NEW Shimano GRX 12-speed gravel group: details and ride impressions

  • Shimano's latest GRX gravel group jumped to 12 cogs in the back and comes in two different 1x configurations and a 2x build with two cassette options.
I dig into how this compares to SRAM and Campagnolo's gravel options, what I love, what bugs me, and what I'd like to see added into Shimano's mix.

I agree. Having had Campy in the past, currently have SRAM Force on my road bike, and various iterations of Shimano on many different road bikes, mtb's and gravel bikes, Shimano just feels more precise and refined, better engineered, and has generally worked flawlessly over many thousands of miles. Shimano will always be my preference.

That outro is priceless. I don't race and my fitness isn't what it should be, so I'm typically looking for low end. I like the Shimano BB design, preferably non-pressfit and T47. That stated, I've used Shimano cranks with what is otherwise Campag Ekar (9-42t, Checkpoint SL5) and SRAM AXS (10-52t, Checkpoint ALR4) drive trains with good success. The 'glue' ends up being the chain ring, which is Ratio (36t) for the Campy and Wolftooth (40t, 42t) for the SRAM. I like the Garmin power pedals with the Campag and Stages double-sided on the SRAM. I also appreciate that with a little internet research I can find 3rd party parts to mix and match to get what I need. I want this new mechanical Shimano GRX group set for my ALR4. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I was hoping this group would be available soon. I currently ride GRX one by with a Wolf Tooth 38 tooth front ring. Not having a big front ring doesn’t bother me. For the racers they can go with an Ultegra crank. I also prefer mechanical shifting. I don’t think electronic shifting makes a huge difference on the rear. For adventure riding mechanical makes for one less thing that needs charging. It’s also less expensive to replace in the event of a crash. 1 x 12 mechanical is my group of choice.

Agree with the 42t 1x chainring. That will not work in local varied terrains and gradients of various lengths. Spun out 42x11 with 11-36 rear on a rival 1 setup on long descent as the group rode away. Also overgeared on the long canyon climb. So will need 2x the but rear gearing is too high from shimano to buy as is. Will have to modify the shimano gearing a bit to work for me. Or just buy sram rival axs which has what said with all the sram options. But love the new shimano wheels.

I never know what model of GRX is the more premium. Unlike Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105... GRX is just all GRX and if you look at part numbers sometimes it will have a 400, 800 but even on their GRX page they don't say anything about 400,600,800. They just have how many speeds in the rear cassette and whether it is Di2 or not. I was looking at a bike at the shop and both models had GRX, I only could assume that since one bike was more expensive than the other... that GRX was "lighter?" Shimano needs to do a better branding and aesthetic distinction between their GRX tiers, because honestly it's all GRX to me.

I have been totally impressed with the HG+ shifting on XTR. Really psyched to get the 12 speed GRX 10-45 on my gravel bike, with a 44 T ring (I run a Red crank for the power meter, and aftermarket 12 speed HG+ compatible rings are available). One question: is the cable pull for the mechanical group here now the same as with the MTB stuff? If so this would allow the option of using XT or XTR derailleurs... Would be nice to know.

Further research has confirmed that GRX 12 speed mechanical is using a different cable pull ratio from Shimano MTB 12 speed system, so one must use GRX derailleurs with gRX shifters... Oh well...

Yep, as @barrowsworm1226 said, they are not compatible. From Shimano: GRX uses the Shimano road pull ratio and XTR is MTB pull ratio.

    So, how's 1x treating you ?
I have changed recently on the gravel bike, and chose the ring size to maintain lowest gear, and had a slight drop in highest gear (no real issue) but the 2 tooth jumps really bugs me when on fast sections ...
Thinking about mixing and matching with other cassetes to get smaller jumps there.
I don't mind any of the other gear jumps, and as a whole 1x works better for me, as most of the time I use the middle range, so no need to change chainrings on bumpy stuff is definetly a +.

Ben, great review and honest feedback on this release. Question: is that 10-51 cassette just an XT/XTR cassette or something new specific to GRX?
Also, while I appreciate 12 speeds (from Shimano) now being offered to the masses for gravel bikes, I'm sticking with 11spd GRX Di2. It's easily my favorite groupset that I've used. As well as XT is set up on my mountain bike, it's rare that I'll ride that and not wish it was Di2.

Like you said the 2.5mm extra on the Q-factor on gravel groups allows wider tyres, however Shimano thinks anyone riding gravel, at least at the top tier doesn't deserve any cranks shorter than 170mm. Stupid, especially considering studies showing the benefits of shorter cranks, and of course people like my 5' 2" wife are just screwed if they want to keep a whole groupset.

    • @WordupG
      @WordupG 10 місяців тому

Whole groupsets are overrated. Just get the parts that are best for your needs. Like the guys who want higher gearing buying the Ultegra cranks. I wanted better shifting under load from my SRAM drivetrain so I bought Shimano HG+ cassette & chain. No big deal
