Totally fun watching all of these Austen. I know I am late to the party but the PFT without prep is hard especially when you are a bigger guy. As officers it was pretty much a given that you had to do max pullups and situps. I always suffered a bit on the run, but honestly didn't train for it as I hated running. I did a ton of pullups and situps though. It was old school in those days as we were still allowed to kip, which we did for the test to save energy, but not workouts. Also situps were hands behind head so not as ergonomically safe. I typically struggled on the runs, my fastest time at OCS at 19:12 (still remember that 35 years later....lol). Normally in the 21 to 22 range, still good enough for upper 270's, lower 280's. Worst PFT ever was around the flight deck of a ship underway. Inside leg was hurting big time and shin splints were terrible. Nice job highlighting what our service members do. They truly are the best of us....
Loved it, I can see you were having little bit hard time, running, I would to. I am happy you made it through. I am still thank you for your service in the Navy
Did my first PFT at Parris Island in 1977 right out of high school. Back than to get a perfect score you had to do 20 pull ups, 80 sit ups in two minutes (not crunches) and run the 3 miles in 18 minutes. Was in 3rd Battalion at Parris Island and we had to run in sand with combat boots. I maxed my pull ups and sit ups and ran my best time ever of 21 minutes and ten seconds. My chest hurt so bad I thought my heart was going to burst. After I graduated boot camp I went to 2nd Combat Engineers 2nd Marine Div at Camp Lejeune 1978-1982. Had a Marine transfer to our unit after he served four years in 2nd Recon Battalion who ran a PFT with my unit. That's when I got to see what a specially trained Marine could do. Not only did he dust us all, he did it with half the effort. Must admit watching this video brought back good memories.

We had a gym type dude in my platoon when I was in 20 years ago and this dude sucked at PT. After running his mouth about how he was going to score the highest PFT score, he ended up scoring the lowest in the entire battalion. He ended up getting put out of the military because he couldn't pass the PFT test. It's a lot harder than people think it is, especially that god damn 3 mile run.

Me and my buddy are just hikers and run around the mountains with packs on, and if I’m camping I’m carrying over 50lbs and can still manage to run down hill for awhile, I’ve hiked 12-18 miles with weight on my back and I’m using military surplus not lightweight gear, I only weigh 120lbs tho, I got videos of my adventures
As a big guy who runs, I can say that the bodyweight is a hinderance if you don’t train for running. My last PFT I ran 22:23 and that was at 265 pounds. It sucks but if you consistently run and continue to push it each week then you can be heavy and still run fairly quickly.
I just wanna say that rescue swimmers are built different. I just left Pensacola for water survival school and I had like 8 future rescue swimmers in my class and they were all jacked and PTing was nothing to them
I only had 1 perfect 300 PFT in my years in, and it was the 3 miles part that killed me, finally passed the finish line at 17:59, ran over to the grass right after and puked, good times!!
I never could get a perfect score. Highest I ever got was 290 something because I refused to train for running. 19:10 was my fastest, 20:30 was my average. And I ALWAYS had to go for tape 😂 even though they knew I wasn't actually overweight. 70 inches, 195lbs technically was a fat body back when I was in even though I spent 2 hours a day 6 days a week in the gym...
It's crazy to think, but for those of you who don't know the standards, Austen would not qualify for a combat MOS in the Marine Corps based off his score. Absolutely killed it though, much respect.
Yeah as a former 0341 I never saw one of my Marines score that low before. His run time was ok but you gotta get max points on pull ups and crunches in my opinion as that’s where I always crushed it at while my run time was always in the 20-22 minute mark.
@@MattGoesSkiing define “gym-bro” I agree that most guys in the gym aren’t actually that in shape and focus on aesthetics, but at the same time you can’t seriously believe for one second that the PFT is the end all be all for fitness in all events. Most of these marines pound for pound really aren’t that strong, let’s see any of these guys bench twice or deadlift 3x their body weight, not saying there aren’t marines who can’t do it but the vast majority are lean and built for endurance whereas a huge chunk of marines who are larger will admit they take some form of growth enhancers that do more for size than actual power. There are PT studs in every walk of life ranging from doctors that do rock climbing in their free time to lawyers that can bench 500 lbs. When I was enlisted some people got the idea that your AFSC or MOS defined you as a person, so you had army infantry talking shit only to get absolutely crushed in the gym by some medical personnel. Respect the individual not the title.
@@4threconmarine I know small guys that are tough as nails and can run for miles and I know big men that are cowards...I also know lean guys who cave under pressure and large guys that can handle their business. Mindset and drive define how good you are at your craft and just because the military wants to claim a monopoly on violence claiming their specific brand of lethality is the best does not mean this assumption is correct. I knew men who served that talked a big game and could run drills for days that caved under pressure or didn’t have the integrity behind closed doors whereas there are silent professionals in all walks of life that could put in their work when push came to shove. @@williamwallice4328 yea i mean especially those who served who would that fitness aint everything. There are many crucial aspects to being a good soldier. If someone fails PFT but does better decision making under pressure etc, ill take the less fit guy. there's many variables to consider.

Great video mate!!! Looking forward to more fitness contents.👍
To be considered First Class PFT you have to do 80 push ups in the time limit, I think 2 minutes, you have to do 25 Pulls ups in about 1 minute or so, 110 crunches in 2 and a half minutes (Or hold a plank pose for 3 minutes and 45 seconds), and also run 3 miles in 18 minutes or less.
This is also done consecutively. Just being able to say you can do those numbers on their own is not enough. You have to do the push ups, then the pull ups, then the crunches, then the 3 mile run **Immediately one after another.**
Can we just take a moment and send a shout out to the Female Marine that was keeping up with the guys pretty good? She was amazing! EDIT; OK y'all I guess I will have to explain why I said a simple thing. Even though women don't like to admit it now days, we are built with strengths in different areas then men. I and my 2 sisters are the only girls in our family with 2 big brothers and all boy cousins. So I definitely know about that. Men are just stronger and built for this type of things. Girls can do it, but we have to work harder to achieve the same level. Like guys can loose weight way easier then girls. It is a fact. And yes she is still a Marine and all that, but Girls have to work harder and have obstacles that guys simply don't. That is why I admire women in the services. They are tough. For her to keep up with the guys like she did, is no small feat, she worked HARD. I thought about it growing up, but I knew I was tough enough, nor have I ever been physically strobg enough to be able to. OK that and the group shower thing, I mean come on it is the 21st century!

Wow, that PFT is different from how I remember it. I could also tell these were not infantry Marines, it is a whole different vibe when we PT. Good job by all these Marines and Austen.
Brings back memories of doing PFT at Camp Lejeune. Ran a 19 minute 3 mile, 100 sit ups, 16 pull ups back when the standards were different. The pull ups and crunches have changed since i got out.
Great job especially for someone with no prep; I just finished boot camp so I can say that the Marine Corps does a great job of prepping recruits for the CFT and PFT throughout boot camp
My fastest 3 mile was 19:10 and these young devils did that shit in 17 freaking minutes like damn. I could do 20 pull-ups, 100 crunches, but could never break that 18 minute mark no matter how hard I tried. I was just not a good runner.
It is easy, all you need to do is not give up. No matter what. As long as you do your best and push past that that is all that matters. You will hate yourself and what your doing while doing it. But afterward you will feel fulfilled and ready to do ten more pushups after it.
I worked in the S3, though i dont remember the pushups being part of the pft per mco, but i will say that it isn’t about strength. It’s about consistency, and following through. We learned techniques, like breathing in when your right foot hits the ground and exhale when your left foot hits the ground. Not back to back though. Breathe in, hold it, breathe out, hold it. It ensure less pain in the left side of our bodies, enabling us to continue running at a consistent speed to pass the 3 mile run. It’s all about consistency.
My fastest 3mile was 15:30 back @ lejuene 10 years ago. I actually missed the Corps record by 2 seconds (15:29). I collapsed in a ditch afterwards and woke up in the base hospital due to URI.

Declined Marine - At 17-18 (150lbs) I was in the 15:50's 3 mile but was a basketball player/runner / non drinker. The secret to faster distance run is 1 month of slow distance running / 1 month of hill running with intervals and 1 month of sprints or speed training. Olympic cats qualify in low 13 min times.
While in the Army my company did 7.8 miles in 54:33. For the run we averaged ~8.6 mph. So our 3 mile average for that run would have been 20:53 to complete. But we did a bit more than two 3 milers without stopping. We were in shape.
One of my buddies from the Marine Corps always said if you’re talking while you’re running, you’re not running hard enough. But then again, he also said if you didn’t throw up after your run, you didn’t run hard enough so take it for what it’s worth.
Dude is right. As someone who used to run 8 miles in an hour or a little over or under, give or take, if you are truly maxing yourself, you can't talk while you're doing it. You just can't. Those who would come with me to the gym would get aggravated because they wanted me to talk to them while I was doing it and I physically could not. To say the least, those people cancelled their gym memberships, never lost the weight or got any more in shape because they wanted to walk and talk.
Gotta understand, my dude is a BIG dude, these are much harder due to his size. Like the pull ups for example? Im a really tiny guy, I can pump out well over 13 pull ups all day, but someone like him is lifting well over double my weight, its def much much harder. Mad respect!
As someone who was a Marine.... "Pull-ups best simulate combat fitness" excuse me lieutenant but what does a pull-up simulate in combat??? Also, don't worry about the sit-ups... Most Marines don't actually get them all, they just have a good counter.
What? Pull-ups simulate having to pull yourself up over a wall and other similar compound movements. And what’s with your comment about the crunches? We didn’t give each other handouts and I was in for 8 years.
@@derek9153 hmmm so in combat we will jump and mount the wall using zero momentum. While I then proceed to pull myself up and then back down 20 times.... Didn't say pull-ups weren't a great compound movement, I just don't think they are indicative to "best simulate combat fitness" as the LT said. Then again this is a pft, so it doesn't try to simulate combat in anyway, and only tests physical readiness...so the fact that he tried to throw in the "combat fitness" part to make his little admin Marines look tough, is cute. As for my crunches comment, you were in a weird corps if everyone actually did all the crunches. I don't think I did a single pft where people didn't skip a few to help their buddy get a max score.
@@SOjuice so would a deadlift be better to do then? Pull-ups still don't simulate any of your examples. But a DL or T-Bar row definitely would. I wish the Corps let us Deadlift like the army does now! That would be awesome and way better than pull-ups to gauge physical fitness levels. Edit: then again, I've been out for years so my pft would be horrible regardless. But I do love pull-ups at the gym.

As a big guy who runs, I can say that the bodyweight is a hinderance if you don’t train for running. My last PFT I ran 22:23 and that was at 265 pounds. It sucks but if you consistently run and continue to push it each week then you can be heavy and still run fairly quickly.
As a fomer rescue swimmer in the Navy, we did a SAR fitness test. It wasn't too complicated. You should check it out.
I just wanna say that rescue swimmers are built different. I just left Pensacola for water survival school and I had like 8 future rescue swimmers in my class and they were all jacked and PTing was nothing to them

I remember the feeling of qualifying on the PFT, as a Corpsman. That run...is at the end so you have lots of time to remember what hurts. Semper Fi!
It's crazy to think, but for those of you who don't know the standards, Austen would not qualify for a combat MOS in the Marine Corps based off his score. Absolutely killed it though, much respect.
That’s because gymbro shit doesn’t translate to the real world and what’s need from a war fighter.
I respect someone’s backbone and their achievements not the title, there are badass doctors and literal psychopaths or cowards that made it through BUDs.
@@williamwallice4328 yea i mean especially those who served who would that fitness aint everything. There are many crucial aspects to being a good soldier. If someone fails PFT but does better decision making under pressure etc, ill take the less fit guy. there's many variables to consider.
This was two years ago, but that was still a good showing by you, Austen. Those Marines were impressive.
Even though I am a merely a simple civilian who is still a rookie in physical activities, this makes me want to go harder on my fitness journey and makes me want to try out some physical fitness test to find out my limits and learn to break them, not enlisted nor any part of any military branch but just wanted to have myself a combat ready body structure.
Some simple workouts you can do to get to this point. It's all about repetition until failure but not overdoing it to build strength.
I leave for rtc in a few days, and your videos (especially the ones with michelle) never fail to inspire! Tysm for all you do
Can we just take a moment and send a shout out to the Female Marine that was keeping up with the guys pretty good?
Yea she really was 👏👏
No such thing as a Female Marine. We're all Marines. We all bleed green.

Just pace the fastest guy and stay behind him no matter what.
21:08 was my 3 mil run 1/2 pull ups crunch 100 it take 11:32 min I’m 16 this year
It is easy, all you need to do is not give up. No matter what. As long as you do your best and push past that that is all that matters.
You will hate yourself and what your doing while doing it. But afterward you will feel fulfilled and ready to do ten more pushups after it.
Y’all just got me motivated to go run!
Man I miss AD sometimes 😂

It may sound crazy but this is some of the stuff I miss about the marines, I wish I could still do that pft and still pass but I would fail miserably if I tried that right now. He's right!😂
Dude is right.

Most Marines don't actually get them all, they just have a good counter.
you never know you might have to pull your fellow devil dog up from falling off of a cliff, helo, ship, barracks, etc
