. IF (and its a big fat IF) Shimano have used the same pull ratio you might be able to use your existing rear mech with a Wolftooth link or an aftermarket cage, might seem unlikely but they do have previous for this, Tiagra 4700 and GRX 400 rear mechs work fine with 11 speed 105 and above shifters (although you wont find it on any official compatibility charts). *If you really want the 10t (or even a 9!) don't forget Srams XD and XDR has been sub 11t for a while and you might be more likely to find an XD/XDR driver for your wheelset, defiantly worth looking into and weighing up the pros/cons before you go buying wheels or having new hubs laced.
I'll stick with my 1 X 8 speed thanks very much. I'll get a lot more wear for my money and the components will be cheap as chips to replace when the time comes (currently on month 16 of daily riding ~ 10 miles)
Interesting. Judging from this, will the following combination work together then? GRX rx610 40t crank SLX m7100 10-45t cassette SLX m7100chain XT m8130 derailleur XT m8130 shifter Looking to build a city bike. Thanks guys!
'Unbeatable, Unstoppable and Undroppable' - How is anyone meant to remember something like that!? Love the new updated components but seriously what is going on there.
i currently have 11 spd grx 2x11 it works fine for where i ride, no need for me to sell a kidney to buy these as yet, offtopic question, we have GCN, GMBN, EMBN what about GGBN? it would be more of what i'm interested in personally
No obvious way to unofficially use an 11-40 cassette which was really popular with 11 speed configuration could be a problem for Shimano here. Shimano cues 2x seems to support 46-30 (and 36-22) doubles with 11-45 cassettes so it would be interesting to see if the existing mtb 12 speed 10-45 cassette would also work on GRX 12 speed 2x (and microspline hub).
I'm glad Shimano started churning out mechanical group sets again as for a while it seems that they abandoned it for their premium lines. I have the Chinese to thank for this as Sensah and L-TWOO have really uped their game.
1200$ for a 1x12. Are they kidding? You can get some decent 1x12 from L-TWOO for around 340$. Yes without cassette, crank and chain. But these parts never add up to almost 900$ even if you would think about taking the supidly high priced parts from SRAM. The 105 mechanical is "reasonably" priced. This is just nuts.
I used to love Shimano, but they have lost their way. If Shimano had made a shifter compatible with the MTB groups, we could have had this years ago. They are so busy trying to segment their market that they are pushing customers away.
😮😢 I'm wondering if the hub needs to be replaced for a 12s cassette? because I understand that if I have a full grx800 set, I have to buy 2 handles because the ones for 12 gears are black not silver on top, rear carriage, cassette, chain and assembling the wheel with a new hub? is it worth it at all? isn't it better to upgrade 11s carriage ad put cassette with 11-50 gears? I thought shimano would give us option of upgrading 800 set not replacing all 🤯 💸💸💸
ok nice but nothing revolutionary, and I feel it would have made more sense to just go with micro spline for all 12 speed (also for road, so shimano should have ditched HG already back when they introduced 12 speed ultegra and dura ace). Why keep the HG body? What does it offer compared to the micro spline? (yes backwards compatibility for old wheelsets, but now if you want to go from 1x GRX to 2x, you need new wheels or at least a new freehub body if available) With micro spline you could still keep 11-xx cassettes but also offer (narrow) 10-xx cassettes and thus make life a bit easier for those who want a shimano road 1x setup (even though shimano doesn't offer a 1x chrankset, it's still something people want)
#ASKGCNTECH Hi guys. Would it be possible to pair the new grx 12 speed levers to the shimano deore 12 speed rear mech since the new grx 1 x 12 is using the deore 12 speed cassette.
Since I've had SRAM AXS (which is compatible with XPLR) since 2020, why should I want this? BTW, my brakes work just fine, despite it being sprayed with some sort of lube and only needing new pads and a good cleaning. Oh, the rotor is heavier grade and has a lot more wear than Shimano. BTW, this is on a gravel bike...
Cuthbert's explanation is as clear as mud... Not because he he didn't explain it well enough, it's just the options within the different 'levels' (sorry) 'Personalities' (whatever overpaid personality came up with that at Shimano needs a personality termination) are so complicated as is the pricing.
Haha, they literally just re-branded the XT cassette and derailleur haha. which means if you REALLY want to weight weenie you can slap on the pricey and notoriously short lived XTR cassette. I do wonder if the derailleur is interchangable with the MTB mechs. Could save some money with a SLX cassette and derailleur out back, not that XT derailleurs are particularly expensive.
This is really gonna need to come down in price to be competetive. If you get levers, crank, cassette, and rear mech for a 1by setup rival xplr is about 50g lighter and over 300€ cheaper. With the extra money could get a red crank instead of the rival, be 300g lighter, and still spend less.
Just got a 2023 Gravel bike with 11 speed GRX 810.. feel totally drained by the constant upgrades ££££ .. will that make me go any faster or improve my riding having 12 speed??? Also is there a weight limit on the wheels due to bikepacking?????
I think 12 speed with that 10 cog behind can increase descending 3% speed from 30 mph to 33 mph, allowing more power pedalling. Less descent it will not help me , because 11-40 is hard enough, more descent it will not help, because then I dont pedal anymore anyway. But I am tempted. It will convert the gravelbike to a combi- gravel-roadbike, putting the roadbike further away in my shed. The roadbike has several flaws. It cant go with fatter tyres than 26 mm, and the big cog on the cassette is only 25 teeth. And it doesnt have any suspension, and no dropperpost. Actually it is worse than gravelbike in sections of almost every journey, when the going gets rough. But it is a true pleasure going between 5% downhill and 5% uphill on good tarmac.
10-51, mmm just like MTB, I find it interesting groadies are using bikes which are essentialy using mtb tech ? Why not just get a mtb, then you can do real off road cyling.
I have a nice XC mtb bought used with slightly wrong stem and hilarious wide bar. Wonder if it would be nice to swop to dropbar and Grx brake/gearhandles? If it works it will be a fantastic gravelbike. I run it with 2.2 inch tyres now which maybe is the best graveltyres possible. Fast on smooth trails, fast on gravel, and fast on tarmac.
@@kayy-03 Thats because you are a lot more fit than me. I have 40 teeth in front and need 1% decline to be able to have a decent cadence for one km on 11 cog and 39 km/t. I am not strong enough to use the 10 cog without more decline or wind from behind or a helping rider that takes the wind.
@@simonstucki I Agree with you, but I tried to add some realistic experience to an answer that I think is mathematical correct, but only is valid for they who are by my standards very strong. It doesnt help to have heavy cogs if you arent strong enough to turn them around. I have this in mind when playing with the idea of changing cogs, and realize that more heavy cogs only helps me when descending light, biking in someones drag, or going with the wind.
For a gravel bike mostly used on the road, I reckon the 10-51T with a 46T chainring looks interesting. By my reckoning, it has the same lowest gear as the current GRX800 2x (48/31T with 11-34T cassette), but a much higher top gear - the same as a road compact setup. I don’t reckon the gaps are much bigger than the 11speed 2x either. You’d obviously have “Ultegra” on your pedals though, rather than GRX…
Not a single word about how it shifts, how it is like to set it up, how does it feel under load. Wtf is this, just a video vetsion of the press release?
Quite expensive for a mechanical groupset. I dont know how shimano will cope with competitors EKAR 13speed for 1200€ or sram rival XLPR for 1000€. Seems shimano is trying to keep up deseperately. I always find shimano good in terms of quality price but defenetly not this time.
Too little, too late! I've considered switching to 12 speed when I saw the GRX 12 speed at Unbound, back in the beginning of June (3 months ago). I've weighted my options and the track record of Shimano launches and went with a SRAM AXS equipped bike a couple of days later. Happy ever since. We've waited 3 months from the first sighting to the announcement. Considering Shimano's record, you could wait another 3 months for any of the components to be available to buy and you may get your 2024 bikes equipped with it in spring 2024. In contrast, when I've decided with SRAM AXS, I had the bike in two weeks time. Shimano always lacked on delivering what's announced!
Apex AXS is only $70 more than the new 610. 820 will probably be close to a mullet, but SRAM is very proud of eagle. Benefit of AXS is you can do what ever the hell you want and mix it up.

@@veganpotterthevegan nobody at Leadville is using a 48x10 gear are they. They are also using hard tails not gravel bikes.
I'm totally fine with 11s.
As a kid it was 5 speed freewheels for years, so I'm still pretty thrilled with 11!
@@festerofest4374 You were lucky - I had 1x1...
So I guess there's just two tiers, 600 and 800, and the 400 tier falls away?
400 was 10 speed so it wouldn't make sense to upgrade it to 12 speed (at least according to shimanos logic)
Idk who needs to hear this, but you can run an 11 speed deore 11-51 cassette with the old grx 🤷♂️
You can mix and match a bunch of random MTB junk out back with a GRX cockpit. You can use the 10-speed derailleurs on an 11-speed rig too.
that rear derailer looks like the CUES. for me it looks kinda cheap than the previous model... 12speed means weaker chain?
So I have the old GRX 1x 11-42t what would I need to change to go to the 12 speed 1x
Pretty much everything. The chainset would probably still be fine but you’d need everything else replacing, including converting your existing wheelset to microspline (if possible)
@@danbradley6962 brakes will be ok I was thinking right side leaver cassette and derailer to change ( and hub ) ?
8speed is a solid group-set! Do you find that you run out of gears though?
@@gcn Probably not with a 3x in the front :)
I have 1×8 on gravel too. 40t and 11-40t 😊
Interesting.
Judging from this, will the following combination work together then?
GRX rx610 40t crank
SLX m7100 10-45t cassette
SLX m7100chain
XT m8130 derailleur
XT m8130 shifter
Looking to build a city bike.
Thanks guys!
Is 12 spd GRX DI2 next?
We'll all have to wait and see 👀
'Unbeatable, Unstoppable and Undroppable' - How is anyone meant to remember something like that!? Love the new updated components but seriously what is going on there.
Nice & Thanks :)
i currently have 11 spd grx 2x11 it works fine for where i ride, no need for me to sell a kidney to buy these as yet, offtopic question, we have GCN, GMBN, EMBN what about GGBN? it would be more of what i'm interested in personally
shimano should update the saint and zee groupsets
Wrong channel 😉 Maybe try GMBN
No obvious way to unofficially use an 11-40 cassette which was really popular with 11 speed configuration could be a problem for Shimano here.
Shimano cues 2x seems to support 46-30 (and 36-22) doubles with 11-45 cassettes so it would be interesting to see if the existing mtb 12 speed 10-45 cassette would also work on GRX 12 speed 2x (and microspline hub).
The 10-45 is the same
46/30 with 45 t cassette would be absolute madness.
No electronics???
shame they dont have the option of a shorter crank
Ltwoo GRT 12 seems to be a strong competitor still and it was there prior so it or some other groupset should be the first gravel one. not this
I'm glad Shimano started churning out mechanical group sets again as for a while it seems that they abandoned it for their premium lines. I have the Chinese to thank for this as Sensah and L-TWOO have really uped their game.
Why can’t they let us use two by with the giant cassette that’d be the ultimate set up
Keep going, it’s nearly a mountain bike! 🤣😝
Wait until they release the GRX flat bar shifter which is of course WAY different from a MTB shifter because it‘s infused with THE SPIRIT OF GRAVEL.

About time, the old 1x range was worst in class.
how do you make that out?
@@MrBusunglueck By comparing the gravel 1x ranges available from groupset manufacturers.
@@AlbaTech
Ah, you meant the gearing range...
I thought you meant range as in "product lineup"
1200$ for a 1x12. Are they kidding? You can get some decent 1x12 from L-TWOO for around 340$. Yes without cassette, crank and chain. But these parts never add up to almost 900$ even if you would think about taking the supidly high priced parts from SRAM.
The 105 mechanical is "reasonably" priced. This is just nuts.
Now I really want to see a new version for the dh saint and zee
I used to love Shimano, but they have lost their way. If Shimano had made a shifter compatible with the MTB groups, we could have had this years ago. They are so busy trying to segment their market that they are pushing customers away.
So long as the cassette is still compatible with, and much cheaper than sram eagle, I’m happy 🤣
How much does 5mm crank length change things?
I dream of owning the personality Unaffordable 😛
1X is the future. Having ridden SRAM Explr 10-44 cassette for 4k miles, it does everything. I expect to see more road bikes going this way.
I thought shimano would give us option of upgrading 800 set not replacing all 🤯 💸💸💸
Magical video.
ok nice but nothing revolutionary, and I feel it would have made more sense to just go with micro spline for all 12 speed (also for road, so shimano should have ditched HG already back when they introduced 12 speed ultegra and dura ace).
Also I would really like some shorter cranks? 170, 172.5, 175, what is this nonsense? How about 155, 165, 175, would make a lot more sense.
#ASKGCNTECH Hi guys. Would it be possible to pair the new grx 12 speed levers to the shimano deore 12 speed rear mech since the new grx 1 x 12 is using the deore 12 speed cassette.
No it's a different pull ratio.
Can you explain further? Then why is the new grx using the deore cassette? Is it the rear mech dictating the pull ratio?
Is shifter compatible (cable pull ratio) with shimano mtb x12 RDs? If not, it is a pure SCAM
Ever since the 10 speed days road and mountain have had different cable pulls, I don't see why it'd be different now.
I hope the prices of 2x11 and 1x11 grx will go down.
😊 Shimano running a 10 tooth kog
Can i use durace 1x 42T crank set for grx cassette 11-42?
Like as Sram Force Etap AXS
Since I've had SRAM AXS (which is compatible with XPLR) since 2020, why should I want this? BTW, my brakes work just fine, despite it being sprayed with some sort of lube and only needing new pads and a good cleaning. Oh, the rotor is heavier grade and has a lot more wear than Shimano. BTW, this is on a gravel bike...
So will any of those wide range cassettes work with Ultagra or DuraAce Di12?
No max for those mechs is probably 32t but wouldn’t get anywhere near a 51t
What shoes are those?
Release dates please 🙏
It's available now, sigma sports have it in stock
Just got a 2023 Gravel bike with 11 speed GRX 810.. feel totally drained by the constant upgrades ££££ .. will that make me go any faster or improve my riding having 12 speed??? Also is there a weight limit on the wheels due to bikepacking?????
grx 810 is great. wheel usualy are good for a system weight of 120KG. enjoy your new bike
Nothing makes me undroppable .
Yet!
My SRAM XX1/force axs mullet setup is the same price. And lighter... 🤔
Mountain bikers to roadies getting into gravel riding and just discovering 1x's; YOU'RE WELCOME! 🤣🤣
Would rather have 11 speed di2 grx for a fraction more 😂
My brain can't process the compatibility matrix
Which speed can you hold on the flat with a gravel 1x bike like this one ?
About 53 kph at 100 RPM with 40mm tires and the larger chainring option
@@kayy-03 Thats because you are a lot more fit than me. I have 40 teeth in front and need 1% decline to be able to have a decent cadence for one km on 11 cog and 39 km/t. I am not strong enough to use the 10 cog without more decline or wind from behind or a helping rider that takes the wind.
@@erlendsteren9466 I think that was a hypothetical answer to a hypothetical question
They couldn’t even master GRX 11sp now they come out with 12
It was great. Past 400km deraileur gets loose. Its useless, warranty case :(
Not a single word about how it shifts, how it is like to set it up, how does it feel under load. Wtf is this, just a video vetsion of the press release?
I want a Di2 version Shimano!
Why, why start using the microspline freehub body… fucking brutal
Shimano keep recycling their 12 speed deore rd😂 it's the same with the shimano cues
Can already order it with delivery next day.
@@FreedomOfSport Indeed. Unusual from Shimano.
Probably still more expensive than an rival/ eagle axs mullet mix lmao.
Apex AXS is only $70 more than the new 610. 820 will probably be close to a mullet, but SRAM is very proud of eagle. Benefit of AXS is you can do what ever the hell you want and mix it up.
