Amazing athleticism. I can tell he isn't relaxed in the water. Once you learn to slow down and conserve energy with that specific stroke it isn't that hard. Good work marine.
Yeah, I noticed that. I'm not military but grew up in the water. Even out of shape now, I can spend hours in the water because I'm comfortable and know what isn't pushing my limits and how to move efficiently. Considering how in shape that marine is, a couple sessions spent on technique without thinking about time would probably be enough for him to crush the swimming test.
@@Sybaris_Rex Very nice. Yeah, I love swimming and spend a lot of time working on technique. I almost failed swimming in bootcamp so after that I began swimming religiously. Many people would be surprised at how many poor swimmers join the Navy :)
I was a Navy SAR swimmer and have to say I’m impressed he muscled his way though with that swim with how much drag he had. Once he gets the side stoke more streamlined he would easily make it. Also, he’s a muscular guy, that’s a lot of weight/density in the water. You would be surprised to see how many of the special forces guys are not as muscular, a lot more lean muscle. Also, would be cool if you told the viewers the height and weight each time.
I'll just put this out there, I think a lot of people probably skipped and just assumed the guy was a trash swimmer or something. The real answer is that it's a specific type of swimming stroke called ''combat sidestroke'' or css for short, and from the video, it was definitely said that it was his first time doing it. From looking at some videos on what a combat side stroke looks like. It is definitely not something you just do on your first try without practicing. Give this guy like a week of training and I bet he can shave off 4 mins easily. (edited the name of the stroke because it was wrong of me to just call it a ''combat stroke'', so I changed it to ''combat sidestroke'' but people also call it ''combat swimmer stroke'' or css for short .)
It's called a side stroke and you use scissor kicks ...Check out the Australian crawl which is almost like a free style but uses a scissor kick as well
You wouldn't have three days. You have like minutes to finish it. I perosnally would just suck at it '-'. Becoming military is hard work even if you just ran three miles to me thats brilliant if you would make that in like ten minutes. Not trying to be rude and all
@kpr333 Your feeling would be wrong, 15 year olds are only elementary school students, high school students also have exams, bachelor's students also have exams, masters students also have exams, and PhD students also have exams (:
The swim wasn’t bad at all for being the first time. The first time I did the swim I was at 13:33 and by the time I left for boot camp I was swimming in 7:30. First time I ran I was hitting 14 minutes and by the time I left I was at 9:12 for the 1.5 mile run. Push ups went from 45 to 93, pull ups from 8 to 16 and sit ups from 66 to 108. If you are reading this and are getting ready for a special program, dont give up!! Be consistent and keep working hard and you WILL improve.
@@BK-uy9nj those were the numbers for me, im a rescue swimmer. I know the difference. If you are going for any special operation program, your numbers are expected to be even better, you will also need to condition your body to sustain intense training for prolonged times. Also, if you join the Navy under a special program, your boot camp will NOT be the same as regular people, you will be in 800 division and it’s completely different than regular bootcamp, 800 division has to train wayyyy more than regular divisions. Also, if you join the SO, SWCC or EOD program, you better be training many many months in advance before even committing to going to bootcamp, cause honestly it is not that hard but once you graduate a move on to BUDS, you will find out real quick what does “Get Sandy” means.

SEAL training is as much mental as physical. When I was at amphib school at Coronado, those guys came to morning chow already soaking wet and covered with sand. We just shook our heads and stood aside.
I was in the ARMY for 5 years and I gotta say it's impressive as hell that he was able to knock out that many pushups AFTER swimming sidestroke for 13 minutes. Nobody in the comments (or very few) realize how tough that would be. I did more pushups and sit ups than him on my PT tests but I didn't swim sidestroke for 13 minutes either. Props to him for trying it out anyway.
Damn that run time is elite, teach him the combat sidestroke for the swim and he’d earn a NSW contract for sure with those scores in most districts. I’ve seen guys get their contracts with lower numbers than that. Good job Marine and another good vid Austen.
@@AustenAlexander Hey, Austen, do you have any recommendation for some home exercises for arms? If you need to know my physical profile for more information and more accurate recommendation, I am about 74 kg (148 pounds) heavy and 183cm (6 feet) tall, I can do about 40 pushups without pauses, I can go for about 50 with a 5s pause on 40th one and then I cant go any more and I can do only 5 pullups or so. You can also see my physical look on my UA-cam channel
It's not as hard as they're making it out to be. I didn't even make the weight standards and did this when I joined the Navy to see if I could. His lack of experience with trying some of these shows cuz he's in WAY better shape than I was. His swimming needs alot of work(more than he talks about. His line wasn't straight and his breathing was terrible), but I grew up at the community pool so swimming is much easier for me. His situps are bad. There's a trick to doing them better by locking your thumbs in your shirt collar and pointing your elbows. He's a fvcking beast on that pullup bar tho. I got 11 and that felt like death.
Gotta say when Mattdoesfitness did his "Bodybuilders try the US Navy Seals Fitness Test" they went much lower and slower when doing the pushups and they struggled to get to 50 and they got a lot of trash talk in the comment section for not being able to do more, seems there's a lot of confusion on the standards of these exercises, they should have easily done double should they have done the type of pushups in this video.
I can’t say how much I miss this stuff, going on 5 years retired and man, being a civilian is lackluster to say the least. God bless the troops 🙏🏽 HOORAH!!
@Achilles Nothing to be scared of. Just do what your told. Yeah you'll get wrecked a few times when they get pissed because someone didn't make their bed properly, failed an inspection, or some other nonsense, but nothing to be scared of. Former Marine here. Side stroke is part of the Marine Corps swim qual too so this wasn't the first time he's done it. It's a hard stroke to master but not that hard.
I cannot reiterate enough, muscle CAN be a crutch when doing military physical exams, that extra weight will at times hinder your performance, it’s not about CUT, more so leanness. God bless all the troops 🙏🏽
Yeah there are some crazy strong people out there who don't look it because it's lean muscle. They may not be able to lift crazy amounts but they can do a lot before they become gassed. But weight training is a bit more fun than endurance.
It was nice how it seemed that you took someone who hasn’t completed a Seal physical fitness test before but was still physically fit and yet provided the encouragement throughout. Did he say that he had a pectoral tear injury? Pretty cool that he did so well given that.

I took it back in 2001 in basic training for the PJs. The PST test. They pronounced it "past" test. Wasn't planning on going that route for a career at all, didn't even know what a PJ was, but the Sargent who gave the briefing, around week 3 of our basic training, was so charismatic and motivating that I had to do it. It was only a month and a half after September 11th, on top of that. We had to swim one length of the pool underwater for the first part. For the second part was the swim, at the Lackland pool, we had to swim 20 laps (obviously a different pool length than what we have in the video). They gave us the choice to use either the crawl, side-stroke, or breast stroke though. I used the breast stroke. 40 people dropped out on the swim. I stayed in, made it. Next up was a 1.5 mile timed run. I ran that in 9:14. I was a little stocky, 5'8" around 190, but before going into the AF I was running 5 miles a day on the treadmill, 6 or 7 days a week. Then we did pushups, pullups, and flutter kicks. I don't think we did situps. I can't remember. I did 10 pullups. Pushups I crushed. Flutter kicks last. I was horrible. Would never train abs. Three out of 55 passed the test and I was one of them. I believe I got a 282 total. Pretty sure 278 was needed to pass. Passing the PST test is all well and good but nothing compared to what you actually go through once you enter these special forces divisions. For the flight physical, vision had to be 20/100 or better to be a PJ and mine wasn't. I wasn't that upset lol. Went into my career in computers. Special forces guys are warriors for sure.
I served on active duty in the Marine Corps from 1974 to 1980. I had ground combat MOS of 1371 - Combat Engineer. I made Sergeant (E-5) in 2 1/2 years. In 1978, I was stationed in Japan and my unit sent me to Water Safety Survival Instructor (WSSI) School. 30 grueling days of swimming and drown proofing, at least 3 miles a day of swimming. Plus we still did all of the regular physical training of running, pull ups, sit ups. etc. A WSSI in the Marines is considered a "secondary MOS" and our job was to teach other Marines how to swim and how not to drown. I was 23 and 24 years old and I maxxed the Marine Corps PFT score almost every time. The max is 300 points. Run 3 miles in 18 minutes, 80 sit ups in two minutes and 20 strict pull ups. When I had about 6 to 8 months before my 2nd enlistment was up in 1980, I was visiting the Navy Recruiter and trying to get at least a try out for the Navy SEALs. I was also SCUBA qualified through PADI. The Navy could not give me any guarantees of at least allowing me to take the screening tests for BUDs. Also my Marine Corps MOS did not meet the requirements of the Navy. The Navy did not have a Rating that matched my MOS. So the Recruiter told me that I had to complete an "A" School in the Navy, such as an Electricians Mate, or Boatswain Mate, Carpenters Mate, etc., Then I could apply for the SEAL test after completing the school. I had met several Navy SEALs stationed out of Coronado and I visited the BUDs training center a few times on week ends. One Sunday, me and a close friend who was a Navy Sea Bee visited the BUDs facility and we met the OOD a Navy Ensign who was just about ready to graduate BUDs. he was very cool and showed us around. I wish I could remember his last name, his first name was Mike. He served 4 years in the Marines in Infantry and was a Sergeant. When he got out he earned a 4 year degree in college on the GI Bill and became a Naval Officer . I met him in Feb. 1979. He gave us a tour of the place and then showed us the infamous bell. I never knew about or heard about the bell until he told us about it. I knew that I could pass the physical fitness tests for BUDs. I also knew that the drop out rate was high. And just because a guy is really physically fit does not mean that he would successfully make it through BUDs.
yea swimming is more draining than it feels which is why its such a great exercise. i think you just feel so good being in the water you dont notice how hard your workin 😂
@@kieronbrowne7881 the recovery stroke or combat swimmer's crawl is the most efficient stroke for beginning swimmers who haven't spent years training competitively in other strokes. With a good recovery stroke a sailor can complete 500 yards in around 9 minutes. You are allowed to use other strokes as long as you make the time requirements. My friends who were in dive school with me posted much better times than 9 minutes, for example, with the free style stroke.
@Tai Lopez the combat stroke does make less noise and a lot less commotion in the water when done properly. In the field you'll always have at least a mask, snorkel, and fins, even as a rescue swimmer. Once you're actually in dive school you'll always be swimming with fins and other gear in open water. You'll get a lot of practice with fins in a very short time but for the measurement tests in the pool, in EOD in the late 90's at least, you can use whatever stroke you're best at.

The ocean though where the seals would actually be at during combat mostly on night missions would be pretty damn cold. So it’s ideal training conditions for the water to be cold. The seals don’t do a whole lot of wet work in the Caribbean in that nice warm water lol.
TheStuntdude12 i mean they’re just people when they go to buds, it’s the training that makes them hard, not saying it doesn’t take a special type of person

Considering I do 100 push-ups a day I can’t tell you how much I can relate to him. I give him respect for not stopping for that long
Amazing athleticism.

When I was at boy scouts they would call it "Airplane, Chicken, Solder."

Bootcamps or BUDS training? There’s a massive difference.

Keeping him in that lane actually made him run a tad bit further then what you think. After the first 100m he should have gone In to the inside lane.

I know he’s not in the navy but mother of God was that the most visually horrifying combat side stroke
i was litterally thinking this and cringing ahhaha
Former Marine here. Side stroke is part of the Marine Corps swim qual too so this wasn't the first time he's done it. It's a hard stroke to master but not that hard.
Honestly if he just gets the swim portion down he could easily be a Navy Seal.
b4ssfunk3d good one. Not
b4ssfunk3d “EASILY become a Navy Seal.” There is no such thing.
Respect, I don't think government can ever pay them enough for this. No money can do this. Just dedication
That's what I always hear about over muscular mma fighters. That muscle takes ALOT of energy.
Did anyone breathalyze this Marine to makes sure he’s not utilizing performance enhancement?
Muscle and fat do not help
You're a bot
It was nice how it seemed that you took someone who hasn’t completed a Seal physical fitness test before but was still physically fit and yet provided the encouragement throughout. Did he say that he had a pectoral tear injury? Pretty cool that he did so well given that.

My grandpa was in the Navy. Now I know how hard it was for him and respect him so much more. Love you grandpa!
I did the pushups with him I got 90 I put a shoe that was as high as my fist to be the marker for how low I need to go. I’m training for the coastguard rescue swimmer program
hope you make it!
Well done. Hard program and helluva job. Respect.

did you lock out tho?
Jeez I can barely do 20 😂 hope you make the rescue swimmer team or whatever it is🤞
He has such a great attitude, love it!
wow This guy can easily pass this test. he is very fit and healthy, all he needs is the swimming technique but his endurance is excellent.
SURTO FAK The test is pretty easy overall, actually making it through BUD/s and becoming a US Navy SEAL is a completely different story.
Half the push-ups wouldn't have counted
@Muhammad Revan Oetji I've seen plenty as a Marine.
how many soldiers do you see in the marine corps? lol
@@ProfGlitch Now you're just being picky. Most civilians don't know that Army is Soldiers and Marines are Marines. To a civilian a soldier is just a general classification for anyone in the armed services. Hop off your high horse.
Whatsup guys! How do you think he did? If we can get 10k likes on this video I’m going to have my girlfriend attempt the Navy PRT for UA-cam!

You should do "Navy SEAL takes MARSOC test" that'd be cool or "Army Ranger takes AF PJs test"
[apologetically] "I know the pool's kinda cold right now..." Yup, sure all the SEAL PTIs say that to their newbies..
yea swimming is more draining than it feels which is why its such a great exercise. i think you just feel so good being in the water you dont notice how hard your workin 😂
The marine seems like he'd be a great, friend but could literally rip you in half if you piss him off

Why did he swim like that? Side crawl type of stroke?
Kieron Browne combat side stroke
@@kieronbrowne7881 the recovery stroke or combat swimmer's crawl is the most efficient stroke for beginning swimmers who haven't spent years training competitively in other strokes. With a good recovery stroke a sailor can complete 500 yards in around 9 minutes. You are allowed to use other strokes as long as you make the time requirements. My friends who were in dive school with me posted much better times than 9 minutes, for example, with the free style stroke.
@@zappercat5701 honestly if you do breast-stroke you can easily do the 12 laps in time, well from a competitive swimmer Point of View....
@Tai Lopez the combat stroke does make less noise and a lot less commotion in the water when done properly. In the field you'll always have at least a mask, snorkel, and fins, even as a rescue swimmer. Once you're actually in dive school you'll always be swimming with fins and other gear in open water. You'll get a lot of practice with fins in a very short time but for the measurement tests in the pool, in EOD in the late 90's at least, you can use whatever stroke you're best at.
he definitely swallowed a lot of water lol
It's recommended to do that each day. Not so much with the chlorine, though.
"How did he do on the swimming test?"
"He drank most of the pool."
“Alright here’s what’s going to happen I’m going to give you a quick breather and then I want to race you” 😂💪

Had just learned the swimming technique same day
Was recovering from a torn pectoral
Had to do pretty fundamentally different sit ups
And still beat this dude in a race

“The pool is kinda cold” well you done failed right there.
The ocean though where the seals would actually be at during combat mostly on night missions would be pretty damn cold. So it’s ideal training conditions for the water to be cold. The seals don’t do a whole lot of wet work in the Caribbean in that nice warm water lol.
@@cooliodiablo6117 He's not debating that. He's simply saying a seal candidate wouldn't moan.
TheStuntdude12 i mean they’re just people when they go to buds, it’s the training that makes them hard, not saying it doesn’t take a special type of person

All this training and sweat and tears and heart ache and then gets deployed and walks on explosive and blown to pieces and everything was a waste of time. Riding in hummer and gets rpg fire and blown up or rides over a explosive and die. Walking with ya platoon and get sniped in the face from miles away or air striked and killed that way.
