    I know I'm late to the party, but one thing I learned which helped me a lot, is if you find you have berries or bread spoiling, don't just write it off, because you have enough food, as especially early on it means you are wasting labor, so decrease the size of your berry/grain havest area so as to not waste labor.
    My first playthrough it seemed like an entire zoo was released in and around my camp so I had tons of meat, but I had tons of berries around so I was collecting all if them as well, so I had tons of berries spoiling and hadn't considered the wasted labor. Thankfully the berries bushes were close enough it didn't hurt me that much, but it could. It was hilarious, at the start of the game I literally had 3 mammoth, 2 herd of bison, 2 herds of boars, a large group of donkeys, a large herd of raindeer, a group of mouflon, a goup of goats and one herd of deer and a large group of horses. Then just off to the sides I had 3 packs of hyena, 2 mountain lion packs, a couple cave bear familes, and more heards of the animals that started in my camp. It was insane. If I had enough people, weapons and food dryers I could have had enough meat for my camp to survive for two years, without leaving the camp. 😅
    Also, when collecting tannin, remember you can only get it during the spring, but will use it year round so always collect up a bunch. If my harvest work area isn't bringing in enough I will select individual trees near my camp, to build up my tannin stock.

      Hey John! Thanks for your feedback! I'm not likely to ever play Dawn of Man again, but even with that said maybe some readers of the comments will find your tips helpful. Cheers!

    When you start domesticating animals, I've found that straw for animals is much more of a problem than feeding the people. Generally, I farm majority barley, (and the rest eikhorn, so diseases don't wipe out my crops) and add one haystack per stable. As long as you're producing enough straw to fill the haystacks every year, you should never run out of food for the animals.

    • @Rhadamant

      I did majority barley as well, for the same reason

    [Tips] Efficient aggressive animal hunting.
    1. Adults can out run pretty much anything if you shoot once and sprint (dbl-right-click) immediately. Elderly are slower.
    2. Take cover by entering a house (de-aggros).
    Tell 'puller' to sprint near one ready to hide.
    3. Kill anything safely with only 2 guys taking turns shooting then taking cover in 2 houses a little distance apart. Dbl-right-click to enter quickly.
    4. Hold 'H' while selecting to only select hunters and use sprint to position them. 4-5 at edge of camp will kill anything running by.
    5. Large herbivores have huge amounts of skin and meat.
    6. Bringing animals right to your base rather than chasing them about the map and spending long trips to haul is massively more effective.
    7. You can 'herd' aggressive animals back to your base by attacking once then sprinting into a house.
    8. Consider putting some houses around a lake for hunters to hide in when hunting whatever goes there for a drink.

      1. No animal can outrun 2+ attackers(If they attack at same time. If 1 starts the attack while other is only half way out there. Then yes it may get away). They take it down to fast.
      2. When a person gets knocked down. You can just walk away to de agro an animal. All except mammoth and I think lion.
      Have a 2nd person to attack when other person walks away. Animal will switch attack and that person will finish off the hunt. Mammoth excluded for hp reasons.
      3. Inefficient. 2 people can kill most animals before you get back to camp.
      6. yes but it takes a handful of people and plenty of micro management to do that. Could have already got 2-3 animals where you were and have the people hauling the food and skins back before you brought the animals back before hunting.
      Eliminate the extra steps.
      7. Same as 6.
      8. Keep a small camp. They have to supply those houses back and forth.
      1 game I tried adding a 2nd area across the river.
      1 person carried clothing across to store in the house then came back across the river to camp.
      A few minutes later another person was gathering some sticks and walked all the way across the river. Grabbed the clothing. Came all the way back to drop the sticks in the stick pile.
      They don't make efficient decisions. They make decisions on priority list.
      Needs Food Supplies Crafting
      Then sub catagory.
      Hunt/fish harvest (animals/food) gather (Things laying on ground ie meat skins bones) store.

    I like how you casually called your tribals pawns around 3/4ths of the way through the video. Also, you should start planning where you're going to put your big crop fields. Your hut village is a little too crowded for it.

    It seems as if hunting goes better when you either just use an area to auto-hunt. Or if you do want to manually queue it up, to directly hunt an animal instead of moving your hunters closeby and then queue up the animal. It seems they sneak better and get to the animal within their weapon range easier.
    Moving up to the animal and then hunting generally spooks the animal too soon making you have to run long distances after them. Especially bad with fast moving animals.
    BTW, you can also just select the animal you wish to hunt and then select it to be hunted - instead of first picking the hunters and then tell them to target an animal. But that's up to you - either choose the hunters and then the animal, or choose the animal and let hunters go after it automatically.

    • @Rhadamant
      @Rhadamant  5 років тому +1

      With all of the cave bears around auto-hunting would get the hunters killed, they'd try to 1v1 a cave bear. The reason I've been selecting the hunters and not the animal is that the more hunters I put on a target the faster they die and the less likely they get away. Hunting with auto-hunt zones causes a lot of animals to get away, some hunters to die in 1v1s and when I do finally chase down the animal they're super far from base

    • @benriful
      @benriful 5 років тому

      @@Rhadamant Strange, seems the danger of the animal tends to adjust how many auto-hunters get sent. I've seen up to 5 go for a adult cave bear at once, and then only one going for a juvenile deer.
      Of course, I don't say you have to. Just a suggestion. It might be good to test this with a save to go back to before committing your main game to this style.

    • @LTL_king
      @LTL_king 5 років тому

      I haven't had a problem with letting them hunt on their own.
      If you manually select where to walk and get to close. The animals will run off.
      Sometimes when the work load is low. I'll gather a team and have a few run ahead and around a pack.
      Have them come back for the hunt and chase the animals back towards the camp into other people. Then take out everything in sight.
      However every season I always at select 1-2 animals to hunt and they do a good job taking care of it.
      Having a hunting area zoned. They tend to queue up more hunts than I want or the animals never come into the zone.

    • @LTL_king
      @LTL_king 5 років тому +1

      @@benriful I read that somewhere. The danger of the animal selects how many people for the hunt but early on you want to grab at least 2 up to 4 and tell them to hunt.
      The weapons are junk and your people will get killed by an adult bear lion etc.
      Says in the tips to just go after juveniles at 1st.
      Also people don't go attacking in groups. When they get down with current task they take off 1 at a time.
      When a person gets knocked down by an attacking animal.
      Grab them and tell them to walk away. The animal will stop attacking, except mammoth and maybe lion
      Have another person finish the attack and the animal will start attacking them.

    • @benriful
      @benriful 5 років тому

      @@LTL_king Agreed about early on. Not sure the algorithm is smart enough to figure out how well your weapons work. I do agree you need to min max a bit at the start. But once you've got bows I find it's pretty much over - no more need to bother worrying about animals. Well perhaps when going for mammoths / the odd rhino / aurus - they can be a pain until you're into around the copper age. You start getting raids then also, which is a much bigger problem anyways (edit: sorry I mean once you get to bows the raids start or so it seems, around the neolithic it definitely is common to see raids of 3 or more).
      And BTW that "herding" idea of yours is actually very good indeed. Especially for the start of the game when you still only have spears. What I have seen now and then is as if 3 hunters auto hunt by encircling prey. But that might just be due to pathing and the environment - i.e. accidental.

    Hey Got the game today..
    New sub here.
    Thanks for all the infomation you give, Make it a bit easy to understand. :-)
    Still i have a few problems.
    After a short time in my game, I have only 1 or 2 hunters (i have none that got kill) even so i have a lot of gear for hunters.
    Is there a way to get people to go get a spear to help hunting ?
    Can i change what people have in there inventory ? (So i can get them to use spears ?)
    Any way to get people to use bone spear over wooden spear ?
    If i try selling all the wooden spears, My hunters dont go get the bone spears, They pick up other tools.
    All so, My tanner i can only get to work if i turn skin drying off, Try many numbers, many %, But any numbers or %, Tanner dont work for me.
    Yes i have collect the tanner from the trees.
    Kindly.

      If you queue up a bunch of hunting jobs, your villages will all grab
      appropriate weapons to go hunting once they're not busy with other
      tasks. Directly control that group of hunters and instruct them to just
      take down targets together.
      You can't directly influence what someone has in their inventory, you
      can just task that individual for a job and hope they get the right
      tool. Make sure you have plenty of spears or bows.
      Eventually people's tools will degrade and be destroyed, so if you have
      ample supply of bone spears they'll upgrade. It can take awhile.
      Your hunters grab the best tool for the job that they currently have.
      Ideally you'd want bows, but if not bows, bone spears. Make sure you've
      got some in STORAGE (not in someone's home)
      Your tanner can only tan RAW SKIN and not DRY SKIN. Make sure you're not
      drying out all your leather before the tanner can use it.

      Hey again.
      i found out that sound the alarm (or what it is call) get my people to pick up best weapons.
      So i use that, and take 3-5 for hunting, Turn off alarm and go hunting.
      Find it "easy" then set up a hunting area, As that can some time take a little time.
      Then delete the hunting area again before group them up and hunt.
      My hunter when use hunting area dont come a same time, So for me take to much time to control.

    I didn't think you could. No, I'm sure you can't.
    It's the respawn rate. It is very low. If your hunting everything you see. You could consider them extinct, "from your area."
    I know. I had 20-30 people early game and the animals just weren't around. I was running out of hides for clothes sledges hut repair. I couldn't find any animals close by.
    Trying to chase down that 1 deer, bear, etc for it's hide. Needs fell till they started to die of starvation.
