@T Finnster also, despite the inherent horror of fascism, the fact that there was a villain gives ww2 a moral clarity. Whereas ww1 was a very nihilistic affair, a result of the machinations of the powerful, nonsensical alliances starting a machine of death where every shell shocked soldier was just a cog. And all that without ideology or rationale beyond mostly made up grudges.

I don't like straight up war movies, but I love it when filmmakers infuse it with other elements, like fantasy (Pan's Labryinth as you mentioned), comedy (Inglorious Basterds/Jojo Rabbit comes to mind), or horror (Overlord, duh!). It gives me a new dimension to see it from while also giving me a semblance of the realism of a war movie that I would normally become uninterested in and turn off in the first ten minutes......Wish we had more films like these.

The uniqueness of the premise (a hybrid of World War two and B-movie horror) alone is reason to celebrate this movie. In a way it reminds me of the 2019 FPS Dusk. Balls to the walls action fest married with actually disturbing and effective lovecraftian horror.

The movie name comes from code name operation overlord? To everyone who might not know is when the allies stormed Normandy beach. There is also one or 2 small town in France during this time period that was literally
Wiped off the map. I assumed the town where they sought refuge was one of them or based on that town? Idk my memory isnt as good as it used to be.

By a sheer coincidence I have just watched this movie today, and several hours later I see your video up. It really nicely tied my experience with Overlord and helped me to clarify opinion on the movie! And honestly - watching Overlord (and Frankenstein's Army a week ago) makes me want to discover more "weird war" types of movies, sci-fi horror tied with real history of war and such.

I'd hoped you would discuss Ravenous! I've been on a zombie/cannibal kick recently and Ravenous, along with AMC's The Terror, will not leave me alone in the connection of the oblique power structures of colonialism and the consumption of human flesh.
War horror is...a complicated subject for me because as someone who grew up in a very anti-war nation with no army, it's almost alien to me how social expectations for other countries praise the modern meat grinder and while ordinary war movies exist, there's always a historical connection and context that just makes it almost impossible to discuss the whys of that level of mass violence. The closest I've seen is The Big Red One? Come and See? Pan's Labyrinth? Pan's Labyrinth in particular tying its protagonist clinging to her disobedience to authority figures with the anarchists desperately subverting fascist worship of order and obedience. Come and See is also rare not only in its sheer brutality but in the horrific confrontation that the monsters absolutely destroying the villages are human and what that means for everyone, including the protagonist himself. And I just think it's a shame that people twist themselves into pretzels about what this time absolutely requires this level of brutality every time a major war rolls around instead of looking first at the social and political structures that incentivize people to jump into the fire, first praising the structure of the military before thinking about what is being fought at all. It's how you think about the fact that dead civilians used to be a thing of horror to people in WWI when nowadays it's just shrugged off and excused because...The Troops. I think very few movies actually address this and. That's just a shame.

Solid overall analysis! I never actually consciously considered it a B-movie when I saw it in the theater, but then to your point, all the better for it!
Maybe it was JJ’s involvement, but I kept expecting more experiments/maybe some other monsters, but for better or worse it was just the evil Captain America serum. I never heard about it being almost related to Cloverfield, but thank goodness that didn’t happen. Not surprised to hear it lost money though, unfortunately - no major actors and not being based on an existing IP is a risky move. But I also could go for a sequel!

I love this film. It was exactly what I wanted when I saw the trailer but I feel like the reason why didn't do so well as that a lot of people wanted I don't know something like dead snow or Call of Duty zombies. Because of that I feel that a lot of people that would have really liked it if they hadn't like known anything about it put a end up not liking it because it didn't meet their expectations.

I think this movie was poorly advertised. The trailers made it look like a straight up gore fest horror flick with the war theme to make it unique, but then it had the names J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot plastered on it. Even though Abrams has plenty of horror in his background, the movie that was advertised just didn't seem like his style especially considering the thing he was most recently known for was Star Wars.
Not being a fan of pointlessly gory movies, I passed on it in the theaters. One day it popped up Hulu though and I decided it was probably better than anything else on the platform that I hadn't seen. Turns out this movie greatly exceeded my expectations, but I can see why it didn't do well at the box office. Honestly I don't know how it could've been better advertised since it's such a unique genre.

My 2 cents: 1) If this “mild spiritual adaptation of Wolfenstein” would have been released as an actual Wolfenstein movie, it would have legitimately been the best movie based on a video game made (thus far). Hell, it probably would have got a sequel . And 2), If Overlord would have been marketed under some kind of grindhouse/b-movie banner, let’s say something like, “Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse presents: Overlord”, the film would have opened to better box office numbers.

    • @natorious314
      @natorious314 4 роки тому +63

The problem with that is that if they had gotten the license to Wolfenstein, they probably would've had a hell of a lot more pressure on them to make something of it, a much higher budget, and lost focus. While it may not have been a box office hit, I think this movie was a perfect storm of circumstances to turn out a solid quality B movie. Attaching it to a pre-existing license would've been a deathblow similar to what Ryan was talking about with Cloverfield.

    • @maximeteppe7627

Wolfenstein in its current incarnation is so tied to the character of Blazkowitz that I think the expandable platoon angle would have ended up wildly off brand. But the comparisons definitely peaked my curiosity so I'll definitely give overlord a watch one of these days.
Incidentally, the machine games wolfensteins are for the most part incredibly well written and thematically rich (or at the very least, much more than they have any right to be), which makes me curious of what a good director like guillermo del toro, quentin tarantino or edgar wright could make of it. Obviously the chances of making a good movie that satisfies the fans and still captures the :larger public is slim, but the new order alone has more than enough material for a great script.

Overlord's probably a far better movie just doing its own story.
Wolfenstein also has continuity and meaningful characters now -- Overlord having anything to do with it would have been bad for the quality of the movie, and bad for future hopes of a movie based on The New Order. It's lose lose.

Once it starts up, I was lured into a false sense of security. I see planes, I realized it's supposed to be D-Day. I think "Oh, that's what the title is, it's Operation *Overlord!*" I'm expecting a not-bad, not-super-special film about soldiers trying to make their way through enemy lines to clear the way for the beach landings.
To have the movie set up with somewhat of a bait-and-switch, where the first 45 minutes to an hour is played straight, with hints of something sinister, you think to yourself: "Oh are they gonna go on about Nazi experiments?" And then, they start ramping it up. Things start jumping into the batshit crazy tier. But! Like you said, there's no irony poisoning. They don't try and break the fourth wall or have characters pretend they're super cool or genre-savvy. They come across living corpses and they find it disgusting. They have to kill their friend three times over and it fucks with them. Sure, there's a few bits that end up a bit funnier than they probably intended, but that's the beauty of a *true* B-movie. It may be campy, corny, hammy, or whatever-else-y, but they own it the whole way through. They know that sometimes *it is silly* but they keep rolling and take the world of the film itself seriously.

We definitely need more movies like Overlord. We need movies to take chances and be weird! You can be intriguing AND exciting, you can be cheesy as well as cool! If you actually care about the project and doing something unique, I can look past a few flaws. Whatever few minor issues a movie like this has will never ruin them for me. I just hate to punish someone for giving us what we've been begging for. We want different and unique but so many complain when they get it.

It's all there, Jed Kurzell's excellent ominous synthy score, strong characters on both sides of the situation (and genders), bizarre Lovecratian/Bosch infused body horror, dark humour, violent propulsive action, flamethrowers, hell even the next generation of Kurt Russell.

This is nearly a whole sub-genre on Amazon Prime with a number of low budget movies (most free to watch with Prime) with nearly the same plot. Watching this was interesting because it was a higher budget film than the others but the plot it had was ripped straight from these other movies. There are Nazi zombie movies, Soviet ones, ones set in France and more modern bunker style ones. They tend to lean more towards camp, with the budgets most of them have it is a goal that is almost requires unlike Overlord, but have similar plots, style, blending of genres and cheesy gore along with the setting of WWII for most. Similar to how Midsommer is a higher budget version of something like Apocalypse Cult, which came out a few years before hand, Overlord is a higher budget version of a whole low budget sub-genre. I think that type of thing is nice, to get better production for a type of movie I enjoy, but I never understood people who thought it was unique.
