*I'm prepping for 2024! What should I cover??*

My guess for next week's topic is that at least *one* of the two films will be about The Houses October Built (2014)! (Good choice if that's the case, pretty sure I've mentioned that one myself before). 🎃
As Above, So Below (2014)
Mr. Jones (2013)
Underworld series (2003-2017)
Soulmate (2013)
Spike (2008)
Bernard Rose's Frankenstein (2015)
Dracula 2000
Have you seen Caveat? It's on Shudder currently and I think it's a spooky one you'd enjoy.
Angel Heart , May, office killer
Pontypool is a really interesting, hidden gem of a zombie flick from 2008 that doesn't get a lot of attention or discussion, so it might be a good fit. Also, a closer look at some of the late Stuart Gordon's filmography would be fun. In particular, a double-feature sort of video on Re-Animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986), maybe? Since their productions are almost 1:1 and the films themselves unintentionally work as a compliment to each other. Anyway, I love whatever you're up to no matter what you cover. I'm always happy to see you in my feed.
Good CGI horror movies, or good horror movies that use CGI
I actually got the opportunity to chat with the director recently. He said he kind of regrets making it found footage because that actually made it tougher to film since so much of it had to be done in one take with people decked out in suits and prosthetics that made it difficult to hit their marks on time.
Biomechanical horror just hits different for me. It's the terror of facing unthinking unfeeling machinery and knowing there's nothing you can do to persuade it or distract it or deceive it
Very true.
It’s what made the Cybermen so cool and scary to me as a kid.
a War movie in the Found Footage style is honestly an idea that I'm honestly surprised hasn't been done as much
Honestly?
@@PapaWooody yes
it hasn't been done because it would be comically impractical to lug around a bigass camera and miles of film for any kind of cinematic conflict. Luckily this film has a sci-fi premise so its a little easier to believe.
@@tacticaljunk1608 yeah. That concept might not work for a World War 1 to 2 or even a Vietnam type of film
@@tacticaljunk1608It would be rather easy to justify today given the prevalence of GoPro combat footage on UA-cam today. Though I doubt right now would be a good time to put such a movie into production.
That plague doctor thing with the drills is genuinely a really creepy design
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was inspired by the quadruple amputee that walks on katanas from Tokyo Gore Police.
naziskeeto
Silent Hill looking ass
Mosquito Man is one of the best designed monsters I've ever seen
The Fleshpound
I adore this movie. You can tell it was based on a concept and not a story, but it’s so entertaining that it honestly makes up for it.
Duuude I cant belive someones finally talking about this film, and its Ryan himself!
This film has been the sole inspiration for my own art, which Ive been making for 5 years now
The creator of it, Richard Raaphorst, is such a great guy too. Recently he finally released a visual novel 'Worst Case Scenario' - which started out as a predecessor movie to Frankenstein's Army. Since he was aware of my own work by the time it released, he decided to send me a free hardcovee copy, alongside a sketchbook, signed artwork and a custom sketch of my own 'zombots'. Real great guy and artist
This movie helped to inspire some of the bad guys in resident evil village
Heyo do you have any links to your art? I'd love to check it out! :)
@terreausore2435 Why is it so hard to believe that an internet person does art and had a cool interaction with a cool art person?.. Also really talented artists being furries is pretty common, so idk why that would shock you either lol
I remember watching the trailers for Worst Case Scenario when they came out.
@@terreausore2435 I didn't say I was. He was aware of my work because I had shown him :)
I would love this as a video game. Imagine a horror game based around this.
Super close quarters, you have a long unwieldy bolt action rifle, *might* find your commanders smg, dark corridors, huge stealth aspects to be explored
Oh man that sounds fucking awesome!
I'm with you on that. Outlast Frankenstein when?
I vaguely remember seeing an article about the plagiarism accusation to RE Village and remember thinking the creature designers and programmers had probably never heard of the movie until being accused. I'm kind of not convinced of that being the case after this breakdown 😅🤷♀️
there's no fucking way they didn't see this shit
It may be that it was supose to be an homage
To me its only plagarism if the whole story is copied and pasted. Which Village doesn't copy at all
@@vagamer522....you realize the visual aspect can be plagiarized right. Some of those monsters are legit copy pasted. Other than that, no, that's not how plagiarism works.
@@inthedeadhours Then might as well say everything is plagarism. Which as a results means nothing is left at the creative side
I too found out about this gem after playing RE VIII and hearing all the accusations. This movie lacks so much in its plot and characters, yet manages to be such an entertaining creature feature because of cool design and great practical effects. So happy to see it gaining recognition on a major horror-related channel such as yours.
Yeah, it feel less like a movie and more like a gallery of cool monster designs and pratical effects.
I came across something while researching this film. A Shutterstock image from a Resident Evil 6 promo event. Turns out FA wasn't shown in theaters but was shown at festivals, conventions, and other events. So FA was shown at a RE6 event, AND a few of the stunt men were there IN COSTUME! Coincidence?
if that's true then it's no coincidence lmao
Son of a bitch, Resident Evil 10: Hitlers Bunker
I compulsively look at the concept art for this movie. It's so cool.
Me too!!
Such a great movie, so happy that someone is talking about it!!
Preach
agreed, I haven't seen it in so many years but I most definitely haven't forgotten it either
I remember watching this and thinking it felt like walking through a haunted house attraction at points- an interesting design pops out, but keep moving keep walking gotta make time
So glad RE Village brought some more attention to this crazy film
What they should do is establish that The Blair Witch is an occult film editor and every “found footage” movie is her editing work so she can easily change aspect ratios and resolutions by magic to suit her evil intentions.
That would also make the biggest shared universe in movie history.
Technically speaking the largest shared universe is Saint Elsweres. There’s a whole chart
To this day, one of the scariest nightmares I’ve had was one where I was being chased by the “mosquito” monster in an abandoned prison during the apocalypse and while being in the world of the walking dead, I stumbled upon a mass grave where both Rick and Daryl’s corpses were, I tripped and fell in and the monster killed me, I woke up gasping or almost yelping if I remember right and was a little scared but chilled out after
This is such a fun movie with great practical effects, glad to see someone finally giving it some attention.
The first Outpost is also great btw, probably the closest we will get to an actual wolfenstein movie
I was introduced to this movie a few years ago and it is so much friggin' fun. It was one of those movies kinda like Thirteen Ghosts where even after the movie was over, all I wanted to do was research all the different types of creatures that appear.
Yesssss Frankenstein’s army, always fun to hear about it
So this movie wasn't a fever dream I had 10 years ago?
I remember seeing this in the dvd section in Asda beside all the other smaller independant horror films.
People still say the "fever dream" thing that every second person was saying like 3 years ago? It belongs in a museum!
@@MandleRoss Out of this whole comment section, your comment confuses me the most. That's like saying "People still say 'it gave me goosebumps'?" My dude, it's a thing people actually go through. Fever dreams can be horrifying.
@@MrHawkelement Yup, fair enough. I think I might have been in a bad mood that day. Cheers!
What sucks is that apparently the movie was suppose to have a MUCH bigger budget to be filmed with. The movie went silent for a while and then it just...appeared!
I remember checking out the hand drawn content for the movie a while back and allot of the designs are awesome still. Its not a great movie but personally I thought it was a fun one from the monster design alone.
I love this movie. It's not trying to be anything more than a fun monster film, and succeeds in spades.
We need more movies like this. It feels, to the very core, like it started with someone asking "what if frankenstein never stopped making things?" And i hope some very creative and talented filmmakers get the chance to just run with a concept like that in the future
If you ever feel like a foreign film, I can highly recommend the German sci-fi movie "Cargo" (don't ask me why it has an English title), it's very suspenseful and kinda sad, and the vibes are immaculate.
I wanna make a movie based on a couple weird, creepy ass military stories from an old episode of last podcast where they had veterans share their paranormal, high strangeness, or just unexplainable stories from their time in. A couple of those guys' stories stuck in my head in a way that kinda connected them in my brain, and made me wanna make a singular story out of them.
What is the podcast?
I remember watching this in 2011 when I was 11 and I was both terrified and pumped, such an awesome movie and one of my favorites off all time. Instant classic and honestly very simple and fun
This was such a diamond in the rough, i remember seeing the trailer for it back in like 2013 (thank you HorrorNymphs wherever you are) and immediately seeked it out
Hey, that's how I first saw it, I was like 5 or 6 and after that I ended up watching it at some point on Netflix.
The world needs more fun movies like this. It doesn't try to be anything other than what it is: a gory kick ass creature feature. Pure entertainment. Sad that it's not more well known.
Agreed, Frankenstein's Army is absolutely NUTS.
Sounds like you're looking the House October Built 1 and 2. Both aren't too bad.
I remember watching the trailer with my dad years ago, we were excited and it got us playing cod zombies again, I miss the man and cod will never be the same again.
Great video as always and an awesome ( if not great ) film
I was so excited to see this video from you! I stumbled across this film years back and still think about the monster designs in it from time to time - I absolutely loved the drill monster and my initial watch of the film lead to a rabbit-hole of research about the practical effects used for it!
Real missed opportunity to have it be found footage because another party is watching the memories of a camera headed creature Frankenstein had made
Even when talking about a movie like this, you still manage to see things from angles that I’d never thought of. You’re amazing!
I loved the flick, it was just so bat shit insane from the start, i loved the "experimental soviet color film camera"
Went on a bit of a spree of your channel recently (mostly watching your found footage movie videos) and I remembered this movie, but could not for the life of me remember the name. How ironic you cover it just as I remember the movie. Love your content bro
There should be a feature in word processing programs, where Clippy will pop up and say “Are you sure this needs to be a found footage movie?” Cause this is far from the last movie that’s totally unnecessarily inserted found footage, despite the fact that it actively hurts the movie it’s featured in.
One thing I'd definitely say is that more films should feel able to just use the aesthetic of found footage - grainy old fashioned cameras, first-person viewpoint, etc. - and just never say that that's what it is. Off the top of my head, Skinamarink and The Lighthouse do the former, Enter The Void does the latter, and they're all very successful in what they set out to do.
@@FTZPLTC Fantastic point and one I thought would have worked especially well in Chronicle, a movie that was nearly ruined by adhering to a totally unnecessary found footage element.
@@razieldumas - Ah, I've still not seen that one - I saw The Marked Ones which people told me was kind of a rip-off of it.
Lately I'm a lot more onboard with mockumentaries that incorporate found footage elements. It always just feels more plausible than "here's a ton of raw footage that we're pretending we didn't edit to explain why we don't just cut to the interesting bits". I rewatched Occult recently, I really rate that.
Not Clippy! 😂 But this is a brilliant comment. Just film the shots you want to film. There’s no law stating that you have to use a tired found footage story (because every found footage story is beyond tired at this point) to use found footage style shots. You’d think before filming a full color HD found footage film set in the 1940s they would’ve thought of that.
This movie's a real guilty pleasure of mine; always find myself coming back for a rewatch at some point, it's just such a good popcorn flick for me.
Yes I loved this one! I thought it was going to be shit frankly, but the practical effects and weird monsters were fantastic.
One of my favorite horror movies of all time, I absolutely love the Practical effects and the body horror themes, I wish that there was a sequel, I can't believe that it did not get any recognition at all 😅
You finally made a video about my favorite movie! If you could, a video about something else Luke Newberry's in that I know would be a great talking point; In The Flesh. Funny he was in two zombie features.
Thanks for all you do!
That is one freaky movie. I loved it! The music and the creatures walking around is just macabre.
It’s wild to see someone talk about this movie, I remember watching it while doing a found footage movie binge, couldn’t tell you the plot but this movie definitely stuck with me because of how outrageous the practical effects were
Heck yeah! Saw a chunk of this movie 7 years ago at 3am in a sickness-induced stupor and haven't been able to find out what it was called. Those designs are so creepy, disturbing and awesome. Thank you for doing a video about it!
Im in love with the vision this movie tried to portray. I think the monster design is amazing. Truly an interesting movie
I watched this when it came out and I was surprised the lack of kill gore in the movie but not body gore and stuff.
I was recommended this movie by a friend years ago, then recommended it to my friends, had a blast. Highly reccommend it!
Aside from the inaccuracy in the image quality, the camera briefly seen being taken out of the bag is a Bolex and looks like an H16-RX5 (it has a slot for a 400' mag at the top if you look), which didn't come on the market until 1965, and even if it's not, the first H16 model didn't come out until 1956. Plus, if they're Soviet soldiers, they'd never in a million years be using a Swiss camera. They used American Bell & Howell 35mm Eyemo cameras, or the identical Soviet KS model. Plus, how in the name of buggery are they getting sound? Is someone running around with a bloody great big 1940s reel-to-reel tape recorder.?
I first watched this movie with my grandmother in her old Queenslander house.
She fell asleep in the middle of the movie but, I was absolutely gripped by the world within the Frankensteins Army.
I remember when this came out and it felt like I waited forever for it to be released. Looooved the monster design so much. Really don’t remember the story much but the monster design was amazing.
I cannot lie, those monster designs are actually very triggering for me as unsettling. I find them actually hard to look at and has me recoiling whenever they push themselves into view
The live action drill beak dude really freaked me out the first time around lol
I can't believe you're talking about this movie! When I was majoring in cinema and audio engineering/audio design in university in 2019, I had a class I don't even remember the subject of, but we got assigned a group project with my friends about weird horror movies and our theme was Frankenstein stories, so we had to analyse (and watch of course) Frankenstein's Army as well as Frankenstein girl vs Vampire girl (a Japanese weird horror movie you absolutely should review one day it's incredible and it takes itself so seriously), and I'm pretty sure House of a 1000 corpses and another movie that escapes my memory right now. Ahhh, nostalgia! Thanks for reminding me of this university experience!
Loved this, found it by accident and seen it many times so far. love all the monster designs. RE8 definitely took some inspiration from this movie!
I didn't even get the notification for this!?!? I love this movie, can't wait to hear Ryan's opinion on it!!
What stood out to me in this movie was the sound effects
The next video has got to be The Houses October Built and it's sequel! That's going to be awesome! I saw the first movie while I was actually working at a haunted house attraction, and have loved both movies ever since.
My guess is one of the movies is The House October Built. Never seen it, I just remember it's found footage and haunted house centric.
Good video!
Oooh, the Houses October Built? Always a fave around spooky season!
Oh, I watched this some times after Dyatlov Pass.
And funny you said Resident Evil imitated this, because I remember there was Indonesian found footage that was accused of the same thing.
You would probably love the 2 teaser trailers the director made leading up to this film. I interviewed him years ago, and learned that he built the camera for the teasers from scratch. They're really effective and I wish they'd done the whole film in that style, but I imagine this was as stylized they could make the camera grain without limiting their distribution opportunities.
Gotta be Houses That October Built. Never been more disappointed in a sequel.
I still have PTSD from trying to beat this guy on Village of the Damned difficulty...
Watched this countless times, it's so cheesily good. The best WWII "horror" film imo. Monster designs are top notch.
i remember watching this in the cinema during a festival we have in our town. was wild, but basically its Wolfenstein as a film
There are genuinely unsettling moments in this movie. I enjoyed it
Sounds like you're covering The Houses October Built and its sequel next week.
Houses October Built. First part was good and second part pissed me off
Brilliant as ever!
Methinks the next video is The Houses October Built duology?
Having a quick hint to the video is very fun. Great stuff Mr. Hollinger
I would love to have an art book of the monster designs
I mean, the guy in the movie is surprised to see a video camera with sound. That existed in the 40s, as did ones without sound.
Just put a little bit of text on a black screen at the start saying, "This footage has been restored, upscaled, and colourised using modern technology from the original source. The aspect ratio has been adjusted to fit modern screens." There, immersion restored.
This is one of my favorite movies! I'm so glad to find someone talking about it!
Frankenstein's Army is a guilty pleasure and I know one film we are getting is The Houses October Built
The Houses October Built!! Those movies are so crazy!
This kind of reminds me of 'digging up the marrow" in a weird way. Found footage lots of interesting monsters and a real sense of duplicity from certain characters
These monster designs go incredibly hard
Oh man was so psyched seeing this video pop up. I love the designs in this movie (the mosquito is of course a favourite, plus the pot with legs), i wish it was easier to find on streaming platforms!
Ohh my god I’ve been waiting for some frankensteins army representation it’s great to see you covering it too of all people
This remains one of my favorite found footage films I’ve ever seen
I remember seeing previews for this!
So glad you covered this movie. Not only did I love watching it but I even have an actual DVD copy in my collection. It's pretty obscure, though. As found-footage films go, it's very, very clever (although the gimmick outstays its welcome by the end). Still, a great climax and kinda funny, too. Vrey underrated horror flick. :)
I'm playing wolfenstein II right now, I'm in the perfect mood for this.
I love your channel, Ryan, outstanding material.
I had such high expectations for the film after watching the Trailesr for "Worst Case Scenario", which was the original idea. I was bitterly disappointed.
Soooooo glad you talked about this movie. I’ve been a fan of it for years and go back to it every Halloween. Always loved that amazing designs of the monsters.
CALLED IT!
(PS: I find it funny that Karen Roden, the man who plays Victor Frankenstein, plays another prolific character in Hellboy, where he played Rasputin, and once again helping the Nazis. Good on you man, keep up that questionable role choices.)
you should try the danish movie "Men and chickens." Its also quite insane but oddly hilarious and intriguing
Oh yes. Watched this years ago. Just absolute madness.
I’ve been waiting so long for you to talk about this film I’m so happy
what i love about your videos is that you overthink it
I have watched this movie every October for the past 7-8 years and randomly throughout the years I love it so much the Designs are amazing I remember Call of Duty WW2 coming out and just thinking "Why do these Zombies look like they're from Frankensteins Army?" Such an underrated and fun movie
Saw this years ago on netflix. So happy people are learning about it loll I loved it
First "hoyevver" drops at 4:50. He teases us.
This movie has some of the best creature designs I've ever seen
I actually enjoy Frankenstein’s Army, though I do agree the found footage element doesn’t work. Beyond that it’s a good bit of nasty fun best enjoyed with friends who’ve never seen it after a few drinks.
A horror movie that takes place during World War II is a brilliant idea and I can't believe that there are more horror movies like this 😁
All time favorite!! Thanks for getting word out about it!!
Saw this at a screening and have the DVD, surprised that you didn't draw the connection to Bioshock
I love this movie so much. Guilty pleasure for sure. This and Dead Snow 1 and 2
